Having problems rooting my Nook HD - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, here it is, I want to root my Nook HD. The only thing I really want to put on it is Gapps. The Software version on it is 2.0.6 and I'm using Windows 8. I have ADB working but for some reason I can't get adb to recognize my nook drivers. I've tried updating them and they say that they're completely up to date. My laptop recognizes my nook just fine when I plug it in. What have I done wrong?

Highly recommend this approach instead, no adb required. Plus you can UN root after gapps install if you want.

Gapps working

Pulled this off of the Kindle Fire HD thread, seems to work fine on otter2.
1. Enable installation of applications from unknown sources in Kindle Fire Settings.
2. Install GoogleLoginService.apk.
3. Reboot.
4. Install the Google Apps.
5. Start YouTube. Sign In. It will take you to Google Account Manager to create/use existing Google credentials.
6. Same goes for other apps. In case sign in fails for any of the apps (except Maps/GTalk) drag down the Kindle Fire notification bar, click on the notification for "Permission requested....." and assign required permissions.
The files can be downloaded from here

Root and Gapps Working for me.
I was able to use the same Root Method that the HD uses to gain root on My Fire2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893838
After Getting Root I used this method to get the Market/Play Store working.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893410
After I got both working I was able to install HoloLauncher HD. I moved it from data/app to system/app
and set the permisions to rw-r-r. A reboot gave me the option to select my default launcher.
I may not have a Custom Rom due to the locked bootloaders
but atleast I can enjoy a nice Android experience and use some of the Apps I purchased now.

Oh nice man!
What software version did your kf2 have?
If it was 10.1.3 I'm deff gonna follow your steps..
Yes I have the 10.1.3 update. I actually rooted it before I got the update and had to re-root the 10.1.3.

Awesome man, gonna start the rooting process now. Thanks a ton for sharing the info with me.
So.. if it's rooted and I still hate this thing, what are the steps to unroot and return to stock??
You can try this. Download the update and see if it will install back to 10.1.3

[Q] USB drive and HD+ rooted

Apologies if this is a stupid question. I have a rooted HD+ with stock. If buy one of these (USB gender changer) can I then mount external USB drives? This is not a deal breaker or crucial just a matter of curiosity.
No you would need a cm based rom

Thanks I suspected as much.
If you don't want to change your Nook you could setup VeryGreen's development SDcard which does not change the Nook but also gives you access to the cool features. I am doing that running stock rooted and booting to the SD when I need a feature that isn't available on the Nook software.

Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature for rooting the stock ROM. And no, there is no overclock kernel available.

Extras zip? I have not had that available for months. But I do have an Enable Unknown Sources zip if that is what you meant. If you flash that it sets the setting for you.
If you use a third party file manager to install the apk, it should work. If not flash it again.

dude you rock. I just flashed enabled and now I can install other apps. I installed adaway and also blocked bandn source for ota update.
everything is good now, thanks so much,
now we just need someone to build a kernel that will help maximize the ram

I installed nova launcher and now it looks like a regular android tablet and much faster ui. I'm very impressed with the nook. if it had 1 gig of ram or quad core this would be the best android tablet. the screen is amazing. on par with iPad 3

[Q] Stock Root Rom USB Host & Sixaxis Support

I installed CM 10.2 emmc only to find out the sixaxis won't connect over bluetooth anymore, the whole reason I wanted to root. So does the sixaxis work with a stock rooted rom 2.2.0? Also does USB host work with it?

If you look in the accessories forum, there is a thread discussing that. And I don't think USB host works on stock, but search to find out for sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't device spoofer just for installing and running apps on devices that the apps aren't intended to run on? I'm just trying to pair the ps3 controller with my nook HD. From all the reading I've done, google kind of broke Bluetooth with 4.2. My iPhone would pair with stock nook is so I was hoping maybe a rooted stock ROM (2.1.1) would restore Bluetooth even though I'll be stuck with nook os.

I was not pointing you there about the spoofer, if you read the whole thread, it talks about if the six-axis works and on which ROM. It even talks about running stock on SD as a solution. I know nothing about any of it.

I must have missed it. Thanks for your help pointing me in the right direction
Ok. I installed CWM and rooted 2.1.1. Got the Sixaxis working but I can't open the cyanoboot menu. I've tried holding the power and "n" button and just the "n" button while booting but can't access the cyanoboot menu. I'm trying to install enable unknown sources but no matter what I do I can't access the boot menu. If it helps sometimes when I power back on I get the factory recovery asking if I want to restore to factory maybe indicating something wrong with the CWM install?

No, there is no cyanoboot menu with rooted 2.1.1. You have to boot using the bootable CWM SD that you used to flash the Universal Root zip.

[Q] Installing apps from unknown sources?

Hey guys I just recently got a used Nook HD+ and I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a way for me to turn on the option to install apps from unknown sources. I would like to know if there is a way to trick the nook into letting me do this if I can't do this legit. Its got the latest nook software I think. Software 2.2.0. This would be a great help because I would like to install some apps I got from humble bundles!
