Hows it do for 720 or 1080 HD rendering? - Raspberry Pi Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not too familiar with the Pi. But always considering options for a new HTPC / media center.
What's the general consensus on this nifty little thing regarding it's ability to handle HD material? Most of my collection is 720p due to having a 720 television. Can it handle an average bitrate of about 4,000-4,500kbps with peaks topping out at about 12,000-13,000kbps max (with very rare peaks hitting 20,000kbps)?
Thanks
Aaron

My pi running xbian handles 720p no problem for the most part, although it may occasionally buffer during really busy scenes. The biggest problem I had was that it couldn't handle DTS audio. Caused buffering every few seconds. I don't have any 1080p films as my TV is only 720p

Thanks Endoroid. DTS isn't an issue, as my sound system is still of the Dolby era and all of my, backups (cough cough) I encode, I encode with Pro-Logic. I use my sound system for 99% music. And while my front speakers are abso-freakin-lutely amazing (Infinity IL40 towers), I can't bring myself to get upgrade my 25 year old Kenwood receiver which was top of the line during it's time (kr-v126r). It just sounds, and works, that good still.

I think I heard a couple weeks ago that the Pi is going to get an update and will handle HD material much better. I don't remember specifics though. Anybody heard this?

I'm currently using the raspberrypi as a mediacenter using xbian and it works flawless. I bought a cheap external hdd case (had an old hdd lying around) and hooked it to my pi.
Formatted as ext4 it can handle 9GiB 720P movies without any hassle. I've also tried a 25gb 1080p rip, but that was a little too much. (though it was still very watchable)
Samba transfer speeds are around 8-9mb/s so it will take a little longer to put your movies on the pi. Usenet/torrent speeds cap at around 3.5-4mb/s (on a 80mbit connection).

Same results on my PI. Can't actually play 1080p HD perfectly, but can do 720p just fine. Leveraging something like h264 I can watch 1080p perfectly.

Mine handles 1080p sources fine so long as they are less than about 6gb in size. More than that and I get a lot of buffering as I'm running over wifi. I haven't noted if it is related to audio encoding or not, but I'm sure that DTS will have a negative impact as well.
My projector is only 720p, so I don't consider this a big issue given the cost of the RPi.
I'm running OpenELEC. It occassionally freezes, but it handles the 1080p files slightly better than the JB ATV2, which also had crashing problems. The UI is more responsive on the RPi.
=RV=

Is there a way in which this setup can upscale the video rate from my moderately less sized 720p mkv rips as 1080p to my Sony led TV? If so can you post a link please?

XBMC always outputs video at 1080p unless you change it's settings to output at the videos native resolution.

For me 1080p works perfectly with raspbmc when playing bigbuckbunny

1080p works well on my pi running raspbmc. However, it did have some issues with certain codecs, with some sound syncing issues. But all in all the thing is fantastic as a small media center.

I've used my rPi to play both 720 and 1080 and find it can under the right circumstances do both very well. The issue I came across with 1080 was more the fact the file was on a different device streaming to it via Wifi and ended up buffering a lot.

Does anyone know if as part of the update process they will start DVD ISO support? Or if it already exists? Overall absolutely love it as a media box, but there are still a lot of issues with codec support.

I've run xbmc for years.......big tip for anyone use openelec for pi doesn't skip a beat at all. All media handled on wired lan not a single issue.....for the record that includes 1080 24p

The i stands for interlaced, and it's not really 1080 resolution; it's about more like 2 540p images overlayed. Basically 1080p is sharper and 1080i is a bootlegged 1080p.

I have full ver of coreplayer and it plays avi movies fine for me. Watching one right now.
In the diamond Software section, there's a video encoder specifically made for the device.
I know that video recoding is not always the nicest/fastest way to get stuff on the device, but it does a greate job.
In that thread it's mention that CorePlayer doesn't support hardware acceleration...

Am running coreplayer right now and it supports hardware playback, Whats the deal, how large are these files (in MB and resolution), natively encoded XViD movies (or GB sizes) work fine on the Raph. If you are attempting to watch a full HD video expect issues but what do you expect otherwise?

^ LMAO @ THAT LINK i will def be using that site quite a bit... but thanks ill definitely download this and see what's good.
@ labbbby... i mean ill check it out... but ya recoding the file seems like such a unnecessary step... especially since older phones specifically my out titan played divx files straight off my comp flawlessly.
we have g sensor programs, light sensor program, themes, ported programs... all kinds of extras... but a video player seems to be too much ... and its not like they phone lacks power... it seems more than capable to view high quality video.
and vanx for exapmle... i have a 480p rip of naruto about 200mb that will never work... are there any settings changed to get the playback smooth?

I also regularly convert video over to 3gp when i need too.
Ive had -0 problems with the media player and actually am really impressed with how great it looks.
There is a video converter called "super" somewhere out there on the interwebs. One of the greatest free video programs ive used. Just select 3gp and it sets all the codecs up for you, or you can tweak and adjust to suit your needs.

I can definitely recommend Handbrake if you're want something fairly easy, or if you're hardcore, I tend to use ffmpeg command line in all my 9-5 work conversions.
Do not forget to change the aspect ratio of the video for 16/9!
Best Converter for me
I use XmediaRecode for realy everything

Hi, according to the BB official website, the Z10 uses 1280 x 768 resolution, at 356 PPI, this means a 15:9 aspect ratio. You would do well to get a free video converter with some editing features, I used Reincubate video converter and found it suitable. Gluck!:good:

I strongly recommend Media Coder. It's free and takes advantage of Intel Core i Quicksync and Nvidia CUDA Hardware Acceleration.

I'm able to convert SD Definition Videos at 14x the Original Speed.
And another thing to keep in mind: The Size of the microSD Card is almost irrelevance. The more important fact: The Card is formatted with Fat32 File System. This means, your video file can't be bigger than 4 GB. No file in Fat32 can be bigger than 4 GB, regardless of the storage space on your Card.

Yeah, but that does require root, so it might not be an option for 80% of the users.
I use AppGeeker converter all the time with excellent results. I mostly convert audio files, but it will do video as well.
You can set the resolution from 360p to 1920p and others in its settings panel.

Few Questions Regarding CM10

I bought a Nook Color for my girlfriend a while back and have been running CM7.2 on it. It's been great. Now, with the price reduction for the Nook HD+, I am considering buying one and running CM10 off of emmc. However, first I have a few questions that I haven't been able to specifically find.
1. How is the battery life running CM10.1 on the emmc and/or sd card? I know it will vary based on usage, but a rough estimate would be fine. Or just a comparison to the stock rom.
2. Any bugs/issues that affect daily use for the device? I know sleep of death was an issue for a while on the Nook Color running CM7. I heard CM10.1 on HD+ had an issue with not being able to change volume while an app was full screen, but I think it has since been resolved.
3. Does hardware decoding for movies work for apps like MX Video Player, etc?
4. Would you recommend the HD+ over the 7" HD?
Thanks, and I just wanted to say I appreciate what all of you developers are doing here.
>Does hardware decoding for movies work for apps like MX Video Player, etc?
It works for some formats, not all. The criteria of which can and can't use HW decode can be a bit esoteric.
Basically, the Nook HD+ can smoothly play 720p using SW decode, and smooth 1080p using HW decode (HW+ in MX parlance). The hardware may be capable of even higher, but MX can't play anything higher than 1080p using HW+, and 1440p obviously chugs when using SW.
I did some "extreme case" test clips for the Nexus 10 when it came out last year.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995176
Check out the 1080p BD clip (1080_BD.1/2/3.txt, rename to rars and extract w/ 'hdtest' password). The clip has a 35Mbps bitrate as typical for BD, and Nook HD+ played it smoothly in either the stock video player or MX w/ HW+ decoding. The 1440p clip can only be played in SW.
The strange thing was that when I re-encoded the 1080p MP4 clip to a lower bitrate, but with tighter compression (x264's 'veryslow' preset), MX can't play it in HW+ any more, only in SW. I recoded the clip again using x264 'medium' preset, and HW+ again works. So for those doing their own video encodes out there, stick to a low reframe count if you want to use HW decode in Android. The 'veryslow' presets uses ref=16, while medium uses ref=3. The penalty is larger size: veryslow=125MB, medium=143MB, or +14% size.
The low-bitrate 1080p MP4 clip using veryslow preset is named 1080_demo.mp4. You can try it out, along with the other test cases. Pretty sure all 1440p clips are a no-go for HD+. Then again, that's not something most folks have to worry about, at least for the next few years.

1. Just switched over to CM10.1 so I dont have a good grasp on battery life for cm10.1, but in general on stock the battery life is great. I do see where a lot of people say you loose the GREAT sleep ability of the Nook HD+ when moving from stock to cm10.1.
2. I have not noticed any issues with cm10.1 as of yet. I switched over from stock after a month due to some issues with sluggish performance after being used for a week or so. On the stock, browsing and app switching would get SLOWER AND SLOWER and less responsive. The minute I restored from an earlier backup, I was back up and running for about a week. Since my restore involved going to an older backup, then doing a full titanium restore of all apps, data and system files, it leads me to believe there was some cache issues that I could NOT resolve. Got tired of a weekly restore so switched over to cm10.1 Have only been running 2 days so cant speak on if this solved the issue or not.
3. Hardware decoding does work for some files. I download a lot of TV shows, and generally they play fine via HW decoding in Dice or MX Player (prefer Dice, but it seems like its a personal choice as to what vid player people like). I did a test for someone on another thread with an MKV of an anime package that was SW playback only, but my MKV of Defiance played just fine via HW. Must be something about that particular encoding.
4. YES. I could put in a joke here about 8.9" ALWAYS being better than 7" but I wont. I like the larger size. My wife has a kindle fire and I had an Acer a500 previously. I actually miss the Acers 10" but the resolution was the deciding factor for me to upgrade. Most of my video watching is of torrented TV shows, and I generally take the smallest versions available (generally 200meg, 480p 1 hour shows) and even those look noticeably better in a side by side comparison on the 2 tablets. Put something in 720p side by side and its phenomenal. Right now for the price difference there is NO reason to NOT go with the HD+ 32gig!
@ Aaron:
So you would say that CM10.1 for the nook HD+ is good enough for a daily driver?
Yes. Was not able to get a good read on batt usage today.....left WiFi file transfer on and sucked the batt dry during my hour commute. That was my fault though. Its going very well as a daily driver.

Where To Find 2K Videos?

So I got this fancy new phone with 2K resolution so where can I get a video to blow my friends away? YouTube seems to only stream up to 1080p even though several of the videos say 2K.
On the g3 there was an apk floating around that supported 2k video in the YouTube app maybe google or search the forums for that particular YouTube apk. If I'm not mistaken the web version of YouTube allows this as well.

To watch it on 4k TV. Also frame grabs from video are much better quality and you can zoom in, without loss of quality when using phone for watching and actually I use it very often on my Note 3, since with fixed lens framing is always far from perfect and there is always option of not using 4k video at all.

Awesome this is exactly what I was looking for!
Can someone else upload or send me link please
I see the option for 1440p with the posted apk version but when I selected it, nothing changes. Even when I keep selecting it, nothing happens.

Wow just wow. Watching these videos, I can zoom in on them with my fingers on the stock player and it still retains the sharpness. Freaking amazed at the resolution and sharpness.
Ps you can two finger zoom live while the video is playing.

YouTube cap at 720p?

Why every video I watch using the YouTube app. The highest resolution I can view them in is 720p? And I have fast Internet connection!

I noticed this too! I was really looking forward to seeing what 4k was like on the device with a few fancy YouTube videos. Unfortunately it appears the highest option I have is 720p in any video.

i think depends on Youtube, not Droid.
Use viral pro and get rid of YouTube, viral pro is way better and streams way faster. Try the free version.
This is a youtube issue. Other qHD phones lost their 1080/1440p options as well. There are a lot of 1 star reviews on the play store complaining about this. I hope they give us 1440p back soon!

I tried the free version of viral, I really like it so far. Being able to play videos over another app is amazing. The problem is I can still only watch videos at 720p.
I remember reading somewhere right after the phone came out that it may be an issue with the turbo, specifically after the ota that was released day one. People were saying that they were able to watch videos at 1440p before they installed that update. Of course now I can't find the thread where I read that to confirm.
Really hoping that we get Lollipop relatively quickly. Thinking that will fix some of the little software bugs the phone has.
found an older one that I least gives me 1080p
5.13.3-51303300
I have the Sony Xperia Z3v which has a 1080p screen and YouTube only works at 720p for it as well. So I believe it is an app issue and not related to the phone.
guys look at my post about the YouTube number
Uninstall app updates in app options menu for YouTube. Then you can watch 1440p vids

This is not the case, I have viral and u can watch whatever quality u want as long as the YouTuber is doing it in that quality. It has nothing to do with the Turbo I guarantee you. Not every YouTuber does it in the same quality, sometimes I'm watching 2K and other times I can only watch 360P. Again it's all in what the YouTuber is using to record it. For example go to MKBHD or Phonedogs channel, they usually have videos in 2K.

I understand how youtube works, and yes I know that not all videos are capable of higher resolutions.
I have tried using viral with multiple videos, videos that are definitely high enough resolution, like the 4K gopro videos on youtube. I even tried some of the videos from phonedogs as you mentioned. None will play at higher than 720p on my phone when using viral or the youtube app. My friend who has an LG G3 is able to play at 1440p without issues. Definitely seems like an issue with the phone to me.
Yeah still nothing. Tried installing older youtube version and viral. Nothing. WTF good is a 4k screen if there is nothing you can watch in 4k.
Note 4 has the same problem. Don't know what's up. My S4 and Moto X 2014 and One Max all work properly.

Is it just YouTube that caps at 720p? Can you watch 4k videos in general? Like a downloaded file to the phone or a recorded video?
