I am trying to find a USB hub that will work well with my Nexus 7, via an OTG cable, for a semi fixed car installation. I picked up one of these USB hubs a week or two ago, but I am not sure its going to be reliable enough.
I tested out with my iPod, plugged directly into the OTG cable, the Nexus picks it up and allows me to use it as external storage. I then plugged the hub into the OTG cable (Nexus also plugged into charger), plugged the iPod into the hub, and the Nexus tries to connect to the iPod. But, for some reason fails to do so. In the process I can see it mount/unmount to the point that the iPod freezes. When I have all of this set up in my car I want to be able to reliably run the following:
USB Flash Drive 128GB/256GB (in place of the iPod)
USB-DAC
Joycon board (steering wheel controls)
Easycap (reverse camera)
Are there any recommended USB hubs that will work? Since tihs will be installed behind the dash, I want to put something in there, and then essentially forget about it.
Thanks.
Try this, unplug the usb hub, plug all your devices into the hub then connect it back to the otg. You might need a powered hub but try the method I just listed first. Also, are you rooted and have stick mount installed?

I think I already tried this, but will give it another go. I also tried plugging the USB hub into my laptop, still a no-go on the iPod. Everything else I plugged in worked though, but none of it was pulling much power (headset, mouse, cell phone). I could not find a flash drive anywhere at home, so am waiting to pick one up before I try again with a flash drive.

Yes rooted, but do not have stick mount installed as using Timur's ROM, so no need for stick mount.

You need a USB Host to go cable - they are pretty cheap off of ebay.
USB hard drives don't always work - at minimum you will need a powered hub.

i know wht USB on the means but how do i enable it. i have tried connecting with a pendrive with the help of the USb on the cable but it does not show .
Once you plug your on the cable in the phone will inform you that usb connecter s connected. Whatever you plug in at the other end of otg cable work run unless it is not supported.

Just plug it in and look in My files. It will show as usbstorage.
I have an official samsung OTG cable, it works fine on the SGS2, but doesn't appear on the Galaxy Note under usbstorage.
Anyone else out there having similar problems?
i had grab some ebay OtG but after unmount and remove the OTG it causes wakelock which drain alot of juice.
I am also facing problems with OTG . when i plug in the cable thr is not msg nor anything happens in phone. please could any one tell me how to enable it may be with kernel or custom rom or may be anything else.
I also want to know this as well,I have spent considerable time yesterday trying to make this work but no luck at all,I would appreciate if someone could help,as I have seen a video in this forum where the guy was able to.connect a mouse to it stating that it is supported out of the box.
I was able to get it to work with a pendrive and a mouse with no problems, but I couldn't get a keyboard or my 2.5" external drive to mount.
Details:
My OTG cable was from DealExtreme for $2.30 or something.
My pendrive was FAT32 formatted.
My mouse was a basic $10 optical one.
My 2.5" external was NTFS, which probably goes some way to explaining why it didn't work even when I gave it some extra power from my desktop PC too.
My keyboard was a standard USB. I also tried a Logitech keyboard with a wireless USB dongle but that didn't work either.
I watched a whole film off my pendrive with no issues. I messed around with the mouse a bit, but the cursor moved too slowly for my taste and the scroll wheel didn't scroll webpages, which is half the reason I'd plug a mouse in anyway.

If you get no message when the cable is plugged in on it's own, chances are it is a problem with the cable. I bought a cable of Ebay which didn't work, so I bought a different one and that did.

Hi friends,
I want to attach to my touchpad memory card reader and external hard drive.
I wonder if it will be possible instead of buying Y cable and connect it to the OTG, to use my existing USB hub and connect to him the devices and the external battery bank.
Will it work?
Thanks

im assuming youre talking about doing this in android 4.0.x +. if so then yes you should be able to connect an externally powered usb hub to the OTG cable and connect more than one device at a time.
Thanks

Yes. You need to give power to the periphal usb devices. I tried the same yesterday, without problems.
Hey all
I have a powered Belkin USB hub (this one: http://www.belkin.com/us/F4U040-Belkin/p/P-F4U040), coupled with an OTG cable which I know work together, as my Kindle Fire recognizes all USB devices through this setup (Keyboard, Mouse, Flash Drive etc).
I was surprised to find that my HP touchpad does not recognize any devices connected to this hub.
I did some diagnostics with USB Device Utility, and the touchpad recognizes my USB OTG cable, as it shows as a 'Qualcomm On-Chip EHCI Host Controller'.
The touchpad simply does not see anything plugged into the hub, be it a keyboard, mouse or flash drive.
Please help me here, guys!
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Are you sure that's powered? The picture doesn't show any DC connectors. Is it powered by something like a mini USB to USB cable on the back? If so, that might not be enough to power the device and the peripherals attached to the ports.

The belkin does have an external dc power supply and is not powered via usb
I think you need a Y cable even with a powered hub as its purpose is to inject power back into the OTG chip in the Touchpad.
I have a OTG cable for my nexus 7. I need to connect it up to my computer and a mouse at the same time with a USB hub, How can i connect it to my computer. I have tried a usb-usb cable with no luck
I wonder if a wifi usb dongle would work. I hate that I had to call it a dongle, but I can't think of another word for it right now.
The tablet can either be a host (for the mouse device) or a device (for the PC host), not both at the same time. If you want to use adb while using a mouse, look into wireless adb.
Try Timur's USB Rom

I was wondering, can you use a usb otg with a usb hub so that you can use a keyboard and charge the N7 at the same time?
It probably won't work with a USB hub, because the side of the hub that plugs into the tablet wants to receive power, not give it.
But you can use a Y cable and one of the kernels that provide OTG charging, like Timur's kernel, faux123 kernel, and probably others. Search Google for 'Nexus 7 OTG charging'.

Does the USB port have any other function other than power?
Don't think so, only power AFAIK.
I plugged it into my computer and even tried pressing and pressing/holding the button on the Chromecast but my computer didn't indicate any hardware plugged in.
I wonder if the data pins are even wired to anything internally.
UPDATE: The USB cable that comes with it may not work for data transfer, tried it with my phone and it didn't work. So I tried a normal microUSB cable but still nothing.

It has bluetooth... so in theory that could be a simple alternative... we just need to figure out how to access hidden menus.

I tried this with a self powered USB OTG cable, just to see if the Chromecast would blink, bing, or do anything to show recognition, no dice. Also tried booting with a USB drive in, no difference.

Examining board
Based on examining the photos of the motherboard on ifixit.com...
Component EM1 appears to be a USB Common Mode Choke. That goes on the D+/D- pair which you can see routed from the USB port, so it wouldn't be present if there wasn't some use for data communication over the USB port. (Cost sensitive equipment.) The flip side of the PCBA shows TP1-TP20 (Where TP19 and TP20 appear to be GND). My guess is in that mix you have a JTAG port for programming/testing the unit initially with a pogo pin rig (evidenced by the dimples observed in each of those locations), and there might be more high/low GPIO pins where one might allow the unit to enter its USB data mode.

Looks like its already been rooted. With what looks like a dual usb otg. They don't go deep into what specific cable but, I would guess it is a generic dual usb one off ebay, or amazon, heres a quick one i pulled from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-P...8&qid=1375052489&sr=8-3&keywords=Dual+Usb+otg
But if you read into it, they say you can root, but unless your a developer you probably wont get any benefit of rooting....yet, if at all.

Please correct me if Im wrong, but the cable you linked only charges the thumbdrive/keyboard/mice/etc NOT the Chromecast so how would one root it since it does need power from usb plug? I've been searching for correct cable and cant find it; link to correct cable would be greatly appreciated!!!

I own that cable from Amazon and it should work. It brings in +5v from a charger connected to the female microUSB port and then splits it to the female full size USB port and the the male microUSB port so both the USB host device and the USB peripheral device are getting power.

I also bought that powered OTG cable off Amazon and it will power the Chromecast as well as provide the means to flash the Chromecast via a USB thumbdrive. When you apply power to the Chromecast, it automatically flashed the bin from the USB drive. There was no interaction required (or even possible). Of course this was on the original firmware - if your Chromecast updated itself, you have lost the ability to root the device at this time.
Clearly the Chromecast does sense the USB drive and pulls data from it during the initial boot sequence. However I'm not sure if it would ever work for other devices such as keyboards or storage devices, etc.
I'm not sure why anyone would want to hook those types of devices up to the Chromecast however. Once you have root, you can telnet into the device, so adding a keyboard doesn't seem that important. The whole idea of the device is that you send it media from other devices and control it via that other device. Adding storage for example doesn't seem important since it can pull media off the network already (ie a NAS or another computer).
Anyway. That has been my experience with it so far. It's a long winded answer to more than just your question about the OTG plug.
I would personally love the ability to send audio out without having an hdmi TV be on through the usb somehow...

USB Tethering not working - SGH-i997
Hi all,
i have install Avatar 7.0 to my Samsung SGH-i997 from "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2174227". it's look cool.
But when i am trying to USB Tethering, the massage shows as "Unfortunately,Setting has Stopped".
how to Fix this issue.
I've been searching for a while to solve this.
I'd like to connect my HTC one to my car usb connector.
I've seen several repoirts claiming usb audio works, connecting dac's etcetra.
I know I can connect usb drives with a micro-usb to usb connector, tried it and this works.
But I have also seen people saying you need an USB OTG cable for this, so what is it?
I've already connected my One via the micros-usb to usb cable to my car but I do net get audio via the usb on my car equipment.
So again the question, is audio out available on the htc one (and on other android phones) with the stock rom.
Some of the report where talking about CM roms, I do use the elegancia one but I have no intent of switching to CM.

since the HTC One does not automaticly plug as mass storage i guess that the car radio simply does not recognize the phone as a mass storage with music.. an USB OTG cable would "fix" it since it will force the phone to be shown as mass storage.. (its a guessing anyway)
And you have guessed correctly. The USB otg cable works fine.....except it added ringtones et al when you select root folder. Worked ok if I navigated to the music folder (assuming your vehicle has that option).

Well, for me it does not work.
As I said before I can attach a USB drive to my phone and I can accomplish this by using a micro-usb to usb adapter.
When attaching the drive my phone complains it cannot charge and that I need the standard charger.
But when using a file explorer I can see (read and write) the contents of my usb drive in the storage/usb folder.
I thought this was enough to decide that the converter was OTG but now I'm not so certain about this anymore.
Is every usb to micro usb an OTG or what are the extra requirements?
Anyway I tried again to connect to my car audio and the message I got on the car was
that he could not charge the phone but the phone was as well not recognized as media input.
Because OTG adapters are very cheap I ordered one which explicitly says it is OTG,
I'll see what happens when I can try that one out but in the meantime all comments are welcome.

Yes, the cable I had explicitly said "OTG".
I only experimented with this for fun, my Elantra also supports built in bluetooth (phone controls are on the steering wheel, mic in the roof) so I mainly put my One in my car kit, launch car mode and away I go.
The OTG cable worked well for me when I tried it though. It did NOT work with my Son's Nexus 4 so these things can be finicky.
