New BL + powered off USB charging = windows BSOD? - LG Optimus 2x

So two key events happened with my phone - the replacement battery I ordered finally arrived, and I also crawled out from under a rock and flashed the ICS partition and pengus77's CM10.
I was advised to calibrate the replacement battery by charging it from 0 to 100 with the phone powered off. So I streamed a random high res youtube video to drain the battery as fast as possible, then powered off the phone and plugged it into a USB port on my work laptop (a HP Elitebook running Windows 7 Enterprise x64).
The phone started charging (battery animation screen appeared) - and then my laptop started to install drivers. A few minutes later, I got a windows BSOD - yes the blue screen of death, not the black screen on android.
I initially thought something else caused the BSOD, so I left the phone plugged into my laptop and rebooted. As soon as my laptop got past the "starting windows" screen, it BSODed again. Didn't even get to the "Please wait..." screen.
Tried to reboot again - BSOD before getting to the "Please wait..." screen. Finally I suspected my phone was the culprit, so I unplugged it. Another reboot - it successfully got to the "Please wait..." screen, and then I plugged in the phone (still off), triggering a BSOD in under 10 seconds, before I could even get the field to input my password.
Rebooted with the phone plugged in but powered on this time, and my laptop fully booted all the way, no BSODs. But if I powered off the phone and plugged it in, BSOD! Looks like I'll have to wait till I get home to my AC charger before I can calibrate this battery
This is quite strange - I never had any problems like this on the old GB partition, if I were to plug in my phone to the laptop with the phone powered off.
Has anyone else experienced such an issue before? If it helps, my work laptop is a corporate machine so I don't have admin access over many of its functions (though I can still install and uninstall programs like normal), and it's loaded to the brim with corporate bloatware, and it's possible these properties contributed to the BSOD.

Charging(forming) new battery via usb is never recommended to be honest
Most usb device don't provide enough power or stable voltages like charger designed for our phone
I personally never liked charging via usb(most usb hub's dont work properly also if they need to provide current to hungry device(our phone example)..
I have no prob's with that options and also using custom battery 1700mah...
I have no sod's on win but have read that people had problems and sods sometimes with usb charging...
It's hard to pinpoint exactly where problem lies, could be your low power usb on motherboard crashing your win or something else..

Hmm that sounds likely. I'm back home anyways and will use my AC charger to condition the battery.
I remember that on the old CM10 nightlies (before the call bug was fixed), the USB charger always BSODed my phone...

... an easy solution would be to start using a real operating system on your computer instead of windows

Believe me, I do - I use Linux as my main OS on my home computer, and only boot into Windows for games
However this is a corporate laptop that doesn't actually belong to me and I can't meddle with it like that.

[Q] HP Touchpad Not Charging.

Hello guys,
I'm new here at the HP Touchpad Section and XDA-Dev Forums.
I am running CM7 on our HP Touchpad and my little brother has been fiddling with it(downloading many apps from the playstore using my personal account, thus forcing me to create a new google account/other shiz).
Then one time, the screen kept turning on and off without us even touching it. Our guess was it was dust on the screen which is being register as touch.
After a week or so that that was happening, the touchpad ran out of battery and was not charged right away.
The result, it won't charge anymore.
Is there anyway to open the device and shock the battery? It may be a dead battery just like what happened to my sister's iPhone.
I've also been reading some charging issues with CM7 and CM9 and tried some of their troubleshooting methods but non worked.
If I just get a little juice to boot it, I would reboot back to webOS as fast as I can and uninstall CM7.
Thanks in advance,
Raphael

Try leaving it on the stock charger for several hours, maybe days. If you have a touchstone, try that.
If you get it to charge (make sure it's fully charged), uninstall CM7 using acmeuninstaller, then boot into webos. If you have preware installed fine, if not install it and download 'remove android' (or something like that). Run it, then install either CM9 or cm10, using acmeinstaller3. There are several good how-to's which you can search for here or at webos nation forum.
When you have it installed, go to settings > storage and click on the 3 little squares on the upper right hand side, and click on usb computer connection. Then make sure the MTP box is checked.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thans for the reply chicle_11! Will try that on the weekends since I am very busy with school works. And thanks for the suggestion of installing CM9/CM10 but I will just stick to webOS and get an authentic Android Tablet(I'm choosing between Google Nexus 10 or Samsung Note 10.1).
I use webos at least 50% of the time. It's a shame that there aren't more apps compared to android. You don't have anything to lose by installing android. You'll have an excellent and unique dual boot tablet. CM10 is very stable now, I use it as my daily driver, I highly recommend it.

I still might reconsider flashing CM9/CM10 when I sort out the charging problems since I am just starting to save money for the Note 10.1/Nexus10.
Can you recommend a good CM10-based ROM for the HPTP or just the stock CM10 Jcsullins?
I use/recommend jcsullins' cm10.
Make sure MTP is checked (follow my first post) and that should take care of the charging problems.
Also, try to not let the battery run out of power. It could possibly brick the tablet.
It seems that I have somewhat sorted out the charging problems. I read an article last night that Samsung Chargers also work for the HPTP.
The process is fairly simple. Use the Samsung Charger first to charge a phone. After 2 hours or so, use that charger for the HPTP to charge the touchpad from a used/electrified wire. During the other process, use the HPTP Charger for the phone to power the cord up. After 10mins or so, switch both chargers. So the HPTP should be using the one that came with it by this time.
It worked for a while then the "Please use the charging cable that came blah blah blah to fully charge..." message came. I've read another article that the touchpad should be a little elevated or at least level with the cord so the cord will not fall down that is causing the message to pop up.
I've used both methods and the 2nd method is working like a charm. It shows a battery sign with a lightning bolt and the charging warning/message does not pop up. Will leave it overnight to see if it charges.
Then after, I might reinstall CM9(I've been from CM9 but downgraded to CM7 because of camera issues w/c my lil bro does not like).
So I left it overnight and it charged when I used the 2nd Method. Happy Days!

Sorry, That was late night here in the PHL and was a bit sleepy when I was posting that.
Also have dead touchpad
I haven't been able to see any life from my touchpad after the battery completely drained. Its been 2 days since I haven't been able to use it.
I've tried charging it via the cable and adapter that came with it for a couple of hours, left my TP on the touchstone all afternoon to morning and no life either, the touchpad however is a bit warm at the back. Does that indicate its charging?
my TP is sitting on the touchstone now but I've replaced the AC adapter and currently using my HTC Sensation plug, I am running out of ideas and I'm going to presume its completely dead.........
I've tried connecting it to the pc but nothing happens, Can someone help me out, I've also tried the button combinations "Home, Home+Power and Home+Power+VolumeUp"
I tried both of the methods mentioned a couple of posts ago with no success.
I have also left it on the regular AC charger for 48+ hours and a Samsung cell phone charger for another 48+ hours and nothing.
It is sitting on the Touchstone now for 36+ hours and nothing yet.
I sent HP an email and here is what they said to try:
"We gather from your mail that your Touchpad is unresponsive and will not turn on. To be able to help you with this issue please take note of the following troubleshooting steps:
First of all leave the device on charge with charger for 48 hours after do the following:
Press and hold the power button + Center for 15 seconds. The device may take a few minutes to restart.
Please do the above with the device connected to the charger. (not charging dock nor PC).
Press and hold the power button + volume Up + Center and continue holding for 5 seconds after the Full Erase screen appears.
Also please try the above steps with another USB cable, also please try to connect the USB to the computer with the touchpad, if the computer doesn't recognize the device, the USB cable is faulty.
Please try your charger on another device to see if this charges the device. As the issue could be that the AC adaptor that is not working.
Have you tried another charger with the Touchpad? In order to verify where is the problem. Regarding to your problem ,do you know if the problem is with the charger itself or with the USB cable? Have you tried the complete charger with another Device, phone?
If the steps given do not help you with this issue, please send us a Proof of Purchase (scan of store`s receipt attached to your response) to validate your warranty or the order creation date of your device and your address.
If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

None of that worked either. I just get the "Palm device" balloon on Windows XP when I hold the Power+Volume Up + Center button. It looks for drivers but never finds them.
Also try holding Home + Power button for 30 seconds instead of 15...This has been known to force some life back for some

Nothing after trying that and leaving it on the Touchstone for 48+ hours. Time to leave it plugged up to the computer for 48+ hours and see what happens.
Nothing after 48+ with the factory USB cable connected to a desktop computer.
It would be nice to see a solution that works every time instead of a bunch of guesses.

First my observations on three 32 GB TP's:
My discharge rate on WebOS in Airplane mode was arround -613 to -850mA. Screen on, (brightness affects this).
3. My discharge rate on CM10 in Airplane mode is about -520mA!!
4. A PC's USB port puts out 500mA's!!!
5. On the touchstone, (doesn't seem to matter if WiFi is on or off), with screen on 1/3 brightness + Battery Monito Widget = +853 to 945mA
6. On HP charger & cable, same as above = +1,377mA
What suprised me was the greater drain in WebOS.
You PC's USB port may be causing further discharge to the 2% TP's auto shut-off!
Actually none of these goofy button pressing and charging methods was right. A6 was faulty. It is fixed now.
My TouchPad is dead

My TouchPad discharged overnight and now just has a black screen. None of the button pressing or charging suggestions described in these forums has worked for me. I was just running webOS 3.0.5. No version of Android was on the TouchPad.
Please tell me the trick you used to revive your dead TouchPad. Was it just a problem with your Andriod OS?
Much thanks.

[Q] Connecting phone with dead battery to laptop caused BSOD

Running the latest CM10.1 my phone's battery was dead so I connected it via USB to my laptop (which was being powered by A/C) to charge it and about 10 seconds later my (Win7 x64) laptop had its first ever BSOD! So I restarted the laptop but it seemed to get stuck on the BIOS screen every time but then I unplugged the USB cable connecting the phone and the laptop then booted normally.
Anyone ever experience anything like this? Any idea what could have caused it? A driver issue maybe? Since this was my first ever BSOD I'd really like to know why it happened since I'm really paranoid about my laptop's health
Maybe a power surge do u have any other usb devices connected
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda premium
Is bsod means blue screen?

Is bsod means blue screen? If yes then it happens with me a lot of time. It is the driver problem. Uninstall all adb, fastboot and device specific driver and reinstall device specific driver only. Also shut your phone down and reinsert your phone's battery and boot it up. Then connect your device in charge only or any mode. USB Tethering caused me blue screen and CM 10.1 too. I hate CM.

[Q] [PLEASE HELP] HTC One M7 not charging when on.

Device: HTC One (M7) Stock ROM
A few days ago, my never rooted, stock firmware, no unlocked boot loader, no custom ROM, never dropped HTC One (M7)'s battery died. Plugging in the charger had no effect, absolutely NOTHING. Tried 6 different cables and 9 different locations to charge it, nothing. Waited a while, dying in desperation. Then after so much of panic, I plugged it again, and randomly it started charging. But the charging had a loop - showed a bright orange LED with the power symbol on a battery for about 5 seconds, then a dim orange LED with the green battery charging, and a number, for about 10 seconds. The loop kept repeating. Eventually I could turn it on till the (incredibly low capacity) battery could live. So I did about 10 resets to it, and the situation would not improve.
Since my phone just decided to do this to me just before a long journey of mine, I was quite upset, and eventually infuriated to the limits. I decided to take it along and try different things to it - tried, tried, cleaned the ports, searched the net, nothing.
One fine day it decided to break the loop - now it charged, but only when off.
And today again its started the loop.
And here I am, begging for some help. I'm starting to hate this device now. Please help me.. :crying:
P.S. : I played a lot of Clash of Clans on the phone - it heated up a lot. Hope the info helps (Possible corrupted overheating charge instructions of the phone, etc.)
please help i love this phone cant lose this at all

I am having the same exact problem right now. its very annoying. I have to drain the whole battery to charge it again. and its in that loop that you mentioned. plus it does not charge when you put it on charge when its on. it doesnt even have that charging light. it only charges itself if its off and if there is no battery left, i have to put it on charge by draining the whole battery by using apps and stuff and i am so pissed right now i cant find a solution to this. Did you find a solution on how to get this fixed?
I am currently having a similar problem where I can only charge my phone if off. Hopefully someone can help!

I have found a solution to this. I am really happy since i am able to use my phone again.
Let me state what exactly i was going through.
I had to use the phone till it actually turned off completely consuming the whole battery and it was very frustrating because i had to deliberately use the phone till the phone shuts down and charge it. And once it started charging, it has a weird stupid way of charging. It shows that its charging and it goes off, comes back on and shows its charging, then it goes off... When it goes off the red light goes away...then comes back on.
I've read other threads and forums about people having the same issue. Others say they're not even able to connect their phones to the computer. You all should try connecting your phone to a computer and check if its able to transfer data.
If that happens, then you're saved. Because this really worked out for me.
Now, i'm not really sure what kind of bug this is, but here's how you fix this.
If you're able to transfer data to your phone, you must browse your phone on the computer and copy a file (or a couple of files - in my case i transferred a movie folder that had a couple files in it)
And guess what..i put it on charge and started charging like normal oh my god i was happy as hell
Thanks. I hope the same works for you all, people have been saying you have to clean the charging port but not really

I'm not sure how are you NOT able to get it connected to your computer. Since i connected it to the computer, it didn't start charging but it allowed me to transfer files. And so i did. You might wanna change the cable and check if its letting you connect to your PC.
So far its working perfectly alright. I don't have a problem as such. And wait, you could install a file manager and move a couple files around. Maybe delete some files or download some files and try.
I Hope it works for everyone who's getting this problem. I know its not a hardware problem and HTC support sucks BIG time. i don't even have htc headquarters so i couldn't get it replaced, bad. but if your phone is under warranty you must get it replaced

Hi! so you are saying that if i move some files from the computer to the phone it might get fixed? Well, i cant plug it to the computer, it just doesnt recognize the phone, if i plug it when the phone is on the pc doesnt show anything and the phone doesnt charge or anything, just like when trying to charge it with the ac charger, if i plug it with to the pc with the phone off then it shows a message that doesnt recognize the device, and the phone doesnt even charge aswell...
Right now the only fix i have found is to solve the problem of having to drain the battery in order to charge the phone, now i fixed it unticking the fastboot option in energy, now i can charge with any % but the phone must be off. Btw it gets a lot of heat while charging it this way... idk if its normal, i heard that because the aliminium case it gets more heat than normal plastic cases.
Thanks for your reply, ill try to connect the phone to the pc a few more times.
Hello guys , , I have the same problem , charging the M7 (On stock rom), I have tried many things ,roms and kernels , currently I managed to make it charge with the screen on with some conditions..
I installed SLIM ROM from their site (4.4.4) . To charge the phone with screen on I have to check "screen on while charging" (because if the screen goes off it stops charging /same thing if somebody is calling me )
To Charge my phone I just need to Reboot normally and charge it ( if you install this rom Activate the sound for the ac plug/unplug so you can know if it is charging well or not )
Eaven if i have to do these things its better then the OFF mode .
Hope It helps .
HTC M7 Only charges when it's off and the laptop can't recognize the device.
Hello, I've had this HTC M7 since last year. It's worked perfectly until a couple days ago.
The phone will not charge when it's on. It only charges when it's off. Also, my laptop won't recognize the device. I've tried with a couple different AC chargers, but no luck.
Sometimes my phone says "CAN'T CHARGE WHILE IN USB HOST MODE," and I don't know how to take it out of USB Host mode? I'm guessing this is a problem with the software. Before this happened the phone worked flawlessly.
Any help, please??!!

It can sometimes be caused by a defective usb port on the phone, does your port looks damaged? Boot your phone in safe mode and check if its doing the same thing.
I've already done that and it doesn't work.
I really don't know what the issue is? I mean this is a perfectly working unlocked HTC M7.
I've turned if off multiple times and even wiped it clean twice. I don't know what else it could be.
I mean it's been working perfectly since I got it.
But as I mentioned earlier it will only charge while the phone is off. And my laptop can't recognized it either.
It only appears and "Unknown Device."
But even when it is off it charges for a bit and then it completely stops.
Then you see the battery logo and then it starts charging again. But it repeat that same process throughout the whole time. So, it can never reach to 100%.
As I've mentioned before I've never really had this problem.
I've been looking for hours on the internet and so far nothing seems to work. There was an app I saw on to access engineer mode or something, but for some reason I can't use that app because it says that I'm missing another application.
Any thoughts??

I have the same problem, it can't charge, PC don't recognize when the phone is on android, but when i boot into recovery everything work fine (charge or data move to PC), so far i could't find any way better.
Hi,
had same problem.
Clearing system cache helped in my case.
Related cause for the trouble seem to be a couple of OTA upgrades I did recently.
(I was on a pretty old version.)
I noticed that there was something wrong while upgrading.
Even though the phone was connected to the charger while the whole upgrade process,
battery level went down...
The following procedure is your own risk!
Be careful not to choose any options that wipe all your data or factory reset your device.
This is how I cleared the system cache :
Boot into recovery (hold both volume-down and power buttons for ~30 seconds until menu shows - )
Press volume-down to choose RECOVERY and press power button.
Be patient ~60 seconds until menu appears.
Choose wipe cache partition and press power button.
Choose reboot system and press power button.
I hope this helps you.
Thanks

Tablet won't charge when on (android and Windows)

Hi everyone! Today a very strange thing happened... I was using my tablet with Windows, with a usb hub attached to use a simple mouse. This hub has a micro usb output, so that I can charge the tablet while plugging in usb devices (that's exactly the one techtablets uses in one of his videos about this tablet). All of a sudden it stopped charging, so I tried rebooting: NOTHING. Then I switched to Android, but still no luck!
I'm happy I see that it charges if it's completely off, but I don't think it's normal!
What do you suggest me? This tablet is fundamental for me, as I study with it!
Anyone who could kindly help?
Same here and notice this after your post here. Windows notice that i plug in the charger (screen brightness was different with pluged in charger) but doenst charge.
I'm thinking that it might be BIOS related... Unfortunately I can't update it (I have 2.02 version already), or at least sort of reflashing it, cause I don't have a usb keyboard... Can you make a try? Cause it's weird it happens on both Windows and Android! I also noticed that if I have it off, charging, right when I trigger the power button and the teclast logo appears, right before the choice of the OS, it stops charging..
i have same problem, do you resolve it for present? how do you use your tablet?
Mine was a bit temperamental and as described above for the 1st 6 months but now it will not charge even when off unless it is left for days. Then no where near full charge.
I had very similar problem on my old teclast c6j6 tablet a year ago .
It seems my usb connector in tablet was too loose after few months .
I opened and pressed ( squeezed ) usb connector and was work again fine .
For the time being I connect and disconnect usb cable very gentle on all my teclast tablet and is fine .
I have the same problem. The tablet will not charge while powered on and starts charging right away as soon as it powers off. I do not have to wiggle the cable or anything. ON = not charging, OFF = charging. It's very unlikely that this is caused by a bad connector.
Be careful when you use Android. If Android shuts down because the battery is low, the tablet will start as soon as you connect a power cable. The tablet starts up, stops charging because of this, shuts down because the battery is low, starts charging as soon as the tablet is powered down, starts up, stops charging, shuts down, starts charging, starts up, stops charging and s on. Viola: you have a boot loop.
I wrote about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/x98-air/help/dead-battery-bootloop-t3243993
There is a fix which requires some soldering. This is a YouTube video which describes the procedure:

Windows 10 stability issues on X98 Air

I am experiencing some stability issues on Windows 10. Sometimes the system randomly freezes (screen stays on, but no reaction until hard power off) or does not wake up, while being charged with Windows running. Other times the system runs perfectly for hours. I am not experiencing any problems under load.
My problems are not load related, and I have disabled the fast boot option in energy management. As there is no blue screen, I cannot find any info on what is causing it. It is a clean install. Except the two drivers for the cameras, all drivers are signed and either downloaded from Windows Update or gathered by scanning the Win 10 driver folder that has been uploaded on this and the techtablet forums. The graphics driver has been updated with the most recent Intel version.
What are your experiences with Windows? Anyone experienced something similar or is there a known faulty driver?
Other things I tried:
Error check on drive
sfc /scannow
Windows and this tablet have some problems... my experience http://forum.xda-developers.com/x98...-2048x1536-t2913035/post63550338#post63550338
They also occur when idle, when using the tablet everything is fine, problems are not easily reproducable and I did not find anything valuable in the event log, so i gave up and live with it.
I reinstalled windows, tried different bios versions, drivers... energy options, nearly everything I could think of^^
Wasted a lot of time, I now hard power it off instead of letting it "sleep" or whatever it does, I guess some driver is faulty with the windows deep sleep aka "connected standby".
I narrowed it down a bit. I kept looking for driver updates via Windows Update and examining the different powercfg reports. (my thought was, if the driver or app misbehaves in connected standby, it is not good). Now the system seems stable on battery power and connected standby seems to work as expected.
I do have problems while connected to the charger. The device will not wake up after a longer time if it goes to sleep while charging. I also noticed that the sound driver seems to alter its behavior when power is connected, so testing now with volume=0. (some well known problem with the audio driver on other tablets)
My fresh install of win 10 (1511) just slept to death again. This time there was an entry in event log. LockApp.exe crashed after waking up, so silly, eventlog is full of errors that shouldn't be there on a fresh install.
One question, does shutdown work for you (win or android)? Mine seems to power off, but it isn't really off. Drains battery and before you can turn it on again you have to hard power off (even though it looks like it is off).
Positive thing about fresh install of win 10 (1511) is that wlan works out of the box, also some more drivers are downloaded automatically (but seems not the ones that cause problems^^).

I did not switch it off often enough to reach any conclusions. Seen it fail when shutting down from Windows several times, from Android things seem pretty stable. To test, I attach an USB lamp to the OTG adaptor. When the tablet shuts down it turns off USB power and the lamp turns off.
