I have bought a GT-I8190 (Unbranded/Unlocked) in Spain, which operates in 3G frequency band 900/1900/2100. The problem is that I live in Argentina, and here the 3G frequency is 850Hz. I would like to know if there is any hardware limitiation for the 3G frequency band or is just a firmware limitation. I've read that flashing a latinamerican modem (I8190L version) may solve the problem. Has anyone try this? What can I do?
Please let me know, cause i'm tired of dealing with EDGE.
Sorry for my english, i speak spanish.
Thank you!
I dont know about hardware differences, if there is any.
You could try to extract modem.bin from i8190L firmware and put it a .tar and flash with odin, but i'm not sure thats enough.
There's also a service menu if you type * # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * # *
This is for SGS, but I think menus are quite similar.

Is there any risk of bricking the phone by doing this? I want to be sure of what I'm doing. If something does wrong, is there any way to go back to stock modem?
Thank you!

I didn't find it either but I was thinking it might be there if you flash a modem for that frequency.

I don't think there is a chance of bricking it by changing modem. I've done it on my P7500 tab and my galaxy wonder without crying.
Question is if Odin will let it pass, and if so, maybe you'll also need to flash cache.img to get the "sec_csc.zip" for csc code and apn settings to be correct set in system. Not sure..
Edit: Seems like odin fails on modem.

I8190 Problem
Hey people,
Got the same problem here, did not see the difference between the I8190 and the I8190L and now I´m dealing with the problem of being connected only in EDGE, dou you guys already solved the problem???
If´s that so, please let us know.
Same problem here
I have excactly the same problem. Got a GT-I8190N, and here they use 850mhz :crying:
have searched every corner of the web, but havent found a solution. If anyone manages to make these things use 850mhz band PLEASE tell us how you did it.
Tried but failed
Fon anyone interested, i flashed GT-I8190N my phone using a GT-I8190L firmware for my country / operator, and i was still unable to use 3G internet. only Edge.
The phone worked fine in all other aspects (except the NFC feature was gone of course), but still no 3G. i guess the bands are not only determined by software, but also by hardware.
By now i guess its safe (for me) to say, i will have to learn to live with Edge, or get another phone. :crying:

Yes, actually that was the first thing i tried.
I downloaded the Whole firmware for the GT-I8190L for my local operator (MX Telcel), then i extracted the modem .bin file from it, and in odin i flashed it to the phone.
Phone worked fine, but still only edge.
So i decided to flash the whole firmware just in case, did so with odin, when my phone restarted i had the cheesy, bloated, horrible load animation my POS operator forces on all its phone, but still i was only able to use edge. no 3g.
Went to the phone service menu (if thats what its called?) dialing *#0011# then using the BACK menu option ->network -> etc. and still the 850mhz band option was missing. only got 900mhz (same as before).
At this point i was now stucked with the extra-extra-extra crappy logos and tons of crapware my provider installs on the phones, still without 3g, and all the NFC setting options dissapeared on the settings menu, but otherwise the phone was not bricked at all, it worked fine
So i downloaded this unbranded firmware:
Edit: (xda wont let me put the link, but its an unbranded firmware called I8190NXXAMD3_I8190NOXAAMD3_DBT)
wich is for the GT-I8190N version (not L), flashed it with odin, and now my phone is back to the way it was, i have my NFC settings back, got rid of ALL operator logos and bloatwares (now i only see the nice samsung animation on boot), and everything is working fine.
Except for 3G of course, im still stuck on EDGE.
Thanks alot for your answer. Now we know for sure it's based on hardware.

Sorry for bringing up this old thread..
Does anyone know if there is a way of replacing the phone's internal antenna/modem to adequate it to the 850mhz network? It'd be cheaper than buying a new phone..

i got galaxy note N7000B from vodafone australia. i cannot download anything more than 7mb unless i am on stock vodafone rom which is LRI.
I tried many another stock as well as custom rom but same prob every time. can anyone please let me know why it is happening and what could be it solution. thanks a lot in advance
i noticed that you sayed N7000(B), this is the first time i hear about this galaxy note, is it the same as N7000 but with nfc maybe?
have you tried to download a file bigger than a 7mb on another wifi router, try using 3g if you have, and maybe if your phone is locked it will prevent you from doing something unless you are in you carrier's softare so try unlocking your phone.
if none of these helped you, wait for experts to answer you
thanks for reply
yes i got N7000(B). itz vodafone australian handset. and it also do not have NFC. yes it was locked on network but i did unlocked it.
i can download any file size via wifi but not through 3g or H.

I have a question I'm hoping an expert can answer. I pretty new to the Android world so I'm trying to wrap my head around a few things..
So I bought a (prepaid/locked) S5830T from a store over here, and proceeded to unlock and upgrade to the latest
stock Gingerbread firmware (2.3.6). So now when I boot up, instead of S5830T, I get S5830. All good.
Now the phone runs fine, but I have an issue with 3G data in particular.
The "T" suffix appears to relate to the 'Telstra network' (which the phone was originally locked to).
According to this link - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
Telstra operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 850hz / 2100hz for 3G.
The carrier I am on (Optus) operates on 900Hz / 1800hz for 2G and 900hz / 2100hz for 3G.
So I've flash the modem file from the Optus firmware package (Modem_S5830_XWKT3) hoping that that would enable
the 3G band that is currently not working.
(What happens ins 2G/"H" works fine, but when the phone switches to "3G" I lose all data connections)
But Alas, I still have the same problem..
So I'm wondering is there hardware in the phone that is preventing connection to the network, or do I need to find a more
appropriate Modem file that operates on the frequencies above?
Many Thanks!

Can you find the original Telstra firmware, extract the modem from that and flash it?
Can you get hold of a Telstra SIM and see if you still have the same issues?
The T doesn't necessarily signify Telstra but just a slightly different version of the S5830
It's the same with SGS2 there is a GT-i9100 and GT-i9100T (I have the T version purchased in Thailand so nothing to do with Telstra)
Because I have used this phone in Australia also, I've noticed that T modems perform better on my SGS2 than non-T versions.
I've found Optus coverage (in Melbourne) to be pathetic so I always have to ensure I'm using a T modem when I'm there.

Hey, Thanks for the reply ApriliaM3.
Yeah I know the T doesn't necessarily mean Telstra, but was pretty sure it meant there was a different modem to stock (as with your SGS2).
Which is why I reverted back to stock. I thought that may have been more accommodating of all frequencies..
That's very interesting what you say regarding your T modem.
I believe I can extract the modem from my base backup, so will give that a try.
As for the Telstra sim, that might be a little harder, but I'll try the modem first and then try to get a sim.
Thanks for the info!

I get the impression that my requirement for a T modem when I'm in Melbourne has more to do with Optus and their pathetic coverage than it has to do with the modem. When I'm in Thailand, it doesn't seem to matter what modem I use... they all get good signals and I have no problem with data either. I'm also a member on Whirlpool but I rarely go there any more... still it's quite a handy and informative site for many things
Hi, I bought the I8910 from German Amazon and my girlfriend brought it to Ecuador for me. Little did I know the phone doesn't pick up any 3g coverage, only edge, which means I have a glorified iPod in my hands. I've tried many things without success and I was wondering if someone here could help me put the modem from the UBAMA1 build or the whole firmware (so far I've only managed to get a Fail message on Odin when it starts installing the modem)

I'm not sure you can turn a i8190 to a i8190L just by changing modem. Maybe thats why odin fails. I don't know..just a thought.

Hello Friends,
I am from India and I use Airtel Carrier which has following frequency Bands
GSM-900/1800 (EDGE) -- Working fine
2100 MHz UMTS, HSPA+ -- Not working
2300 MHz TD-LTE -- Not working
I am using rooted Galaxy GT-I9305T and running Latest Cyanogenmod official ROM 4.4.4.
I only able to servive on 2G band (EDGE), I am not able to search any 3G or 4G frequencies here.
I search many forums, threads to resolve this issue and I found couple tricks using *# on keypad but nothing works.
I have no Idea how to make work my phone on 3g or 4g band. Does anyone able to solve this issue here. Please let me know.
Thank You,
Regards,
Sajjad Hussaini
Please anyone who can help me...
This is issue can be fixed at ROM or Kernal level or hardware level ???
Also, I guess my phone is locked at 1800 Mhz as Australian network Telestra, I don't know. As nothing mentioned. when I start the phone it shows only I9305

as far as i know the bands are hardwared. You cant change them with program. No idea why 3g wont work. Try installing stock rom and then test it. Dont think kernel has anything to do with it, kernel is conencted to cpu. As i said ,try stock rom with odin, that usualy works. Then install cm again.

You might need to go to samsung repair centre and check it out. I had a prepaid sim card and the carrier with who i was with back then they only had 3G. Until I change carrier who had 4G service I was still getting 3G. After calling support here and their, got my phone checked and it was a hardware problem, lucky it was still under the 2year warranty. I contacted samsung and handed over my phone the repair centre and finally my 4G had worked.
Urgent Need Assistance,
I unfortunately updated the modem from below xda link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/downgrading-4-3-to-4-2-1-network-issue-t2531221
I installed the Patched MG4 Modem into my I9305 which one of the person had shown I9305 thread, thing that It will fix my problem.
I happen to loose my IMEI number, I have a backup in Phiz recovery, it is also not working when trying to restore.
and also I have backup using the EFS Professional v2.0. Now the problem is.. At current situation I am not able to connect to my PC using my phone
as it is showing driver no found for " Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM" in my Windows 8 device manager. I have installed all the drivers using of Samsung including Kies and Kies3.
Please can anyone help me to fix this issue. I NEED MY IMEI no back. I have backup in my laptop and also made an EFC backup in mobile using Phiz recovery.
Only if am able to install that driver I can get into my ADB Server. Please help me
Hi,
can You help me pls with ny LTE i9305 S3? I have problem with signal (antena OK, any sim any network), is just good outside but whan I go somwhere in house, is very bad or stop working network. I am not sure if can be some chip on motherboard problem, or if I solve this problem by some flash.
Thanks
Does it happen when you go inside in any place or just in your house? If it's just in your house then clearly it is just a problem of coverage on your area. I9305 international version supports bands 800, 1800 & 2600 for LTE where both 1800 and 2600 have bad coverage inside buildings. Check as another test if selecting 2g (pure GSM 900) you still have bad coverage. Can you try with a SIM of another carrier? This could also be the definitive test.
If it is a common problem (anywhere, any carrier...), then maybe you can solve it by flashing with Odin a different modem baseband (also called radio).
You have some basebands for download here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/djb-tgp/files/CWM_Flashables/Modems/4.3 Modems/
I'm using the XXUENA2 with very good results, been used before others also with no major problems (XXUEMK1 and XXUFNI3 for example).
This is my "About device" screenshot where you can see the Baseband I'm using. Works fine in Europe as well as in Brasil:

Hi, thanks for Your reply
my problem is in house, but anyway problem with signal is without any sim always.
So I have now 4.4.4 and pls can You show me where I can download good one modem for this Android for my LTE? I´ll try it
thanks so much
EDIT: I have one. Is South Africa 4.3, there is XXUENA2 Modem, so I´ll try it and let You know.
EDIT2: So I have problem, I can´t downgrade 4.4.4 to 4.3 because will EFS faulty, so You have some idea how I can choose repair my modem for signal repair?
Hey Paul...
1) About signal: how do you expect to get signal without SIM? Or maybe are you meaning signal for just the 112 emergency call?
2) Modem/baseband: I already provided the link in my original post, check it.
3) No need to downgrade. You will only flash the modem/baseband without touching any partition, neither the ROM nor the EFS. You can do that via Odin (check any Odin How-To document -search Google-) or via the recovery if you have TFRT or QWM (at recovery menu select flash zip file and choose the one for the modem -you need to copy the zip file previously to your sd card or internal memory).
