[Q] Root on JB - SAMBA Exploit Permissions No Longer Working? - Motorola Atrix HD

I am attempting the SAMBA Root Exploit as outlined in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143437
I've run into the same issue as this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39186782&postcount=275
I received this phone just last week, and applied the JB update (to 4.1.2) upon receiving it.
I am worried that the SAMBA exploit no longer works, and that permissions/owner for all files mounted via SMB are reset to system:sdcard_rw which won't allow the pwn script to run.
I've confirmed on the Ubuntu side that the permissions/owner are properly set to 6755 root:root, but once mounted via SMB and accessed through the ADB shell, the owner is reset to system:sdcard_rw
That's at least 2 people now who've encountered the same problem. Is anyone else seeing this?
Here are the versions of everything I have:
Ubuntu Live USB 12.10
System Version: 98.6.11.MB886.BellMobility.en.CA
Baseband Version: MB886_BP_100740.071.65.61P
Build Number: 9.8.2Q-8_MB886_FFW-11

I just did it two nights ago on Ubuntu 12.10
No problems at all.

It we works fine always check your debug settings every time u type a command it some how kept turnin my settings off on my debug also make sure u set pass word for guest I lacked that for an hour

[SOLVED] How do I root 2.2 to get to Honeycomb?

Upon every reboot, the Galaxy Tab appears to have wiped all data. It prompts me to setup the device. Apps I install are wiped out.
Q. How do I get the device onto Honeycomb Alpha 2?
or
Q. How do I get root on FroYo to get onto Honeycomb Alpha 2.5?
A coworker dumped this device on me. I've been working with Chaos67731, using his instructions to get this Galaxy Tab restored to stock. Here is a video (in 2x and sometime 20x) of that process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eNLh6wu0ZE. It was on some flavor of Honeycomb, probably a custom ROM, from an outside developer/consultant. From conversations with Chaos67731 it would appear that the recovery on the device is far from stock. After I reboot, the device prompts for setup and flashes "Force close" messages left and right. Chaos67731 mentioned something about "Fix permissions," but I'm not sure where to start with that. Do I need root access?
I attempted to temproot with Visionary+. No dice. (I tried V+ because it's how I temproot my HTC-G2 to run gfree to permroot)
I attempted to root using superoneclick. OS Version Check Failed. Running psneuter... FAILED.
I attempted to root using z4root. "...has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
Any and all help would be appreciated! I'm working mostly off adb on OSX at this point. I'm able to hop on Ubuntu 10.04 and WinVista if necessary.

It looks like I have root access, but cannot execute root commands. Superuser.apk kicks an "unexpectedly quit" type error.
Use Super One Click. Honeycomb is Android 3.0-3.1 not 2.5. Also the Honeycomb port is still in Alpha and seeing how you don't really know what software version it is I don't know that I would really recommend you switching to it because a lot of stuff doesn't work. It takes some work to move around on it.

it's the verizon tab. so you need to download the samsung sch-i800 drivers, because the tab doesn't install them well, generally. then, run superoneclick, in psneuter mode, with usb debugging enabled. it'll get to a point where it looks like it's hung? it hasn't. leave it be. this takes longer to root for some odd reason. my impatience made me think it was unrootable, but then i had to walk away from the computer during a rooting attempt, and when i came back, it had gotten past the point where it usually 'hung' and was chugging right along. so yeah. be patient. lol.
as far as honeycomb goes, it's only in alpha mode. but once you're rooted, you can flash via the instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14428575&postcount=718
or, you can run a custom FroYo mod called better than life, which is epic win. find that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147277
and if you brick it, you can fix it with instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133590
good luck!
Thanks for the tips. I'm 90% there. I'm able to root, but I can't get root access. Perhaps that's for another thread.
i'm not really sure what you mean, that you can't get root access. if you're rooted, then use a root file explorer like root explorer, or es file manager.
New post about my current problem. When I try to run anything as root, I receive an error that Superuser has unexpectedly quit.

Software update - Lost Root

Just did the software update today and it all went smooth after unfreezing all original apps I had originally froze with TiBu. I noticed that I lost root after the update, which I thought was no big deal until I tried to re-root. I tried the ADB method, SuperOneClick, and also thecubed's way with no success. Don't know if it is just me or if lg/verizon changed something in the update. When doing the ADB method I am stuck at pushing rageagainstthecage. I get the "Permission failed to copy..." message, but doing "adb usb" and "adb root" no longer fixes this. Also, "adb root" shows "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". Anyone else having trouble after the new software update?
I lost root, too. I've only been able to try SuperOneClick so far, but I haven't been able to get root back yet either.

I cant root either with SuperOneClick version 1.7 or 1.9.5

Yeah, I'd suggest no one update if they want to keep root. I've seen this on my last phone (Eris) and it took the devs literally months to figure it out.

I have tried the newest version of SuperOneClick and it does not work either. Hopefully someone will figure this out soon as I really miss having root.

Interesting note is that after the update, my inductive charging stopped working properly on the rooted phone. It was working fine prior to the update. I have two phones, one rooted one not. It would state that I have removed my phone off the charging pad as the phone is sitting there on the charge pad. the pad states that it is still in charging mode but all charging stopped on the phone. I also notice that the USB port is behaving strangely too. Unrooted the LG but it still behave the same from the update. I haven't been able to root it again yet.
Yup Software Update Loses Root and R/W File System
I restored back down to v4 (from the v6 update), wiped the phone. And still cant mount the File System as R/W
Tried Super One Click 2.2.1, Z4 1.3.0 both failed for the same reason (both exploits)
Super User and Root Explorer both crash whenever they try to remount the File System.
If anyone finds a way to unlock, let me know.
I am personally gonna put back v6 for now, but i dont like feel inhibited.

My USB was acting strangely too, until I lost it totally (as posted in another thread). I used to be able to do an extended battery pull and it would come back...now nothing. I hope this isn't happening to yours too.
I backed up my data then did a hard reset. The USB restarted again. I noticed a few apps that VZN has triggers this so I testing it from that point. Those apps shouldn't/ didn't affect the USB prior to the update.
So http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211295 explains how to downgrade after the update to then root, but since this has been figured out has all progress on developing a way to root the phone after the update stopped? I still like some of the features with the stock rom after the update and am wondering if anyone is working on a new exploit still, or if downgrading is the only fix on the horizon?

[Q] Atrix HD Developer Edition

Greetings All -
First time post...lurked for a while. Just recently purchased an Atrix HD Dev. Edition. I guess I'm a little bit confused...I got an unlocked bootloader etc., but no su executable or Superuser.apk. Motorola gives no instructions on getting root, just how to unlock your bootloader.
I realize I could flash the phone and run a different image/ROM etc, but I want to just use the current generic ICS install for the time being.
I've rooted multiple other Android devices, so I get the idea of using an exploit to get root, install su/busybox/superuser.apk etc. If I want to get root on this install of ICS 4.0.4 do I still need an exploit to get root? With adb I can manually move over su, busybox etc. but I can't remount system and can't put su in place and change it's perms in order to "SU". I thought that a dev edition phone was supposed to be at least partially "rooted"? Am I missing something here?
Thanks in Advance
If your on ics then there is a 1 click root in the android development section.

I've been searching the forums off and on since January, trying to see if anyone has successfully rooted an unlocked Atrix HD developer edition, ICS 4.0.4. No luck finding anything, so this is my first post. At least I'm not the only one with this problem.
I've tried motofail2go many times but it says "exploit failed" and I verify with Root Check Basic, which confirms that it's not rooted. USB debugging is on, and I've tried it while connected as mass storage and media device. I've tried replacing adb that came in the zip file with a newer version, and also other versions of su and superuser that were suggested.
The volume up + power never seemed to give a unique vibrate; I tried it with screen lock and without, hundreds of times. I also tried running adb bugreport from a separate cmd window, which did produce a double vibration but didn't make a difference.
Is there some reason that this won't work with an unlocked bootloader?
Some of the time you can root generically, try rooting with this "universal root 4.0.4" guide.
Also your "partially" rooted I think you can try installing Super User from the play store
here.

Root For Bell Atrix HD Jelly Bean 4.1.2

I have a feeling that I should probably post a thread of this nature in the development subforums, however I have nothing to present. What I'm looking to do is either modify an existing or build a new script which will root the Bell version of the Atrix HD which is on Jelly Bean. As many of you may know, the methods using Ubuntu, Motofail2Go and the various other options do not work. However they work partially for us. For example, when using Ubuntu I can get the message that I have rooted the device but it cannot copy the certain files (busybox, etc) to the device. On the other hand, MotoFail2Go also works to a certain extent, installing the sudoku.apk and the like, but the root either doesnt work or stick. With this being said, my question is how can I go about modifying any of these scripts or methods to work with 4.1.2 or is there anything I can do to help a developer with this issue? Any direction would be appreciated, whether it is me working alone on this project or with the help of other developers and community members.
Those other apps stick around because they're pushed to a writeable temp folder. If the exploit isn't working, I'm not sure tweaking a script will do anything to help.
Have you tried any other root methods?
The GS4 just got rooted and it hasn't even been released yet

As of now I've tried all of the published ways here on XDA and nothing seems to work for 4.1.2 yet it works for 4.1.1 which is why I thought that it would be possible to tweak one of the exploits in whichever way needed to root this slightly different (as it would seem) firmware. I'm not sure where exactly where to start looking when it comes to rooting the device, any help would be appreciated. Which files do I need to have on my device and where do I need to have them in order to obtain root?

[Q] bionic jb 98.72.22 su binary help! root access?

So from the beginning I updated from notification on phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2. Then bricked after trying to gain root acess. Finally able to flash jb 98.72.22. Tried for days to find a root that worked. Couldn't get motochopper to gain root. Tried god knows how many others. Finally got virtual box, imported Root_Bionic_JB.ova and still wouldn't work. Keep coming across su binary issues. The closest i got was with the virtual box installing superuser. But when I trying to update the binary says unable and to send a log report. What am i doing wrong? is it a step im missing when unzipping to desktop? everything goes smooth until cmd gets to rooting, then says failed. cleaning. press enter to reboot and close. Im about to lose my mind! Please some assistance. I sick of failing every attempt from every suggest forum (quietly sobbing )
You need to go back to what has been proven to work. Moto chopper 2. Not to be insulting BUT I know from experience, just BC you can't get something to work the first couple of times you try it doesn't mean it does not work. Period. Now, where did you get hung up on the Ubuntu exploit? List all that you did.

Well, not to be insulting, but it was my understanding that moto chopper would only work if temp rooted or had gained root acess previously? I may be wrong. Anyways, the prob. with unbuntu is thing i guess froze (but still ran) after patiently running it like six hours. Last screen at was installing-reinstalling previous "somethings" but I figured need a system clean and would try again. gotta be easier way. so here is my linux minimal screenshot attempt. running root bionic jb ovf file. noticed where it starting going wrong is
chmod: pwn: operation not permitted.
rooting phone...
phone may appear to.......
/system/bin/sh: /storage/rfs0/pwn: not found <-------Right here i noticed the file path on the phone and it's ---> storage/rfs1 Would that have something to do w/ it?
nothing ever vibrates and reboots in flash. got bad flash or something?
MotoChopper works on non TI (OMAP) CPus that are in Motoroal devices.
Coincidentally, it also works on ASUS Tranformer Infinity (and the Prime as well, IIRC).
It does not work on the BIONIC.
The method that works on rooting the JB build on the BIONIC is one that is based upon the older RAZR method - see http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/16518-root-motoshare-2-old-bug-new-exploit/

Ok so using virtual box the ova Root_Bionic_JB_20130501-4 the fourth ubdate of the orginal release. Now i suggest erasing all superuser apps installed your self and anything to do with them. When it's done right, it will appear on it's own and work flawlessly. No uncertianties about it. Then i've posted a screen shot of the commands with notes to help understand easiest. The instant the command to press hardware key or power/or each volume itself is the instant you want to press it. Now the reboot is instantious kinda itself and gotta be noticing phone unless have ungodly long boot up let me know if the screen shot helped what you were asking.
