Upgrading to v20a question - LG Optimus 4X HD

So seeing as to how the jellybean discussion thread exploded over the last few days it's been very hard to follow what's been going on. Also, I know I'm not the only one with this question so he goes.
1) How do I upgrade from regular stock ics to jellybean v20a? I have v10d and I have cwm installed+ root if that matters. My phone firmware is from Taiwan as well.
2) After installing jellybean, how do I unlock the bootloader and root my 4x?

1. I am currently on Gingerbread bootloader. What is the easiest way to go to ICS bootloader?
2. Is there any Jelly Bean ROM which has working HDMI?

1. Read instructions carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975274 use this tool to flash new bootloader.
2. Not sure, but I've not heard anyone complaining that it wasn't working.
3. If you've had a look around the dev section, you'll see that there are now several CM10/.1 roms working with the new bootloader, with less problems apparently.
- if you choose to use CM10/.1 roms on new bootloader you'll have to follow these instructions to make the recovery compatible with CM10 based roms (without this special recovery CM10 roms will freeze on boot) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2058231
I woud say the easiest way to get the ICS Bootloader is through the AIO Toolkit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
The toolkit guides you through each step.
Hope this helps!

Yeah, choose option 4 - Change Partitions from OLD to NEW layout
and then don't forget to flash an ICS bootloader recovery (but I think the toolkit tells you about that)
And if your sd card is unmountable just flash the file IntSD-Mount-Fix.zip available somewhere on the toolkit.
Then just flash a ROM for ICS bootloader from recovery as usual !

[Q] LG-P880G (Canada | Wind Mobile) Update V10F

As of 14 Jan 2013, the current version of the Canadian firmware has gone from V10C to V10F. I have no info on new benchmarks (if any), but I can confirm that V10F wipes out #ROOT / Super User access, and cannot be re-rooted (as far as I can tell) via:
qaz753's method
Root MANY ANDROID! method
.kdz rollback combined with either of the above.
It's entirely possible that I'm experiencing this because I'm a n00b, but I have attempted all three, all after hard-reset, without any success.
Quaz753's falls flat early on, when IS11LG_SystemBackupTest.signed.apk installs, but crashes at startup.
RMA method "fails to mount" in cmd and asks "are you [ROOT]?
And you can't roll back the firmware: when attempting, the device freezes on a black or grey screen, but behaves completely normally as if nothing had happened after a reboot.
So, now, are others experiencing this?
Has anybody gotten further than me with the aforementioned methods after the updates?
Or do I just wait until someone smarter than me writes a new rooting tool?
Any updates on that?
EDIT: Yup. N00b here. I was forgetting to replace the battery when the firmware downgrade began. That fixed the rollback to 10C, and then "Root Many Android" worked just fine
*** See my post below for the step-by-step for upgrading to V10F with #Root. ***
EDIT 2: Here is a new link to V10C Firmware: Dropbox
Like you, ive flashed to the new firmware and both rooting methods youve mentioned has failed. I have reverted back to v10c to get root back, getting a little tired of this phone.

Have you tried doing a FOTA with OTA Rootkeeper and temp-unroot? For me I could always do that, and root was restored once the firmware upgrade process was finished.

Can you (or anyone else) please confirm that you followed the following steps:
Obtain #Root on your LG P880G Phone, Firmware V10C using either of the methods above
Install "Voodoo OTA RootKeeper" (Sorry, too new to the forums to be allowed to post a link to the PLAY store)
Run RootKeeper, and click "Protect Root"
Still in Rootkeeper, click "Temp. un-root"
Run update via LG's stock "Software Update" app, upgrading to firmware V10F (FOTA: Firmware Over-the-Air)
click 're-root' in RootKeeper
So that you are now running V10F with #Root and all is well?
I don't want to be the guinea-pig for this, just because my wife will yell at me if I get caught doing another factory reset
Thanks!
EDIT: This method is confirmed as working. See my post below for the step-by-step for upgrading to V10F with #Root.

Sorry, I forgot to write that I don't have a P880G, but a normal (german) one. But why do another factory reset? KDZ flash doesn't delete your data. With FOTA I mean "normal" firmware-over-the-air, with the integrated Software update app, without a computer or cable. That has never changed any data on my phone. I had to restore all the system applications bacuse it complained at first, but after restoring them and temp-unroot everything went fine and root was kept. But as said this is only tested for nomal P880. Can't tell if your G version uses some other methods which wipe away root. IF that's the case, I unfortunately can't help you.

If I wasn't clear before, I hope I can be now: I regained #Root after the Canadian (Wind Mobile) firmware update to V10F, but I had to use the crudest means possible. I am not an expert, but here is the recipe I used:
Section A
Back up EVERYTHING: contacts, app data, media, etc., and read all directions to the end before you begin any step.
Download the .kdz for V10C (If that doesn't work, here's another link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nuccg8hu4p1495l/V10C_00.kdz)
Manually roll back your firmware using THIS METHOD (following each step very carefully, eg. replacing the battery during rewrite).
Obtain #Root using THIS METHOD.
The finished product: I am now back to firmware V10C, with #Root ...just like before you blindly allowed the FOTA (Firmware Over-the-Air) update V10F. What, were you hoping it was gonna be JellyBean? Now, for the update:
Section B
Ensure you have #Root on your LG P880G Phone with Firmware V10C using the above steps
Install "Voodoo OTA RootKeeper" (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper)
Run RootKeeper, and click "Protect Root"
Still in Rootkeeper, click "Temp. un-root"
Run update via LG's stock "Software Update" FOTA (Firmware Over-the-Air) app, upgrading to firmware V10F. Do not use the LG Desktop App.
RootKeeper automatically re-enables #Root
The finished product: I am now upgraded to firmware V10F, with #Root.
Thanks to muellersmattes for proposing the method in Section B, and to tnsantos, thanson, and laskaca for confirming this method.

Root P880G 10F
As mentioned before tested with Idea to use Root Keeper. This was the brightest idea , so
1. Downgraded my P880G to original 10C software using KDZ.
2. Rooted with Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry version from 13.09.2012
3. Used Root Keeper to backup root
4. Used Root Keeper to temporary unroot the phone
5. Updated phone to 10F by lg update app
5. Restored root backup in Root Keeper
6. Root access is working perfectly fine on 10F firmware
I would like to say BIG THANK YOU to muellersmattes for this idea.

Maybe because I downgrade to V10A... its the only reason I can see.

2) Accept OTA update.
3) Root somehow preserved without using rootkeeper at all.

Might need to confirm but I remember that on the arc to root you had to downgrade the kernel, root then re flash updated ed kernel
Needs to be confirmed first

My suggestion to preserve root is simple
Download the update.(just d update from the existing firmware)
Creating a .zip file
Modding it so that we don't lose root
Flash that zip through cwm so that we can enjoy updates widout losing root or trying to find new ways of rooting new firmware..

Madhouse was talking about Locked Bootloader phones, everybody knows how to root any firmware with an unlocked bootloader.
In the Xperia ARC, the procedure was to flash the newest firmware (not-rootable), then flash a previous kernel only (rootable) with flashtool, turn on phone, root it using any exploit available, turn it off, and flash the newest kernel alone with flashtool. Phone rooted and in the latest version.
I don't know, but maybe this method could work as this new firmware is still based on Android 4.1 just like the previous one, so the older, exploiteable, kernel should be able to boot the new firmware.

AGAIN, this is only possible on unlocked bootloaders. With locked bootloaders, once you update to 10.1.1.A.1.253, you loose root and recovery, so there is no way to do what you are saying. Once updated to .253, the only way to change kernel is via flashtool.

Root for 4.3

when you think that it could be possible to root our Xperia T with 4.3 update?:fingers-crossed:
Downgrade to 4.1, root, upgrade with root to 4.3, this is the best way currently.
I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get a direct root method for 4.3 since we can do what I said above

That's the method if bootloader is unlocked, there's a few of us not willing to unlock it yet.
Use flashtool to roll back to 4.1.2, doomlord's rooting technique for rooting that firmware, jump to the development forum to grab the touch recovery by peetr, and then use darklord's deodexed stuff to get rooted 295 - did it today and the steps are relatively well mapped out for you - I can vouch that it works for locked bootloaders on stock firmware :good:

What, rooting fresh installed 4.3, not flashing 4.3 custom rom?
I have locked bootloader, I only went back to 4.1.2 with flashtools, then installed root and CWM, after that flashed Dark Lord's 4.3 stock (the Bond one) and the SuperSU zip in recovery.
Everything running correctly.
Somebody will try to root it once the Z2 is launched: you can't downgrade that, but if a working root exploit is found it will probably also work on previous xperias.

with 4.1.2 i have root and how all we know with original update the root permission were lost.i don't want to unlock again my bootloader.i prefer that it will be locked, for keep it most possible original, because i like the sony software.i want the root only for xposed and his modules.

Rooting

I have latest official firmware JB 4.3(12.1.A.0.266).
Now i want to root it.
Is there any way.
Thanks
Yes there is. However you need to unlock your bootloader for this.
Tutorial for Bootloader unlocking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2354721
Tutorial for Rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646193
However for unlocking bootloader you need to create a backup of the TA partition and this requires root.
So there is an loop in this issue.......
What some users do:
- Downgrade back to 4.1.2 (see my tutorial about Flashing with Flashtool)
- Root it
- Backup TA
- Unlock bootloader/Install CWM
- Install custom 4.3 rom with root

Those who do not want to unlock bootloader are waiting for @DooMLoRD to release an exploit for official firmware JB 4.3(12.1.A.0.266).
I am one of them.
