Solved 30% battery drainage overnight! - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok,i have had this phone for 2 months now and i was quiet satisfied with the battery since i'm not a heavy user...was getting easily 2 days of moderate usage...
Overnight(6-8hours) my phone was draining only between 3-5% , but since 5 days ago its draining over 30%...last night i left it on 87% and this morning when i woke up it was at 54%...its giving me a big headache since i didnt change my average usage in the last 5 days to get this dramatically change in battery....
So,im asking a help...i did 3 things in past 5 days and maybe some of them could be the problem,so here it goes:
1.i installed Dropbox app and downloaded some music(mp3),books(pdf) and a movie through that app(i disabled the auto-upload and on application manager i dont see this app running at all)
2.i started to make a google wallet account to buy some apps, but in midway i cancelled it since i didnt wanted to add my working credit card in case of theft...im going to get another visa card just for google with limited funds
3.maybe those pdf books from my PC could be infected with virus??
I'm desperate to get it back what it used to be so any suggestions would be really appreciated...And last 2 days i have cut down the data usage to zero, dont use 3g or edge nor the wifi at all just to be sure its not from them...
One thing i noticed today is that in the settings>battery the Android OS has spiked to 42% of usage and it used to be 20-22%
Thank you

Root and instal benzrom v3

30% over night sounds like it doesn't go to deepsleep at all..
Try install betterbatterystats and see if you can see whats going on.
Some of the features require root, but most important features should work.

Ok,after uninstalling Dropbox and rebooting, my phone seems to come back to normal...after i woke up this morning(8 hours of sleep),my phone has drained only 4%,so i guess that app was keeping my phone awake...
strange though, that app has over 50milion downloads and i didnt see anyone to mention battery drainage...i also disabled the auto-upload function, force stopped the app (he wasnt showing in the running apps under application manager).so dont understand why he was working on the backround...
anyways seem ok now, battery back to normal...now if i can only find where is the option to make this thread into "Solved"

Another battery moaning thread

I have read a load of threads relating to the battery life, but this is slightly different. I'm on jm1 official and have been for weeks, its was fine until a day ago, now I'm sitting at work, watching the battery percentage go down everytime i look at it, I'm now talking about now when I'm using 3g, just when phones idle.
I went to sleep last night and unplugged phone before I did, fully charged. Woke up and it was on 94%....
Really my question is, is there any way to find out what's using all my battery apart from the built in function which seems to only refresh every hour! I'm not looking for juice defender or such apps

Spare parts can give you, sometimes, some rough approximations. Really, if you started experiencing issues one day, you should try to remember what you downloaded most recently, it might be poorly coded and you should look to replace it with competing software.
Also, there are somethings you wouldn't want to intentionally or unintentionally leave running in the background. Use task manager (not ATK cuz it doesn't track "running" processes very well unless they've updated) to find out if anything is running. Even the marketplace will run in the background and not let your phone properly sleep.
Also, 6 percent seems about right. 2% for all services and 3g off, 6% for 3g? I'll have to look into it when I'm not on my phone. Especially if you dress your batteries by running them down to 0s%, this is bad to do to li-on batteries, I don't know how long it takes to feel the effects but short cycles are better for the batteries health.
Ok, 3g is never on at my house I can't get it there anyway.
The only reason I run it down to 0% is because I'm using my phone and it doesn't last, its stupid to say use it in low cycles because then I'm really only getting 20% battery life anyway...
I have advanced task manager but don't really use it from what ive read I shouldn't have to. And I had thought about the recent apps I've installed and I have installed nothing much new apart from angry birds
Just not happy with the noticeable change in the space of a few days.

If consumers keep "living" with things then they deserve the crap they get. As a consumer, you have the right to be heard so make sure the people you're giving your hard earned cash to is taking your feedback and providing products and services for YOUR needs, not the company's needs.
I'm loosing 10% every night too. It's a joke and I'm hoping the updates will improve it somewhat.

ye i know. but funny thing is, it's rather random. with the same settings and nothing changed at all. sometimes overnight, it drops close to none. and some nights, it drops 10%.
i've lost 10% over 4 hours today with no usage (idle) so lol. i'm glad i'm at least getting 2 days worth of usage.
let's hope this famous froyo does something. sometime soon...
Make sure all applications are dead (ie. use samsung task manager).
Turn off apn (so that you can guarantee no apps are using data).
If you do those two things, I'm sure you won't lose more than 5% overnight.
Personally, if I do that, I don't lose more than 1% overnight.
maybe it's due to over-flashing and all. de-calibrates the battery or whatever. either way, meh.
i've probably only got this calender widget refreshing itself every 12 hours to update the day's events and my Google account on active sync. maybe some applications screwing up somewhere.
to point out, a fresh flash always gave me no problems with battery draining. (after "re-calibrating")
just updated my phone to the TEST firmware JPJG8 which is currently the latest one available thru kies which includes arabic, and have seen no changes from the original firmware the phone came with ( Originally bought from Abu Dhabi with whatever firmware that had the android market not being available )
toying with juice defender for 2-3 days my SGS laged like hell even with the RyanZ lag fix OCLF from the market and it said that i saved 1.5% more juice tho i didnt see any diff with batt, it still drained fast (full charge overnight + extra charge with phone off on my way from home to work and starting @ 100% once leaving my car and ending @ 30-20% in the afternoon about 4-5pm, need to charge a little more if i wanted it to last till 10pm T_T )
deleted it today and thought why not simply use the extended control widgets to disable the connection when the screen was off + switch off the auto sync, like how the program did but manually and amazingly batt life felt like a big nasty battery i felt the diff immediatly.
kept the program juice plotter to see how steep the batt was used to compare the results.
1. keeping my phone on 2g almost all the time except for when i need to browse the net/use msn on phone - i do use facebook/twit and i might be missing the fast notifications but 2g is good with those 2 and battery life sure is extended as i can see.
2. closing the apn when locking the phone and bringing it up when screen is on is a great idea and u can almost instantly tell ur battery life is better
3. keeping screen off as much as possible helped my batt too tho i dont like it but it works.
really noticed a diff in battery usage today so im currently backing up the phone and after a fresh format/restore session will apply root and OCLF and keep you all posted on how long the battery lasts using this method
will test for 2-3 days before reporting again.
Current Battery stat killers are
1.loads of calls
2.display due to a large amount of sms's
see you again after my test in a couple of days
I don't think jg8's a test though unless it's a new rev by kies. used it a month back, pretty awesome but I've switched.
heading to bed now, shall see what happens tonight! such adventure and excitement every night.

jg8 isn't a new rev, it was out for a while and cant be found without using the ctrl+alt+u+p (and if that = test then its not an official release) at the firmware update in kies, its a middle east version with arabic support.
ok impressions on how things went.......
voice calls = 49% with 1H 13M 23Sec
Display = 35% with 5H 0M 9Sec
Cell standby = 7% with 16H 58M 44Sec
Phone idle = 4% with 11H 58M 34Sec
Android System = 3% with 42M 30Sec on CPU Usage and just 20Sec on CPU foreground
batt did last a full day for me i guess ending @ 6% when i got home
but what use is trying to save the batt life when i hardly use the phone
lets say i browsed the net for a 30min-1hour session, watched a few youtube video's/even downloaded video's for that matter or played a game or 2 for like 30 mins to an hour
ofcourse the display will be the major batt sucker by doing this and i doubt it would last an afternoon if i did so in the morning/noon time
I guess my only solution would be an extra batt or 2 for that matter if i really wanna show-off the phone and enjoy it fully for a full day. But the problem would be charging them all without a phone stand with extra batt charger
Anyways, does the batt last a full day for me , yes it does
am i satisfied doing what i did to make the batt last , N O
I got sick of my battery running out at around 3pm at work every day so I've now bought 2 extra batteries and an external charger from spider-foot.com

Well, greetings to all.
I just wanted to share my experience regarding the battery issue.
As I purchased the phone some 12 days ago, my experience is short, but somewhat effective.
First couple of days the battery lasted for app. 24h, with lots of usage (wi-fi surfing, lots of applications installation, calls, games, music, etc.). Then, I installed some "battery-indicator-related app", fully charged battery and used the phone for 15 minutes or so and went to sleep. In the morning my battery was at 80% !(it was on stand-by the whole night), and till 2pm it was at 15%, without using the phone at all.
Battery usage stated 64% "cell standby". I thought - what the .... ?
Than I did the next thing.
Uninstalled that crappy app, installed another one (similar, but other manufacturer),turned off the phone, fully charged it, turned it on, checked that wi-fi and BT are off, turned off 3G and syncs and updates, set brightness to lowest, installed black wallpaper, used task killer to kill all unwanted apps, and decided to see for how long will battery last with that settings and very little usage (couple of calls, sms and some sudoku playing).
The result:
4 days, 18 hours - since unplugged. Battery at 39%.
@ some of your replies
overflashing - ive only flashed once.
be lucky it only drops 6% when totally idle - the whole point in writing this thread was because ive previous lost 0%! when idle for hours and hours...
I have background data off (which i dont want to have to do) i have an APN switch which i use sometimes, but tbh its tedious and i shouldnt have to do this.
as far as im concerned, when i idle the phone, it shouldnt do ANYTHING

Samsung Galaxy S Battery Drain

Hi,
im having battery drain problems the phone wont last more than 5-6 hours send 20-30 texts listen to some music, i have turned off backgroud data and live wallpapers, im using something called advanced task killer free to kill the apps that are running, but i close them the re open the task bar and stuff like music player has reopened
ive also seen a post about which batterys are better is there a better one i can buy? my batterys a G7
any ideas ?
cheers
Stop using the task kiler and you'll probably see better battery life. Task killers have been proven more harmful than helpful on the newer versions of android so using it is pointless. Also pay attention to what you have synced and how often. tons of web apps synching will drain the battery faster, as will having the gps and wifi turned on--if you're not using them, disable them.
thanks for the reply i will remove the task manager,
auto sync is turned off and i only use email by refreshing the inbox
Come here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884816
In short: Have you recently updated via Kies to JPY version? If so, stop using your wifi. There is a bug with wifi with this newest firmware.
hi,
i update to 2.2.1 through kies
Do you use wifi?
If yes, switch to data, battery life will be better. You should be able to get around 48h of light active usage (i mean browsing and calling and what not) with 3g data on.
i dont really use the wifi, signals really good around me, i only got the phone friday, brought it of a friend,
charged the phone fully before i went out last night about 7pm by 1.30am the phone had cut off, that was only using the facebook andriod app and sending text messages.
Than there is something terribly wrong. Do a wipe and factory reset, if you didnt after getting a device from your friend.. It seems that some application misbehaves and drains battery.
You can check it by typing *#*#info#*#* in dialer
Several options there, if there is something strange you will see it. (suggest looking into Battery history, usage statistics)
i dont know how to type in dialer sorry sounds very stupid all i have are digits

From the above post:
TechnicR said:
About my battery life:
Previously I was on Darky's v5, with that the phone lasted 2-3 days with normal usage.
After flashing to v7 (with 100% battery) I also got the fast drainage problem. Here is what I did:
1) Turn OFF phone
2) Charge till it says it is FULL
3) Start in RECOVERY
4) WIPE battery stats
5) RESTART android (yes, it might already be on 98% or so)
6) USE phone heavily. Don't worry if it drops too fast. Use it till the Android system turns OFF automatically (it happens when your battery is below 1% - for me the phone was on 1% for about 40 mins. This is where it heavily myscalculated
7) PLUG IN your charger, TURN ON android and wait till it is FULLY charged again. (It is better if you don't use the phone at this charging up)
Now, after you disconnect the charger, you should still have 100% for some time (I've been using the phone for 32 mins - writing this post - and it is still on a hundred percent) and with this, I got back the 2-3 days battery life with normal usage.
Also, you should set WiFi to: "Never when plugged in" and by default I disable Data Network. But my phone is using WiFi all the time so it doesn't really matter
So to summerize this method, the key is to show the phone the battery's minimal capacity too, by using it till it is on null. Because with charging to 100% than wiping or flashing only introduces the maximum capacity to the system and the minimum is only guessed. THIS gives the faulty reportes and makes us think the phone drains too fast.
Try this method, than feel free to share your results

hi
I have the same problem. I bought it 2-3 days ago. today i charged it full while fone was off, switched on at around 8AM my usage detail was
3g was on
gmail on sync
skype on sync
5-10 min of skype calling
5 min of normal calling
5-10 min of facebook browsing through android app
30 min of chatting on skype
at 2PM the fone was at 20% battery. My wifi and gps were off all day.
is there anything i can do to get atleast 15 hours of battery with normal use
regards
harris
If you are having issues with your battery, before you try killing tasks, changing setting and what not and especially if you are running custom ROMs, then you need to recondition your battery. The same goes for anyone who is having high drain issues.
If you follow the steps I posted from someone else's post and then find that your battery is not having issues, then start looking at your modem (if using a custom ROM or you've upgraded to new firmware).
ive done a factory restore, ive found what my usage says idle 4% the display 80%
contrast is switched right down
i know im not using any custom roms im using the firmware that you download through kies

When data network deactivated phone die after 2 days!

Drain 7 - 8 % per hour when phone idle (Phone on with 3g data but without using it)
I really don't know how to "finger pointing" suspicion app via battery history.

BBC News App Drains Battery

Hello,
Long time lurker here and I love all the work you dev been doing here.
I've downloaded the BBC News App (the offical one) and I noticed a significant battery drain caused by it. I turned off all sync options, and it caused my Android System to be running constantly so it uses up more than 50% of the battery usage when it normally is around 3-5%, even more than the display itself! It also causes the phone back to become heated, but not overheated but I could feel the difference. I also rebooted my phone 4 times to wipe the temp. catche since I had the Android system do this to me in the past, rarely, and in all cases the reboot helped. But in this case, it didn't help at all. I had this app installed for 3 days and experienced the same battery drain for all 3 days consistently. After uninstallation. There was no more severe battery drain.
I uninstalled it and immediately I got my 12 hrs battery life back when it was 5 with BBC news app installed. Just wondering if you guys by chance have it installed and are having the same problem. I thought it would be a nice app to use, but Pulse pretty much covers everything the BBC app does and isn' a battery drain. I just found it odd that BBC News would release a app that severly drains the bettery.
Thanks.
A few nights ago I was messing around with apps before going to bed and downloaded 4 news apps, including BBC.
Woke up the next morning to around 30% battery drain over night with data turned OFF.
Battery stats showed my phone awake all night.
I uninstalled all 4 apps and haven't had the problem since then and went back to just using my browser for all my news sites.
I've found in the past that some apps are just brutal.
It sux cause BBC is a nice app.
Thanks for the post, glad to hear it just isn't me.
If you want a great news app, I highly recommend Pulse. I've been using it ever since I got my TB with 0 problems. It only uses the battery up when you're in the app but overall battery, I've never seen it go up past 4-6% depending how long you're in the app.
If it's an app that's causing the problem, wouldn't it be better to ask people in the general forums for XDA and not the thunderbolt? You would get more answers.

[Q] battery issues - 3 charges most days

Hi everyone,
I brought this wonderful phone (or atleast i thought wonderful) couple of weeks ago ( delivered on release date)
Now i expected the battery to be good as its 2300 mah but it the phone doesnt seem to last no way near as long as other claim i had an s3 before this htc one, 9 times outta 10 i only had to charge it once a day and never activated power saver mode,
On the htc one i constantly have power saver turn on and it just doesnt seem to be doing anything , i havnt changed my usage of my phone, if anything ive used it less,
For example the s3 lasted my full 8 hour shift with nothing running expcept the tunein radio app, the htc one only seems to last 4-5 hours with everything closed except the tune in radio app. Ive not changed networks so low signal shouldnt be causing the drain as there isnt a difference in signal levels,
So is there anything else i can do to stop bettery draining. Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc all turned off, screen on auto brightness ,
Sent from my htc one with just 26% battery left and i havnt even rrached 4 hours of my shift yet, left house at 9:45 with 100%
You probably have an app preventing the phone from sleeping. There are loads of tutorials on how to check for partial wake locks to fix this.

Try this or this to detect the wakelocks. For more info on wakelock, read this thread
Definitely sounds like you have an app which is preventing the phone from sleeping and you should be getting a pretty easy 1 day out the battery at the very least in moderate use.

How have you TuneIn setup.
As general when you press pause rather than stop, itt continues to record that station and is always active. Iif you go into the app settings and turn off 'autostop recording' which should be defaulted to 8 hours - turn this to never and try again to see if it improves. I've seen TuneIn eat battery life on other devices where ths happens (people thinkits stopped when its just paused and recording away in the background...
That's possible ^^^^, however if he was just to hit exit on the app it should stop the services. That and really want to be sure, swype it away in the multitasking section.
Can try Betterbatterystats in the play store as a lot of people rave about that.
Also make sure Google Now is disabled. It sucks battery life like no other. Awesome tool, however to much drain on the battery.

Guaranteed that you have horrible wakelock issues. Rogue apps, bad settings, and anything in between could be the cause.
I can go to bed with the phone fully charged and, 8 hours later, wake it up to see it's still at 100% (mobile data, GPS, WiFi left active.)
Once I'm bored of constantly picking it up and playing with it (i.e. get back to standard usage patterns) I get the feeling it will likely run to 3 or more days between charges. Won't be this month though

The Same happens with my phone.

gesendet von dem One and only
Well there are various reasons for this..Maybe an app that drains much battery not leaving cpu to sleep. You can download better battery stats and see the wakelocks and the cpu states that your cpu runs on.. You may also need a battery calibration. It will not increase the battery capacity of course but it will eliminate the faulty battery stats bin that tells the system the battery percentage. You may have for example 25% battery left and your device may show 2% or even close.
I assume that you do not have wifi always on, screen on for hours or using mobile data..The consumption of battery is huge.

Worth dialling *#*#3424#*#* and doing the battery test, although as everyone else has said it's more than likely an app.
I had a sgs2 over 2 years, rooted and optimized in battery usage, i was already happy. Now with the htc one it's a completely new experience....already now after a few days, with root but still no tweaks i get 60% left at 11pm!before the sgs2 was empty...can't wait

Download Better Battery Stats, leave it for a day and then upload a screenshot of your wakelocks. My battery is easily lasting the day (ended at 11pm at 76% yesterday)
Same-ish problem.
Hey i'm having a similar problem,
I bought the HTC One (silver, 32Gb) A couple of days ago and the battery isn't even lasting a day with what I'd say as Medium/light usage. I do leave Mobile data on so i can get Skype/Facebook/line calls ect instantly, but i assumed that's normal.
I just left my phone alone for an hour with the screen off and it lost 4%, could this be a battery defect?
Are you telling me to get over a days usage, i have to leave mobile data turned off and only turn it on when i want to use Skype ect?
I saw a post above that one guys gets 3 days of usage with Mobile date, Wifi, etc all turned on. Is this the norm, or does he have a super hero battery?
I see the general consensus is to download "Better Battery Stats" and send pics of wakelocks, but Is there comparable app for free that will do the trick, as i don't have money currently on my English account.
Thanks to all those taking time out of their own lives to help others.

You probably have an app preventing the phone from sleeping. There are loads of tutorials on how to check for partial wake locks to fix this.

[Q]Battery Drain[Q]

Hi there guys,
I suspect I have a battery drain in my HTC One, abd if I don't than this phone is terrible, however I know I do as I have owned several abd this is the only one to act like this
Anyway I only got the phone Wednesday, so bare in mind it's fairly new. Fully charged it Wednesday night, took it off the charger on Thursday morning barely any usage and it later 11 hours. Sane story today, in fact I went to the cinema and it went from 90% to 59% in under 2 hours whilst power save was enabled and the phone was on standby in my pocket. At one point I put this down to being hot in my pocket, but thinking about it now, it wasn't really hot there.
Anyway I installed a battery stat app and I will put the results in via photo. What it basically tells me is Google Backup Transport is killing my device and Google Account Manager is it's trusty friend. I only installed the battery manager tonight, however these results look pretty accurate granted what they say about the other apps based on usage.
I have disabled some things in my Google account to stop syncing, however my phone backs up to Dropbox NOT Google so I don't understand this drain. Can someone please help? I'm not rooted and running stock 4.2. Thanks.

Turn off auto backup. Clear cache for Google play services.
Report back later. You should be able to tell that if a Google backup service is using 71% of your battery, something is up.
And usually people around here use GSam, but w/e.
