[Q] I9000 Screen Shattered - Need Data Recovered - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. I have searched the forums with no luck. I have a I9000 that has a shattered screen and as a result there is no image on the screen nor will touch work at all....I know, big surprise right? My goal is to get the data off of the phone. The phone is booting as I can hear the sounds and responds to Doanload/Recovery Mode commands etc. Before I would plug it into PC via USB and I would have to select one of three options on how the USB should behave. One of those options would enable Kies to access the phone. Because the screen is damaged, how can I force the phone to connect with Kies, or the computer for that matter?
All help is greatly appreciated.
Chris

hi, it will depend on what the usb is set to, if you switch the phone on and connect to the PC you should be able to use it as an external disk. If not start Kies then connect and it should connect, then you can recover your files

Hi thanks for the reply. Kies actually doesn't recognize the phone and suggests that I turn on Developer Mode (if I remember correctly).
I read of a way to recover the data by activating the Recovery Mode and plugging in to USB. The issue there is I would almost need screenshots of the menus to try and navigate through and mount the device since the screen is unusable.

Strange experience, you can also try some of these options:
(i) Can use the TV out cable so that the screen is displayed on an external display [Use the 3.5mm TV out cable, even Nokia TV out cable works]
(ii) For using recovery, you should know the cwm/kernal that was installed, as the menu options vary? if not, what last ROM version you had installed, this may also help you get the exact recovery menu options.

I will try that with a 3.5mm to RCA that I have from a digital camera and see if that works. I have never rooted the phone so it's stock and whatever the latest Android version for that phone is. I THINK its 2.3.1 but not sure.

[Q] AP/CP USB Switching? - This one goes to the developers

Hey there,...
i got a bad problem with my OB. When i plug in the usb cable the droid does not offer to mount the microsd for the pc. under "phone info -> status" the batterie status also says that it is discharging - thats not true batterie is charging.
i cant connect with adb to my phone but usb debugging is enable. on the original rom i was able to active "AP USB" in the AP CP USB Switching menu in the hidden menu (3845#*970#). After that i were able to mount microsd for pc again and connect with adb etc.
i already reflashed phone with:
v10a
v10c
Nova 5
Nova 7
Nova 8
Problem still not solved. When the USB Cable is plugged in and i reboot my phone it instantly goes to the "S/W Upgrade" Mode WITHOUT holding the volume key. Looks like a flag. this is freaky... could someone explain me what AP/CP USB Switching really does?

Defective cable?
Hey,
thanks for reply.
Already did the following things:
- Tested Cable with other phone = no problem
- Changed cable = issue still alive
- Changed PC = issue still alive
Must be something wrong with my phone. I dont think that it is a physical defect because when i switch the ap thing everything works fine?

Damn... Wrong thread...
excuse
Hm,
i think there is no real solution.
Last question:
is it possible to port the lg hidden menu into nova? i really love nova rom and with the hidden menu i could use the AP USB workaround to mount the microsd for my pc.
maybe there is no need for the hidden menu if i could do the same via the terminal...
some ideas? alternatives?
ty for help
PS.: OMG... Hidden Menu is already implemented...
Do you solve this isuue...?
did anybody solve this?
I flashed a lot around today and found this issue with Zeus Rom 6.2*, Marvel 9, Supressed Rom and with rooted v20o (root achieved with smart flash tool).
When I do an emergency recovery and play around with this settings battery starts to load again and after some time micro sd USB drive is also offered. I think that the problem comes from the patched v20o...
Imo this is hardware problem. If you didnt mess around with the hodden menu prior to the problem you phone is failing. So take it to service center.
Btw i remember at least 2 people having their p970 in service center because of failed socket.
Faulty hardware was my first thought. Since I am still on warranty I did an emergency reco to get back to factory defaults to send the device back. After doing this and running on stock V20o without root everything is working as desired - battery recognizes the charger, and when connected via USB I am offered USB mass storage
As soon as I put another ROM in place battery loading and USB storage are a pitty and I have to tweak each time for this to function...
Today I also tested with Zeus V20n branch. Same thing here.
Same story with ac and usb?

Make sure the cable is properly connected. Check for dust that might prevent it going in properly. Try a different cable. What OS are you using? I found where bootloader is dmg or incomplete Windows fails to detect it. Linux on the other hand detects it. Can't use it but you can detect it.
Can you connect to SW Update Mode? Battery out and plug into PC while holding vol up button.
If nothing works try taking it into the shop.

You can root your phone from there. If you have SW Update. I recommend taking it into the shop if you are still under warranty, If you don't have warranty then you can go ahead and root. Just install a patched bin and fls with Smart Flash Tool. It's one of the stickies (How to unbrick, I think)
hi
new to Android nation
I have the same issue when connecting to USB...
And I managed to flash with custom firmware (latest ZEUS version) and I rooted but the issue with USB connection is still there...
Anyway, I wiil try connecting it to Linux to check if that would work with USB connecting
UPDATE:
OK after some digging, I managed to (at least temporally) solve the issue... After fresh installing official 2.3.4 firmware I booted to recovery and from there formatted the system folder and then installed Zeus v7 firmware... anyway, USB connection and charging indicator work fine at first booting to system... As soon as I reboot the OS USB connection (and charging) get unstable, and after third reboot it completely goes away and the device does not recognize anything: if I connect USB cable it does not show any sing (charging indicator does not show battery charging, nor the device offers me to connect in mass storage, windows recognizes only modem but not the USB storage) and when I connect charger, battery indicator does not flash as charging... Battery monitor tool shows that "battery is discharging" even though the battery capacity seems to increase (according to growing percentage of battery capacity)... Is there a some kind of USB server... I am a total noob to Androiid OS (used to be Symibian from its beggining )so I hope you won`t mind if I used wrong terms in my explanation/comment...
I hope my explanation is not confusing
Cheers
UPDATE 2:
After installing Zeus v7.01 update, battery charging recognition got fixed using both USB cable and wall charger...
Anyway, USB recognition by PC problem still exists... But when in recovery mode I can successfully mount SD card to PC in Mass storage mode...
Will keep you updated... :victory:

[Q] USB cable only charge the phone after cm10

Hello I have galaxy s1 i9000 and a few months back I rooted it and installed CM10, everything is working fine but just recently I found out that the USB cable is no longer working for data transfer.
Whenever I plug the phone with a computer it just charge (I use the original data cable I got with the device).
On win7 it tells me there is a usb device connected but it fails to install a driver for it, note here that I have used the phone in the same computer before rooting to CM10. I downloaded and reinstaled the samsung driver but nothing changed.
I tried it in my macook as well, OSX 10.9 no love there either, while it worked before the rooting too.
I tried other cables that I confirmed they work with other phones but still no luck.
Any idea on what to do? It is really a pain to move photos from the phone to my pc by sending them with email...
Thanks

Did you enable USB storage on your phone after connected?
Scroll down upper left screen part, (where the Cid's head is watching and says "USB debugging connected")

I;m not sure about where you tell me to go, but I think this is about the USB debugging option?
I have USB debugging enabled in developers options but nothing happens, as a side note if I check in networking options for USB tethering it says USB is not connected.
Also I have changed in storage->USB computer connection to mass storage, MTP and PTP but nothing make any of my computers to see the device.

Look the attachments.
Can't you enable it so? Scroll down upper left corner of the home screen and it should appear: "Touch to copy files from/to...."
If you click that, second menu appears and you turn it on by clicking on the bottom filed.

Yes this is the original and I tried 2 other USB cables, all confirmed to be working with other android phones, as I said this started after the root and the CM 10 installation maybe something is broken deeper than I can go.
Anyway thanks for your time, for the time being the only way I have found to backup my pictures is from kies air, I guess the only option is to try some factory reset sometime.

Try to connect to another USB port, sometimes it helps.
Do you use pawitp's CyanogenMod build or is it modified?
Otherwise, as you have root you can also use app "Samba filesharing" and transfer your files from the phone to the PC via Wi-Fi

Thanks mate, for you too (oh, I see it's your very first "thanks" credit from me )
BTW, yes- it is pawitp's build then, it is the great developer for the i9000
As soon as you use Kies, you have ceirtanly installed USB driver already. Try to kill Kies process in task manager next time. It must work!
Just want to add a close to this thread.
After all this time I got myself a newer LG L90 405n, so I decided to wipe clean the galaxy s1 and use it as a media player.
To my surprise now the data cable works like no problem.
I guess it was just some corrupted file after all

Can't enter in flash mode

Hello to all,
I would like to install a custom ROM but unfortunately my phone doesn't want to enter in flash mode! Once switched off, I plug it to my computer while keeping vol down button pressed but instead of entering in flash mode, it displays the battery charging icon.
I hard reset the phone but the problem still remains. Any idea.
Thanks, have a nice day!
My guess is either the USB cable (did you use the OEM cable?) or the drivers (does windows recognize your phone?). Removing the SD card or first entering recovery were suggested earlier (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-l/help/update-volume-connect-doesnt-t2613733). But more experiences Z3c owners may have better ideas...

Using flashtool:
Turn phone off completely.
Start flashtool, choose flashmode and choose which firmware you are going to use. Tick Exclude TA.. Click on flash.
It will start preparing the build and after a few seconds it will ask you to connect the phone.
Plug the phone in while holding volume down, as soon as flashtool starts doing something, you can let go.
If you don't know how to use flashtool then I urge caution, Sony's aren't like flashing a Samsung, it is actually possible to brick your phone with flashtool. There are lots of questions on 'how do I fix my phone?' in this Q&A thread from people who didn't read up on what they were doing.
Recommend you read bilboa1's great guide on what to do, starting with backing up your TA partition..
Thanks for your answers but I think the mini usb from my phone must be dead.
About Flashtool, I can't use it because I can't go into Flash mode! Moreover, my phone is not recognized by windows. I tried with several usb cables and computers when I plug it, I don't have any MTP or PTP choice, it can only charge..
On Windows 10, devices is not recognized and Window 7 see it as a 5880!
And I tried to remove SD and SIM cards..

If the USB lead was dead you wouldn't get the charging icon on your phone.
Have you installed the Sony drivers.
You also need to run exe in the Drivers folder within Flashtool, to make sure you have correct flashomde drivers available. Installing these drivers is very difficult in Windows 10 and it require restarting the machine in safe mode, and going into the advanced settings to disable driver signature checking, this how to video is for windows 8, but you'll get the idea
Have you installed ADB?
Sonys PC Companion should set you up with the correct connection to your PC
Have you tried other USB cables?

Yes, I've installed PC Companion, adb drivers but nothing appears when I use command "adb devices". I've also installed flashtools drivers but deactivating drivers signatures in Windows. But when I try to flash, flashtool ask me to turn my device in flash mode (switch off then volume down + power) but I can't do that.
I've tried several usb cables. Some are charging my devices, some are aren't but none of them allows me to data transfer!
I've also tried to force MTP or PTP usb transfer in developper option, it doesn't work more..

Do you have any warranty on your phone, you could be right that the usb socket is damaged somehow, but it's strange that you can still get a charge through it.
Your only chance at moving to a custom rom change is flashfire
This should let you flash a rom without recovery.
Edit: Flashmode is just holding down just - volume button, not volume+power
Obviously your chances of rescuing a failed install are going to almost zero without recovery and flashtool, so be very very careful about what you try and flash in flashfire. Read up completely that the rom you want to flash is going to work pushed on top of whatever you are running at the moment.
For anyone who might be interested, sometimes you have to try a USB 2.0 port or just a different port. I had the same problem while using a usb 3 port, switched to 2.0 worked like a charm.
Try to open the back of the phone and removing/unplugging the battery wait 5 seconds and then put it in again. Then try holding down the volume down button while you connect a usb cable.

USB connection dialogue not showing up, unable to connect

I have a very weird issue with my S10: it wont connect via usb to pc. Once connected a notification should display and the option "file transfer" should be there, but no such menu appears. When i plug it in to a pc it just starts charging, the pc also does not see a (bad) usb connection or whatever. I have been reading fora and watching youtube for over 1,5 hours. I feel now is the time to ask for help.
What might be usefull context: i have had the "moisture detected" error many times, it started showing up 2 weeks after i bought the device. Gladly i mainly use wireless charging so effectively it hasnt bothered me much, but it was weird since even after waiting for hours for the phone to dry (i dont think it was wet but whatever) the error was still there. One week ago the problem got quite severe, lasted for more than 24 hours and it just refused to charge, tried rebooting, turning it off, going into safe mode... to no avail. I had no wireless charger then, it was nasty.
I am using the usb cable provided by samsung (but used two others as well).
What i tried:
wiping cache and data from usb settings
wiping cache via recovery
reinstalling samsung drivers to pc
looking for a yellow exclamation mark in device manager on pc (not there)
different usb cables
different pc's
different ports on pc
rebooting the phone
booting in safe mode
installed dex on pc
via developper mode select file transfer as standard
via developper mode select any of the other modes to see if that helps
via developper mode revoked usb debugging authorizations
via developper mode enable usb debugging
The next logical step seems a factory reset. I am unwilling to do that however, since there are many gigs of photo's on the device that i want to backup first (the whole point of trying to connect it via usb heheh).
Your advice please!
Your could try to reflash your present OS via Odin but when doing so remember to use HOME_CSC. This way your data will be present when done flashing and phone reboots.

How he can do the flash with odin when phone is not recognized by the computer !
Clean the charging port with a clean toothbrush and try again ... Also make sure that the charging cable supports data transfer ... If you tried all of these things and did not work, then most likely the charging port has a problem that may be oxidized or cut in the tracks..Try the solution that I gave it to you, and if it doesn't work, take it to a technician
charge from the wall.
I too have a similar predicament. Tried all the cables and USB ports I could get my hands on... I have a custom ROM also, so it could be that. I have done a full format and reflashed ROM (from SD card) - but it made no difference, the phone refuses to communicate via USB.
SO, if you have any solutions, please let me know!
I can however communicate via ADB over network. So, if you know some adb commands you can pull over an entire folder with the "adb pull" command.
