nandroid backup in clockworkmod does a complete backup, yet if you want to use backup to restore in other rom then you need titanium backup (or something alike); messages and call list i do with sms backup+

yet it is just a safety backup so u can't use it in another custom rom (wich is probably the reason to do the backup)
there are a few options to extract items out of a nandroid backup tough, but i consider it a hassle

U can use Nandroid backup. For this you have to be root and CWM installed. There is plenty of intructions on how you can do that in the forum.

totally noob here and i did lots of google'ling
i have to 2 nandroid backup file one i did while i was in stock 2 months ago the other one when i was in cognition 2 weeks ago both done in rom manager app
now i m using MikeyMike01's Doc modified rom (build 18) i tried to just to restore the data part of my latest backup in cwm recovery, like i did when i was running Di11i's Darkyy's Raw Steel, but now the restore messed up my phone and i had to re-flash my rom
is there a way to restore my latest nandroid backup in my current rom?
you need to be using Titanium Backup for your app backups. Nandroid is an image of your configuration, much like a system restore in windows (to make a loose comparison)

Hi Xda Members
I have a little problem!
I just love the variety of ROM and Kernel's that i can choose
But i haven't found how to properly backup:
SMS
MMS
Apps
Rest of my data
So i can use it every time i flash a new ROM
"What happen was:
- That i am now stuck with Rocket Rom V21,
- And i want to pass to DarkyRom 3.3,
- But i don't want to lose all my apps and stuff.
- How can i save all that and load it again after flash a new ROM."
Thanks
PS: Sorry for my ignorance but i have found so many but i haven't found one that i know who to use it.

Option 1: Use Nandroid backup (Root)
Option 2: Use Titanium Backup (Root) for Apps and stuffs. and for SMS/MMS backup there any many Apps available in Market.
i use mybackup root, if you are not rooted there is a version on the market
download app back up and restore[infolife] for apps and netqin sync for contacts both are free and very simple and both back ups ur data on your sd memory

But doesn't it restore the kernel and System?
If you do a NAND backup you are backing up the entire OS. So if you restore it, it will be restored to the state you left it in before making the backup. All SMS, apps, call log, everything will be like you left it, including the kernel.
THIS is what you're looking for, and this is what we do before we flash ROM's, so when we want to go back to that ROM we do a restore in CWM. Voila, we are exactly back to where we were. A NAND backup is also a must have in case unexpected things happen - like bootloops.
I always have two or three backups. One of them is the one with the best battery life and stability (a life boat), the other one is CM9 alpha (for when i'm bored), and the third one is the ROM i currently use. This way i can't mess things up. Ever.
Use titanium to backup your sms/mms, call logs and apps.
I want to know how to make a data backup so I won't have to restore all the apps and the contacts after flashing new ROMs which requires data wipe..I tried searching before posting this..but I didn't understand anything
and yes I am a noob

if there is a rom where a fullwipe is needed, then you will get many fc's if you
restore a nandroid data.
but i'll give you the answer:
make a simple backup in cwm and go to advanced restore, there you can choose data

one of the easy way but still you can also try use ultimate backup from market, free and just use it to backup all aplications that you are installing/using on one rom, and when you flash another rom, just use it to reinstall them. The free version all you need to do is confirm manually all installs
How to perform a complete backup for ROM changes:
(0. Root your system if you are on stock Samsung firmware)
1. Backup your apps and their data with TitaniumBackup (click "Backup/Restore", click checkmark icon in upper right corner, select "Backup all user apps"). Do not backup system apps/data unless you have a good reason.
2. Backup your SMS with SMS Backup & Restore
3. Backup your call logs with Call log Backup & Restore.
4. Export your contacts to a .vcf file or sync them to your google account.
Your internal and external SD cards will not be touched when flashing ROMs so they do not require backup.

HTC backup can backup and restore your settings, Wi-Fi passwords, etc. but I've never used it so I don't know how comprehensive it is.

If you have root access you can use Titanium Backup. Then you can just copy the TitaniumBackup folder to your pc while you do the factory reset. Then reinstall TB and place the folder on you storage and run restore.
Then you will have all your setting back on your device.
