you might confuse the poor guy with the actual zooming in the default camera app. abd_alazeez2002 meant the Camera Zoom FX app, which allows you to map hardware buttons (except for the power button) to camera functions.
I have the Vol down button as my shutter.

Is there a camera app that allows that? I've tried Camera 360 and FX, no go on either that I could find.
Not sure why you would want to do that. The volume control zooms the camera. Do you want to eliminate that? I find it kind of handy.
I think he has a good point. Pressing the screen to make it snap a pic can cause shaking. Why not put zoom on screen and shutter on volume key? One side of volume should Start the focus and other shutter.

I never use the zoom, really. I'd rather that be on screen, especially since your not going to zoom the second oyu take the picture, like you do with the shutter.

That's brilliant! I like that focus idea.
Even the power button, if possible.

thats what I was thinking. The power button would be fantastic for taking the picture, and keep the volume up/down for zooming, etc
Yeah, someone really needs to make a camera app with the power button as the shutter.
Retro Camera is the only camera app that I've found so far that lets you "repurpose" a button to use for the shutter button. The camera is kinda slow and I don't think it takes normal pics but I like that I can use the volume up button for the shutter instead of tapping on screen. It makes it easier for me to take pics of myself haha.

Hello,
someone just gave me a nice idea: what about using the volume buttons to control the Camera App? pressing on the smartphone to take a picture can result ina lost of focus, and with that nice camera, it's a shame
if u dont rush for that, cm7's camera app is doing that, so wait for cm7
oh great I'm looking forward CM7, but will it be a porting or a native ROM?

It would be great if someone could mod the camera app to use power button as shutter button similar to how right shoulder button was used in the xperia play mod app allowing you to hold it to focus and release it to take a picture.

Already been talked about here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2141755&highlight=dedicated you will need root access but it can be done
Thanks - the other posts were slightly broader discussing lack of dedicated camera button, etc - I can live without a hardware button to launch camera up and very happy how zooming works with the volume rocker and would not want to lose that.
Also old camera mod app for xperia Play did not require root but xperia play mod used R trigger not power button so maybe you are right about root access.
I know power button can be used for ending calls in other xperia phones if enabled in accessibility menu - I wonder if the camera shutter option can be added in the similar fashion as an alternative to modding the stock camera app.

I hope so, I was a bit miffed when I found out their wasn't a camera button but it was the speaker....as this will be my first Sony device and most of their devices have had dedicated buttons....but I'm sure someone in XDA will bring out a mod
It should be a camera setting. Yes you'd lose digital zoom but that's fine for me as I'd never use digital zoom anyway.
The positioning of the volume keys would make it ideal and vastly improve the camera thanks to the shortsighted decision not to add a camera button (and thus lose the quick launch feature, which isn't possible to replicate just by having a camera icon on the lock screen).
When I went to take a picture yesterday I assumed that the button was to take a picture, was very disappointed when the screen just went black lol
Looks like this is going to be yet another phone that I am never going to take pictures with, I hate having to find the correct place on the screen to take a picture, once it has finally auto focused properly.

Or you can download and use CameraZoom FX.
I prefer the "Camera zoom FX" App over the stock camera, is there anyway to make the hardware button on the ZR launch it?
also, when "Camera zoom FX" is running, the hw button causes it to focus, but it doesn't actually take a photo.

The program itself must have this option. If not than its not possible to lounch it with the shutter button.
Hw button takes photos for me, its just take a sec longer.

Ah yes, I see you're right.
There's a slight difference in function, with the stock camera, tapping the h/w button focusses and take the picture,
with Camera Zoom FX you need to hold the h/w button down until the photo is taken.
Thanks.
Is it possible to have say the google camera launch instead of the sony camera when you press the camera button?

The Camera button seems to be tied to the "intelligent auto" mode.
Even when I press the shutter button while I'm in the Whatsapp Camera Mode, the Sony Camera App opens and the Whatsapp Camera Mode vanishes into background without taking a picture.
When phone is rooted, try freezing stock camera app and then try again while you have another app installed. That could work

On non root, simply decativate stock camera app . Install new one from playstore, and the button will open your new app. Sadly with a lockscreen you don't get a fast track to the cam, but you will have to unlock your device prime of shooting pictures.
