rooting alone will not, block or stop updates
removing stock apks, and changing other things will
fastest way to fix, flash 890 xml recovery file in rsd lite, wipe data before or after, and try updating again

If you never deleted anything from stock, the easiest way is to change safestrap to non-safe system (or stock, if you are on 3.05) and restart in stock. The update should appear pretty fast.
Again, if you ever debloated stock before installing Safestrap, then the RSD Lite is your best bet.
You would need to root again and reinstall safestrap recovery. Root again with Motofail, because Pete Souza's script no longer works with 5.7.906.

Rooting/Flashing ROM questions

How compareable is flashing roms on the Droid 3 compared to the HTC Eris. I'm tired of the lag and bloat and wish to try some new ROMs. I just don't want brick my phone. Rooting looked simple but I don't understand bootstrap/safestrap. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get bootstrap/safestrap from the internet -- install the app.
Run the app, install recovery.
Turn phone off.
Press m + power.
Scroll to BP Tools -- select it.
You're in custom recovery.
Which is better, bootstrap or safestrap?

Safestrap by far, the rom will install to another partition /preinstall rather that /system. This keeps the VZW rom intact to prevent bricking and still get OTAs easily. It's practically impossible to brick it using Safestrap.
Thanks, I'll be giving this a try!

So root (obviously), install safestrap, then I just boot into recovery via safestrap and flash Liberty 2.0? Just being anal, the more I read the less confident I get. Once I burst my cherry, I should feel better. Lol. Thanks for all the help everyone!

if ur stock 5.6.890, root, install otarootkeeper, install safestrap, open the app, install recovery, boot into recovery (during boot you will hit menu), backup data, toggle safe mode, install ROM, wipe data/cache, reboot
---
check http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/p/android-downloads.html for safestrap and CM7 downloads. also if you are on 5.7.894 you will need to use his patch to run any roms.
Did you mean wipe data/cache THEN install ROM?

most roms either way will work
Rooted, install ota rootkeeper, installed and ran safestrap, rebooted into recovery, tried to turn on safe mode and got error. rebooted and tried to make a back up, got error.
Error occured when attempting to make backup image of /data
Happened both times. Am I royally screwed?
Phone works still but I don't dare flashing a ROM until I get safe mode. Hints?
If im not mistaken, rootkeeper doesnt need to be used unless you are going to install 5.7.894, as it messes with your roms ability to access SU
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
My phone had trouble mounting as R/W when i got a SU update via the superuser app off the market, i unprotected and updated my binary again and it worked fine. Keep OTA Rootkeeper installed, activate it before upgrading to an update that has no root method yet, then after you reinstall SU, and reestablish the symlink in your new update, remove the protection and verify you still have root. Its not necessary for CWM recovery tasks though
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
So if I lose ota rootkeeper, I can create a backup? My problem is I can't create a data backup or switch to safe mode. It gives me an error message that says unable to create backup image of /data. Am I corrupted? My phone still works as far as I know.

Safestrap and bootstrap(I believe) have issues creating a backup of a file that cannot be changed. So yes if you remove it, then you be able to use safestrap correctly.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Removed ota rootkeeper changes still get "Error occurs in creating backup image of /data"
Any other ideas.
Running Verizon 5.6.890 stock blur. Used psouza one click root. Ran debloat script, but I don't think I did it right.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
I tried to run the debloat restore and then make a backup, but still the same error. I noticed in the thread pertaining the debloat script that someone also gets it to run until myverizon.apk messes it.
Making backups and flashing new ROMs was so easy with the Eris. I apologized because I'm such a noob when it comes to Moto Droids and scripting.

[Q] Do I need to use an SBF

I am unable to create a backup using safestrap or switch to safe mode. I keep getting an "Error in creating a backup image of /data."
I have a Verizon Droid 3, running rooted stock 5.6.890. I rooted using psouza one click, installed ota rootkeeper, ran that. Installed safestrap, ran that. Rebooted into recovery, tried to enable safe mode, failed. Tried to backup, failed.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Try turning off safe mode. If you can get to recovery you should be fine.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Lemme clarify. Sbf is only if your phone is stuck on the Dual Core screen. ?

Remove ota rootkeeper. That's what's ruining the backup.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
R an into same problem a few days ago but with tweaked D3 bootstrap, and it took me forever to work around (much weeping and gnashing of teeth.) Are you sure OTA Rootkeeper is the culprit? I can surely live without it if it is that pernicious,
Ota rootkeeper places an unmodifiable backup on your phone, and the app is only useful if you plan on installing updates through the stock recovery. CWM recovery has issues with things it has no control over, especially your SU binary
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
I removed the ota rootkeeper app and still can't get the backup. Did I miss something?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Did you unprotect root before you uninstalled? It doesnt remove it unless you open the app and hit the unprotect button
Droid 1 Rooted (ChevyNo1 0.9MV Kernel, LGB2.6)
Droid 3 Rooted (Stock Kernel, Custom lite De-bloat)
Yes, I removed protection before installing. Still getting same error.

So I haven't bricked it, should I uninstall safestrap, do factory reset, and try to redo root? I just want to use safestrap so I can try some new ROMs and still have my original ROM tucked away.

This should work as long as you haven't removed/froze any of the system apps and its %100 stock in tact. If you have titanium backup just make a backup of your user apps so it'll be easier to restore.
Should, meaning its worth a try and easier/faster than flashing the fastboot files.
I ran psouza debloat script but it's reversible. Right?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
You also meant doing a factory restore, right?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
How do you remove the file ota rootkeeper puts on. I turned off the protection, then uninstalled. Still can't get /data to backup. Or turn on safe mode.

[Question] How to put stock rom back?

How I can back to stock rom?
my model is xt862 i guess (from verizon)
what did you use to flash in the first place? Koush's bootstrap, hashcodes bootstrap or safestrap? Also, youre in portugal, correct? are you sure its a xt862 or is it the xt860?
Fastboot http://goo.gl/g033Z
Isn't there a factory restore option in the boot menu to accomplish something similar? I have to do this soon to accept the upcoming OTA update...

Factory reset doesn't restore your stock rom, it just removes all user data like apps sms phone book etc. Anything done as a root user is on /system is untouched by factory reset. Once you start messing around with root factory reset becomes a misnomer. To restore your stock rom you need to use the fastboot files. Its a sticky in the dev section, assuming you are using xt862. For xt860 you can't restore to bell stock rom, but you can use the brazil stock to get close.
xt860, android 2.3.5, Monster rom
I bought from verizon soo ...its unlocked...and already come with another recovery
like if I turn on the phone it will pause on CWR =/, I need to restart on CWR to boot again fine...
Îf I put it charging, it will boot on CWR
i think your best bet is to sbf to 5.6.890 using RSD. boot the phone with m+pwr choose AP fastboot and use RSD to sbf the phone. if you are using the regular koush cwm and flash the 5.6.890 + root from http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com it may work, but if youre on 5.5.959 then you may bootloop or worse (i really dont know on that one)
how I can see what cwr or bootstrap I have?

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)
3. Look at your phone.... its now rooted.
And everyone who uses it should donate to djrbliss and prove that the Android community can support such a valuable asset!

I just did the OTA over wireless and did the update and I kept ROOT.
I did un-froze all the apps I had frozen with titanium backup before applying the update.

Droid stuck on Dual Core screen after factory SBF flash.

Heyya , I'm having a problem after flashing the factory SBH to my droid. I was having problems with the custom ROM I was on , so I wanted to flash it back to stock so I could actually use it. I downloaded the 1 click method SBF and It went through it fine and it rebooted , but now its stuck on the dual core screen. I even tried re flashing it but no luck. Any suggestions ?
After you flashed the SBF did you boot into stock recovery and do a factory reset?

You're running a different system than the factory SBF most likely, so get the 5.7.90x files for the SBF.

if your stuck at the dual core that means that means that you were on. 890 and used the. 906
the simplest fix is to download the. 906 update found on my thread push it to your external sdcard boot your phone into stock recovery pwr+x and install the update or you could download the. 890 sbf also found on my thread and re sbf
I figured that , downloaded another sbf and now it woks fine. Thanks for the help though!
