[Q] Rooting predicament - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I asked this question before but didn't really get an answer so here goes
I bought my captivate from my friend(ONLY $26) and found out that the usb charging port doesn't work. Well that was all fine i could charge it with a separate battery charger so i bought this to charger it: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/i9000desktop.html?cagpspn=pla&gclid=CITOp6T2-rUCFaiiPAodEBYA9Q and it works perfect. Then I called At&t and they actually gave me the unlock code!
So my Captivate is:
-Froyo 2.2
-Unlocked on tmobile
-Can't use usb port.(So i cant sideload apps)
Also, i can still transfer files from my phone through i micro sd card reader. I have tried the update.zip but i keeps giving me a signature error.
SO is there a way to root my phone? and Is there a update.zip that works with the froyo 3e recovery? or is there one that can disable the signature verification?

Everything I've read suggests the only way to get root is with an update.zip and running it in recovery through "reinstall packages". I wonder if the error you're getting is because you aren't using a flashable zip that is compatible with Froyo. Unfortunately I'm far from Froyo and have no way of testing but I could suggest looking around for some other flashable root zips.

I believe that worked on 2.1 but in 2.2 they added the signature verification, therefor, update.zip doesn't work.
There seems to be another way to root but it's not 100% confirmed yet (through a app in the market). I'll try to look for it but otherwise, you'd need a working usb to root.

Well if he's on 2.2 I thought that z4root worked? Not on the marketplace anymore but it's all over the net lol.
All I know is for a fact, z4root doesn't work on 2.3.5 and the only reason I could root w/o USB on 2.3.5 was luck hahaha.

Perhaps it will work. Haven't seen it around in so long, kinda forgot about it. Never know

Eh, I can't see it making anything worse, then again I've never read the source code so I'm not sure what it changes. 2.3.5 somehow worked with miezu m9 root app but again, never read source so don't know why it works

Thanks for all the help!
I can't use z4root because it's not on the market so i would need to sideload it because At&t doesn't allow non market apps. And to side load i need a working usb port :c
My best chance would be to find a flash able zip that works with the 2.2 signature verification. :/

There's none that I know of....I didn't realize 2.2 had the non-market apps lock? That sucks. I know 2.3.5 didn't have it, (or at least mine, I had it second hand but I thought he flashed it to stock 2.3.5)...

[Q] Going back to stock 2.1 from 2.2 without ODIN

Hey guys,
I had posted another thread regarding how my Captivate was only charging via the USB and not allowing any sort of data connection. There has been no change, and Im looking to at least take it back to stock to take to get fixed or to wait for OTA updates.
Is there any way to replace system files from within the phone to bring it back to the stock JF6? Can I use ODIN over bluetooth or wifi? My guess is no. Any other ideas anyone has?
Thanks!

the usb doesn't work?? that's not good. but i think you may be in luck

^if you are rooted with rom manager ( this is unsighned ) this is the ota jf7. that is as close to stock as we can get. i dont think jf6 has been made into a .zip.
if you are not rooted you can cognition 2.2 beta 5.5 and up. there is a kernel with the proper 2e recovery version but it needs odin to install. this kernel is in cognition beta 5.5-7
edit: 2nd link removed because it would be useless to the op.
if youre not already on cog beta 5.5-7 you might be SOL. now that i think about it you need 2e recovery for root, you need it to flash a signed rom, you need it to run clockwork mod recovery, you need it for evrything that will flash your phone without usb really.
forgive the stupid question but have you verified that it is the phone that has a broken usb? does the computer see anything? did you try odin? can you get download mode? did you try adb? different drivers? different cable? different computers?
you may need to send it for repair and pay the bill yourself. or if you have insurance report it stolen or run it over with your car. break the screen, something...

Beta 6 and 7 versiosn have the 2e recovery baked in, the kernel has 2e support with that ROM.
Sorry about your USB not being recognized. Have you tried to install the drivers? What were you doing with your phone when this happened?

Just take some time and make sure it is not the usb cable or the usb port on the computer
Not sure all the methods you have tried but......have you tried newest Odin? Take out battery and sim open oxen then plug phone in USB for download mode?......

Are you using the USB cord that came with the phone, or a purchased one? I can only connect with my PC using the real original cord.
As mentioned I hope you are on cog 2.2 6 or 7 then you can flash JH7 ota on your phone.

Grab this with your phone, and use ClockworkMod Recovery to install from .zip. This is the official JH7 OTA update and it is signed. This is the closest to stock you can get without a usb cable, bonus, it is rooted for you, that's the only difference.
I tried to flash via clockwork with a signed OS like the JF7 one, but I still get an error. Same one as trying to flash an unsigned rom. I still boot into 3e recovery, which I know is wrong. I cant flash a different kernel or anything to change it as I cant connect via USB. I think Im pretty much done at this point. I do have a working version of Cog 2.2b3... the screen is usually stays in landscape mode. Occasionally it will boot up in portrait mode. Do you guys know a reason for this?
Thanks!

already answered, any luck?
I have read through as many posts as I could find and appreciate all the help. I cant flash to a newer version of Cog which is my biggest problem. I am stuck with the 3e recovery and without being able to make a data connection to run ODIN. I can get the phone into download mode, but there is zero data connection via the USB cable. Cant connect to the SD card with the phone on and cant connect to the computer in download mode. It used to work, same usb cable, all drivers installed, and with the same computer. Just stopped one day. Ill keep the search alive. Hoping at one point, we will be able to flash out of 3e recovery and it will save my day!
I am in the same boat as you bro (exact same scenario). Thanks for posting this and thanks for all the people that have posted advice! I'll keep checking back with this thread to see if there is any hope of a fix for us.
Holy bump!

Rooting your Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 write-up

The OTA 2.2.1 update made things complicated for Droid users who want to root and download non market apps. After several days, countless hours and trial and error, this is my little write up on how I rooted a Motorolla Droid running 2.2.1 Build # FRG83D.
z4root no longer works and neither does the ability to download non market apps with 2.2.1. This is the easiest way to do it although there are other longer processes to root your phone which may have not been used on a 2.2.1 Moto Droid. I did a factory reset before I started but that is optional, let's begin.
*** Disclaimer ***
Please make a Nandroid or backup before this just incase.
1. Go to Motorolla's site and downloaded the Motorola 4.8.0 Driver with MotoConnect here. This program automatically downloads the driver your computer needs. This is a MUST. Lots of websites’ and write-ups forget or are vague on this easy step and it makes for a headache. Once downloaded, click on “Update Drivers” and click start. (You can download the driver file and wait for your Hardware Manager to pop up and go that route or just take the easy way and do this)
2. Download the latest version of Superoneclick and follow its directions on how to install it, you can find it here.
3. Connect your phone with your PC via USB. Make sure that USB debugging is ON. I removed my SD card to be on the safe side but if you choose not to, make sure you do not mount the SD card.
4. Open the Superoneclick program after un-zipping it, in Administrator mode. Follow the directions, there is even a video on how to do it. After your phone is rooted, click on " Allow non market apps ". Superuser should now be installed on your phone in your app's list.
*** The newest version of Superoneclick install BusyBox along with Superuser. Open your app drawer and look for these two. If both are there, you are done! If not, continue to step #5. ***
5. Disconnect your phone from your computer and restart your phone. It's not needed but, it's best to start with a fresh restart.
6. Go into your market from your phone, download Busybox ( free app ) and run it. Once installed, make sure within the app it states that your phone is rooted and the latest version of Busybox is displayed.
7. Restart your phone, this step is a must.
Your phone now has root access. You can download non market apps as well. I use Titanium Backup to remove bloat and such but you can use your favorite file manager.
Why the OTA 2.2.1 made things disfunctional, I don't know but this is my little solution and hope it helps.
I am going to give this a nice healthy bump since I have seen a couple Root confusion threads. I will be more then happy to answer any questions.
THANKS
Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Working on a Droid 1 for the first time. This is just the info I needed! Thank you sir!
Not a problem! I actually find that a stock ROMed, rooted and cleaned up Droid 1 is just as quick as the ROMs available to download if not quicker.
Thanks!
Hi,
Wanted to say thanks! Your write up was concise, straightforward and easy to understand... The app worked just like it said it would and rooted my Droid (the original) 2.2.1 FRG83D like a charm!
The Tutorial was a god send as that clarified what to expect and how to react if something went "brown & lumpy".
Thanks and now off to make a backup before learning the other fun stuff!
Tried this, downloaded the driver PC sees the phone, check
DL and run superone click, Check
no busybox, download and install, says rooted, check
here's the problem, can't get into recovery can't do a nand before or after rooting. seems recovery can't see the sdcrad.
I tried to root my Droid 1 (2.2.1 FR83d) with super one click. Everything seemed to work. I got super user access, TI backup runs (mostly)
From Rom manager I installed Clockwork it said everything work but no recovery mode access (yellow triangle) After reading up here it was suggested to flash SPrecovery and then back to clockwork so I did that bot SP and clock work appeared to run fine but still no recovery mode.
Setcpu seems to be working superuser is working but I cannot make a backup of the phone (nand, ROM manager recovery both fail) TI can't uninstall factory apps, and dose not make a complete backup just apps and restores dose not do a complete restore.
It seems I have half a rooted phone. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just rooted my OG Droid. Thanks for the guide!
Edit: Just noticed that BusyBox didn't install with SuperOneClick, and that it is failing to install with the BusyBox installer app.
Edit: Okay, BusyBox installed. Backup created, ready for some ROMs!

For some reason my SU settings didn't pop up, and that caused the install to fail. The 2nd time around, it asked me for permission and it worked.
K I need help please. I used the rs4 lite guide to root the wife's phone ,that was successful, installed rom manager and did the clock mod flash now I can't get recovery, none , I installed busy box and still nothing lol, help I was gonna put cyan 7 on
I figured it out lol, just had to search the forums a bit more , running cyanogen 7 and is a sweet rom . Sry for being a noob . Thanks to all who came up the Rome and cracks y'all rock
Great walk through. Some of you might need another driver (ADB) for XP. They won't let me post the link but it's at Alldroid.
Worked flawlessly on my new 2.2.1 Droid 1, thanks!
Thank you very much for the post, helped me a lot for my rooting Droid / Roi as it is Verizon but I have with Iusacell in Mexico
This thread should be pinned.
My computer says your superoneclick is infected with a virus. Bummer for all the peeps that downloaded it already.......
Hey All,
This is going to be somewhat on and off topic.
I have jumped into the world of Android with both feet in the last few weeks.
So far I have obtained:
A Color nook which I have rooted using autonooter 3.0.0 running stock OS and also run Honeycomb off my SD card (until the real version comes out)
A Moto Backflip which I have rooted using rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin and is now running Unofficial CyanogenMod v6.1.2 (Froyo 2.2.1)
And Now I just bought a Droid with a dead battery, 16GB SDcard and a bad micro USB port for $25! (figured at $25 for a 16GB card it was worth the risk) I was able to "jump start" the battery and got it to power on. Its currently running 2.2.1 with build number FRG83D and is not rooted. Looks like the digitizer has a dead swath right down the middle.
Anyway, I can fix both things for <$30, so at $55 I still think I got a deal. Not too mention the fun of repairing and hacking it!
So my question:
I plan to use it for a little while before spending $$$ and making the repairs. But w/o a USB connector it does not seem that I can root my version.
Do I have any other options? keep in mind the current lack of ability to push things with ADB.
Super fast and easy. thank you so much!

Please help! How regain Root w/unlocked phone with a broken microUSB port?

So for the past year I've had a grand ol' time playing with assorted ROMs and now I've run into a problem I can't fix. First, I'm 95% certain the microUSB on the bottom of my N1 is shot. It will still charge the phone, but cannot connect via Windows/ADB/Superboot or anything. I've tried different cables, different computers, different USB ports and different OSs... still cannot get any computer to recognize device. I'm not paying $200 for HTC to fix this (broken USB ports are not covered)... so here's where I stand:
I installed the Clockwork RomManager to try to DL and install ROMs more easily. It didn't work, it was unable to install anything, and it screwed up my original Amon_RA recovery. So then both means of flashing new ROMs were totally dead. Reluctantly, with no other choice (that I knew of) I reverted back to stock recovery and stock FRG83.
With the Stock ROM I lost Root privileges. And with the stock recovery program (the one with blue writing) I am entirely unable to flash ANY of the common rooted ROMs. I renamed a whole bunch (Cyanogen, Enomther, Rodriguez etc.) to the correct update.zip, but the stock recovery image refuses to flash any of them. It always fails on the Verification stage.
So I can't flash a rooted ROM via the stock recovery program, and I can't use ADB/Superboot/Fastboot to root the device via USB. How can I regain root? Are there any rooted ROMs that are certain to work with the stock recovery image program? Any other ways?
Since all my data is backed up with Titanium, I really need Root to get my life back! Thanks for any ideas!
If you're still on FRG83 (and not FRG83D), you may still be able to root on-device using Visionary, but I'm not sure which version of Visionary to counsel you to try.
If your USB port is broken, how are you charging it?
Which HBOOT version do you have? If none of the on-device methods are working, could you try the PASSIMG for FRF91 and roll back? Universal AndRoot and z4root should work on that build. From there if you want to re-upgrade and keep root, you'll need to take the pre-rooted update.zip format for custom recovery rather than the OTA.
Doesn't sound like it's broken... Weird. And you're 100% sure you have the drivers and everything installed on the computer?
Hi cmstlistand thanks for your advice.
I am now on FRG83D. I looked for Visionary in the market but didn't see it there.
The strange thing about the broken USB is that I'm still able to charge through it without any problems. This is why I'm only 95% sure it's broken... seems very odd that the wires for charging would still be making contact while the others wouldn't. (Please see in my OP all the things I've tried to get it to connect to a computer... certainly open to new ideas if I've missed any.)
I just checked and my HBOOT is version 0.35.0017. I'd be willing to "try the PASSIMG for FRF91" as you suggest. Would I just find the stock FRF91 and rename it PASSIMG and hold down volume down while powering on? Does that sound like my best option?
Thanks again!

Sadly, no. I'd say I'm 95% certain...
The thing is I've tried to connect on my desktop PC with W7 64-bit, my XP laptop and another PC with Linux (Ubuntu and Kubuntu) all to no avail.
Here's what I've done on my main PC (Win7 64bit) to try and connect the N1 (which, btw, connected just fine a few months ago, albeit to a different W7 install). The problem might still be in here, and not in the hardware, so I'm open to any ideas.
1. Whenever I connect I get the "USB Device not Recognized" alert in the taskbar.Clicking on that alert yields no actionable information.
2. The Device Manager shows the exclamation mark by unidentified USB device. Uninstalling, Disabling and attempting to manually update the driver from within the Device Manager all have no effect. Windows says I already have the most current drivers.
3. Tried the USBDeview program. It's supposed to "show all hidden and previously installed usb drivers on your computer." It shows nothing related to HTC or Nexus or Google.
4. I tried manually installing the USB drivers from here.
5. I installed & uninstalled & reinstalled the Android SDK thinking that might fix the USB issue. It didn't.
6. Tried running W7 in Safe Mode and without firewall/anti-virus.
7. Tried three different cables on all of the USB ports on my PC.
All throughout... it's always "USB Device not Recognized"
There should be some PASSIMG files you can try at Shipped ROMs. Usually it's a ZIP inside of another ZIP, so you have to extract the inner file first and rename it PASSIMG.zip.
Visionary is not on the Market anymore, nor are most other rooting apps. You'll have to search for them on the web. So far I don't know of any apps that root FRG83D on-device.
Install pdanet on your pc, and try again. It's an easy way to update the drivers.
The sdk has changed with the gingerbread release, and you have to reload the drivers, etc...

I'd actually tried that before and forgot to mention it. So I just tried it again and no dice. At the point where you plug in your phone, I get the Device Not Recognized immediately in the taskbar. In Device Manager, there is no "Android Devices" category.

I tried the FRF81 from that site and yes it was a zip inside a zip. Renamed it to PASSIMG... but the installation failed at the verification stage.
Thanks for everyone's help so far. I'm totally at a loss with this thing. I don't even know if this is a software or hardware issue. All I know is that I'm dangerously close to driving a railroad spike through the screen.
Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!

If a passimg isn't working it's possible your on FRG33 or something else that doesn't like them. Just use visionary to root like suggested it's been taken down from the market so you'll have to find it here

Visionary does not work on FRG83D, which is what the OP has. Thus my suggestion to try downgrading.
If you're on the newer HBOOT, try the KT_KR release of FRF91 (rootable with Universal Androot or z4root), or try FRG33 (rootable with Visionary). Both are available as PASSIMG files.
That's correct I have FRG83D so Visionary will not work.
Thanks for the suggestions Cmstlist.
Any advice on where to find the KT_KR release of FRF91? I'm searching as we speak, but not finding much...
EDIT: Never mind, just found it here Link. Downloading it now, I'll report back soon.
Thanks Again.
Ok I just DLd KT_KR release of FRF91, renamed it to PASSIMG, copied to root of SD card, rebooted holding volume down. Phone finds and starts to load PASSIMG but then I get the "Main Version is Older! Update fail!" error.
I'll look for and try the FRG33 PASSIMG next, but I'm pretty certain I'll get the same error.
Ok just tried FRG33 I found HERE.
It didn't work, but it didn't work in a different way.
HBOOT finds PASSIMG.zip and loads it (blue bar at top right). After loading it says (Checking... PASSIMG.zip) Then it stays there for a few seconds, and then just jumps back to the original HBOOT screen. There's no error message.
I guess where I'm confused now is that I currently have the newest version (FRG83D) installed. So won't all other PASSIMG files be older and therefore result in one of the above errors?
EDIT: Just thought of something else. For both of the above files I needed to rename them myself to PASSIMG. They were originally named Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip and PASSIMG_Passion_KT_KR_2.15.1010.2_FRF91_release_signed.zip. I was correct in needing to rename them, right? Just want to make sure...
Yes you'd be correct to extract and rename them.
Usually the main version error relates to HBOOT and not the OS version itself, which is why I was hoping FRG33 would work for you.

I see. Thanks for the info.
Still looking for any new ideas to try if anyone has them.
Is there any way I could just revert the phone back to a much earlier build, like ERExx ? Or any way to erase everything, but retain the unlocked state, and then load up a differrent build, one that's software rootable?
Or is it likely that I'm just grasping at straws here?
Rolling back to a much older built requires a modification to the misc partition to trick the HBOOT check... which you can only accomplish either with root, or over USB via fastboot.
Rooting FRG83D requires adb USB over USB. UNLESS... can you adapt the rageagainstthecage instructions to run them by typing or pasting meticulously into Terminal Emulator? Maybe that could root it.

Hmmm, good idea but I don't think anything involving a terminal emulator is likely to work, at least not with my skill set. I've already tried one other method that relied on terminal, and it failed because I couldn't get SU. Without root, I couldn't get super user permissions, without those, terminal was useless.
I just got off the phone with the insurance company (Asurion). I filed the claim and am now waiting to hear back what my options will be. The guy thought that since the N1 is no longer available, I'd be given a choice between a G2, a Vibrant or a Mytouch (not sure if 3g or4g model). And if I don't want any of those, then I'll just keep my N1.
So, the clock is ticking down! ANY ideas whatsoever are greatly appreciated! I'd much rather keep my N1...

Oops I pressed thanks instead of quote =)
What I was suggesting is that you try looking at the manual instructions for rageagainstthecage and adapting them to Terminal Emulator. Those instructions don't require you to already have root - they *give* you root. But now that I read them over, it seems there's also some adb start/stop/etc commands that I'm not sure you can replicate in Terminal emulator. Back to the drawing board...
If Asurion is willing to give you an MT4G or G2, I say go for it.
Just on a total whim... try booting up your phone without the SD card, or with a different one... does it still fail to recognize over USB?

Ha ha you had me all excited there... first chance to try something new! Alas, no luck. Used the original SD card and tried again without one; still got the exact same Device Not Recognized.
I talked to another rep and they alluded that the MT4G was not going to be an option, but that the 3G probably would. The3G seems inferior, though.
You think the G2 would be a fair trade? How about the HD2 or the Vibrant? Any others come to mind?
Since I'll need to pay a $130 deductible (not to mention the $5 I've been spending every month for the last year) I want to make very, very certain that my new phone is not inferior to my beloved N1.
Thanks again; you've been very generous with the ideas!

[Q] Cannot figure out how to root phone AAAARRRGGG!

OK. I started out this adventure to root my phone because I want to use it as a wifi hotspot for my Ipad and not pay AT&T $50/month for that "privelage." I can't figure it out!!!
Phone Info. - Samsung Captivate with Froyo kb2 build. It has the 2.1 adroid when I got it then I updated to 2.2 through the Keis program when it was available.
Before anyone starts with "read and search" lecture, I'll tell you that I've been on this site for a combined 9 hours reading and searching and nothing seems to work. I've tried one-click root programs, I've installed a rooted version of my stock ROM, Ive downloaded more apps, files, or software programs than I can remember. I know how to get the phone into download mode and I know how to boot into recovery mode, but nothing works. Everything seems to come back to the 3e Recovery I have because when I think I am almost there, I get a failed signature error.
I tried the 3e Recovery Mod and that didn't seem to do anything. Is anyone out there willing to help me through this? I am not a programmer, and I don't have any android experience whatsoever, but I can follow direction and am willing to learn. Everytime I find a new thread I seem to get more confused because I'm unclear on the jargon being used, or the thread is on a different ROM or phone so I don't know if it will work. I know "brick" is a bad thing so I don't want to do that.
I any of the experts had my phone what would you do? Do you need more information from me? Also, once I get this figured out, I'de love some recomendation on a better, faster ROM to install.
ANY HELP WOLD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED. Sorry for the frustration.
When I was on the Official Froyo 2.2 the first thing I used to successfully get root was this... View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
This version was the only one at the time that would work. Extract it and run the SuperOneClick application. Be sure to have the usb debugging on.-- Menu /Settings /Applications /Development /then check the USB debugging.
Hmmmm.....very odd. Froyo is super easy.
Do you have Super User showing up in the apps drawer?
AND DON'T USE KIES ANY MORE FOR UPDATING !! YOU CAN BE IN FOR NASTY SURPRISES.
Been there. I'll try it again, but I think it still can't get around the 3e verification stuff. I'll let you know.
No SuperUser as of yet. I guess that is the point. Once I get rooted, I should get SuperUser status.

That requires a custom kernel

After u try the SuperOneClick from my previous post, reboot ur phone and then see what u have.
After nearly 9 hours of trying...I have cracked this thing. Turn out there were two threads about the 3e recovery mod. I tried the manual thread with no success. I just found this one that has a one click script to do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Once I did that, I used Captivate One Click Root and presto....I now have SuperUser permissions. Sweet.
Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions. I'm sure I'll have more about ROMs and such.
^ Good deal. Glad u got it.
I figured I would be back.
Anyone have a link to a clear explaination on how to CID unlock the Captivate? A video would be fantastic, but I know how that goes. Also, is there a way to tell if it is unlocked or not?
Thanks

If you want to go with this - BACK UP YOUR nv_data.bin TO YOUR COMPUTER as soon as you can. DON'T LEAVE IT ONLY ON THE PHONE !!!!
Or have you heard of Samsung Tool v10.7...... here: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f45...orld-just-one-more-revolution-update-1327536/
Register and go to "Download Area"
Jesus....tht will have to wait. That looks pretty complicated..... lol
I'll see what I can do later this week.
Thanks!

I tried that early on because it looked so easy. All I get is "Sorry, no codes found unknown error" Is there a way to tell if I'm CID unlocked or not? I haven't done that yet that I know of. I did click the unlock button is Super One Click, but it did nothing. By that I mean the program, nor the phone seemed like anything happened. Early on in this process I found the completly rooted version of my stock Froyo 2.2 and installed that on my phone thinking that it would root the phone. Later realized it doesn't work like that. How do I check the CID lock? I'de like to try one of these cool ROM's I keep reading about.
unless you are planning on running the captivate on another carrier, you dont need to unlock it.
I was under the impression that I needed to CID unlock the phone to flash any ROM not produced or signed by the carrier. I thought SIM unlock was what allowed you to take the phone to another carrier?
As you can see, I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm slowly learning.

CID unlocks do not apply to Samsung phones.
once you have a kernel that has CWM built into it, you can start flashing. nothing else required. you dont even need root if you arent planning on using something like titanium backup before you flash.
Cool.
So any recomendations on my first custom ROM install?
I tried installing a custum boot animation last night and had no luck. I used CWM to flash the file I downloaded, but no change. I tried to copy a new customanimation.zip (I think that's what it's called I'm going from memory here) but I don't have RW access to the System folder. I tried using CWM to mount system and then fix permissions through recovery mode, but that doesn't do it. I'm using Droid Explorer to copy the file but it won't copy. There is a customamination.zip file in system/media so I tried to rename it .zp and it won't take. I assume that is a permissions thing.
I guess I'll try Root Exploer from the market. People seem to be having luck with that.
you cant use a bootanimation.zip on a stock kernel. It just be enabled in a custom kernel.
Go read some more bro. A LOT MORE.
OK. so it looks like I downloaded a custom animation zip file, but I need to flash a kernel that allows me to use the anmation. I ran across a post about that so I can find it.
Was was confusing to me was the uploader of the animation called it "flashable" so I thought that was the kernel and all, but I'm now guessing that by flashing it it simply installed it into the system/media folder for me???
Still looking for any suggestions for my first ROM.

[Q] From 2.3.3 to 4.2, no usb connection

Hello, I've got a Galaxy S, and it works great apart from the usb port. My pc (and others too) isn't able to recognise it. I mean, it detects the phone connected but I can't go further... Already tried with many versions of samsung drivers, kies too, windows 8, 7, xp... It seems that usb port is fault.
So the question is, since there's the 3a recovery on it, is there any way to root, and install CWM on it, without using a pc?
Or am I stuck on 2.3.3?
I've already tried zroot and similars... They just don't work.
Sorry for my English, and thanks to everyone
Have you tried using the USB drivers in this forum?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk HD
enable usb debugging
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Thanks for your replies... Yes I've already tried driver, three different versions, with usb debug enabled and disabled... But the result is the same. :/
edit:
When I connect the phone to my pc, I can hear a sound but there're no notification about usb connection.
It's probably hardware-related...
So I was wondering if there's a way to do everything on the phone, without a pc
Mobile ODIN?
installed from external sd?

yea I saw that... But it requires a rooted phone, and mine isn't... And for rooting I need to use odin... It's a vicious circle :|

You try this one? it works for me with a 2.3. rom that i flashed, and i cant'n conect usb
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834428
Yes, I tried exactly that. I guess it hasn't worked because of the 3e recovery, which doesn't allow to flash unsigned zips...
When I try to root the phone through that app, it stucks and then the app crashes.
searching the web... one idea

Download an update of GB from www.sammobile.com/firmwares, I think it may be signed by manufacturer, and install update zip from recovery. Maybe it solve 3e hell.
waiting news...
Thank you very much! I'll try it today and post here the results
edit:
I got an error: "E:Short write of /tmp/sideload/package.zip (No space left on device)
But, I have wiped everything and there are GBs of free space... Now I'm looking for an eventual solution for this
good luck!!

I think you have to find how to "downgrade 3e recovery to 2e" without usb (odin or haid..)
take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
or search on google "downgrade 3e recovery to 2e"
After some days of research, I'm about to give this up...
The last option was downgrading to 2e recovery. No usb working, no root, 3e recovery doesn't let me flash anything.
I haven't found any official/certified/signed firmware released by Samsung which works on 3e recovery, and OTA update doesn't find anything.
Firmwares from sammobile aren't signed, I've tried, they don't work.
Apparently there is no solution apart from getting the usb port fixed, if I want to mod the phone.
Anyway, thank you all!
Unbelievable, but finally I've solved everything
I've just spent an hour scratching the microusb port on the phone, again and again, and now I'm running cwm and rooted 2.3.6
Again, thank you all
Sometimes it is really unbelievable
Small reason and great effect :good:
But it`s perfect when it not works ,fine !!!
So now you can go through to 4.2.2
