You can use CWM or TWRP. You don't have to use 4EXT. If you use TWRP, I recommend using version 2.2.1.4 because the newer versions have problems with flashing older flash zips.
I used CWM (v. 5.0.2.0) and TWRP (v. 2.2.1.4) on two separate occasions, and they both worked fine for me.
Just download the recovery file (ends with .img) and flash it using:
fastboot flash recovery NAME_OF_RECOVERY_FILE
To get into fastboot mode, turn off the phone (or pull battery) and turn it on while pressing the volume-down button.

I have a nexus 7, but this should be the same.
Install CWM or TWRP ad that guy said, but then copy any rom files onto a flash drive, and then install that rom off of an OTG cable. That should be it.
Good luck.

Can't boot into recovery!

I just rooted my Nexus 1 Froyo per instructions on theUnlockr.com. I installed ADB first, Then proceded to root. I then flashed a recovery rom: recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1-cyan.img. This was successful. I then booted phone into recovery mode. Selected recovery and the first couple times I received a black screen with an exclamation point in the middle of a triangle next to green android. I flashed recovery rom once again and this time it allowed me to enter. I made my backup image and even booted into recovery mode againwiped phone clean and restored image. I thought I was golden! Later I tried to boot into recovery mode again and I received same problem as mentioned above. I tried again no luck. I even flashed recovery rom again and It still dose not work. Why could this be happening? I even went through the steps to root phone again (that went well). But still no recovery mode. I even tried another recovery rom: recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1.img. It did the same thing. Worked one time and then nothing! I need to fix this before I load custom Roms.

I was able to flash recovery via your instructions but phone STILL will not boot into recovery mode. I hold down the volume key and power.....all I get is triangle with droid net to it. Im going to try and Un-root my phone and start from scratch! Thanks for the help!
you are getting the triangle with the droid because the recovery did not flash correctly, try usung rom manager if for nothing else, just to install Amon/clockwork

Did you remove the two scripts like you were told? /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and /system/recovery-from-boot.p

Cool thanks for the advice! I did try Rom Manager and used Amon/Clockwork recovery. After flashing the Recovery Image I booted into recovery from Rom Manger. No problem! BUT.....when I rebooted phone from recovery menu I again went in to Rom Manager and tried to Boot back in to recovery and I got the triangle with the Droid next to it. I pulled battery and started phone again. I flashed Amon/Clockwork recovery again from Rom Mang. and again I was able to successfully boot in to recovery. This pattern goes on and on. It seams that every-time I want to boot into recovery I need to flash Amon/clockwork image. Somewhere phone is not retaining the information. Everything looks to work just fine as long as I Flash before I go into recovery. I'm sure this is not the way it should work. Any ideas?

Khaytsus,
When was I told to remove the two scripts? Where did this come from? Please let me know what they are for and why removing them would help? Also, if I do need to remove these would it be done by using Root File Manager, finding file and selecting delete? Sorry if I sound new to this.....it's because I am! LOL. Thanks for any help you can provide!
Try this.

It's documented in random places, of course the post below also has the same info. I don't know precisely what the two files do, but they apparently try to restore the recovery.
Trust me, it will fix the problem. Remove them, re-flash recovery.

So, I'm not the OP, but I am having trouble deleting the files despite the fact that they are both say "YES" in read and write in properties. I tried to reflash from ROM Manager and I keep getting an error there. Not sure what to do.
BTW, I'm using a Galaxy Nexus. Would love some help as this is all uncharted terrain for me.

If I understand, your problem is that you can't actually flash a custom recovery from ROM Manager ?
Which do you use ?
Are you trying to flash a recovery in recovery mode ?
Please link here files you tried to flash.

I can't flash from ROM Manager. Initially, I didn't want to purchase the download capability. So, first, I used the program tools and flashed from there. I got Clockwork Mod to work, but then when I restarted it and went into "recovery," I got nothing.
Now, I can't flash at all.
The galaxy nexus should have fastboot capabilities, this is the best and safest way to flash your recovery partition
Be sure to use the proper recovery image for your device
If you need help finding it or setting up fastboot let me know

I have only ever found a guide for a temporary flash. I would follow the instructions and then CWM wouldn't stick. =\
So here is the typical steps to follow
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
And that's it, were you using fastboot to just boot it? Were you doing another method? The more details you give the faster and more accurate your help will be

I used instructions from http://androidforums.com/internatio...root-samsung-galaxy-nexus.html#enter-recovery.
The ROM wouldn't "stick" and then the USB wasn't even recognized by the end of everything.
Start by booting into your bootloader and writing down everything word for word on that screen here. Next boot to recovery and write down what you see there. Even better upload pics of each. Again the more detailed you can be the more help you can get

[Q] NOOB needs help! please rooting accident

excuse me for being stupid please....i have rooted my atrix before with ease but something happened tonight with rooting the Vivid...i had everything rooted completely and went to push out the VJRAIDER rom...however something went terribly wrong! the phone seems to be stuck in a boot loop. in the Hboot menu everything ends up being a boot loop, recovery does nothing...factory image does nothing....please someone give me a hand i am just lost...
What steps did you do so far? Have you flashed the kernel already? Maybe try flashing it in fastboot.
can you explain how to do what your saying. i have tried to relock the phone which worked but still stuck in the boot loop...tried to do the factory reset. how can i load the stock image on through the CDM? im decently savvy on this stuff just new to this phone...
Please refer to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836
There you will find what you need.
not sure i am understanding how i can use that information without the ability to get into my OS.....it seems i don't have an OS to boot into? or is it that something didn't finish or setup?
Wow! he have the same exact problem. Please notify me when you find a fix for this! Im trying really hard
i was just able to do the fastboot flash boot boot.img and it went through.....what should i do from this point?

Now if your still have issue with recovery (recovery showing up for half a second then reboots) just reflash recovery from bootloader then you can start the process of flashing the ROM over.
There's an instructions post on how flash the ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21042415&postcount=4
Please read it carefully
its not coming up to recovery AT ALL....and i read that multiple times....i am not understanding it obviously and need an extra hand.

So you pulled the battery and put it back and held the volume down button.
Do you see recovery option there if not as the previous post said flash recovery using fastboot flash.....

CWM Recovery problems.

Hello, I have the V20a firmware on my P880 and have successfully rooted it. However I am trying to flash the ClockWorkMod Recovery as to be able to continue with putting PA on my device. I have however run into a problem.
I unplug my device from my computer to do a rom backup, I click ok then the screen goes black. After a couple of seconds it seems to boot up however I get shown two lines of red text reading something similar to:
[lge security] boot image not recognized
[lge security] 5 seconds until battery off to save battery life.
After waiting 10 seconds my device boots up fine but I try to boot into recovery and I get the same two lines.
Do I even have a recovery any more and do I need to return to ICS? If so, how?
Thank-you in advance.

This question has already been answere read and search please.......by the way did you unlock the bootloader before flashing new recovery? If yes and you are having problem with recovery then you can flash via Rom Manager from playstore....in case if does not work you can go back to ICS using SnXo Revert back to ICS thread from General Thread here in the Forum.

Then I will persume that you have unlocked the bootloader and having problem with bootimage signature you can try to reinstall the recovery image with the help of Rom Manager if it does not work you can go back to ICS or JB using LG Flash Tool. Threads are in General Thread in this Forum.
Have Fun.

Thats why I asked you when you said '' Rooted and trying to install CWM''
You can use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179126
to go back to ICS first post by @SnXo otherwise have a look at Post # 7 From @RuedasLocas.
When you finished with that Root First, Unlock the bootloader, Install CWM via Rom Manager (best option to install Custom Recovery) and you are
all ready to Install Custom Roms.
Good Luck.

Ah okay. I would then flash a custom recovery. You can access the bootloader correct? What method did you use to install the rom? Clean flash or wipe is when you erase all the phone's system files, leaving a blank slate for a new rom to be installed on, and should be done before installing a brand new rom to avoid any issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568662
This is the link to the recovery image I used, it's the latest clockwordmod touch recovery. Very easy to flash as long as you have fast boot setup correctly. Once you have a working recovery you should be able to try a re-flash.

I'm not sure, since you have tried to flash another rom, a factory reset might not solve the issue. Trying shouldn't brick the phone but I can't say for sure, sorry!

Could you send me a link to the rom you flashed? Try downloading a different rom. As you can't boot a ROM your only option may be to use ADB to push a new ROM onto your phone's storage.

It may have been a bad download. There isn't really any reason for it to not work, although it does say on the page it "You need TRWP 2.6.3.3 custom recovery!"
Not to worry, you can flash it in no-time. Ok so just as before, just flash a new recovery (again) and use the latest image from here: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7/
This should allow you to install the rom as the developers intend. It is strange though, i've never encountered a rom where a specific recovery was needed.

What i need to know to root?

Hey everyone. I just recently bough a new Atrix HD since my other phone broke but anyways...
1. i noticed i can access the root of the phone (like / partition) but i cant edit it? so is this sign of root? I tried installing superuser binary and it didn't let me so i guess there is no root.
So
How do i boot into the boot loader?
What is the best method for rooting and instaling SU on my atriix (running 4.1.1)?
How do i flash a recovery and which one is best if i want to get cm11? (on my other phone i needed a completely different recovery to get kitakt)
Do i need to unlock bootloader first then root or vice versa?
So the more details the better i will understand if THANK YOU ahead of time.
sorry for such noob questions
PS yes i did google on how to do this and its a bit choppy. like no step 1 step 2 step 3.

No, its far from choppy. The only root method that works on 4.1.1 is Motochopper, and thats an automated script. So how you can say its choppy is beyond my understanding.
Since you are new to AHD, I highly recommend you reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350721

I just used motochoper and everything runs great.
i get how to flash a rom haha but do i unlock bootloader first then recovery?
Never mind.
Thank you so much this is so much simpler than my HTC (coming from an lg where you just plug and play) so pretty much this is nothing new to me.

Yes. You have to unlock the bootloader to flash anything, including a custom recovery.
Um....okay the fastboot part....
How do i flash CWM after i have unlocked the bootloader which i just did. I just kind of wonder....do i have to dowload the 400+ megabyte .zip for fastboot?! or im getting something wrong.
okay awkward....
i flashed the recovery and it said the recovery (i got cwm from official cm instructions) and it said it installed fine.
The phone boots and stuff...but when i cant do the following
1. Reboot into recovery using volume down and power button
2. Reboot into recovery using fastboot command (it reboots but instead of a recovery it gives me an android with an exclamation point in a red triangle)

You're booting into stock recovery. You have to change install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.bak You should find it in /system/etc I believe
Then reflash the custom recovery

Not sure, personally I'm still on stock 4.1.1. I came from the A4G and the furthest we got was 4.2.2, so yeah, you could say that I'm staying with what I'm comfortable for the moment.
