Will I need a powered Y cable to use a usb keyboard in OTG mode with CM10 on the original Galaxy Tab 7 ?
Are there any particular usb keyboards that are power thrifty enough to work without extra power?
Thanks for any ideas!
No. You only need the otg cable to connect any usb device. The keyboard is powered by your Galaxy Tab. I ordered one myself on ebay but I don't like it, I'm always afraid to damage the otg connection of my gt2. I ordered a bluetooth keyboard instead, completly wireless. The otg cable is only 2 dollars on ebay.

Thanks for the reply theriado but the original Galaxy Tab does not supply full power to the usb port like the Tab 2 does.
In fact the otg drivers were never official unlike the GT2 someone hacked them together.
In any case I will find out maybe this weekend if my cable ever arrives.
I was hoping there was also a hack to turn on otg without an adapter like some devices can do but no-one has ever replied about that one either.

Where is this at for the tab. Has anyone found it yet. I dont know if maybe froyo does not support the usb host mode needed or what. I saw that it was comming and yet cannot seem to find it. It was supposed to plug into the data port on the tab and give you the ability to attatch regular usb peripherals.
Any info is greatly appreciated

FWIW I saw a USB dock at Home Plus (Tesco for you guys in the UK) the other day for 29,000 KRW. Although I can't be sure, it appeared to be just a USB only dock but it looked like the HDMI dock recently reviewed on here.

you should try out the Elan Mobidapter, it's a micro SD to USB adapter with integrated USB Host. i'm using the Mobidapter often and im happy with it, but you can only use USB Storages with it. No keyboard support.
BTW: Android itself doesn't have or support an USB Host.

That's not entirely true. Most android builds don't have the necessary usb host support as part of the kernel, but there's nothing to prevent someone from compiling it or adding it in as a module. The Tab is/was supposed to do this OOTB, and based on the pinout information posted elsewhere, there is at least kernel support for determining if host mode should be enabled. With a modified iPod connector from Sparkfun I was able to get the Tab's AccessoryManager process (I think that's what it was called) to see a non-supported device plugged in (externally-powered USB hard drive enclosure), even if it couldn't enumerate it. It could be because I didn't connect the requisite +5V for downstream devices, or because there is no usb_storage module available. More testing needs to be done on this before we write it off completely. Hopefully Samsung will just release their solution(s) sooner than later.
That is what I wish they would do. But im afraid with the tab10.1 it may be put on the back burner

How did you modify the ipod connector? I have a few ipod/iphone cables lying around but they seem backwards compared to the sgt connector and difficult to modify.
I'm thinking about buying some sgt connectors or cables from china to play with.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Unfortunately I could not find a supplier of the "mirrored" iPod connectors that the SGT uses. I contacted many China-based component mfgs and none could point me in the right direction for that stupid dock connector. So I got the iPod one from SparkFun, used an xacto knife and small file to grind off the material on either side of the connector that keys it into the mating iPod connector. This allows you to invert it and plug it into the SGT, which then gives you access to all 30 pins. The cheap charging/sync cables that you can get from ebay and the likes only come with 5-7 pins connected, and the rest missing.

you know what sucks? I had a $100 haipad that had a microusb jack and came with a 6" adapter cable. guess what? you could plug in usb sticks, a usb mouse, or a usb keyboard. worked perfectly. mouse had a pointer, keyboard worked without a popup, it was all quite magical.
that was on a 2.1 resistive touchscreen chinese tablet.
why the hell can't the tab to this?
I have everything planed out for my tab install for my Dodge Magnum. But since the Nexus 7 doesnt have a sd slot I need to find a cable that can charge the tablet and use my flash drive at same time.
My flash drive(Usb on dash, so its easily removable)

I would love host cable with 2 usb inputs but cant seem to find it and dont know if its even possible.
Any help would be appreciated.
I found this on the bay : item # 140839631580 (Can't post link I'm too new... I was a lurker for a while -_-)
i didn't think the N7 could support power and OTG
You want it for video or audio? You could try a wifi solution for audio. Or be the guy that gets the pins to work.
there is NO data and charge at the same time. This is due to how the device switches from charge to usb mode thru the pin 4 . it senses rather a data cable or charge cable is being used . will not charge via otg..
there are several threads with experiments trying to get this work .You could use a wifi or bluethooth drive for data...
I have no clue what im doing but this is what im playing with at the moment. Its a old dock for sgs2 i believe but it has a dc and usb input on the back of it.
Im about to this because i have very little patience for china.

Would get the cheaper one but the juiced one has a flexible cable vs the fixed usb on the other one. Would this be pointless though?
Unfortunately OTG sends ground up the sense pin to trigger host mode. Once activated it sends 5V DOWN the USB cable to power your USB devices. Trying to send voltage up the cable at the same time to the Nexus would not be a good idea. The only way around it I can think of would be to hack the firmware to only activate the data pins in host mode and keep the power circuit seperate, then you could power the USB device from a modified dock/hub which sends power up the USB cable to the device.
A lot of work, and without the powered hub, OTG would be useless!
In the long run wouldn't it be easier to just plug in the power lead when needed and have the otg in the rest of the time? (or vice versa). It would mean you having to have easy access to the usb port but I can't see an easy non technical solution to connecting both at once.
Don't use the Nexus 7 for a car install. You can get an Acer Iconia A100 with a full-size USB port to connect to whatever external storage solution you want, and it's usually about the same price or cheaper than the Nexus 7.

Would it be possible to charge while using an OTG Cable for Keyboard/Mouse or does the same principle apply as inn data via OTG & charge?

Same principle. In normal OTG host mode the tablet powers the peripherals. A USB keyboard/mouse will be no exception to that.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but was wondering if you ever ended up getting that Juiced systems adapter and if it worked well with the N7. Been looking at it but haven't found any success stories on XDA with the N7, just the few Amazon reviews...
That cable would work but u need specific kernel tweaks for otg + charge to work. Pm me if anyone needs it.

Ofcourse there is charge and otg at the same time by just simply shorting pins 4 and 5 with a resistor,in my case for xperia p , a 100k resistor does it.
Timurs USB ROM from another site is what you want. Has links and everything you need.
I was going to do a car install as well but after sourceing parts and work estimates ( I want clean install, like stock) just more hassle than its worth for me. Please post pics if you get an install going.

Hi team,
I just bought an HDMI cable to connect by phone to the TV. The problem is that the cable just wont fit in to Note1. However, it works perfectly fine with Note 2.
I can use the same charger to charge my Note 1 and Note 2. But the HDMI cable port just wont fit inside Note 1 as if its not meant for it. I tried to push it but it refuses to connect.
AFAIK, HDMI cables are universal and can be used on any phones which supports this feature. I may be wrong.
Any ideas what is causing this issue?

Don't know how it looks on Note 2, but all Note 1 has is USB port into which fits only USB.
Sending screen to other devices is done with MHL converter, which has USB plug which goes to Note, USB port for external power and HDMI port for connecting to TV. I'm sure more info can be found in accessories forum.
PS. I have a vague feeling that questions should generally be posted in Q&A forum...

The man is bang on, there's no hdmi port on any phone AFAIK... Mhl ports vary pins on generation of phone, so the note2 matches the s3 and I think the s2 matches the note, but it usually states on the product page which models they fit.

Hi there, It looks like a Y shaped cable. One end goes into the phone (charger port) and on the other side, there are 2 wires (ports), one goes into the HDMI port on the TV and the other goes into the USB port on the TV. The USB port does the job of charging the phone simultaneously while the HDMI does the job of extending the screen from phone to TV. There is no MHL adapter. The cable does all the job.
On the package, it says for Galaxy S3 so I guess it will work only with S3 and Note 2. I need to buy one more which is compatible with S2 and Note1.
My only question is that since the charging port on Note1 and Note2 is similar, how come there is still a compatibility issue with Note1? I was under the impression that the cable/port would be standard for these Samsung android phones and if it fits into Note2, then why note on Note1?
That's called an mhl adapter. The port in the phone is micro usb, so the signal is converted to hdmi.

I know the KFHD7 can't power things plugged into the micro USB but assuming a USB hub or power from another source just having the data cable plug into it should work, right? I've tried a USB2 HDD and USB wireless mouse/keyboard and they don't work though, although they do on my Samsung Galaxy S3 using same apps to mount in case of the USB2 HDD.
If this is possible what am I missing to make it work?

i m going to explain you why you cant use them (i bought a keyboard) amazon disabled usb otg in the kernel. i said amazon to turn it on. i contacted them 2 times, and nothing. i think, we have to contact them to enable it (all forum users) or pay me 35 dollars for a bluetooth keyboard!

Damn, lack of USB OTG support is a real shame, I was hoping to use the KFHD7 as a portable media centre/laptop replacement but it might be impossible by the sound of it.
One thing i forgot to mention is that my KFHD7 is modified with TWRP and CM 10.1, runs really smooth compared to the stock software. But is USB OTG stillnot possible like it was on the original Kindle Fire? Seeing as this newer one uses a second bootloader and all.

possible, but hashcode prefer to fix all bugs and then add it
Hello all. Planning to get a MHL 2.0 cable for my note 3 but I also want to hook up a keyboard and mouse. I have a logitech k/b that uses wireless signal via a USB dongle. I figured the OTG cable would suffice but naturally once the MHL cable is in, there is no way to also use the OTG cable. Curious if there is some sort of hub that allows at least 1x micro usb and 1x full size usb, or some sort of splitter? I realize a bluetooth keyboard and mouse is probably another solution but would prefer to avoid if I could.
Thanks!
In other words, you want to make your phone a desktop computer?
yeh basically. Easier to work while on my lunch break. Thanks
Yes.
I made a pretty ghetto setup but it works.
What you will need is an OTG cable
A stand
And a powered USB hub
Mine is home made, but I believe they have this options made into a dock for this phone.

After my post I came across the Samsung Smart Dock, which looks to do what Im trying to accomplish. May invest in that, a little pricey though
As for the idea above, I still need to have a Micro USB for the MHL right? Or can I get an adapter to do USB to Micro USB to make it work?
You need an 11 pin adapter for MHL. Samsung and rocket fish sell the correct equipment.
