Do you have a custom launcher installed on your i9000? I have found (experience) that KIES will not fire if you are not using the stock launcher (TWLAUNCHER). Once I switch from LauncherEX to TWLauncher, KIES will fire and I can use it, the USB Mass Storage, etc....

Thanks for your answer.
I tried this also, but didn't work for me.
BUT the issue was solved. Don't know the exact mechanism, but here's what I did.
As android is a little brother of linux, I told myself why don't you give Ubuntu a trial. So, I downloaded and installed it, then after booting in Ubuntu, I connected the phone, 1st no success but then enabled debug mode and the phone & computer identified each other
Excellent, but no ODIN or KIES for Ubuntu , little depressed, booted into Windows 7 and BINGO, the issue resolved completely.
Maybe the big brother Ubuntu, gave his little bra a push
Try cleaning port on phone
Hi, I went through similar - only ubuntu didn't work either.... I eventually read in a linux forum though about cleaning the usb port on the phone with alcohol. As was at home then and tried on windows again and BOOM! drivers like crazy...
Might try that too. My phone was only 3 months old and never really abused but it worked so what do I know.
Ubuntu or alcohol, I'm happy now that my issue was solved

You don't have to know much about ubuntu, just download it, then install it as any windows program, boot into ubuntu.
After that connect your phone to the computer, and make sure to activate debuging mode on i9000. You may need to disconnect and reconnect the cable before it works.
I also find that my PC will only recognize my phone if I reboot the i9000 right before connecting it.
Quirky, but livable.
Actually this issue is strange, and when I emailed Samsung about this problem, they asked me to install KIES
Yes My phone to only charging when connect cable nothing else happen please any help

i have the same problem and found out that my phone has to be on idle mode... how do i put my phone in idle mode? it says to close all applications and i did but still nothing... and none of the above solutions worked for me.
my phone info is this:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: I9000TUBJH1
Kernel version: 2.6.29 / [email protected] #2
Build number: ECLAIR.UBJI1
And to top it all my phone will not boot into download mode.
Guys,
I am having the same issue. This started when I upgraded my P from Win XP to Win 7. I tried the alcohol thing. I tried Ubuntu which could not recognize the phone, whatever mode (USB debug or not, media, kies or mass storage). Of course, I had tried before that to install the lastest USB drivers. I also tried Kies.
Nothing worked. Any further help ?
THanks
I apologize if thread is already posted.
I tried to flash my i9001 to stock firmware but ODIN won't recognize my device. Actually my widows XP machine won't recognize it either.
Tried with different machine and reinstalled drivers and still nothing.
I have installed CWM recovery mode and phone is rooted.
Any suggestions how to flash it to stock firmware ?
Thanks in advance

Its not only about the machines, its also about the USB cable and USB slot, you need to isolate the problem by way of elimination....get a hold of another original samsung USB Cable to isolate that is not the cause and than examine your Phone USB slot for damage/mislaigned pins ...you can try moving the usb plug to see, if connection is being established

Assuming you did not just buy any compatible cable, much to my regret, I myself have bought and found unusable .
and you have tried the Quick Guide
If phone is not being detected of a sudden (Quick Guide)
1. Reboot PC after a power cord pull and Reboot Phone after a Battery Pull , try USB connection
2. Try using a different Samsung USB cable (must be sumsung and nothing else)
3. Try a different USB port (use USB slots at the back of PC)
4. Try on a lap top or different PC
5. Try install nexus drivers - needed for ICS firmwares
6. Make sure you don't have fast charge on.
Trick : Putting your Phone into download mode and connecting it with USB cable to PC will do it automatically. Meaning drivers will be installed by windows If there are none.
Frankly, these works for me all the time, so I am a bit clueless as to why you are unable to. I mean losing USB connection is pretty common, happens every now and than.
You should also try switching off WIFI , reboot the phone, reboot the PC, start Odin and than plug in the phone ( this worked for some)
Since the USB is trying to connect but not recognized as to what it is, you should try again, this time using device manger as mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27205737&postcount=4571
thats all I can think of
Finaly solved my problem!
Thanks!

I have same problem, but phone does't detects only on PC (or notebook) with Win 8 64bit. I tryed other computer (win 8 64 bit), other cable, installed Sams drivers, Kies - nothing helps. But if i connect phone to PC or notebook with Win7 - it's ok, no problem. That's interesting problem with Win 8. It's was ok about 1-2 weeks ago on both my PC and note, and now i have this trouble on both comps...
Phone firmware is CM 10.1/
But my pc detects my note... the problem is when the phone is on download mode.

Have you closed kies? Are you shure that all kies process are closed?

Well I have just recently purchased a i9000t to use the aboard to fix my other one. Turns out I've fixed my original problem and now i can't connect to pc via usb. Only charges. After playing with settings on the phone the pc eventually detects something but it was only on modem and it was unrecognized and drivers wouldn't install.
Anyway after inspecting the usb port on the phone i can see corrosion right down to the soldering on the board where it looks like cookie crumbs.
So anyone having usb detection problems should inspect the USB port.

It's a driver problem on your pc.... are you using windows 8.1 preview?
i'm using xp on all 3 of my computers. my one x connects fine. i all drivers installed including adb.
it wont connect in bootloader, fastboot or recovery either.
Ok i have looked at the device id and it comes up with this in fastboot USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&4091F22&0&2
Now i have looked in the usb drivers and this id is not there , so it looks like a driver problem
How can i get this driver with the id in, as i have downloaded many drivers but with no luck.

Uninstall HTC sync and drivers. Reconnect phone, and it should automatically re-install sync manager and drivers. If it does not, however, you need to manually install the drivers. Also, make sure your drivers are up to date. Installing the android sdk might not be a bad idea either.
Thanks for the reply. Tried everything even fresh pc setup . Something in my phone is wrong and cannot get any recognition from it . It shows usb fastboot then changes to ac charging . I have checked in usb drivers and that id is not there so it will not let me install manually either.

Maybe a factory reset of your phone would help. I know that's a hassle, but it might reset or reconfigure whatever was lost or corrupted along the way.
Have done that thanks. Flashes different roms also .. can a different firmware be flashed through terminal emulator. Cannot even mount phone storage through usb. It just keeps alternating between unknown device and nothing.

Wow. Here's a hail mary then. Let the battery run out. Download stock RUU. Connect to PC, and see if fastboot usb comes up. If yes, boot into recovery, and flash RUU. Start from scratch.
I did try that to be honest. Is there anything special I need to know about doing that ..do I let the phone charge fully or anything before I try fastboot. Thanks for your help.

No, let the battery drain completely. Then reconnect it. As soon as anything on the phone shows up (normally the charging sign) get into bootloader. Boot to recovery and flash the RUU. Of course, it's all contingent on recovery being able to read usb, which it should (recovery uses different port and drivers than boot or oem).
Thanks I will give that a go. If that doesn't work is there an update.zip or img I can flash through hboot that will return the phone to stock. ?

If that doesn't work, you could try downloading a zip of your stock, renaming it update.zip (or anything.zip, really), and flashing that. But I'm pretty certain that you'd have to use adb to flash that through recovery too. Good luck with it all, and I hope you get back on track!

To test this, plug your usb cable into the wall charger and see if it charges. If it does, it's working. If not, if you have another micro usb cable, try that. If it still doesn't work, then I would contact HTC about what your options might be (new phone, new usb cable, etc.). Good luck.

Connect the phone to your pc. Cycle through all the different boot modes, boot, bootloader, and recovery. Do you hear any sound from the pc indicating it's picking up a device? If so, it's working, it's just not showing up while in android connected to pc, which would indicate an issue with drivers on your pc. If a sound happens during boot to recovery, leave it on recovery and get into adb mode on pc and attempt to flash the RUU. As soon as it's flashed completely, disconnect it from pc, completely uninstall ANYTHING having to do with HTC, android or 3rd party drivers. Then, reconnect the phone to your pc, and see if it auto installs the drivers and shows.
I have tried everything you have suggested . Even fresh install of xp on pc . Then installed htc sync from htc website . Plugged phone in , but still won't recognize phone . Well, I can't think of anything else that would help. I think you should contact HTC and see if they've had other issues similar to yours, or if they can help you, but it sounds like your phone's usb is defective. If your phone came unlocked, you should be able to send it and receive a new one. Other than that, I really have no more suggestions. Best of luck.

I've never really experienced connecting my device to the PC won't work. Sorry.
Just buy an OTG cable and put the ROM in a USB and plug it to the OTG cable so you will be able to install the ROM. If you successfully installed the ROM try connecting your device to the PC again.
