When I turn the screen on landscape mode while watching movies or youtube, the softkeys menu will disappeared but that doesnt happen when playing games on landscape mode. The softkeys remains on screen even on fullscreen landscape. It is very annoying.
Is there a way I can make it go away?
Note: I dont have this problem with my old Galaxy Nexus. When the game start, softkeys disappear automatically
No you can't - how else are you gonna access the menu and or go back to the home screen?
Take it as that they are the software equivalent of hardware buttons - there to stay.

But when watching movies they are invisible until the screen is touched so why can't it be the same for games?

It depends on whether the app is coded to show hardware keys or not - and video players usually are less graphic intensive than games to allow the fancy pop-up ui.
Right now, most games/apps are coded in such a way that:
If detect hardware buttons > disable menu bar
If no hardware buttons detected > menu bar will stay no matter what.
For video player, because of the specialized nature of these type of apps, has the menu bar appears in pop-up form when a finger touch is registered. Games can't use this because a finger touch on a game is usually an action in the game itself.
Unfortunately, in a world where hardware buttons for Android are becoming rarer), this is probably the best way around the UI.

when you press the IE button and the Center button it brings up the align screen. This is very annoying while playing games.
i know there has been some apps to disable this for other devices, but what about the kaiser?
you use the IE button while gaming?
no, I haven't found anything about it, but I'm sure that's a registry edit that can be done to stop it.
haha never noticed that, must be extremely annoying while gaming.
yeah when im playing emulators and i have my screen in portrait i usually use the start menu, the IE button, and the Left softkey as my 3 buttons. Then i use the D-pad, but sometimes while playing ill accidently hit the center key.
First of all - I admit complete ignorance of how screen resolution works in android, and how hardware acceleration for video / GL treats the display.
With that out of the way:
I just noticed that the proportions of the NC screen are not exactly like most other android phones which are 480x800, 480/800=0.6, while NC is 600x1024, 600/1024 = .586...)
Looks like we could "steal" 24 pixels at the bottom part of the screen for permanent display of "menu" and "back" (and maybe "search") buttons and still have the rest of display sized so that 480x800 applications would scale up "right". (1000/600 = 0.6)
If buttons are displayed constantly in all applications, e.g. even while video playback or while playing full-screen games, it could very well provide the missing android buttons w/o the need for soft buttons app.... Yeah, I've heard that honeycomb does away with the need for phys. buttons, but honeycomb is not here yet...
I honestly have no idea if this is workable (e.g. it's possible that hardware acceleration for video playback or full-screen games must use the entire screen) but I would love to see what people think....
You should look at what archos does, they lack hardkeys and are sold as tablets.
A proper bar would be nice (especially in froyo) I find myself using the stock nook ones more often then button Savior.

Also, pandigital novel/cruz custom firmware has a nice set of buttons on the status bar. I eould love to see this status bar replace the nook status bar, but have no idea how it would be done.

I'd guess status bar buttons is not enough - that's what we currently have in stock NC firmware - and the status bar disappears on usual occasions (playing video/fullscreen app/game). I'd also venture a guess that in android this disappearance is intentional - because you don't want to pull down notification area while swiping the screen in a game. What I meant is giving up part of the screen for good - just to have it display buttons, so that even the android system is not aware of it. I'd venture a guess that this is best done in the kernel.... BTW for a real life example of this idea, see Samsung Continuum phone with "two" displays made out of single display -
Hey forum.
Had XZ för about 2 weeks now and I'm happy with it... but;
Is there any way to remove the navigation buttons when you play games?
I mean, when you look at videos, they are hidden.
This is so disturbing when you play a game where the controls are pretty much at that location, and you accidently
press "Home" and leaving the game, or "Back" button to go back

Well, as far as I know, all the games got menu that allows the player to exit the game.
You could mention one that doesn't have it?

This app "full!screen" temporary hides the notification bar and replaces the navigation buttons, but does require root.
Did not really bother with the app "buttonsavior" because "full!screen" covers all functions I need.
All you will have left is the BACK button and HOME button, you can set size and transparency \ color.
(These should be set kinda small and transparant and placed in the left and right corner so you do not see them to much.)
Then you can as assign long press and swipe up to each button, so you basically have all functions covered.
- Restore systembar (So you can get your original navigation buttons back anytime you want.)
- Open apps menu (Opens the option menu of the current app.)
- Show notifications (Shows the on-going events of the notification bar.)
- Show recent apps
The only downsides I found are:
- When you restore systembar the battery percentage no longer shows on the official notification bar.
(This is fixed after rebooting the phone, perhaps anyone knows another way of getting it back?)
- I did not find out how to close apps from the recent apps function like you can with the build in task manager.
(This is not a big problem as you can regain the official bars anytime you want.)
I really love using the browser and games using this.
Kind regards, Stefan.

I love the idea of softkeys. With it you can put bigger screens on smaller devices and they can disappear whenever needed to.
The main problem is that it's a 50/50% chance that they will disappear when I think that they should. With physical keys that's never an issue.
Movies, yes
Games, yes
Full screen applications, yes
etc.
What determines when the keys disappear and not? Is it up to the app creator? What can I do about it (I'm not rooted)?
They can't always disappear in full screen games. If the game needs a back button you would be stuck.
I assume there is something in there that tells it. Much like if an app does not have an on screen menu button (usually three dots), a menu button will be added to the lower right side of the portion of the screen where the soft keys are.
It's not there for all apps, only ones that don't have a menu button on screen. Not sure if this is declared by the app or if 4.4 can detect it somehow and show the button when needed.

On my tablet (running 4.1) I get these dots you are talking about (but not in the lower right corner, they replace the ordinary softkeys)). That's all fine because they take less space (from what I remember) then the ordinary softkeys.
If it all comes down to having a back button in the app, why not implement that in the app?
I downloaded crazy taxi yesterday and those softkeys are annoying me as hell.
I ended up getting used to using LMT and just turn on expanded desktop to make the navigation keys go away. That way if LMT gives me any trouble...I just hit the power button and turn off expanded desktop and my navigation keys are back. (Gravity box to get that option in power menu.)
Hated pie at first...but used to it now.

Hi, i have a lumia 535, this phone doesn´t have fisical navigation bar (back, windows, search) it does have a virtual/sofware one, it also auto hides sometimes in some apps, my problem is in some apps/games when it autohides it leaves a black space where it should be the nav bar and in some game/app it doesn´t let you see what is behind it, and you have to play with some elements of the game under this "black space" and in other it also moves the touch areas of some elements of the game/app (li.e.: you have to touch 2 cm down and 2 cm right to click certain button) its like the app is trying to be full screen but this balck space or the navbar doesnt let you see beneath it, any reg tweak or solution to this matter?
Thanks
No
Just wait for the windows 10 mobile final version.
I found that disabling autohide in the Settings, then swiping up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the nav bar and swiping up again to hide it takes care of the screen problem. I wouldn't touch WM10 with someone else's phone for now. The supposed 'final' release will be too buggy.
