[Q] Reg. Battery Drain Issue - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have created this thread to get some review & advice regarding combinations of kernel & Rom for this phone. I have tried many combinations on the phone but the battery drain issue is there and battery work for only 6 to 7 hours in very normal use. Right now I am on JB XXLPZ rom & CoCore 4.4 kernel. My daily use is normal and battery statestics shows that my screen uses 60 to 65% of the battery where I have set the briteness of the screen on Auto adjust mode. Please suggest best combination which should work for performance of battery and ofcourse speed also as my current combination has made the phone little lagy and slow in compare to the stockrom I was using DDLK2.
Please help and give suggestions.
Thanks in Advance.

AW: [Q] Reg. Battery Drain Issue
First of all deactivate auto screen brightness, it uses very much battery. Set it to a low level, you can always set it higher if needed.
I use lq4 + cocore 4.4 and just use stock gov and sched and have no battery problems.
Wifi needs less battery than mobile data. Use it whenever possible.
If you're not using Internet stop all connections. It drains battery most.
Get dark wallpaper, white backgrounds use more battery.
In my opinion the different govenors don't make much difference in battery life. Unless you use performance or powersave.
It's you who can influence the battery life much with your behaviours.
So stop autosync (you could use an APP for timecontrolled syncs)
Stop autobrightness
Stop internetconnections when possible or switch to wifi.
Get dark background.
Stop haptic feedback.
Watch this Screenshot. I had wifi off The most time but used it for calls and messaging.
At the end of the graph i started playing some games so...
More than 17 hours.

good post, really
concerning the dark background, you are really right. AMOLED-screens need (lcd not) more power for brighter pixels and subpixels. so avoid light screens. choose a dark whatsapp background (i think you use whatsapp, who does not ). choose dark backgrounds and bright font if your able to do.
disable sync you dont need. imho you shouldnt disable contact sync and calendar sync. it drains not too much power.
one last advice: avoid to look to your phone every five mins and look if somethings changed at facebook this drains your battery

Two things
One
I thinks there is no much dofference between 0 brightness and 100, i mean, about battery wasting, even with no brightness has the same wasted percentages in the battery stats.
Two
Mi Galaxy Ace battery lasts 4 minutes in standby with nothing on and doing nothing. Lol

sorry but if u are using an AMOLED display this is not true. an AMOLED pixel produces light. As more brightness you want as more power is consumed. Otherwise an LCD display needs less power for brighter pixels because the power is needed to darken the white background panel.

Thanks a lot everyone for valueable suggestions. Let me try for 2 days and i willget back with results.

Battery Life
Hi there, i've tried loads of tweaks and MODs for this phone, was very disappointed with the stock samsung 4.1.2 ROM. I'd recommend Pure Vanilla, I've had very good battery life and performance results from this rom and it's being developed steadily.

No, not normal. I get home with like 55-60% battery left with
12 hours standby
1-1.5 hours calls
1-1.5 hours with activities that keep screen on like texting, mails, etc
i am on the ROM in my signature.
ok is there anyway to get reduce the battery drain without changing roms if not whats the best rom for battery life??

Try using a kernel that supports UV and setting slightly reduced voltages. I am using GB's 1280 kernel, and capped the speed at 1000. And reduced the voltages slightly.
Others would be normal things like switching to EDGE, lowering brightness levels, setting wifi to "turn off when screen off", etc.
what does UV mean sorry im a newb :/ and how do u install a different kernel

UV = Under volting
1. Load the kernel in my signature (attached to this post)
2. Install the voltage control app (attached to this post)
3. Start the voltage app and set the voltages and cap at the levels based on the pic in this thread.
WARNING: Voltage levels depend on phone to phone. I would suggest starting from low values. Take off 50 from the values I have posted in the pic and use them. If u feel it is ok, then add another 25. Take it slowly checking if the reduced voltages are freezing up ur phone.
I would recommend u starting with these values: 75 75 50 25 25 0 from bottom to top.
Ok thanks diablo I will test this out tomorrow and report back

Sounds like a good old battery recalibrate is in order:
1. Connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until it shows 100%
2. Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off.
3. Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the battery indicator shows 100% (you can use vol-up/vol-down to make the indicator come back up when the screen goes to sleep).
4. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on.
5. Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the battery indicator shows 100%.
6. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and use it.
I did this a couple days ago, plus wiped stats, and as of right now, I am showing 20% after 30 hours. No joke.
Running Cognition 3.04,
juice defender is amazing!! it helped my battery so much!!! thanks a lot!!!
Try searching google / this forum for a post of resetting battery stats, i need to do that also since my battery life isnt all that good either, especially how im running 3.04 cog and everyone says batt. life is amazing. SO if anyone can link to battery reset post that would be amazing.

Ironically, JuiceDefender killed my phone *much* faster than with me manually enabling and disabling my data connection.
IMO, JuiceDefender does nothing that you can't do yourself, the problem is, is that it constantly has to check apps to see if any are enabled to toggle your data connection.
I am just saying

I actually use my phone and I am getting these results
I have a very similar question. My problem is, on custom roms (I've tried Assonance, Serendipity, and another), my battery drains 1%/hour. This is even after a fresh install; nothing is running in the background. When I look into my battery info, it says wifi is doing the draining. I keep hearing people saying their battery life is amazing after flashing custom roms, but I'm getting the complete opposite. Am I forgetting something?
Without custom roms or anything, and using a rooted/lag-fixed (not sure this makes any diff anyway) setup, I lose somewhere between 2-3% battery per hour on standby. I don't even use juicedefender. I really love what they're doing with these custom roms, but the wifi on standby just rapes my battery.

+1 why have an app probe for stuff that u can do for urself. Little things like remembering to turn off wifi when not in wifi zone would help u extend ur battery.

What apps does she have installed which you don't?
For example, if she uses the Facebook/Twitter apps and they're updating themselves every 10 mins as opposed to every hour (or even manually) then her battery will get eaten alive!

how do i do that? in the task manager?
I also turned the sync to her facebook app to 'never' .
Turn GPS off when not needed and WiFi when not needed that usually helps. Also when wifi is on turn off notify me about new networks. Make sure screen brightness is set to automatic also.
if she has live wallpapers thats a bad ideea for a lasting battery, live wallpapers use cpu.. cpu user electricity, and the battery gets empty really fast. i`m runing ~ 40hours with nonstop wifi or data mode activated, depends on my locations, 1 push email runing 24/7 skype 24/7 and i talk for about 10-30 min per day... so... install cpu temp v2 and uncheck the screen timeout (set it to 10 minutes) and let the phone on the table and look at the cpu tempv2 if the cpu drops to 1-5 % @100mhz , if it doesn`t drop below 10 percent @100mhz then you have some nasty apps that are not idle.
if im in an area where i get 5 bars i can get more battery life while using my phone for a while, than I would if I am in an area where i get no connection or an area where my connection is constantly dropping. This is because the phone constantly tries to connect to the service provider and uses up tons of battery doing it.

I have 2 days battery life with medium usage, download a stripped rom and keep it basic on the widget/wallpaper/amount of apps.
Download damiangto 1.2 gold underclock to 800 mhz (or keep it at 1000 mhz, but it doesnt change so much in speed for me)
undervolt by steps. as long as your phone doesnt die in sleepmode you can go lower. Im undervolting at -100 without any problems.
Download superpower or juicedefender. I have good experiences with both, using superpower at the moment and its free and good.
black backgrounds and themes are better for battery life because of the Super AMOLED screen.
You dont have to totally discharge your phone before charging it, charging whenever possible is actually better for long term battery life.
Hope this helps
Thanks for the replies everyone
I'l check all of the information out
I installed
Battery mix (has discharge graph)
Smart battery
Battery eta (has Discharge rate)
I swapped batteries with mine (hers still discharged too fast)
annoyingly it mucked up the battery discharge statistics because my battery was full when i put it in her phone.
She doesn't really muck about with her phone, very few apps or wallpaper etc.
I just go crazy with mine.
my battery discharge (with loads of use see CPU graph)

her battery use (phone was in her bag not used all day at work)
she was in a different location to me. see no CPU activity either
I looked in running services
mapslocationfriendservice (latitude) was 26% mine was about 9
and android system was higher on her phone
I mucked about unnistalled and installing maps using market and titanium backup
also I installed OCLF on her phone (one click lag fix) because it is on my phone. also the battery apps were slowing it down.
In short
her battery is plummeting about 3 hour if its in use and 11 in standby
its not the battery
i think is something to do with the android system.
probably latitude
but i could be wrong
I'll have another crack at it later.
Worst case i could master reset and restore titanium backups of her texts and contacts and stuff. but I like to sort it out
Cheers for the advice, I'll check it all out.
I'll post back if there any change in the situation
quick update
Her phone appears to be running better
I think it was google maps latitude update.
I cant 100% be sure.
but the result of the stuff i tried on the above post seemed to have changed her phone from the poor performance it suddenly started getting.
I am thinking of trying out 'superpower' and or 'juicedefender' on mine and her phones in the future.
Thanks for the tips everyone

Battery Life, How is it doing.

Just wondering what other people are getting. With light to moderate use it took me 19hrs to get to 26% remaining and that is with some movie watching taking some 3D Photo's watching some 3D Video from youtube and playing a game or two here and there. Anyway I have not actually done anything to get that amount of life just for those that might ask, no special App No Extended Battery etc.
Battery life is getting better, still not great but since I'm always near a charger I don't really have trouble in that respect.
Yea I have noticed that too the longer it stays on and the longer I have it the better the battery life is getting. Than again that happens when you flash roms a lot too also depends on what you have running etc etc. So I guess I should not be surprised to see a fluctuation of 20-40% difference between user's.
My battery life has been dismal to say the least. I was really liking this phone but with no access to a charger I am afraid I will have to bring it back. Mine seems to drop battery sitting in the box turned off. Maybe its defective?

juice defender has really done the trick for me. I actually would have returned the device if it wasn't for it.

battery life = fail. I really wanted to like this phone and got it as an iphone 4 replacement. so far there are several things I dont like about it and battery life in probably number one.
Well from what I have read on a different part of this there is a 1930 mah (whatever its called) battery you can get that doesn't require modifying the case of the phone. I can only assume that would help those that are having issues with battery life. Also I am guessing once we get some custom Rom's running that will also help quite a bit considering I think 2.3.3 or one of those had some mods to help battery life issues that froyo had.
My battery life sucks, but I'm on it constantly so I understand. I love the phone still. Bad thing about android devices is the battery life. But I'm not going back to an iphone or blackberry! A better phone > battery life.

As you can tell the system manages to use up a lot of the battery.
This was def changed on my Captivate with a custom rom, with great results to the battery life.
So I can image with an upgraded rom and an upgraded battery(coming this week) this phone should def do damn well!
I have also just installed SuperPower to help manage some of the data items and such when the phone screen is off to maximize battery life. For those that have SetCPU you can also do the smae things with a little more customization.

Oh and I also use a black background
hope this helps improve your battery life.
LOL...a lot of these settings don't work for me... I actually use my phone Haha.
I could see a few being useful though...which is why I haven't responded with "why not just toggle airplane mode"
It was my understanding background choice does not affect this type of screen. Brightness does but do some tests. You background shouldn't have an ill affect on battery life unless amoled screen

but today i just got my 1980 mah battery in the mail.. so im excited to see what kind of usage i get out of it now!!!

Sometimes I get this issue, and I can tell within the first 3% of my phone's battery dropping. The first thing I do is a battery pull, that fixes it.
if that doesn't work it must be a setting or an application.
EDIT: from your usage, it seems that your phone isn't going to sleep. Try an app called Badass Battery Monitor from the market. It will show what apps are using your battery life. link here: Badass battery monitor
Try deleting some recently installed apps.

I had the same problem. First couple of days I got way more than a day and after that it got like my two year old Droid; It sucked.
Turned out that K9 was a battery hog and drained the battery for about 30 percent. Threw it out (though you can also do some adjustments to it) and got my old battery life back. Have a look at the stats to see what is taking up your battery and try to find a solution.
There's something preventing your phone from going to deep sleep. Take a look at 'Awake' and 'Screen On' lines at the bottom of your screenshot:
The right hand side of those two lines are as it should be - the phone is awake when the screen is on.
But the left hand side is wrong - your phone is awake with no screen on (meaning no user activity). Could be a rogue app running in the background and consuming battery juice. Why don't you investigate what you have installed in the past couple of weeks and see if some app is misbehaving.
Also, your WiFi is constantly on (look at the continuous fat line at the bottom). You'd do well to switch it off when not needed, or set WiFi sleeping policy in Settings/Wireless and Network/Wi-Fi Settings/(hit Menu button once inside)Advanced/Wi-Fi sleep policy.
Hope this helps.
I had exact same problem. I tested by removing recently installed apps until I found the culprit. Turned out to be Google+ in my case. Once removed battery was back to normal.
Some more tips on prolonging your battery life:
1. Flash and test different kernels in case of battery drain. Some are easier on your battery than the others.
2. Use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall crapware. This list is a useful guide as to what can/can't be removed from your system: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
3. Set Brightness to low value, disable autobrightness
4. Disable or scale down vibration and haptic feedback
5. Don't let your accounts sync automatically
6. Set screen timeout to 15 seconds
7. Disable fast dormancy (dial *#9900# and do it from there)
8. Don't keep your WiFi/Packet Data on all the time
9. Disable location services via wireless networks - are you travelling that fast that you need those?
10. GPS is heavy on the battery, therefore use it sparingly
Folks I followed some of these tips and this its the battery life I an getting on checkrom v5. Better than my old captivate....

Hi chasmodo,
thank you very much for this helpful google-list.

I can't see a good reason for disabling autobrightness... in my opinion this option saves more power (in the long run indeed!) than its backgroundprocess will cost.

Of course.

[PROBLEM] High Battery Drain and Lockscreen

Hello,
Recently I noticed that my battery is drained faster than usual, even when I put it untouched overnight, it drains about 30% of battery
First, I thought, that it was kernel (I flashed Hydracore v1.1std), but when I came back to kernel, which I used (Notecore 14.1 std) battery drain still was present.
I discharged battery and charged with AC charger when phone was off, lifetime was increased little bit, but nothing important.
I checked in task manager (es task manager) and there is no unusual tasks or autorun entries...
I cleared cache and dalvik cache from CWM
I checked also cpuspy and my phone does go to deepsleep
also in battery statistics, most battery consumption is as usual order (screen consumes more than 50%) but, drain rate is increased greatly when screen is on (for example when I am using navigation) in comparison as it was before.
I bought phone 3 month ago, so battery itself should be fin
Today I also noticed that screen is not locking after specified time...and I can not figure out which application is preventing it...
currently I am on Hydracorev2.b std kernel and XXLRK stock firmware
First of all notecore is a performance based rom and second did u wiped battery stats wen u charged ur phn completely in switch off mode???

install betterbatterystats and put your phone in airplane mode for a day. Check the BBS after and see any kind of apps or wakelocks that might be causing your battery drain issue.
also,it might be noteworthy to tell you this but your kernel is not optimized for battery life and is instead more on performance (which equates to higher CPU speed consumption and which in turns, drains much battery juice after).
Switch to a more battery saving kernel like SpeedMod... it is developed and mainly optimized to get more juice out of your phone.
Thanks gays for helpful advices
I know, that notecore is good for performance and speedmod for battery life, but as I mentioned battery drain was higher as usual (I am on notecore kernel from v3)
If I wipe battery stats will it help?
I will try betterbatterystats and write results
It will help wipe battery stats

I was running Hydra v1 on LiquidSmooth V2 (beta2) N7000 and using the Beast Kernel. Dropped about 1% per minute while using phone and also about 30% over night.
I then flashed the HydraCore v1 which made a major improvement in performance and battery drain. I loaded HydraCore v2.1 (beta) today and the battery was already a bit better, but I then noticed that the default setting for Latitude was to automatically share my location. I disabled that and so far the battery drain has been less. Will be checking if this caused my issue.

I will update to Hydra 2.1
for now, drain is less than before, I wiped battery stats
here is partial wakelock screen:

I think this is normal?
I switched to speedmod K3-13
and now, I have deeplsleep issue, and according BBT, this is kernel wakelock multipdp, which drained 97% of my battery (about45% in 7 hours)
I think I found problem:
It's Google Maps Location update service
Code:
com.google.android.location
I found in BetterBatteryStats Alarms over 450 wakeups in 7 hours and almost no deepsleap
But I completely disabled location updates (do not update setting) in Google Maps settings....
any ideas?
Do you have some other apps that connect to the internet as well? facebook, flipboard, instant messaging apps,Accuweather /Clock Widgets... etc... ? You need to individually note all the apps you have on your phone... and one by one check if one or two have some background syncs enabled, turn them off or set it to never.

Thanks for advice,
Yes, I have all af them :| I have disabled location now in all related (FB, Accuweather)
When data connection is on (as it was previous) it consumes a lot of battery power because there is a lot of wakeups and phone is not going in deepsleep (even when in most of applications, sync time is 1 hour (except mail clients)
Now, I have disabled data and after 40 minutes of idle time, battery is still at 100% and most of the time in deepsleep
I will check at morning battery stats and drain level,
If it is OK, I will turn data on and will observe power consumption
But, as I mentioned week age, everything was fine with turned on location services and data
I guess best option would be to flash the rom, but I want to find out what causes problem to avoid it further

you can give it a shot first to observe for a couple of days to let it settle down everything.
And in case you don't know.. your apps are constantly being updated by Google itself. (when you turn data on and access Google Play for example). Some updates on some apps might have triggered this issue. Flashing Roms are just one side to the story. The other side is one big grey matter.

Yeah,
I know this things, at least as user...
Today I turned data, and battery life is greatly improved, it is about 68% at this time, no heavy use, but I had problems with Idle time too...
I also did this:

I don't know what helped, but it is better now...

See? , sometimes it's good to weed things out. The method of elimination usually does the trick. It's at the bottom of my signature as well... :highfive:
