Hello there XDA!
I have just bought this phone after realising that I just can't stand the terrible piece of thing, HTC Desire Z anymore. Saw the unveiling of the S4 and wasn't too impressed and decided to just get the S3.
I haven't got the S3 yet though, will receive it sometime in the next 2-3 days.
Anyway, got a two questions here..
1) Why are there very little support for the I9305 version of the S3 on XDA compared to the I9300? (Android Development sub-forum, by the way) I was going to get the I9300 because of this but the store I went to didn't have them anymore. I really am planning to have this phone for a long time but the lack of support here worries me.
2) What is the best mod and ROM to use on the device? I will be rooting this. I'm looking for a smooth experience using the device as well as a quite decent battery life. I want to know the general opinions on here on which is the best rom.
That's all folks! Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Nexus 4 had no removable storage and the Xperia Z is a tad bit overpriced here so, S3 was the way to go. Plus the specifications on the S3 is good enough for me especially the screen size, I don't really need a 1080p screen.
Thanks anyway!
If you want a Stock ROM but optimised, go for Wanamlite.
CyanogenMOD is AOSP so you'd lose some Samsung features and the camera isn't as great.
BTW, great to see more Bruneians here on XDA!
I'm on ripper rom themed with domination. OC'ed to 1.5 with yank kernel.
Getting 5.30h on screen time heavy use.
I tried cyanogen on my normal 9300 but battery time : waaaay too weak. +lots of lag.
So don't really like it.

Hello fellow countryman!
Well, seems like I've got two roms to try out. I want to experience Touchwiz for a little bit because I've used CM roms on my previous phone for the whole time. Thanks guys!

I would actually try most, if not all, if I could but unfortunately, internet speed is pretty terrible at times..
the second question is against the rules.
You will love the s3 lte and from my experience the best ROM for overall is pandoriam which has a lot to offer in terms of performance and customization with all the goodies from stock.
Anyways enjoy one of the best phones on the market if not the best!

again, DON'T discuss which ROM is best
I'm sorry. I've only read that a few days after I made this thread.
Anyways, currently enjoying the smooth and fluid experience with RipperROM as well as the CrossBreeder mod. I am really loving this phone so far. Huge step up from my previous phone, Desire Z.

It's not a matter of specifications, the specs are good enough. The problem is that Samsung don't support the developers by releasing the source code they need in order to properly port CyanogenMod and AOSP-based ROMs to their devices. What this means is that devices with an Exynos4 processor, such as our lovely I9305s, will never get officially stable CyanogenMod or any other AOSP-based ROMs like ParanoidAndroid or AOKP, there are just too many blanks to fill. With an Exynos4-based device you can expect to live with graphics glitches, higher than normal battery drain from modem, and no project butter support. Presuming Samsung doesn't eventually release the source (seeming more and more unlikely now that the Exynos4 isn't even their top-of-the-line processor).
Yeah, I can see how that's a problem. I think the same thing happened with Desire Z where HTC did not give out the source code for the camera or something..

Ok, so his question was against the rules, but the responses weren't necessarily. The second one didn't say what was the best, it said what the poster was using.
Factual information about a ROM is very different than pure speculation about what's the best.
Did it really make your life worse having those two helpful posts on this thread for the guy?

I feel a huge difference in terms of performance, and the O2X had a habbit of running out of RAM constantly, making it very laggy (this could be helped somewhat using CM7).
And don't even get me started on the whole BSOD while charging issue, that is just annoying - not being able to trust your phone at all (even if the issue seems to be rare with V20s).
The Galaxy Nexus is also capable of playing pretty much any video I can throw at it - even 1080p high profile. The O2X lagged horribly with pretty much any video I tried, mainly because most of my videos are encoded in high profile h264.
But the thing that matters the most is not the hardware, its the software - it is just great to know that you will receive the newest version of the OS in a timely manner, not delays after delays. And the releases are not filled with tons of crap (like F-Secure on the stock ROM or w/e the name of it is).
But to be fair, the O2X is a great phone (on CM7, hoping for ICS soon so it can have CM9), and I would have kept it for myself it if not for the cheap Galaxy Nexus

If you put a dual core on a pile of crap you get o2x. Worst phone ever, i hope to get rid of it soon.
Well today I bought G Nex too. Updated it to JB and it works damn smooth. Now I just have to sell my O2X
Gnex was my first Android phone got it back in January then I got the o2x for my wife then a gtab 10.1 and recently a gnote.. Tbh gnex its an hyper boring phone.. That thing its unbrickable and every rom out there its the same boring thing.. Noone likes to "change the stock feel" same features in all roms and stable as hell..
Everything works as it should.. And the forum its boring as hell.. Same applies for gnote.. But I kept gnote stock with touchwiz since I have cm9 on my gtab and stock jelly bean on the gnex... So actually I like the stress here and gtab forums about waiting for the releases xD

I do not agree, the ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus might look pretty much the same on first glance, but the features are way different, for example Paranoid Android allows you to choose tablet mode and DPI per app.
Pretty much all ROMs built for the O2X are based on CyanogenMod.
02x is a good phone.. I just wish it wouldn't randomly lock up. I can't really ever trust it , in stressful situations like trying to open GPS while lost in Sydney traffic is sometimes is slow or freezes.
can't unlock from boot straight away because it might freeze etc.
I would like a more reliable phone.

Yeah, I plan to sell my P990 and get a Galaxy Nexus too... If ICS comes to the P990 by then I may change my mind, but if not, I'm not sure how I'll sell it.
"LG P990 'Optimus 2X' dual-core smartphone.
"Runs Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3), no promises of any more updates though.
"Performance is up there with the SGSII, but overheating and random reboots are normal."
...yeah, I wouldn't buy it.
/rant
My partner has an Xperia Pro. Apparently ICS is available (officially) for it? I've not seen it yet, and she's not willing to unlock it and get CM9 onto it. :/
Anyhoo, this forum is not the place to ask that.
...of course, that's at no fault of the community. Mostly it's LG's fault. Not necessarily for not releasing updates/drivers/etc, but for using awful, closed hardware.
Ah well. I'll hang around in the meantime. I'm not much of a dev, so I'm with the lurking crowd, complaining in these threads about LG and NVIDIA with the rest of y'all.
For those devs hanging around here, <3 you guise. Thanks for making this phone usable, maybe even enjoyable. ICS devs in particular, your patience (if any remains) is amazing, putting up with LG's silence and peeps like us demanding a 100% stable ROM. I imagine most of us understand the situation though. ^_^

Paranoid its also based on cm9.. All the features ARE the same with some slightly differences in ui.. All they have theme engine all the have toggles all they have integrated weather, all they have extended power menu, all they have t9 dialer, all they have twickable cpu/gpu settings, all they have color correction settings, all they have power savings options.. In the end they are all the same as for the tablet mode I have a tablet and it's not attractive to me in fact I like phone mode more and Wish I could get a paranoid android for tablet that turns the tablet into phone mode lol.. Well at least jelly bean brings that to the table I love the fact that the notification bar its in the top side of the screen just like the phone does.. So Google managed to consolidate even more the OS for tablet and phones making it looks and feels almost the same on both..

So the problem is that there are no problems with the Galaxy Nexus, which makes it boring?
I aslo sold my O2X yesterday and bought a SGS3, what a difference. Like going from a Fred Flinstone "car" to a Lamborghini Spyder.
I'm starting to get a little twitchy as to weather it was a good idea or not to get the lte version?
I'm really beginning to think that development isnt looking good for us. At the moment all we have is roms with lots of options but not roms from major cooks like darky rom, miui, cyanogen, etc?
No disrespect to the devs that are making roms but I do feel that there isn't a big enough audience to warrant devs developing/porting roms for this handset?
What do you think?
Sent from my GT-I9305 using xda premium
yeah the i9305 development is nothing compared to the i9300, unfortunately
Well the s3 has been out longer so I would expect there to be a lot more roms for it but there don't seem to be much buzz about the lte?
I thought having 2 gig of ram would of been tempting to a Dev to make a super fast smooth rom but it seems the difference between the two is quite a lot!

yes, it's surprising and disappointing. I wouldn't expect much change, because soon the devs' attention will shift towards the newer devices like the s4

Luckily our device is so much like the S3 and Note 2 LTE that that doesn't really matter, all we need is a little push over the edge and we'll at least have CyanogenMod builds.
Yeah, its the only reason I have not bought one yet Seriously, CM will be a beast on this phone if it ever gets ported
Edit:
Was seriously looking at the N4 but all the shortcomings (fixed battery, breaking glass, short battery life and no ext sd) make me come back to the S3.

If you are a flasher, well, no :/
I use to be a flasher with a galaxy ace, so i buy this phone, but because the unique processor, theres not to much development :/
But the phone with stock its awesome, even i feel it more fast and powerfull than a S3 or Xperia Z, i have both phones
And the battery amazing!
Enviado desde mi XT890 usando Tapatalk 2
It depends.
If you're a flashalcoholic because you want the best of your phone in a fully customized way I'd say yes maybe: stock is already very well made and there's a few great mod/rom to improve it. Theming is certainly not on a CM rom level, but still there's a few mods.
If you're a flashalcoholic for the sake of geeking with your phone and try new stuff very often the answer is no. As previously said, development is quite confidential, and the risks of bricking this phone is also quite high (for noobs like me may I add; I miss my old Xperia easy panic restore).
Otherwise the phone itself is awesome if it fits your needs: well built, compact, great performance and battery life, I'd would not trade it for any other phone.
I used to flash like crazy on my older phones and got this because I knew it would be less possible to do so. That said, I have still found plenty to play with and enough development exists to play around on weekends without modifying something every night.
Aside from that - best form factor for me in terms of size/battery life compared to any other phone I've picked up.
Thank you guys for your reply. :highfive:
Hey guys just got an n4, I'm spending sometime going through the n4 forums and seeing what everyone has to say. Its good to be working with a much larger community than the s2 had. Having more options for roms feels great. I was a little gun shy about flashing a new recovery to my n4 but I took the plunge. I gotta say it was rather easy and not at all like I expected. I'm sure that the community has had lots of time to streamline things though.
Just to say what happen to my s2. I was flashing twrp in which I had downloaded from goo manager. I rebooted the phone and that was the last time I had saw any life from it. It previously had been having a hard time using any other kernel than the one that came with the rom. I tried everything I possibly could and still had no luck. Being Dependant on my phone I had to get another. Originally I had decided on the nexus 4 because of current price down at tmobile. Then i decided I was going to sell something of mine to cover it and i would get whatever I wanted. I had been wanting a s3 and was all set on that. keep in mind this wasnt a planned buy so me getting an htc one was out of the question. I played with a demo s3 and experience a little bit of lag. That same little bit of lag that I ignored when I bought the s2. Then I played with the n4 and experience non. I was sold and at a much lower down.needless to say I was impressed. So here I sit with my new n4 rooted and rocking a custom rom and Im enjoying the out right smoothness of it all.
Just thought id share my story of how I ended up here.
Welcome to the club!
The N4 is an awesome device that's for sure!

The S4 is a rush job, the software is pure crap and needs at least 2 to 3 updates to run as it should. Samsung realy dropped the ball on the S4 imo.
The S3 is much smoother and faster than the S4 though the hardware is less powerfull. The S4 does have a very good camera, great speaker and a very good 1080p screen.

You should install a terminal and check how your CPU was binned. Seeing you just recently got it you'll notice that the back heats up quite a lot. That's normal. But you can definitely check the CPU binning and UV and it helps with the heat. It did for me. But that's just a suggestion
If you do want to do that I'll save you the trouble of looking how to check, well if you don't know how to..
Install android terminal
And busybox
Type in su
Reboot
Open terminal
Type su
Type dmesg | greps acpuclk
(Alternately: dmesg | greps PVS)
You'll get a couple lines of code
Either slow, nominal, fast, or faster.
It seems majority of people have fast. The better the binning the more your CPU can handle undervolting.

Android 4.3 probably won't be pushed for at least another 10-15 days... That's plenty of time to check out PA... I would suggest try it now then flash back to stock for the upgrade... Then wait till all the custom ROMs incorporate 4.3 into their builds... Then you can maybe even try another ROM for more flavour
In my opinion CM is better than PA by far... But... PACman which is a blend of PA, CM and AOPK is the best of all worlds... Do give it a try

Thinking of upgrading from the nexus 4. Want to be able to use 4G in the uk.
Pros/Cons of upgrading, has anyone else done this?
I did exactly this, loved the Nexus 4 initially but the lack of 4g, limited storage (despite using Google music) and budget looks prompted Mr to upgrade.
Haven't looked back, absolutely loving the xperia z. Beautiful screen and for once a clean simple skin that actually brings useful apps with it.

Not really, I see more and more developers making new roms each week.
Whats the best ROM/Kernel combo at the moment?
I am actually considering same.. I have been monitoring Z section of xda for a while now.. The Nexus 4 is a great phone.. One of the best phones I have ever used. Just the battery life is a pain. My concern about the Z from what I have read is the screen and the lag.. I experience absolutely zero lag on the nexus 4 and even though it's and the Z use the same chipset my guess is the bigger screen resolution of the Z means the GPU gets to work harder. This might probably be responsible for the much talked about lag.
Is anyone here running their device with cyanogen? How fluid is the device with cm10? Answer to this question might decide whether I get the Z.. Every other thing seem on point with the device.

The smoothest an android phone can get
In the design aspect. The XZ and the HTC one is very elegant. And made from Premium materials the XZ is water proof and HTC one has beats speakers and good screen both are good choices and I will not go for Samsung if I were you its new features is not very useful and its made of plastic and dont look at the benchmark it doesnot Make a diffrence

tbh, I like the stock feel of Sony's android software.
It would just be a custom Kernel id be chasing, and at the moment, there only seems to be one!
I was thinking of changing to the XZ from the nexus 4. But I am worried about developer support is it gonna keep coming for the Z or will it die out when something new comes along? Any input would be helpful.

Check the android development forum for xperia z and determine it ur self.. As far as I can tell, definitely having support from veteran dev..
Nexus 4 - Obviously more development, compact.
XZ- Expandable storage, Water resistant, looks, camera, screen ( I've seen reviews saying its viewing angles are bad and washed out but on one on one comparison it felt way way better than the nexus's screen)
Issues : Wifi strength (already solved by custom ROM/Kernel),
Heating- If ur planning to play heavy games for a long time then put on a pair of gloves cos this thing heats up like a pan.
Lag - Wat ? where ? The lag on the stock launcher when swiping from leftmost page to right is a launcher glitch and it doesn't happen anywhere else. (nexus 7 is also running on the same chipset so no worries)
Sidenotes : Development wise i think its pretty good I've used couple of stock based ROMs (which were great) and almost all of the AOSP based ones (which are awesome)
Kernel for stock is just the Doomlord Kernel but i think he has done a brilliant job with it, lots of tweaks added and by the looks of his to-do list i think he'll cover all possible tweaks and features. So i'm satisfied with that. (his recent kernel were buggy don't know why after 11 versions he got a buggy kernel out, but that would be rectified very soon i'm sure)
Battery life- I get around 3-4 hours an average and standby of a day and a couple of hours, also i haven't let the percentage drop below 20% so if u are willing to let it drop till 2-3 add 40-45 mins more to the screen on.
I'm currently running CArbon 1.7 and Carbon kernel.
I too had the option of One, S4, Nexus 4 then i choose XZ, I don't know why but i just fell in love with the device and never looked back anyway thats just my stupid rant.
