Aluminum Bumper and GPS - Galaxy Note II Accessories

I bought a cheap wisdom aluminum bumper last week, been using it with no problem with wifi, data and cellular signal. Until I use waze and GPS, it would get a lock on then would loose it, then lock on again and loose it again. Thats until I remove the bumper.
I guess the aluminum somehow affects the GPS.

Yes I have one of these, and I measured also WiFi and it blocks it, at least at 2ghz band, GPS signal also weakens and compás enough to Make it unusable.

Unfortunately my experience was the exact same....signal loss with the bumper on. Could be the placebo effect but I feel as though my battery life has also increased without the bumper on. My assumption is that it could be due to the phone searching for signal more.
Sucks because I really like my bumper case.

Different battery covers?

Hey, Is it possible to buy colored battery covers for the Nexus S?
A red one will look gooood on the back of my black phone
Thanks
I was looking for one a while ago, but I couldn't find one that had a NFC on it. The Near Field Communicator is attached to the back cover, so you will lose that functionality if you don't get a cover that has a NFC on it.

I honestly don't care about the NFC and I don't think I'll ever use it..
Can you tell me what exactly you searched to find it or if you know someone that sells it?
I wants non glossy black
Hate gloss just a fingerprint magnet and gets all sweaty in hand
I'm surprised no alternative covers
I've looked before bit no luck
Got a thin case but still would like cover
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I think the Chinese have been reluctant to make too many due to the loss of NFC if you use a cheap door.
I would buy some spray paint designed for plastic (they sell it at auto part shops. I'd buy the primer too) and sand the cover door and apply a bunch of real thin coats of paint, sanding with real fine sandpaper between each coat, until it was as smooth as I wanted. You could buy flat paint or whatever so it wasn't as glossy too. Though fingerprints wouldn't be as noticeable on a lighter color or one not quite so reflective as black.
Just get one of those Gelaskins or Bodyguardz Carbon Fiber skins <- I just got this and it looks and feels awesome.
is there any Battery cover _without_ NFC?
I haven't seen any for sale aside from the standard black or white ones.
Spray paint and clear coat the stock one.

the standard ones are fine for me, but i want one (or in this case two) without NFC because the radio signal is very poor on the Nexus S. But when you remove the back battery door it has one of the best signals i've ever seen on an smartphone

sure iv'e tested it with NFC off, not big difference to NFC on. Its because the NFC antenna in the Cover is very Big and shields the other frequencys to good.
I'm still searching for an Bat. cover without NFC. Any links or recommendations?

I bought 2 of these from this seller. They arrived quickly and do not contain NFC. I bought them to coat in plastidip (works well in 1-2 coats, 3 destroys it) - source (my six tries).

The problem with those is that they are 2 pieces glued together so after some time they start to seperate, I had the GNex bumper (like in 2nd link) and thats exactly what happened; it was nice while it lasted for the month or so
1 piece with a raised lip and it would be perfect imo

The aluminium bumpers neudof and myself linked shouldn't affect reception at all as they don't hide any of the back cover. It's the ones that hide the back cover are the ones you should worry about. I work in the basement floor in my office and I still have full reception.
I have an aluminium bumper on my s2, it does not effect the signal at all.
I wish they make the bumber out of titanium .

My bumper will come in on Wednesday so i will test it then. I have 3 areas where i get varying reception. So i will be able to test it in places where i get excellent signal, medium signal, and weak signal. I'm hoping it turns out to be fairly accurate portrayal of real world conditions. I will provide speed test results of course as well as comment on performance. Thanks for everyone contributing to this thread.
my aluminium bumper just arrived today.
pros:
- is sleek and beautiful
- it is very light so you'll not notice the extra weight
- i didn't notice signal degradation, is at the same level as without bumper
- very easy to mount
cons:
- the cuts for usb and headphones are kinda small and you have to use original samsung cables or similar otherwise they will not fit
- the edges on he back are a little sharp, not enough to hurt, but they could be a little unconfortable
overall impression, i like it and happy with the purchase

i've got that one. depends on your signal degredation. with a tpu case, my signal strength gets up to around 17asu max, with an average of 13-14asu.
with the bumper in the link you've sent, my signal strength drops to 14asu max, with an average of 8-10asu. so for me, the drop in reception was annoying enough for me to just go back to my heavy duty tpu case.
for me the signal strenght oscillate between 10 to 16 asu, with 1-14 average, with or without bumper, so i can conclude that the signal is more or less the same.
what does looks worse is the gps signal which keeps droping inside the building. i still didn't check it outside the building though

i never had much gps signal indoors so not much of a problem there.
but i did notice the signal strength drop was notable enough to increase battery drain as my device tried to use more power to boost the signal. normally my daily usage is quite consistent, to the point where i only use 20% of my battery after a 9 hour shift. with the aluminium bumper, i end up using 30% of my battery after a 9 hour shift.
im sure for people who get better signal strength, the loss in signal wont be noticeable at all. but for me, it was enough for me to go back to a tpu case.
I had a aluminum bumper and it killed my signal. I was in about a 3 bar 4G area and it would drop the signal down to 3G with 2 bars. My area has always been a solid 3G area. I took it off and on in numerous locations over and over and it was indeed the culprit. Now its sitting around collecting dust.

Anyone used Luphie Case before?

I wanted an aluminum bumper but I figured it would still have wireless problems. I saw this case and was wondering if signal would drop and if it could fit most screen protectors.
Since it says signal pass-through I would assume you'd be ok.
But can I talk to these Chinese case manufacturers about putting stupid text on the cases. I don't need "wireless signal pass-through" or "high quality airframe aluminum" written on the item.

I had one on my Note 4 which looks pretty similar.
They look nice but not very good quality the glass on the back of the case cracked from top to bottom and I didn't even drop it.
It literally must of just tapped something while in my pocket
Also it was impossible to get the spen out
& it impacted phone signal

I probably used 4 or 5 of these on my Note 4 (they were only $7 - $8 on AliExpress) on my Note 4- the back glass on each cracked within a couple weeks of use.
Classy as hell on the plastic Note 4, but not worth the hassle.

Got the wireless charging mod today

So my wireless charging mod came in today and I love it! It works very well with all my charging pads and I love the way it feels on the phone. It makes the phone look and feel "whole". Plus the camera is inset just a little now which I like. Because before when you lay it down the camera was the first thing to touch. So this protects it a bit. I ordered mine straight from Motorola because I noticed some websites had some with slightly thicker dimensions "older models perhaps?" But I got it for $29.99 plus shipping. Not too bad.
are you able to use a case with this mod attached? I have the incipio case and it seems pretty snug with no mods, but i want this mod....

Not sure. The mod is pretty sturdy feeling and the screen shatterproof. I just put a screen protector on for scratches and roll with it. So for me I Don't really see any need to have a case. I never have been one to like cases. That's why I've always liked Motorola because their phones are physically tough.

I also bought this bumper and loved it initially. No more slippery edges around the phone and very cool looking and feel. However, the big issue with this bumper, to me, was the reduction of signal (from 5 bars down to 3 bars). It also affected the 4G Tx/Rx signals too. It did not affect Wifi signal that much though. Now, I switched to Verizon Two-Tones black color rubber bumper and love it too. No more reduction of phone signals, protects the edges of the phone and wireless charging mod works perfect too.

Yes, there is a "tab" in the bottom center of bumper. It does not block the bottom edge of mod, but rather it is very close to bottom edge of mod. This makes the mod to come out/going in a bit difficult.

Which mod are you guys referring to? The Tumi or Incipio?

don't use any case with

Any sort of metal on ends.. Or chrome plastic.. It seems to mess with connection.. I had one for months and noticed a slower connection.. And i bought my girl a s9 plus and got her a gold chrome plastic case.. And her connection was supper slow... Once on then she took it off and connection went back to normal
And today i took mine off and presto made a big difference
I use aluminum bumpers, zinc alloy and cristal, silicon-aluminum, policarbonate plated, etc, all sorts of cases, amd never have suffered signal loss, in your case, well I something else may be happening
Metalic bumpers or cases with metalic paint act as faraday cages, which prevent radio or cell signals from being transmitted
Nothing else.. It happened also on s9 plus... Once the case removed the signal went back to normal... Maybe Chinese brands

Interesting.... I guess it depends on how thick or if there are any thick rubber spacers in place between your device and the case/bumper

I don't think the faraday cages need to be grounded in order to block all cell signals. You just have to cover all the antenna lines with metal in order to block the signals.
Well, the really important fact in all I posted here is, That I have never suffered signal degradation when using aluminium bumpers or cases made with zinc alloys, with many different devices, as they do not enclose the WHOLE device, a faraday cage, as it name says, encages entirely what you want to isolate
The case kn both a s9 plus and my note 8 only had the bumpers gold chrome plated...
I just wanted people to know what I went thru
