i share my captivate with my chinese fiance and would like to know how to keep the phone english but have the ability to text in chinese for her. is this possible?
i did search the forums but they seem to have chinese and want english. i only want to text in chinese? how can i do this?
I beleive the gingerbread keyboard from the android market has the ability to switch languages by swiping the space bar. (Its in the settings and you have to enable it)
Give it a shot
edit : And I gotta say, its pretty cool to be able to type in Chinese. I kinda wanna learn it LOL
many of the swypes in the custom roms now have 32 languages available
thanks supaphreek and TRusselo. im running froyo and i guess its time to update to gingerbread to get those languages. does kies provide it (GB) now? i have to unrooted to run kies mini, right? anything else i have to do before running kies mini?
i want FF3.0 also so i guess this is the week i will have to fix or break my phone.lol
my first new ROM, i am so scared to brick.
Install Google Pinyin ime from the market. Easiest way to get Chinese input. Works in any version of android.

You don't need to flash an entire new rom or even GB to get this feature. Its as simple as opening the market on your 2.2 or even 2.1 device and downloading an application called "Keyboard from Android 2.3" developed by Steven Lin. Once youve installed it, go into settings > Locale and text > (Now check the Gingerbread Keyboard box) and then go into Gingerbread Keyboard settings > Input languages > here you would select what languages you need.
FYI, i dont think this application has any chinese languages... but then again, i cant read chinese so im not really sure, i just dont recognize any chinese symbols.
There may be another app or a language pack that could help you out.

i cant access the market. im in china using my fiance's sim chip. when the chip is in her crackberry it runs internet but in my captivate it says unable to open page. however, when i go to a hotel lobby i can run wifi and my browser (cant run wifi on my home router because as TRusello explained to me some chinese routers run on channels higher than 12 and this is the case with my router.) i dont know how to change channels on the router.
i read some post that said google will start banning rooted phones. is this true? if so, should i unroot to use kies or access the market. i ask because i am going to hong kong next week where there is uncensored internet and hopefully i can access the market after buying a ten dollar sim offered in vending machines.

that's an ime make by baidu.com aka the chinese google, and host by them. not sure if the ui has english, but guess ur wife can figure it out if she knows how to type chinese. That should do the trick before u get to hong kong. On the side note you probably need to set up the apn to get edge access in china depends on ur carrier. and no 3g for us phones on china mobile since they use some unique 3g network designed by themslves. if u know what ur carrier is i can help u to look up the apn.

she is on china mobile.
i found a way to access android market in english even though its a chinese site:
https://market.android.com/?hl=en
i am wondering if i make an account, will google recognize my phone imei and prohibit me from having a usa and chinese android market account. my chinese account would have a different login and phone number but like i said same imei number for my phone. does google check imei's?
why does everything have to be so backwards in china?
also, we can get texts in chinese but can only send texts in pinyin (romanized form of chinese.) so at least we are not totally without communication,as far as texting, and her mom knows pinyin but her dad doesnt.

What ROM are you running? Stock or custom ROM. Also what carrier
I'm running MeDroid - v6.1 - 7.2. My carrier is Mobilicity.
Not too familiar with that ROM or carrier but look to see if you have any kind of settings to change User's Agent. Look in the stock messaging app.
I do have an option to change user agent...which one shouls I use?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA
Find a device that you know is an official phone for your carrier. Nokia N95 work for most.
Is there anyone successfully sort first name in Contacts? I did try to set it from display option with all sources, any hints? My previous HTC Desire Z works fine with it, not sure is Galaxy Note bug or not.
Open contacts tab, menu/settings/more/display options, it's in there. Works fine on mine with stock gb.
What ROM are you on?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I knew the option of sorting and display function at there, similar to other android mobile, i can change sort by or display by last name or first name, but just has no different, always sort and display last name first, strange.
My GNote is the original rom, from Hong Kong, whatever the previous and update firmware, language setting, data source, no different.
I have posted a message on SONY official forum last 2 days ago
(I can't post a outside link here, but you can search for thread number 123292).
I just got my new smartphone - Xperia Z for 3 weeks. BUT!, It comes with a huge annoying bug.
I loves this phone, its features are very satisfy mine. NOT for this bug, it's too serious to be accepted.
It is... crashing app bug, not just an unimportant app. It happen to "Gmail App".
I guess, most of user who used their smartphone. They like to send or read an email via their smartphone.
What's happen if you can't use your smartphone as it should be? That was happen to me. :crying:
When I tried to read an email (some of email), it was bouncing back to home screen.
I'm not sure this is because of Thai language or not. Neither way, not sure cause' Android (Jelly Bean) or its Xperia Z's Rom.
This was happen to "Google Now" too. In some keywords, problem like Gmail App will occur.
Assume to this bug, I thought SONY might doesn't like Thai people OR Google (Android 4.1 Jelly Bean) neither too. :crying: Didn't They?
IF NOT, I really hope, SONY will fix this for us (for Thai user)....if not THIS IS WILL THE LAST XPERIA's PRODUCT I EVER BOUGHT

As for whether SONY doesn't like Thai people, I can't answer that.

Since the GMail app is a stock google app, it would be premature to start screaming nonsense like "Sony hates Thai". Where did you get the Z from? Is it a correct, Thai-region set or a parallel import (different regions will have different language packs...)?

From Singapore, Did android won't support for mulit-language? If you believe my Z's fault because it's coming from different regions of mine.
Then, why last released Xperia Series like Xperia T, TX, V and J still have that problem I was concerned about?
Those Xperia devices are using the Jelly Bean (4.1) released from SONY ... THE OFFICIAL ONE ... that BUGGY still persist.
"SONY hates Thai" ; I'm just teasing with that. It doesn't mean SONY hates Thai for real (or real?... I don't know).
Point is not SONY hates Thai or not, It is to drive SONY to fix that issue.

Phones that are officially released and certified for the Thai language should have no problem at all unless you messed with OS settings, etc.
Phones from singapore are designed for the local singapore languages, mainly Chinese and English.
However, basic language interaction and support for most Asian languages is built-in to android, and there should not be an issue with a non-sony, stock android app. Do you have the same issue with any other phones? If you flash a cyanogenmod ROM onto one of your phones, or have access to a Nexus device for stock Jellybean, do you have the same issue?

I never try a cyanogenmod's Rom on Xperia Device yet, just a official rom I used. Neither the nexus device too.
There is one fact that you should know about SONY in Thailand. In Thailand SONY's company is
just a DEALER not a official BRANCH from SONY International.
That mean, they won't customize ROM on their own, Rom will be customized from manufacture country in the first place.
According to the last series of Xperia (T/V and J), they are already official released in Thailand's market for a while.
If you said phone's ROM should be optimized for its local language, then why those Xperia devices still have trouble with Thai language?
Although they were used only a official rom from SONY - NO CUSTOMIZED, NO MESS UP the OS Setting.
Xperia Z was a great device, unique design, powerful horse, great water and dust proof all of those features, I loves it.
BUT if the smartphone can't act like it should be - read/write an email, search the content user wants. IT WORTHLESS.

Well, do any of your friends have the same issue? In other words, is there something special about your thai username (very long, etc) that maybe the mobile applications cannot handle? Have you tried on any other Android device?
Got a same problem.
I am using C6603 and having the same problem reading e-mail. It's actually happen with every e-mail application. I have done with GMAIL, stock EMail and MailDroid app with the same output.
I don't think it caused by Thai characters since I have tested send/receive a plain text e-mail with only Thai character both on the subject field and content field without any errors open and read it.
Try to do factory reset if needed.

Perhaps you can use the email app and sign in whit your gmail instead of using the gmail actual app ? And thread title is very misleading..

I'd doubt the app crashes because of your language, but you could try setting another language to see if the problems still persist.
- Delete all your accounts at Settings
- at Settings go to Xperia than Internet Settings (will reinstall internet settings obvious)
After you done this, does the problem still persist?
if so Disable Sync (that's in your accounts..)
----
If that doesnt work, root it, install recovery and flash latest gapps
CM10 work fine but no camera
I use stock rom and RomAur with English language. I fould bug
- Facebook close when open group page - Every time ==> Friendcaster is work fine / no FC.- Gmail/Email close -Some time in any language mail
I had install CM10 on my Xperia Z, and Facebook app is work fine and email no test yet
