Sky go - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

2 questions
When will this be available, is it after the next upgraded rom from Sony? As I'm not sure how it works with android. Is it per android version or is it device specific?
Also will it not work based on rooting or will it work with the new locked bootloader exploit, as with that you get to keep your drm keys?
Apologies for probably stupid questions, just coming back from a 3 year break from the the dark side.... iPhone 4 & 4S

It will be when Sky Make it work, if the past is anything to go by when Sony Update to 4.2 it will stop working again!

the JB 4.2 for sony gonna come in late march. maybe 10 days later
it will change kernel and OS so firmware. it will be major update

Last time Sky added a bunch of Devices together when they updated the App so it might be they wait and Add the HTC One and the Galaxy S4. As long as we are 4.2 by then there will be no interruptions.

And will rooting the phone stop sky go working, if I use the locked boot loader method? Or could I just use custom toms with it?
Just skygo didn't work on jail broken devices, was a right pain to get it working in the end! As apple insisted on preventative measures against jail token phones Are sky just as bad on a android?

Yes... Worse the detect rooted unlocked devices in several ways... There was no way to get it working on my note 2 without having stock firmware and kernal
As we do on the z we my be able to use one of the temporary unroot methods
But won't know until sky works in the first place

Well if it wasn't for you posting it here I would have never known it had been released!
It's working for me (non rooted) although I have to adjust the brightness each time I go into a program that is showing as it's very dark to start with...

Nope- cant get it to work with my rooted z
Was waiting patiently for it to be upgraded to work, finally gave up and decided to root and Sky released the update the next day!!!

What did you do after the root?

So, as most of you know a root for the AHD came out yesterday. I wanted to say thank you to everyone that worked hours and hours on getting the root, even though Dan gets the money lol. But there are many new comers to android out there, including myself. Coming from the iphone I can tell you everything you can do once you jailbreak and iDevice, but what all have you guys done after you rooted your device. I have owned one android and played around for a while on many, but most of which were completely unlocked and had new roms installed ect. ect. So I thought it would be a good idea for people to be able to post what all they have used the root for so far, so maybe we can use those ideas and make this phone even more awesome.
The first thing I did do was calibrate my battery and have noticed a little bit better life today than I do most days.
I also uninstalled some of AT&T's annoying bloatware (which IMO belongs on NO phone)
So share what you did and give some ideas to all the readers!!!
Thanks again Dan for the root and I know Matt worked for hours and hours on it, so I would like to thank you too

Great thread idea!
First i removed att bloatware/unused ringtones and notifications
Changed boot animation
Gave already owned apps root permissions to do things like one touch reboot, auto dpi changing.
And right now I'm working on changing the color of my softkeys
Underclocked.
Once i get home from my business trip i plan on porting cwm and seeing what we can do from there

Lol I was thinking the same thing. The EB40 is an awesome upgrade and I def considering it. I just am at home and work where my phone can be charged all of the time anyways. Not to mention once we get some bloat free roms that run more efficiently, the EB20 should be okay.
After rooting,I install RootExplorer,SQ Lite,Titanium Backup,etc.
Unlocking stock wifi tethering and enabling stock sms delivery reports.

Might buy this. Opinions on it?

Your guys thoughts on it? What should I expect, and how easy is it to unlock? I have past experience in unlocking and flashing stuff, as I'm coming from the Xperia Play.
EDIT - Didn't think of this when posting it, but how about some unlocked ROMs too. Preferably running at the latest Android version and is nice and fast but good battery life.
Its a nexus. Very easy to unlock, root, and install loads of custom roms and kernels.
However its rumored that there might be a new model announced soon. Something is happening June 10th. I'd advise to wait till then at least.
Otherwise the current N7 is awesome.

I was also coming from the Xperia PLAY when i bought this tablet, i think about 2 months ago.
It was agood choice!
You get always the latest updates and there are a lot of great mods on the forum!
If you're coming from the Xperia Play than it's almost similar. With the Nexus 7 you can go into fastboot without your Windows/Mac/Linux. Just press the power button and the volume down button and you're into fastboot. The best tool to unlock/root/recovery is Wug's Nexus toolkit. And i've you're searchin' for an awesome experience then go for Paranoid Android and Franco.Kernel!
Yea man, it's a nexus, all new android content will either originate here or immediately be ported to us. It's incredible for the price. I might be jaded though, seeing as I'm coming from a Motorola DROID X2 as my only android device.
Thanks for the opinion guys! As soon as I get another $60, I'm gonna be buying this bad boy. Also, I was in the OG Android Dev section, and I noticed a nice ROM called XenonHD. It looked pretty nice. How's that compared to PAC? And on my X-Play I have SlimBean, and I did notice there was a SlimBean ROM for the N7.

There is some virtue in patience when it comes to technology, but the game changes so fast in 6 months there'll be a new thing that's better anyway so why worry? Also, I don't put stock in rumors. A new Nexus 7 might come before the end of the year, I think but maybe it'll be a 2 year stay like the Xoom was. I'm considering this current Nexus 7 to replace my aging A500. It looks super smooth even on 4.2.2 so I think I'd be happy with it.
Bought it, comes in tomorrow Can't wait to play with it. Also, where should I go about getting the drivers? I downloaded Wugs tool, isn't there an option to download drivers from that?

You won't regret buying it! I think you can get the drivers from Wugs but be very very careful using kits to unlock and root. Read the directions at least 3 times before doing anything. I've seen many posts about problems after using rooting kits. If you look it up its actually easier using adb to unlock and root.

Wug's toolkit is the best. You won't be needing anything else, really. Just read the instructions carefully.

Stuck on 4.4

Anyone else still stuck on 4.4?
I have decided not to root my phone or flash any rom that has not been directly issued to my phone by Google. I'm still too happy with my device to mess around with that.
Therefore, I decided to create a thread for the people who are still using 4.4 because they haven't got the update yet. I'm in Malta... Anyone else?
What's better than the mutual anticipation for something new, right?
Sidenote: will the update fix Google Now not working on some devices?

Because it hasn't rolled out to everyone yet. Give it time if you don't want to sideload it.
I am on 4.4 and I could have done sideloading, but I don't care much. Been doing enough nightlies with i777 (ATT SGS2) until last month when it died. I like the pure G experience more than I thought (I thought I would go for CM11 immediately after I get N5 then Omni) and I see not much issue with 4.4. I don't use my phone to take a pic much - I have Fuji XE-1 and Canon 5D for that.
I will get it when I get it. Who knows.. Google might have really started nightlies and 4.4.3 is around the corner.
Edit: Well, it looks like they have decided to give it to me just now.
I just got my 4.4.2 ota update yesterday. Chose not to sideload like I did for the 4.4.1 update. My N4 got the ota update on Mon night (it's stock, not rooted). To some degree, it's all just a crap shoot.

There are just different roll-out schedules. Let me put it this way, I was on custom recovery and rooted, and saw I had 4.4.2 update (was on 4.4). So not wanting to mess anything up I went complete stock, though when I rebooted I saw I no longer had it regardless of pressing the update button a million times. So I just ended up side loading it. The reason why it probably was not there, is probably this:
Why is clearing Google Services Framework data is a bad idea?:
There is a myth that has been around for a few years that clearing data in Google Services Framework will get you the OTA faster. Android Engineer Dan Morrill has taken to reddit to explain why NOT to do this and why the method I've described in this thread is the best way to get your update quickly.
Quote:
Doing this changes the primary ID by which Google knows your device. As far as the servers are concerned, the device was basically factory reset. There are many downstream effects of this, but a big one is that this invalidates the tokens used by any app that uses GCM (which is nearly all the Google apps, and a ton of third-party apps.)
How apps react to GCM IDs changing varies by app. With Play Store you have to log out and log back in, I think Gmail usually handles it transparently eventually but won't get new mail notifications for a while, etc. Some apps you may have to clear data on to recover. All apps will simply stop getting GCM push-messages, until they get a new GCM ID; some do this frequently, others rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID as an ID on their own servers (as it is opaque and basically random), so other things besides push messages may not work.
Nothing bursts into flames, but it makes a ton of nuisances on the device, including some that can look pretty mysterious. Your mileage will vary depending on what apps you use.
All of this can be avoided by just doing an 'adb sideload' if you are impatient. -Dan Morrill

I am assuming it was no longer valid for me because my ID changed when I wiped my phone. So with that being said, your choices are to either wait, or side load.
4.4 as well ..I'll get the update eventually. No rush here.

From the sheer number of posts showing problems with sideloading, I recommend waiting for the OTA update. Why risk so many issues and buggy software just to get an update a few days earlier?

common miss-conception.
sideload is just a different channel to put the damn OTA zip on your phone. there is no higher / lower rate of issues than getting the actual OTA, you will be in the same boat.
Got tired of waiting in Dallas yesterday. I know...patience is a virtue but no a strong point of mine. Wanted to check the camera out so I side loaded both updates early last night.
My N5 has been working like a champ. Camera and speaker are definitely improved!

There are no problems with sideloading if one hasn't messed with their phone. Issues arise when one tries to sideload the OTA and they have modified files in /system.

while there are bug fixes, i highly doubt they'll patch the particular exploit that allows us to root, and if they do, Chainfire will find another exploit in a matter of days, specially since the kernel source is available, so you'll always be able to root, don't worry about that.
I took a plunge and I managed to root the device with ChainFire. Now to wait for the GS5 Playstore edition
I wonder if all of those S5 models will make the porting of the playstore version harder?
Also, what's up with all those versions? Are they baseband-related only (aside from the ones with different processors)?

Will anything past OE2 ever get Root? (OG5,OG7,etc..)

Anyone know of any active developement regarding the 925V variant? Way too nice not to have root.
There is zero development.
Zero KNOWN progress. Who knows for sure though. King root might work for us one day or it might not.

I've stuck with my ATT Note3 on TMO, and TMO Note4. My son has a Sprint S6 Edge on TMO and it has surprisingly quite a bit of development. If I knew anything regarding locked vs. unlocked BL's I'd have a go with this 925V. Just really surprised at the lack of development for this device. Sucks!
Unfortunately, it seems that we've been left in the dark. Surely one of the many devs would have a thread going with some sort of progress update if any were working on it.
@spadz93 That's kinda what I'm thinking. Too bad. I use way too many root functions to even consider keeping my 925V. Really nice hardware either way. I'll probably look for a TMO variant.
Verizon sucks anyway. Worst service I've ever had. I liked T-Mobile way better. I have constant dropped calls, missed texts etc with Verizon.
I would pay good money to have some development for this device... without development, its useless... anyone interested? pm me =]

I wouldn't go so far as to call it useless... It's still a solid phone with decent hardware. Just because you can't root it and install custom ROMs doesn't make it useless. I'm more interested in a phone that works consistently everyday than I am the ability to push the hardware to the point of random reboots and overheating. Once I gave up root for 5.1 I've had next to zero issues with the phone and I like it much more.

Yea, my statement is a little exaggerated but no xposed is huge for me personally. I like to play with my phone and customize it. Without root and xposed, I can't do that like I could with my s4 so it bothers me
What upsets me is the fact that devs give up trying to root a phone if a solution doesn't come within a month or two, if the phone is the only variant that still doesn't have a root and it will take more effort than a few tweaks to do it. I've seen it over and over again with so many phones. If I knew how to even begin to look for a root on the phone and I had the money to buy phones that I could burn in the process, then I'd totally work at it.
what I dont understand is theres ppl with the Note 4 that are able to root 5.1.1 using King Root and no one has tried it on any firmware beyond OE2 for us yet..
I know one person said it worked for him on OF1 but need more to confirm before I update and update all my ROMs.
