Hi. I've had my Z for nearly a week now and it's bloody brilliant!
One question though, there's no option to make video calls even though there is a front facing camera. I've googled this issue and found nothing helpful.
Anyone know why there is no video call function and if it can be added with a replacement dialer or something????
Any help appreciated, thanks.
That I don't know. I use Google Hangout or Skype though. That works fine.
Sorry but almost all android phones doesn't have video call over mobile network

Thanks for replies. I had video call available on my last phone, Xperia Arc, although it was on a custom ROM it was still using the Sony home-screen app. Oh well, I'll find a way eventually...
Skype is great. Used with my Arc, and quality is impressive. And I used it over at&t 3G network, without a problem.
Voice quality is phenomenal!! Like being next door!! Better than using the phone as a phone.
Highly recommend Skype. Plus free Skype to Skype calls!!

Hi thintin,
Have you found a solution to your video call problem? I'm planning to buy Xperia Z, but I definitely need this feature.
I mean, video call via 3G or 4G network.

Hey guys!
is there any mod or app to make video calls with the back camera?
or just get a video call from someone ..
thanks!
You can use Knocking it works nicely and you can even chat with Friends that have the iPhone.

well.. if you want to show to a friend something..
or if a friend wants to show me something (and in that case i don't need to see him)
Knocking is just a streaming right? its means that "my friend" need to connect to the internet ..
there is no way to make a video call?
i know that in NOKIA devices when you make a video call you can choose between the front or back camera
it is very usefull and i'd like to see an app or mod for that
devs! think about it
thanks.
Of course it's streaming... how else can you send the video without internet?

Hey there,
Just wondering what apps works with the front facing camera - I know that Skype for android currently does not support video calling.
Is there alternative app/programs that does support video calling via the front facing camera?
I heard something about 'Quik' or something, but are these programs compatible with say my Skype contact list?
Help would be much appreciated.
I am using oovoo, the only app that doesn't stutter on 3g.
You may also try tango, qik, and the google talk app. I haven't had much luck with those as they all shuttered pretty badly for me.
If you check out the themes and apps section you can find the version of skype that has video chat.

you wouldn't know whether it is smooth via WIFI would u? Nobody has really commented about it in the threads.
From my experience, wifi-to-wifi is quite good. If it's 3G you are after, then prepare for some stuttering...
Enjoy

I was wondering the same...
I don't see the "button" for video calls but, if the phone have a frontal camera it will be for that, right?
Here in "white africa", Poland (sorry to people of Africa...), I can't do video call because that technology didn't arrived here yet...
In Portugal and Italy I start to do video calls since 2003 or 2005 (now I don't remeber very well), ages ago, here I can't even change the basic settings by phone commands.
When I type *111# in the most part of the countries I have access to a few options from the network provider, here is "unknown command"...
But back to the question, how to do video calls with O4X ?
Skype. Is one of the apps u can video call with.

Skype is nice, but not all people have Skype. Is it possible to do video calls over the mobile network?
Tango, Google Talk, those are a few other apps and there are more in the app. Store if u can't find any that won't work then that is really something the phone can't change. I mean one of them should work. U also can use fring or nimbuzz. And people can easily sign up for Skype. It's free.

I'm not talking about apps!
I'm talking about a normal video call...
In other phones when I select a contact I have the options:
*Call
*Video call
**Send message
In this one only normal calls and messages...
How am I suppose to do a video call to a normal phone (that supports video calls, of course) if the person that I want to call don't have an android or iOS or Windows mobile??? Or even if it do, don't have Skype or other app for that???

I believe all android phones (probably all smartphones as well but as I don't own any others, I don't know) are incapable of video calling natively. I remember asking this question when I had my old phone (a motorola milestone) and searching the forums a while back. I doubt it will be implemented in the future but that's just me.

Being like that technology is going backwards... This is a phone and is supposed to make calls and video calls! If I want to use Skype, messenger or other, I use a computer or a pad (cause it's meant to be something between a computer and a phone), but a phone should have a phone function before any other.

It does has a phone option. And video calls are always over dedicated apps like Skype tango Google chat and so on. Just except it. That's just how it is. And I also don't see the issue that an app has to be used for it.

from skype you're able to call to any mobiles and landlines network... and sometimes it can be even cheaper
Well it is really then the other people's issue to not having an smartphone or just signing up for Skype tango Google chat and so they are all free to use. So it isn't really android or lg fault. If people don't have it then that is really there issue. I have no issues video call any of my people because pretty much everyone has a laptop or a smart phone that uses a video call app from some sort. Just except it.

I know that I can use a lot of apps to enter in a video chat, I'm talking about VIDEO CALL!!! Or to explain myself better, in a video phone call!!!
Am I talking chinese???
Since a lot of years ago that operators, Wind in Italy, Optimus and all others in Portugal and a lot of others in other countries offer the video call.
Just need a phone with UMTS, don't need to be a "smart" phone, and the soo much advanced android can't provide that???
Is not an issue of who don't have an android, because they have the possibility to do video call. It's mine, cause even having a f*cking expensive phone, in video calls (not video chat!!!) its useless.
I accept because I don't have other choice.
And it doesn't matter windows phone 7.5 or 8 can't iphone can't of the operating systems just do video calls without dedicated apps period. It has been like that all the time. As long as there has been phones with front camera I can't recall that they were able to just video call if u don't have a camera and dictated app. And u still can do Internet calls. Google voice is a good one.

Just to let you know that when I had my Galaxy S , I was able to make a video call . I've had no luck with my Atrix 4G, or my LG 4X. This was not using any web based utils, but just a standard call with video. I'm not sure if it's carrier dependent , but that was on O2 in the UK.

The only way I know it is that it still uses an app but it is already standard in the phone. I remember that it was called qik and that was pre installed in a few phones that allowed video call. And then tmobile usa allows calling over wifi.

For what I was able to know, android don't have that option.
Its not a problem cause I have the LG GC900, much better camera and I can do video calls like I do normal phone calls.
The difference is that I need to chose the button from the middle I select the one from the left, in contacts I can choose, voice call, send sms or video call...
Maybe one day android start to use that too.
Hi All,

Please help me for this thread..
Do you have tried?
Tried Skype?
As far as I know.. The XZ don't have its own video call function. Like on the SG3. But still, I used Skype. Main reason is that it used mobile data, even if I was on WiFi. Also the mobile data did not affect my monthly plan, it just raised my bill.... Go for Skype or other app from googly play

+1 for hangout using the talk app on the xz. its been the most reliable video chat program for me.
Well, does anyone even tried (custom ROM, maybe?) to make video calling function work? Besides third party apps like Skype or Hangouts? I'd just want to call my GF or dad when they aren't available on those IMs.
Sorry for the new thread but I wasn't exactly getting any attention in the other threads where i asked for assistance.
Without earphones, skype calls work fine.
However, with earphones, the other party cannot hear me. I have tried the Echo test, which failed as well. But the echo test works without earphones. I can even record audio with the earphones but it doesn't work on skype. I have tried with two different earphones and yet the same result.
Do any of you guys have the same problem on 5.1.1? It was fine on 5.0.2.

Wow this is actually a huge issue. Maybe skype hasn't been updated to support 5.1.1 or something?
And no, i clean flashed too. Didn't make a difference. You will also notice that the mic stops working the moment you enable video on viber -_- i tried two different firmwares and still the same problem

I can confirm this too. After 5.1.1 update on Z3C, I went mute on facebook messenger voice calls with headset.
I did the Xperia mic diagnostics, that went OK with headset, tried the echo123 on Skype with headset = no sound, without headset using the device mic, it was OK.
I tried several combinations of noise canceling / mic sensitivity settings with no success.
Luckily regular phone calls work with headset.
I bought recently Sony STH-30 headset to be sure it will work with Xperia phone.
UPDATE: I found a workaround, connecting headset AFTER establishing a call.
Please, confirm anyone if it works for you, thx
