Mainly to use in the car so I can have one cable for both power and aux out.
They work OK but there is a low level interference noise when the phone is charging. If you reduce the charging current using stweaks (I am using perseus kernel) to 500mA the noise reduces quite a lot.
I have another cable on order from another supplier, I'll see if that is better shielded on the aux side to keep out noise.
Edit: just been for a drive and the sound quality is fantastic compared with bluetooth with the charger off. The noise is very noticable when a track has a low volume. Going to try some tweaks or maybe a ferrite core on the cable to see if I can improve it.
The other idea was to mhl instead and get a hdmi to av composite converter as my head unit has a 7" pop out screen so I can mirror the screen on my phone

You can make your life a lot easier by getting this for $1 from Monoprice. Its a matching white Type A male to micro-usb Type B cable, gold plated, with 28/24AWG data/power wires, and ferrite core filter. Just cut off micro-usb end along with ferrite code and splice it with your cable. I assume ferrite bead core isolates and filters power wires only considering this is 24AWG cable to handle 3.5A.

exactly what i've been looking for! do you have link to the other cable you purchased?
maybe something like this http://www.amazon.com/PAC-SNI-1-3-5...290739&sr=1-4&keywords=aux+cable+noise+filter for the ground noise?

Any updates on this? Can you test if cm10.1 based ROMs have USB audio out as well?

Ground loop isolator looks interesting, if thats what the cause is.
I tried a ferrite and it did not help, although I attached it to the micro end not the USB A end, might try moving it.
I got a HDMI to composite converter for the car which has the added bonus that I can mirror my screen on the 7" screen on the head unit listen to music, play movies, have the nav up there etc. Initial testing shows the audio quality is OK, I'll have to make some more comparisons to judge it properly

FWIW, I bought a black one and a white one. Theory was since they came from different sellers they may be different cables other than color. Well, theyre both the same. I set it up in my car and I have beautiful audio. The volume level is proper, no hisses or crackles, just great. Charging might have taken a minor hit, but it still charges with the screen on at full brightness so it's good enough! Screw bt audio. Until head units start coming with Apt-X, regular a2dp is complete garbage.

Same as the OP I believe. There is only one cable like this on ebay advertised for our phones, it only works with the Perseus kernel too...

I bought two of these cables(black) from ebay for cheap. One of them was totally defective as it wouldn't even fit the note II's port but the other one works just fine. Great audio(totally dependent on your setup) and fast charging with my 4.2 amp dual usb charger and it's got that nice tight fit that makes everyone happy. It doesnt work with the jelly bean or later kernels so you MUST install perseus kernel. It's pretty awesome having to plug in only one cable. No more crappy wireless audio for me :victory:

Devil kernel as well as Trinity work too

Has anyone tried it on a CM/AOSP based ROM?

Yeah, no worky...

How does this manage to work...? I wouldn't think there would be enough pins on the MicroUSB port...

Theres 11 pins, 5 of them are regular USB and there is another row of 6 which are proprietry and do hdmi, audio out etc.

But the cable appears to only use the 5 normal ones...

The sgs2 which had a 5 pin port was also capable of it. The official Samsung car dock took advantage of it.

Looking for some clarification, does that mean that a stock Note II, such as a Verizon model, that's gotten its regular OTA updates to 4.1.1 won't work with this cable? Or will it not work with any USB -> audio out cable/dock/etc.?

To clarify- Samsung firmware Jelly Bean and above lost car dock mode in favor or smart dock mode. The only way to make this cable work is with a custom kernel that enables car dock mode in TouchWiz.
Or, buy a iBOLT cable that enables smart dock mode on any JB firmware. I haven't measured mine yet to find out what the resistances are to enable it. There is some more info on this type of stuff in the S3 forums if you wanted to make one.

Ground loop isolator takes care of the engine noise / charging interference / noise. Got mine at Radio Shack for $9.

sorry to revive old thread but i got the cable from amazon through a seller named EZCart out of north carolina and got it all hooked up. Sound works great and i didn't even need a ground loop isolator or a ferrite core.Only issue is that I can't get the phone audio to play through the car speakers, i have searchhed numerous forums and the closest thing i found was that turning off the speaker should send the audio to the car but that still didn't work, has anyone been able to get phone call audio to play through the usb if so how? Thanks
Edit: I'm running Perseus Kernel on Jelly Beans 18

Making tv out cable

Has anyone else made a tv out cable? I made one and had inference from the exposed wires electrical field with each other but used layers of different types of tape to get rid of distortion when playing audio and video. Has anyone else tried some other less tacky way?
(moderators sorry if wrong topic)

You can buy one that will work for about $10.
You just have to switch the right audio and video. No hacking required.
I have an Electrohome cable. Very thick and good quality.
Agree with above post. I got 2 off amazon for less than a dollar apeice. Search Ipod touch video cables. Same thing we need.
I know but wanted to make my own I must be alone on that cause couldn't find how to make one so I looked at picture of one from ebay and figured out how no help from GOOGLE™

Fyi, here's the info on the pinout of the cable (quoted below):

Sorry, I completely missed the part where you said i9000 has pins 3 and 4 swapped compared to Captivate. It's strange, but quite possible that pinout on i9000 and Captivate is different.
From the accounts I've read on this forum and according to pinouts.ru / pinoutsguide.com i9000 has the following pinout:
|----|-----|-----|-----\
|----|-----|-----|-----/
_4____3____2___1
1 - white (left audio channel)
2 - red (right audio channel)
3 - yellow (video)
4 - shield (ground)
According to your diagram Captivate has the following pinout:
1 - white (left audio channel)
2 - red (right audio channel)
3 - shield (ground)
4 - yellow (video)
This seems to be consistent with my experience using Captivate and TV-out cable from WD TV Live. I tested it just now and it has the following pinout:
1 - yellow (video)
2 - white (left audio channel)
3 - red (right audio channel)
4 - shield (ground)
Using this cable with Captivate I get scrambled image no mater which plug (red/white/yellow) I use, which makes sense if Captivate sends video signal to pin 4, the shield of all three plugs instead of the center conductor of just one. The conclusion I can make from this is that Nokia's CA-75U will not work for my Captivate.

The issue I've ran into so far is the cable I bought, just a generic cable, has pins 3 and 4 swapped, and if you get a cable like that there's no way to fix it.
So it would work on the i9000 according to the quote above, but it doesn't work in the captivate.
The video is sent out over ground in this case, and therefore useless.
How has everyone insuring they get a cable that works with the captivate?
heres the thing i really dont get. a 4 segment 1/8 inch plug, is pretty much only used for these type of cables. Normal headphone jacks only have 3 segments.
where did the OP get one to hack? or did he mod a 3 segment headphone jack and is only getting one channel audio? and the other audio... shorting to video in the jack?
and ya kinda not worth hacking together considering ebay...

A stereo headset with a mic uses a 4 segment plug. I ordered a generic camcorder output cable from amazon for $3.09 that works on my captivate. just have to swap the the right audio with the video

I haven't looked hard to find one but was curious if they are available to buy also.
The only reason I can see for making one is that you can build a higher quality cable then you can buy.
http://electronics.shop.ebay.com/A-...era_Cables_Cords&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282
Any of these will work by swapping the a/v around. it's the camcorder cables you are after.
I bought the electrohome one because the colours on the barrels for the rcas are changeable. When I got the correct barrels, I just swapped the colours to match.
I can't find them on ebay. Check your local electronics stores. It was $10.00, if you care about the colours matching.
This may also be an alternative to those wanting to use High Quality cables:

can anyone explain why the video signal comes through partially scrambled?
1: It it scrambled when the pinout order is wrong?
2: or is the scramble from some other problem?
3: when the pin order is wrong is there just no signal/no scramble?
Reason I am wondering is I have a cable I am trying, and have tried on a couple of older TV's and only got a scrambled video. Should I try with newer TV's or is the cable just flat out wrong for the captivate... It's a Samsung branded cable. :-(

Partially scrambled is a bad cable. If the pinout is wrong you would not get a video signal at all.
Try just plugging in the barrel that works for video and wiggling the 3.5mm connector in the captivate and see if it clears up.
BUT your best bet is getting another cable.

Shoot.
I'm pissed because I paid for the Samsung cable expecting it to be a less risky proposition than ebay-roulette... (I should have just bought 3 from ebay for the same price...)
thanks for the info..
Actually, you can sometimes get a "scrambled" image if the pin order is wrong. Not sure what others see when their image is scrambled, but on one cable I have you will get something on the screen, basically a jagged line down the middle of the screen, you can tell its an image coming from the phone because it will change color if you change what is on the phone screen. I should add that I could only see the "scrambled" image on an old crt, on my lcd it just would say no signal.
If you want to check if pins 3 and 4 are swapped you need to switch the outside of the video lead to the inside and inside to outside. I did this and saw a "perfect"/ not scrambled image. Now I know for sure that cable won't work properly, and the TV out function works just fine.

Because out the pinout posted above I was wary of buying an i9000 cable. Pretty weird/stupid for samsung to change the pinout between captivate and i9000.

Yea so dell was super lame with not including hdmi/usb on the device itself, there's PLENTY of room to fit the connectors comfortably.
If it wasnt for the fact that the s10 uses a higher voltage to charge, everything done on the new connector could be accomplished on the s5/s7 pdmi-like connector. Even then the charging part is unnesscerry, as all other 10.1" tabs can charge fine though high-capacity usb chargers.
It features a HDMI connector, a USB-A female port, and a dock connector pass though to charge. It costs ¥299, which is approx $47 USD, which is really expensive for something that coulda been built into the device. But I assume most buyers knew this beforehand before buying.
Honeycomb should fully support HDMI/USB out of the box, so there shouldnt be anything to configure. Hopefully it will operate without requiring external power, which is almost forgivable since if you're going to attach it to a tv one extra box wont be a huge deal.
I am considering buying one myself since I'm in it for the long haul, but it's hard to overlook how lame dell was with this. I cant offer much advice to anyone else interested in importing, I'm going to go though my friend same as when my s10 was imported.
I do not believe there are any other accessories planned, the only thing missing vs the pdmi-like connector on the s5/7 is line out, which the s10 may not even support.
A lot of this criticism is also valid for the s7 though, it requires the hdmi dock to do anything, even though it could have been fitted with a microhdmi connector or usb host connector. The multimedia dock's launch MSRP was about $50 also, so they're both on par with pricing of additional connectivity.

I think that the S7 also provides a higher charge than normal USB. EDIT: That is why one cannot use it and charge from a computer. I think the S7 charger is 2mA.
The s7 can charge from [email protected] 500mA-2000mA, though only meaningfully at 1000-2000mA, or 2.5-10W.
the s10 charges at 19v @ 1580mA or 30W.
I've seen the s7 'charge' from 500mA while the screen is off, it just takes 10 or so hours to do so

Sorry I'm getting a friend to have one brought back on carry-on, they'll be leaving china in a couple days and it simply wouldnt be possible to order an extra before they depart.
Just as much, bringing multiples might look suspicious, but a single can easily be explained away.
If the timing wasnt so perfect I really dont know when i'd be able to get mine myself

Ok. Thanks. I will try to find some other way. Only wish Dell could have designed the adapter without the short cable like this...

The dell one has 2 ports and a passthough, it would really work out unless you wanted to get 2 seperate ones.
Personally it seems about right the way it is since it makes a good docking station setup if you get a good stand. If it was vertically down it'd be pretty difficult to have it mounted upright unless you got a very tall stand

Good point. Hope you will do a review once yours arrived. Cheers
Just recieved mine today, it's pretty great (if you ignore the fact it should have been built into the s10.
It's smaller then the picture implies, it's only slightly wider then the dock connector itself. It adds very little bulk to your kit if you carry it (in a bag or so) with your s10
W1orks exactly like you'd expect, the s10 supports usb hubs too.
Currently typing this on my tv with my s10 hooked up to it, have a usb keyboard and mouse and am currently charging my s5 off the s10 which itself is also charging off the wall.
Dell could easily make a transformer type dock for the s10 if they were inclined to. The fact that all the ports are on the bottom middle makes it extremely easy to hack together.
Only issue is that the charger is 19V which is a lot to ask from a battery.
Mini Review
As previously stated, the available ports on it are:
HDMI out
USB in
Power passthrough
HDMI Out
Works just as expected on any tegra2 device(?). It mirrors everything you see on the screen and shows it on the tv. You cant turn the tab screen off without losing your picture, but this is a limitation of the t2 itself and not the s10. (exact same thing happens on the s7)
Unfortunately some apps are not single touch friendly, such as the maps app on HC devices, you must use the screen to zoom in and out, but this is a limitation of apps and not related.
USB in
Works pretty great, plugged in a usb hub and a usb keyboard and mouse and they all worked fine. Even plugged in my S5 to charge and it works, though it's very slow as it's very underpowered. (not really surprising)
I put my s5 in usb mode and the s10 wouldnt mount. Afterwards it apparently completely corrupted my card[!]. Fortunately it had nothing irreplacable, but I dont know yet if this was a one off thing or consistant.
Power passthrough
Does exactly what it looks like it does, lets you also charge it while in use.
Overall
The box itself is pretty small, it's only slightly wider then the dock connector. The press shots dont really do it justice to how small it feels. The thing is also very light as it seems to not actually contain anything, it's merely a pass though connector.
Conclusion:
Pros:
Small
Light
Supports usb hubs
Easy way to organize cables/acts as a docking station
Cons:
Bit pricy for just a dumb passthough box
Corrupted my memory card[!](?)
Should be bundled with all new s10s and not seperate
Random trivia: PEGATRON (the manufacturer of the S10 for dell) was spun off from asustek along with asus. The Transformer was made by asus. The S10 essentially has capability of it's own version of a transformer dock. The dock connector is in the right location and exposes the needed pins for a transformer type dock to be made, were it not for the way the s10 charges. Unfortunately it is unlikely for a transformer type dock to ever be made.

What does this mean exactly?
Although the official Nexus page says there's a speaker in the back, we clearly see a pair of drivers.
Drivers? No Speaker?

I'm not sure. They're referring to the two black rectangular mesh/screen objects towards the bottom. I'm guessing they mean a type of electrostatic transducer?
Well that's it then, no more speculation regarding MHL.
No sight of any MHL chip/transmitter on the motherboard, and the demo unit on stage at Google I/O was indeed a custom one that either uses micro USB to VGA adapter or Nexus Q to mirror its screen.
Edit: Wait, but there is a micro USB to HDMI cable, I'm confused
Doesn't it require hardware support for MHL to work.
Nice to know it includes DDR3 RAM, apparatly the same model found in the 'MacBook Pro with Retina Display'.

Initially, the Nexus 7 was criticized for its lack of HDMI output. However, the included micro USB-to-HDMI cable solves that problem.

Thanks for sharing, I've been waiting for someone to break the Nexus 7 down.

That's why I'm confused. How does it work without any MHL transmitter on board?
How come no other reviews mentioned the inclusion of this micro USB to HDMI cable, both the AnandTech and Engadget reviews say N7 do not support MHL. They surely must have been reviewing the same unit given out for I/O attendees. I hope ifixit test if the cable even work, was it a mistake that the cable is included in their box?

Yeah. Why is ifixit the only one who makes note of this. It doesn't make sense.
Yeah it does look promising. Even if it doesnt include a cable in the box, I would hope you will be able to purchase it separately. It still quite funny we dont have any concrete information
That looks like the PC connection cable. Note the regular USB male connector, and what looks like micro-USB male connector on the other end, despite what the HDMI label says.
If this were an adapter, the HDMI connector would normally be female, to be used with regular HDMI male-male cable.

To me it looks like a microusb male connection on one end (to be plugged into the Nexus) and a full size HDMI male connection on the other end (to be plugged into a TV or receiver).

I thought with the dent on its side, it looks more like a micro-USB male connector, and on the other end with HDMI label, it also looks like a HDMI male connector, considering its relative size to the micro-USB end.

You're probably right. Anyway, below is the cable that normally comes with the I/O package. There is no other cable in the unboxing.

What's with the HDMI cable reference in there? Thought it didn't have MHL or anything
Plus the smaller connector with the wide RIM looks like one of the cables you'd plug into the Q
EDIT: I'm not really convinced that it is a HDMI male connector

By stereo speakers, I basically mean there are two drivers (speakers, same thing), one for the right channel audio, and one for the left channel audio.
As a practical matter however, the stereo effect will be nil or negligible because 1) there is almost no stereo separation (distance between speakers), and 2) when held in landscape, both channels will be only coming from one side.

USB OTG Cable host mode while charging anyone try this accessory?

I've searched and never seen an actual 'buyable' product linked on the forums so if this is a dup, I apologize.
Anyone try one of these and see if you can have your Nexus in host mode and charge at the same time?
Is the only option for the female Micro USB port to bring more charge to a usb device plugged in and not to bring charge
to the Nexus itself?
Two scenarios would make this ideal for me:
1.) using my usb xbox controller to play games yet still keeping my tablet charged
2.) using a usb thumb drive to play a movie while still keeping my table charged
I think this would be pretty cool if it worked but I don't know the technical details on if it can be done with our Nexus 7's:

OTG and Charging is mutually exclusive, the OTG cable triggers the USB controller to send power out to a device, not receive power.
the pogo docks on the bottom of the device are also impossible to charge from as the nexus 7 has only been given one charging circuit, and that is the same one that OTG disables.
The only way to achieve something like this would be a physical battery hack where you splice in a charging circuit direct to the battery, without frying the phone maybe some unidirectional resistors, so that it can be simultaneously charged whilst powering the device.
I'm 99% certain of this information, and this is not to say someone might hack a kernel together one day
you might be able to install one of them batteries you can just set it on a charging pad and it will charge

Wrong. https://github.com/teamhacksung/and...mmit/4c1c965b168bc4488ef66889e1c8933bc1b3de46 for an example on Galaxy S2/Note
As to whether the adapter linked is a proper OTG ACA (they're VERY hard to find) and whether the grouper supports OTG ACA is unknown. It's something a kernel developer can probably implement.
Thanks Entropy512, I can see it working on other devices, that gives me hope... I might rig something up myself now, I've wanted to take a cheap usb keyboard plastic leather cover, and build in an extra battery, card reader and usb hub, now this might be theoretically possible

I can confirm that simply splicing a standard OTG cable into the port and plugging in a power cord will not work. I thought I'd utilize the empty socket from where the rear camera was supposed to go, and try to fit the OTG-to-microSD set-up inside of the Nexus. I bought a salvaged USB/headphone port from a damaged Nexus off of Ebay for $1 and the smallest microSD adapter I could find. With the use of a ribbon cable from an old laptop, some trimming, and some REALLY careful soldering I was able to make it work... sorta. Stickmount sees the card and everything runs great, until you plug in a power cord. Then, it disables the microSD adapter, and even though Stickmount says it's there, no files are visible. Also, the Nexus won't charge with this arrangement.
It might work with a different set up, but simply mimicking the OTG cable will not allow a Stickmounted volume and when the charger is plugged in.
(BTW - To make everything fit, I had to use a Dremel to grind away some of the mid-frame area around the rear camera space. It's a tight fit, but keep in mind that until you have a spare mid-frame, like I do, you'll obviously void your warranty.)

The Only Car Charger You Need for the Nexus 7

There are so many threads on car chargers that actually work for the Nexus 7 and yet none of them seem to have reliable answers. Maybe it works, maybe not. Does it do "AC charging"? Is the amperage high enough to keep it running while I use it? Do I have to short Data+ and Data-? Does it work with OEM or aftermarket cables? Is it expensive?
It's enough to make you just want to keep the Nexus in the house. So I'm here to help - just go buy this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0088U4YAG/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_SC_dp_1
Tom Fagerland was kind enough to provide links from Amazon UK, available in both black and white:
White: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PowerGen-Ch...ZY/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1351432753&sr=8-15
Black: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PowerGen-Charger-KeyBoard-Samsung-included/dp/B0088U4YAG/ref=pd_sim_ce_1
It's a 3.1A dual port car charger for $12.99 on Amazon with a full 5/5 review. I just got mine and it's well built, very sturdy (almost OEM quality) and has two USB ports, one for Apple devices "A" and one for non-Apple devices "NA". The "NA" port will charge the Nexus 7 and the "A" port will charge most other non-tablets, including the Galaxy Nexus. It works with the OEM Nexus 7 cable, a Monoprice cable and a Galaxy Nexus cable.
So that's it. Just go buy it and be happy. It will charge quickly if you leave the tablet off but will still charge it if you keep using it.
EDIT 2-11-13: This charger has been charging my Nexus 7 virtually every day (40 mins/day) for over 3 months now with no problems.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you wanting to know some more specifics, here they are. (You don't have to care, honest! Just go buy the thing.)
I did a test with my 7 starting at 40% battery. I did a "worst case scenario" of Wi-Fi on and connected, Bluetooth on, GPS on and using Google Navigation, Spotify streaming and the screen on at 100% brightness throughout charging. I powered the adapter off a variable DC power supply that shows current draw as well as voltage. I used 12.2 VDC to simulate a car's battery. Below is the relevant portion of the battery monitor graph.

It does indeed charge using the "NA" port with no modifications. The power supply showed an average current of 0.50A @ 12 VDC which once converted to 5 VDC is 1.22A not counting for the small loss in the DC-DC converter. It did get as high as 0.62A (1.51A @ 5VDC) but seemed to level out at 0.5A for the vast majority of charge time. (FYI I assume Watt's law applies here when stepping down voltage - feel free to correct me.)
I checked on the progress every 30 mins and here are the results:
00:00 - 40%
00:30 - 48% (+8%)
01:00 - 55% (+7%)
01:30 - 62% (+7%)
02:00 - 68% (+6%)
02:30 - 76% (+8%)
03:00 - 83% (+7%)
This is where I stopped. It seems to be very capable of providing a decent charge while under heavy use. At this point I turned everything off and waited another 30 mins and found it charged another 12% while "idle". At that rate it could charge from empty in around 4 hours. It would take around 7 hours to charge completely if being used heavily, but it's not just "maintaining" a charge or discharging slowly - it's actually gaining a charge.
So there you have it.
Powerful car chargers (2Aand above) usually affect your FM radio reception, how does that one go?

I think the "A" port does not short the two data pins because Apple doesn't like that. Most Android phones don't seem to care either way though. My Galaxy Nexus works with it, I think a friend's SGS3 works as well. A reviewer notes the Kindle products worked as well. The thing to note is that charging non-Apple devices in the "A" port will only charge them at USB speed. Not perfect but it should do the trick.

If you are rooted and have a kernel setting to enable fast charge on USB, you should be able to use the "A" port for full power. Be sure to turn that feature off, though if you want to swap data with PC.

I tried this on computer USB and the notation in Battery Monitor Widget changed from USB plugged to AC plugged when connected to my computer. milliamps went from 479 to 875. Still will see what happens on various chargers. But to get 875mA from computer's USB port seems pretty darn good.
Thanks a lot for sharing this with us! seriously there are many car chargers than would never work due to low amp!!

Thank you for pointing the way about car chargers that work. I have been impressed with this charger doing more than slowing down discharge. Another Option
Hey guys - there is another option that is very high quality -
The Scosche ReVIVE II works very well with the nexus 7 (at the same time as a phone too) with the 2.1A charging port. The only catch I found was that I had to short out the data connections - but I did this with a USB extension cable.
Essentially all you do is cut a USB extension cable, reconnect the power wires and then join the two data wires on the device end. This, for someone who has done some soldering, is a super easy job and takes 5 minutes, as well as making sure you don't ruin a perfectly good micro-USB charger.
The reason for shorting the Data is that some devices wont charge to their full potential (ie. only to 500mA) if they dont have the data wires shorted because the device might be connected to a computer - which wouldn't handle the full 1/2A.
anywho, it's a fantastic, very high quality charger and well worth the price.

Charging Cord
I use either my OEM GS3 or N7 for the NA port. I have a Rocketfish USB charging cord when I have to use the A port. I purchased it from BestBuy a while ago, initially for my BB at the time.
This sounds great.
I have a iPod Nano 6th Gen that I keep plugged in all the time, and a USB cable for my Phone. I modified my existing one so my Galaxy Nexus reads it as AC and charges fast, but my N7 doesn't even see it.
The one posted in the OP sounds like it'd be perfect. I could use the A for my iPod and the NA for both my N7 and GN. Fortunately the N7 doesn't require car charging very often
Sadly, Amazon.ca doesn't sell the charger and Amazon.com won't ship to Canada. Has anyone found a good source for this charger in Canada?
