Your Best Features of Android/Nexus? - Nexus 4 General

What do you think are the best features that your nexus 4 is capable off.
Personally I think the fact you can use it as a gaming console (ps3 controller and hdmi output) is a fantastic feature of the phone.
Also the fact I can use it as a tablet type device by reading pdfs (essential for work) and as a media centre with the music and films.
What are your favourite features of this phone and of android in general?
This could be a useful thread for people to learn about things they weren't aware of . So what aspects do you enjoy the most?

The ability to make phone calls and text are two of my favorite features. I don't know what I'll do without these two important features.

Does anyone else have any tips for what android can really do?

It can be better than an Iphone at half the price.

I'll go with Android in general.
The communities these devices generate.. All the way back from lurking SDX Developers to present day to being a heavy poster on XDA.. I've enjoyed every minute I lurk and post on these boards. You meet some interesting folks, you have some great laughs, some not so great arguments, and more importantly constantly learning... If you're willing to listen.. There is always someone around here willing to help another person out.. All you gotta do is ask.. And if you get bored.. You can pick any thread in the development section, start from page one and just read.. You're bound to learn something new..

The best feature of Android is IMO that it is open source and the best feature of the Nexi is IMO that they run clean Android and have full fastboot support.

having used an Android phone since the OG Galaxy S (Captivate), i've really come to love that the Nexus isn't locked to any particular carrier, and has no bloatware. in the past, i've always felt like i had to root and ROM my phones the moment i got them, just to get rid of AT&T's craptastic pre-loaded apps. i've had my N4 for nearly 3 whole months and haven't found a NEED to mod it at all (i still may in the future because of a desire to, but the need isn't there).
that's why i love the Nexus...

Off contract, unlocked, open file system.
I've been firmly entrenched in Apple's ecosystem for almost 30 years, and while most apps still exhibit more polish on iOS... Android is catching up.
Nexus 7 was the first Android device that impressed me, and Nexus 4 is more of the same. While I initially missed the ability to communicate via AppleEvents to my server, I managed to solve that problem and there is now very little iOS abilities I miss on Android.

best feature is that i bought one for $220 from a friend of mine

Wow, an sdx reference. Didn't see that coming. They were instrumental in making the SPH-M920 aka Samsung transform aka god awful slider phone halfway decent. Vampirefo was the kernel developer I followed. Ahhh memories. Anyway, my favorite feature as far as the nexus is concerned is the updates.... Like all of them. On time and with a quickness.

Although I've been strictly nexus since the galaxy nexus, these devices do have bloatware (to me)
I hate having Google plus and these other useless Google apps, can't even uninstall them, still love the nexus devices better than any other, but this is my only complaint

co-sign. I really dislike every "skinned" theme that carrier phones come with. Although if I HAD to be stuck with one I guess Id choose sense....I guess lol

I love how easy it is to access Google Now. On the Galaxy S3, you have to hold the home button, then two the Google Now icon.
Keyboard is pretty cool too.

Bored of Android

I have a EVO but Android is boring me I have ADD and I like change. Any new phones coming that are powerful but not Android or wm or a bb. I'm on sprint now I would get a iPhone for the change but doesn't look like ones coming any time soon

I hate to break it to you, but Android is probably the most diverse smartphone OS you're gonna find. The iPhone is locked down tight, and WM7 doesn't seem nearly as much fun to play with (in my opinion). Have you rooted your Evo? If so, maybe you should try different types of ROMs? The Sense 3.0/2.1 ROMs are very nice, and Cyanogenmod is a slick (yet drastic) change from Sense ROMs.

Exactly. If android bores you than your not gonna last more than a day or two with WP7 or iOS. Also, the only hardware anywhere near as powerful as what you have is going to come on one of those 3 platforms. Root your phone, theme your phone, do anything you want, but android is surely your best bet at staying entertained.
I have rooted my phone with everything and I just can't find something that satisfies me anymore.

buy an windows mobile 6 device and have fun with theming and changing everything also you are not so mainstream with wm 6, this means more girls 4 you (maybe)
It sounds like maybe you should find a hobby.... I for one like to fish : )
Or maybe you just are bored period....I would suggest taking your phone apart to the last bit of it and then trying to put it back blindfolded.....fixed me up when I was bored with mine
you should study how to make apps for your phone.

Totally agree. I played around with my brother's iPhone and it is not exciting at all. Apple does have good games and better tested apps but the phone itself is boring. I jailbroke my iPod Touch 4 cause I wanted something similar to the android experience.

Whats your opinion on windows phone 7

so just the other day i've had my first experience with windows phone 7 while changing apn settings for a customer and i have to say, it's a respectable mobile platform. If i was forced to choose a non android phone, my next phone would be windows phone. So im just wondering others opinions
It's not bad, very usable. Too bad it doesn't support dual core yet.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
It would be good in my opinion of it had a more modifying and customization expect. But it seems to be too empty and not very entertaining to me.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I think windows phone 7' will be a big hit for Microsoft and lifesaver for Nokia..... Let's see.
Sent from Galaxy Note GT - N7000 using XDA Premium
Imo it didn't need it. It ran so Smooth that I didn't notice it was single core

Same here. If they would implement a theme system it would be allot Better

For now it's a life saver for Nokia. But if any other vendors like Samsung or htc Nokia will be in deep s**t again
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Good god I'm waiting for the fanboys to pile in here......
But, yes, it's a great OS. I have one, got my mom one who didn't want an iphone. It's great. But yes, the lack of customization is a downside, especially if coming from android. I think some themes in the way of background pictures or a lwp would be great, awesome for the people who have alot of tiles and therefore spend some time scrolling through the home screen. It's very intuitive with very little options, which like iOS, is why it's intuitive. Big reason I don't recommend android to people not able to pick up tech and "know" how to use it. It was a much needed change to save microsoft's mobile market. Too bad, I don't see it selling much. Walk into the store and the idiotic sales people will point you straight to an iPhone or Android device and sway you away from looking at the WP7. Then there is the "flashy" aspect. Walk in the store and ignore everyone and your eyes will be drawn to the cool factor of iOS and Android. Just my 2 cents and take it for what it's worth.
smooth and stable. I think, it lacks a few apps but there are alternatives.

What fun things can I do, other than emulators?

I have an iPad 4th gen, snagged the Nexus 7 32gb for emulator use and to tinker with.
4.1.2 (as 4.2 broke sixaxis for me).
what other fun things can I do other than NES/SNES/PSX emulation?
what can this thing really do that an iPad can't at this point?
Thanks guys! Digging my first android Tablet thus far!
Download a dosbox application and play older PC games.
Download GrooveIP lite (free) and grab a free Google voice number to turn your tab into a giant mobile phone.
Download a GPS app, get a mount for the car and have a nice 7" GPS with 3d turn by turn nav. I use copilot with the north american maps - activated 3d and voice turn by turn for $7.99.
Just a few I can come up with off the top of my head.

Not much really u got basicly a premium experience with the iPad, but one thing u can do that's unique is try out different launchers to change the look of your homescreen/app drawer, you can change icons, layout, etc. And if you really want to get down and dirty with theming you can flash a custom Rom with a theme manager and in the play store there are a bunch of themes to try to ur liking just be sure to make sure the theme is cm10 compatible, glad ur liking ur nexus 7

Google "Tasker". It lets you program your tablet to do pretty much anything.
Mine sounds Ships Bells every half hour, turns off wifi at night, starts the music player when I plug in headphones, and interfaces with RFID cards.
On my list is to have the tablet respond to a text message with a message giving a Google map showing its current GPS location,
and maybe a photo of its surroundings. Sky is really the limit.
And calling the iPad a premium experience is really a matter of taste. It would not be to me.

I respect your opinion on the iPad. Before hating on the apple bandwagon, the iPad 4th generation is VERY slick.
One thing i noticed on the nexus 7 is fast scrolling in apps like facebook isn't fluid. often I find it studders/pauses. Nothing crazy or bad, but if you really sit down with the iPad and keep an open mind - it's a very fluid experience.
The downside is how locked down the ecosystem is, which is where android shines. They both have their pro's and cons. I like them for what each of them have to offer. I'd never limit myself to just one platform. You limit so many possible experiences and gadgets....... and i love me some gadgets

Doesn't the note only have a 1280x800 display? I wouldn't compare the iPad to the Note 10.1, the iPad would win hands down. However, comparing the iPad to the Nexus 10 or Asus Infinity would be a much better comparison.

Think he likes iphone's size but not the OS itself. So emmmm u should go for a smaller Andriod device I suppose.
Why dont u share the factors causing u to go for Nexus 4 despite it sheer size?
Dalvik is integral in the android ecosystem.
Have you tried a flip phone?
swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2

Yes, good experience with google contacts, google talk, google+, google navigation, google play books
good experience with AirDroid, GoldenDict, SMS backup+ on Android
iOS is smooth than Android, but something I mind: iCould is not as good as google contacts, not good support for google talks, I'm in China, If I want to use Google+, I have to jailbreak. I don't like jailbreak even though I go first root for Nexus, cause I use VpnRoot and market unlocker to buy apps.
the battery always make me upset, I own both Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, but I still have to charge them twice one day.
Yes, there are many small size android phone, but the specs of them is not as good as Nexus 4, and I like the pure Android ROM, only Nexus 4 is the first be updated phone.
the most key factor, if there is a google contacts app on iOS, I'll dive to iPhone without hesitate although other cons.
Thread closed as has no purpose. There is a stuck thread comparing the Nexus 4 and any other phones so please use that if you want to compare.

What do you dislike most about Nexus 4 or Android in General?

Personally I hate Nexus 4 for not having hardware home button, expansible storage. All browsers including chrome dolphin, maxthon, opera and firefox are all big let down. Children don't like to play nexus 4 or any phone without hardware home button because they accidentally press any of the soft buttons while playing game. If I disable soft buttons then it will be hard for them to quit one game or app and choose another. And not everyone can disable soft buttons because they want to root their devices.
This why they love iPhone and galaxy phones.
This question is also linked to a survey for my university project.
Thank you for answering.

The lack of expandable storage is all I can really fault my Nexus 4 for.. the only other minor gripe I have is the default software keys, which take up screen space I'd rather have, BUT in saying that, I don't dislike the idea of software keys. CyanogenMod's PIE keys are awesome in expanded desktop mode with the status bar visible.
What's the survey about?
Mostly the lack of expandable storage in some phones... Being able to use an sdcard is what convinced me to switch from Iphone. Also carriers need to get better about updating the OS..

If linked to a uni project as you claim then expect a poor grade - you just skewed your potential sample wildly by expressing such a strongly biased set of opinions.

Is this thread really necessary? In my opinion I do my research first before I buy a phone, what comes with it, what it looks like etc...
we don't need any more topics and people complaining as its just cluttering the threads.
If you like an iPhone go to an iPhone forum and Galaxy go to the Galaxy section and good luck on waiting on updates because our beloved hated nexus device will get it first.
So next time before you start complaining, know what your buying first!
@thesoupthief, i do agree with you (If linked to a uni project as you claim then expect a poor grade - you just skewed your potential sample wildly by expressing such a strongly biased set of opinions)

Nothing. This is the best phone I've ever had, including all the iPhones I've owned.

The only con I have is no LTE or difficult to get LTE. That's it. And maybe no removable battery

for me, i loved the softkey button. it ensures that i dont have to worry about loose button or that feeling of worn button.
i play heavy games aswell, modern combat 4,some dungeon crawler, most of the games that required my fingers to always move, and it has never been much of a problem about accidental home key pressing.
as for storage, i came from an xperia X8, arc s and now nexus. when i was using X8 and Arc S, i thought that sd cards will allow me to install more apps (heavy gamer) and never have i been so wrong. yes we can move apps to SD, but internal memory also play an important role and in X8 and Arc S only 300+mb was given, this was an issue for me.
so now im using a nexus device, i never worry much about installing apps, as 16GB given is 16GB that can be used for whatever i wanted.
just my 2¢
Hit Thanks if I helped : from Tapatalk
OTG and LTE ironic how the two major issues are just 3 letters.

NOTHING! AH AH AH A
Just the hangouts app replacing GTalk in Android 4.3, that's all
Very good thread. Finally something different than these worshipping topics where users describe their erotic feelings towards nexus devices.

Power button can be tricky to press
Miss having external SD card
Weak vibration
Glass back apparently fragile though I've had no issues
Love stock android though
I hated my GNex for its non-expandable storage and soft buttons. I was determined not to make the same mistake again. So imagine my utter despair in April when I opened my N4 and tried to install my newly purchased 64gb sd card and realised there was no slot. And no, not again, no home button. Google, you suck.
If only there was some way for people like myself and the OP to find out about these major faults BEFORE we buy a new phone. I just hope when I open my next Nexus phone Google have added a sd card slot and a big whopper home button.
I am a Nexus fan, always have been. Nexus is not perfect, no phone is. Someone will ALWAYS find something wrong with any device. If it has a "home" hard button, they complain about copying off Apple. If it has software buttons, they complain they hit them accidently or whatever. Apple has a vision for their devices - the style, OS, etc. Google has their style too which is nothing like Apples, which is good. Nexus is never top of the line OMG got to get that phone 'cause the camera is so good and I have oodles of storage. It's a really good phone made for everyone, not just the techies or those with disposable money that can afford a $650 phone. Google is appealing to the mass, not the niche crowds and for that, kudos.
My Nexus doesn't have the best camera, but it's good. Most other things are simply minor. Like another poster said, do your research when buying a phone. Don't just pick one up and buy it. Do reviews on it before you buy...that way, you are not suprised and know exactly what you are getting and what others say about it.
I love my S3 for all it's coolness, storage, camera (love it), display, etc...but I only use it for a week or so then go back to my Nexus 4. There is simply nothing like a Nexus.
The camera is the weakest link of this phone.
Actually I am using S2 a the moment and I must say that I really don't like the physical home button anymore. Nexus Navbar rules for me, I find it very comfortable. What I don't like about N4 is glas back and non removable batery. Camera could be little better (but it's not a deal breaker). Otherwise...I really don't think I am gonna replace it very soon. N4 has everything I need and many more. I am totally satisfied with the performance.
