Does this apk have to stay in system/app to function properly? When i got root, 1st thing i did was delete the system apks of all the updated apps, play store worked for a while, did some automatic updates and im pretty sure i browsed on it, later i pressed the add small app icon in the multitask menu and when downloading one, it crashed and would continually crash upon opening until i moved the apk back in to system/app, anyone know anything?

No you can delete it without a problem. You can look at it like a setup.exe file after you installed the program you can delete it. But since it's a system ap it might work different, why delete it in the first place? It barely saves space.

housekeeping i suppose, it will only update to the data/app anyway, having duplicates would just bug me. Its back in data now and behaving normally, dont know what caused the problem before.
Update: Crashed again when trying to download an update, staying in system

Is there any way to re-load the default Samsung Captivate calendar app without starting from scratch? I deleted it thinking that I wouldn't really need it (stupid)and now I realize most calendar apps look for it. If not, is there an independent calendar app that could replace it?
Thanks a lot.

Are you on stock or a custom rom? If it's the latter I would just download the zip again, extract the calender apk and place it in the correct folder (using root explorer or whatever) and apply permissions again, and reboot.

Every time I try to install the apk it tells me that it could not be installed. I tried downloading it from a few different sources and I get the same result every time. I put it into the system folder and try to instal it from there. I've gotten rid of all the other calendar files. No clue why I can't install the new one. I'm rooted and have permissions to side-load apps. any advice?

Because you don't need to install it. Put the apk in the system folder, make sure it has the correct file permissions and then reboot. Done!
Okay. Well, it's now in the System folder as far as I can tell. I rebooted andthe Calendar is still not installed. What I'm not sure about is the permissions. What are the "correct permissions"? as in, what should they be set to and how would I chane them if I needed to?
Anyone? This has been driving me crazy for like two weeks now.
Still no dice...
Okay, I'm taking a crack at bumping this again. Honestly, I have no idea why this isn't working. I see the apk and odex files listed under my /system folder.
When I check Titanium Backup I see the following files:
com.android.calendar
com.android.providers.calendar
They're both crossed out.
Why won't they install? What am I doing wrong?

I think these apps should be under "/system/app" and not "/system" folder.
Yeah, I also have them under /system/app but still no luck. This is really driving me nuts. They're there. For all intents and purposes the phone SHOULD recognize them and install them... but it doesn't. Weird. I honestly don't know what I should do except forget it.
I tried posting this in the app and themes forum but had no luck, I have an issue with the Medscape app. I wasn't able to update the library so I uninstalled the app and manually deleted the library files from me Medscape folder, later I learned that the update problem was because of the adblock app. I solved that and tried to reinstall Medscape, so far so good. When I try to re install the library files, the app tells me theres no update available (???) and it shows the current files as if they are installed, but the folder is still deleted and when I try to look up something in the database, nothing comes up.
Is there a way to wipe completely the Medscape db registry so I can do clean install?
Thanks a lot

I had the exact same problem and I wasn't able to solve it... Only a factory reset did it...
I'm not root but if you are root go to /data folder and delete medscape info from that. I think it might work.
The problem is that you deleted the Mescape folder from your SD card but it contains a database file (maybe the index of articles) so anything you search returns nothing!
The solution would be to delete that old account information and data, and I think it resides in the /data folder but I can't confirm that because I'm not root.
Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. Nothing related to medscape on the /data folder. I'll keep looking or I'll clean install when I flash Gingerbread

Having similar Medscape problem, this time I cannot delete Medscape pics/icons in my Gallery. Practically FC's whenever I try to open.
These are .PNG files - is there a trick to delete these?
===
UPDATE: I discovered that I could delete one of the PNG pics in the Gallery folder but not delete a second one - the Gallery app would freeze. It actually required a power ON/OFF to "reset" the gallery folder (whose ("number of files") did show that the pic was indeed deleted) and permit me to delete another image. For some reason, as I was fiddling with the FILES app, a Medscape folder popped up (it hadn't appeared before) and it had hundreds of low-kb files in it, including the PNGs. Luckily I was able to delete this Medscape folder without a hitch... other than the 2 minutes it took to actually delete. And wouldn't you know it: my Epic is running faster than ever. What is in that Medscape app I wonder...

My issue is another,
I m using SG2 rooted, i removed my ad blocker and re install Medscape.
So i finaly managed to start instaling the resaurces .... the resaurces started from 1 of 24 ...and downloading ...
Is it logical to keep downloading ...after the 24 ... has been downloaded already?
for example 34 of 24 ...and keep going??
Hi!
I've a problem when trying to update my Medscape app. When I try to get ref updates, it suddently appears: "Not able to complete download at this time"
I've read this post , where they speak about ad blocking apps causing this problem, however I'm using cyanogenmod CM11 M12, without any apps of this kind, more over, I searched for Hosts file, and when I open it, there's only this line: "127.0.0.1 localhost". I don't know what else to do, I've tried unistalling the app, cleaning all data before so, In deed, I've also tried to do a clean install of CM11 M12, with no luck.
Wish you could help me!
Would really appreciate some help.
Removed some bloatware via Titanium Backup, and of course, I got trigger happy.
process com.motorola.contacts (Contacts force closes)
process com.motorola.conversations (text messaging force closes)
So I have Root Explorer and got a hold of a system dump for Bionic.
I started by moving YahooContacts.apk (one of the apps I guess I shouldn't have uninstalled) back to the /system/app folder...but it doesn't show up anywhere as an installed app (just that the .apk was moved). If I try to actually select the .apk and try to install it says "Application did not Install" but the .apk IS moved.
Processes still don't work after moving.
I would appreciate any help, at this point I can't text or place calls. Thanks in advance, this forum helped me with the entire root process.
You cannot freeze/remove ANY of the other authenticator apps, it will cause contacts to freeze. I ran into that on the Droid 3.
First off there is no need to delete/remove, Freezing them accomplishes the same thing but most importantly it allows you to reverse what you have broken by Defrosting it. Do yourself a favor stop deleting and start freezing. If 16GB is not enough internal storage for you then you might consider an external HD from Seagate!!!!!!! LOL
I realize I made a big mistake. That's totally on me But it's in the past
Do I have any options to get this working again? I am definitely going to freeze apps in the future.
If I did delete an authenticator process, is there any way I can get those back? Would they be available through a system dump?
I believe that you need to make sure the permissions are correct after reinstalling an apk to the system/app folder. I've never done this, so I'll let you do the research. I've heard you can use root explorer to do this or a script with terminal emulator. Sorry I can't help more
I have the exact same problem, and am attempting to troubleshoot this issue on a different forum, however I am not allowed to post links but I'll try and keep you updated.
Edit: It's not a problem with permissions, I've made sure that they're correct with root explorer. It seems to be a Bionic-specific issue. I might just return it at this rate.
Thankfully, there's an unroot to use. I think im in the same boat. re-added all the yahoo related .apk and .odex and set permissions/owner, still nothing. Unroot and hope the Verizon dude is in a good mood!
Except now ADB is throwing "ERROR: ADB could not be granted root access" when trying to unroot
excellent.
Someone in the thread I was talking about had some success, its on droidforums dot net, droid bionic forum, bionic support, HELP! accidentally deleted IMSCServer from Droid Bionic thread. Maybe you can try something I haven't.
just do a factory reset thats what i had to do as I had the same problem.
I tried that, it didn't work... Did you actually get your system apps back? Did you do it through settings or the recovery menu?
i froze my bloat thats prob the difference and it was yahoo that caused the problem for me...

It really begs the question why anything with Yahoo is required by the system. Furthermore, why did they make it so frustratingly hard to reinstall system apps on the Bionic? Really disappointed in Motorola for this.
Here is the fix for Contacts, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
That did it.. I have been looking for the YAHOO Contacts.apk file for 3 days with a bloody wortheless phone that I spent 300 shells on!
BTW I agree with Glimmerman, WHY DID YAHOO get involved in contacts? Talk about a sneaky way in integrate them.

Sorry if I'm newbtastic here but what do I do with these APKs and odex. I tried installing with ES explorer but it would not install. Am I supposed to move these files somewheres? /system/app then try install ? Thanks
answered my own question. I WAS newbtastic afterall. LOL. Thanks anyways. This did it. Dang Yahoo!
lol yep my girlfriend did this yesterday fortunately i have a bionic too so i just pulled the files from my phone and pushed to hers.
damn you yahoo.
also, apparently go contacts EX will 'fix' the problem (you must use their app however)

Wait - WHERE are we putting the Contact fix and do we extract it once we've moved it?

I'm confused as to where to put this. I downloaded it and it downloaded into tapatalk downloads. Where do I move it and do I extract it?
recently i tried to instal some apk files using astro or es, the file open up as normal until when i try to click on the instal button, it didn't react but the cancel button does, i had quite a number of apk files saved in my sdscard which worked previously but now none of them works. i looked into application setting for the box to checked to allow installation from unknown source checked but still the same. just upgraded to 2.3.5, hope this not the reason.
I'm not sure why they won't install but let me say this: about 3/4 of the apks available on the Pirate Bay are malicious.
Anything else weird going on with the phone?
Can you successfully uninstall an application?
i find wierd too, btw, those apks are not pirated, some are download from this forum which i had kept very long for future when i change phone like circular battery, simi folders when they are posted here long time ago which not yet out in the market at that time. of course now i dont need them anymore but just for testing purposes. i tried uninstal these few and instal back using the apk thru esfile and astro but no veil, help needed, tks...
i suspect that the system had disable the instal button whereas the cancel still works, dont what had cause it
Hi everyone,
My home button and the "swipe from the top" has disappeared since my last restart. I really have no idea what's happened and now I am using the apps called "Button Savior" to return the home screen.Maybe thid was because I have deleted some system files from system/data/data/com.android. providers.settings. I have restarted several times and it didn't work for my device. Now its really inconvenient to use the Kindle Fire HD. My current software version is 7.1.13. Could you guys help me to solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance.
maybe pull the rom in the development section and see if you can get the deleted files from it?
the only time my framework dissapeared was when i was trying to install the play store. i got it back by renaming a couple google framework apk's in the system folder and restarting...
Hi adiliyo,
How can I pull the Rom in the development section? As I have deleted many system files, I think I am in a much bigger trouble than yours.

if you can't get the individual files, maybe reflashing that rom will fix your problems
This happened to me, and some other folks. Look for a thread asking about how to view/run settings.
Anyway, some fixes mentioned were to turn off notifications for Gmail - hard to do if you can't get to settings, though.
What worked for me was to try and side-load an application - copy an APK file to the 'downloads' folder on your KFHD via a connected computer using the windows file explorer, or ADB - and then install the APK. In my case by clicking on it using a file manager. The KFHD told me that I would have to enable foreign application installs to finish the install of the side-loaded APK, and took me to that portion of settings that dealt with that. In that section was the 'Reset to Factory Defaults' button.
I pressed the reset button, and got everything back. Earlier applications (google play store) that I hadn't un-installed in an attempt to fix the problem were still there. Super User was intact. I downloaded & installed everything again, and all is working as it should be.
Until Amazon comes clean with this walking ad-server, details on how to modify it without introducing issues are going to be sketchy . It's just our lot in life, if you'll pardon. I appreciate having super user access, and all the Google apps I love to use, but what's really required is the ability to modify the boot loader. Until that's available, it's going to be try until it fails, and then scramble to recover.
Nice HW, but limited by Amazon's vision of the customers.

It works!!!! all the missing parts have come back. the Go launcher EX has saved in Cloud.
solution
download an app called my android, open the app go to my apps and find the settings app then go to device and then go to factory reset. its the only way I found to access settings when drop down didn't work. after resetting to factory my buttons all came back after doing the tooltip for startup
What worked for me on my AF tablet was to uninstall all 4 Google APK files, then uninstall the Launcher Hijack. The tablet swipe down and home button both came back for me. I then re-installed the Google APKs, but didn't re-install Launcher Hijack. Tablet works fine, functions are normal, just have to put up with seeing the default Amazon screen first before tapping the Nova Launcher icon to get to my custom screen, a minor inconvenience, and I didn't have to do a factory reset.
