greetings,
just got my first android phone a week ago. captivate. kicks arse. anyways ive been wondering if there is a way to 'reverse tether'. in other words share my pc internet with my phone so i dont have to use so much of my data. i dont have wifi on my pc but i have a bluetooth dongle that plugs into usb that enables connection of bluetooth devices. i was thinking maybe i could tunnel thru the bluetooth and somehow access internet thru that. wishful thinking or a possibility?
Actually what u want to do is create a adhoc network where ur computer sends out wifi via a incripted network go to network and sharing center and go to create a adhoc network u can look it up in ur help guide its differing with each operating system hoped I helped

Ad hoc eh? Been seeing ad hoc something-or-anothers in the market and whatnot and wasn't sure what it was. That would be setup within windows on mah pc correct? And then mah phone would just recognize it as an available wifi connection?

Non rooted phones can't connect to Ad-Hoc networks.
Yeah im rooted. Should have made that clear right off the bat, sorry. That being said, it IS possible then to tunnel thru the bluetooth dongle and use my pc's internet? Remember, my pc doesnt have wifi
Just cable internet. Im just looking too leech off my pc with my phone and not vice-versa.

After further investigation pdanet seems to be able to do what I seek. Is this the only/best option?

Since the PC has bluetooth, you can create a Bluetooth NAP or PAN on the PC side. This creates a "personal area network" that you can then connect to from the phone. Some bluetooth PC software supports this, some do not. Depends what your dongle supports!
right on! thanks for the reply.
i was actually trying the PAN option yesterday after discovering it via google. couldnt get it to work tho. i get stuck at the part where i have to select the service i am wanting. it says the only services available from my captivate are Active sync, Headset Gateway, Object Push, Obex File Transfer. Active Sync seemed to be the closest thing but when selected it doesnt add a shortcut in my devices like the options do so i figured it didnt work. far as i know active sync id for winmobile or something anyways so i wasnt counting on it.
Any advise from here? It's all very much appreciated.
This too must have already been covered. I'll look elsewhere.

As said before, unfortunately Android does seem to connect to Ad-Hoc networks easily. If you are running Windows 7, you can use Connectify to create a WiFi hotspot and connect through that.
The other alternate is to create an Ad-Hoc network and join that network. I have not been able to get this working correctly yet but other phones have.
The problem is that the native wpa_supplicant filters all the ad-hoc networks from the wifi network list.
You can get the patched wpa_supplicant with allows you to see all the networks here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
Remember to get the 0.6.x version.
Then I believe you have to set your wifi to use a static ip to be able to connect.
The last time I tried I managed to get a connection on Froyo ROMS but no data. It just might be my settings on either ends.
excellent reply. thanks are in order here.
For closure, I ended up using connectify. Works perfectly.

I guess you need to setup yourr win7 to act as a DHCP or put manual IP to your milestone.

thanks gonna give it a try
I can connect and use wifi at home so I know my wifi will work on my phone. But at school if I try to connect it connects then immediately turns off wifi on the phone. I have an Xperia TL running on AT&T. Does anyone know what I can do?
Re: [Q] WIFI connections
We need more info about the network you want to connect to. First step is to select the right settings and password for the network.

I know I am entering the correct password. It is a Cisco wireless access point and it uses WEP security. I have connected numerous phones and other devices to this network. This is the first time I have had trouble connecting.
I have solved my own problem. I did a repair using PC Companion and everything works as it should now.
I have a need to connect to a WiFi device (Camera) not connected to the internet and be able to get internet data via 4G at the same time. Is it possible to force connection to the mobile network for data with the WiFi on? Rooted on KK.
TIA
All I can think of would be to tether your data, portable hotshot to the camera.

No you can't. I would say tether like the previous post said.

Thanks for the replies.
Any suggestions where I can learn about portable hotspots? Is this a device requiring a separate data plan and acts like a mobile wifi access point? The camera I'm attempting to use wants to be on it's own network.
I've tethered before to a PC thru both USB or Bluetooth, but not familiar with hotspot.
You can do wifi tether on your phone...

I've tried Wifi tethering, but the camera wants to act like a router/master and can not be changed. The SSID and passwords are the only settable things.
Ad Hoc is not an option. It does the address assignment and security password management. Maybe I need a different software on the phone? Or maybe a configuration I'm not doing??
Hello there, this question is regarding the fact that I can't tether my VS 980 to my PC. On my old S4 active, whenever my internet wouldn't work I'd connect to the neighbour's wifi on my phone and tether it to my PC through USB cable and then the internet would work on the PC. After switching to G2, I've noticed I can't get this to happen. When I connect the USB cable I get to options in the internet connection menu which are Ethernet and Modem. I've tried selecting both of these while connected to my neighbour's wifi but nothing happens on the PC.
I'm using xdabebbs VS982.5 ROM if that's important. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers !

There is a Q&A thread for this ROM, however I've never heard of connecting that way with this ROM except with PdaNet. Have you tried the Mobile Hotspot with your data connection?
Edit: The Mobile Broadband Connect (usb) and Mobile Hotspot only work with a data connection, not wifi.

Hello there, it's not the ROM, I couldn't do this with stock either. It's weird because I could do this with pretty much any other android I've owned but the G2 is a different case. I've tried mobile hotspot and it works great on the ROM.
Would you happen to know any workaround for this ?
