[Q] Is HTC good about android updates? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The only thing stopping me from getting this phone is I feel like it will get outdated pretty fast due to not being updated by HTC fast enough. It is already shipping with 4.1.2 even though 4.2.2 is already out.
I've never owned a HTC phone before so I'm wondering how long it will be until the 4.2 update. Also Key Lime Pie is coming out hopefully this summer, so then it will be even longer before they update to 5.0.

To put it bluntly, No. HTC are aweful at releasing updates. If the the 5.0 update for the One is anything like Jellybean for the One X it will be a joke.

What are you talking about? JB release on the One X is fantastic, they actually implemented everything correctly which made it blazing fast... I'd like to hear an explanation

Also depends on if you get a branded device, you have to wait for the carrier to test, fill it with bloatware etc before they release to their customers.
Unbranded devices usually get the updates etc pretty quick, and if you're rooted, you will likely get an update from devs before HTC even release it in general.

no they are not good my sensation xe dying on İCS very slow galaxy s2 had jelly bean for 2 mounths i guess sensation may never see jelly bean.

The updates for these types bring jack anyway. Pure android deffo worth the wait. HTC all your waiting us new sense variant. Nothing else you'll really notice. If you want to notice get the n5 when it's released

Once the update was finally rolled out JB was fantastic on the One X but it took HTC months and months to eventually get it rolled out to every One X because they did it based on CID.

I don't know man. I didn't see much difference

They probably didn't put 4.2.2 on there because it didn't add much to android. In fact some people will tell you it made it slower and worse. All it did was put some widgets on the lock screen, new widgets and bragging rights to people that have it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

4.2.2 is an update only made for aosp roms. Tell me what changes on 4.2.2 that will be implemented other than the version number? Gesture typing? Lockscreen widgets? Photo sphere? Already existed since sense 4. Im not sure about photosphere but i heard its 360 panorama which is also doable

HTC is pretty good with updates, it is always one of the first or even the first with updates to new android versions. People who say they are slow need to look at other OEM's and see how long it takes them...
And even if you can install a newer android version aosp rom, you will find that the older sense rom usually feels more like the upgrade compared to the newer aosp rom.

HTC take longer than samsung with updates because they do have a far smaller team. Samsung is a massive company so it can probably test & develop many updates for loads of devices. HTC took a bit longer in releasing the JB update but it was far less buggy than the SGS3 update.

I think we will see fast updates with the HTC one as this handset is definitely make or break for HTC
I have a branded 3 handset who have become very fast at pushing out updates
On my note 2 3 UK pushed out quicker than my unbranded handset they released 4th Jan but it was around early march when my unbranded finally got the update

It wont be the same with HTC. The One X update was delayed for a month or so whilst 3 branded it.

After installing 4.2 on my Nexus 7, I couldn't tell the difference really and I actually found those lock screen widgets annoying, but as already stated Sense 3 brought this to the table back with the Sensation (if you count the lock-screen shortcuts as widgets, otherwise Sense 4) so personally I don't think it's a big deal.
The problem HTC is going to have, is people that work in phone shops. They just want to sell a phone in my experience and I can just imagine them saying 'but the S4 is much better than the One as the One's software is already outdated' or something along those lines.
At the end of the day 4.2 will bring ABSOLUTELY NOTHING more than what 4.1 already gives. The only addition would be whatever HTC adds onto Sense. With devices such as the Sensation or Desire, HTC was awful at supporting them as the Desire was already out of support after 10 months. However, as also previously stated, with the One X HTC really ramped things up. Jellybean arrived just a few weeks after Samsung, and brought a much larger plethora of updates along with it.
Don't worry, HTC got you :good:

This is HTC, not Apple.

The only one to blame with the delay of updates are the carriers. Just like what's happening between tmobile and the One S. JB for the One S was released last december for unbranded phones, and it's almost april but tmobile hasn't released JB yet. That doesn't mean that will also happen to the One, but imo, it's the carriers' fault why HTC is always known from being slow in updating their phones, even if they aren't really.

Incredible S!!!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/htc-refreshes-android-lineup-with-incredible-s-desire-s-and-wil/
I just wish the resolution was a bit higher, but i'm not going to complain. Really weird that it will be shipping with Android 2.2 (in Q2 of this year???) Also no mention of it being a 4G phone. And the biggest bummer, it doesn't say anything about it coming stateside
How about you guys, thoughts on the Incredible S?
Ah, you got to it before me. Anyway, the rotating capacitive buttons mean a rotating Rosie, so maybe we can finally see a Sense 2.5 build for the Incredible that's almost native, right? That being said, the picture clearly shows that there isn't an optical trackpad anymore, but I don't think anyone will really miss it.
To be honest its sad to see HTC's lineup. I honestly don't care about dual core, but I don't think they made any of their new phones dual core. Most of them were just barely updated from what they were the previous year. I really like HTC phones, but I think they need to step up their game to keep up with Moto, LG, Samsung, and any others. Their tablet doesn't even have honeycomb.

The recent announcements are hardly their full line up, but exactly what you said, updates of last year, as well as a few low to mid end "gimmick" devices (Facebook button, anyone?). Those are all intended to be global phones. Don't worry, I think we can still expect flagship phones like the Thunderbolt, Inspire 4G, and the much more recently rumored Revolver.(The latter two may be AT&T, don't remember). At least, I hope we can.
We can't expect any of these phones state side anytime soon. It's usually 6-12months before we see any phones that are "NEW".
That has slowly been changing though with carriers state side getting their own designed phones to compete with each other. I'm curious to see if T-mobile will get anything SUPER AWESOME like Sprint and Verizon have been getting. T-Mobiles line of MyTouch phones don't appeal to me design wise and Sense is the only way to go.
The Incredible S specs have Europe/Asia - HSPA: 900/AWS/2100 MHz and that should mean the with AWS it will work with Tmobiles 3G stateside. Looks like I'll be buying unlocked again if that's true. The Incredible S and the Flyer are the only 2 devices that list AWS in the Bands. So I hope it's true.

I say that because that is usually the case. The US always gets phones later then the rest of the world. This is changing somewhat. It used to be a year+ before we saw phones. Our phone tech was always behind that of the world and still is. Look at the HD2. It came out in August/Sept of 09 around the world and when a US carrier got it it was like March/April of 2010. At least the gap is closing and the US now has some phones that the world doesn't but we still miss out on most products and still have to wait for others to reach our shores. Unless you but unlocked of course.
Some are saying that the specs are disapointing for the Incredible S how ever once you use it and compare against the Desire you should be impressed, I am and have both; the Inc S is far superior to the Desire IMHO.
Hi Guys,
I have a question about incredible s internal space. before i had desire hd and its shows 1.07 GB without installing any apps. and it was 1.5GB. now i bought incredible s it also shows 1.06GB internal space without installing any personal apps. and its is 1.1GB by htc. so what is the difference whether its stock rom is small one or it has same 1.5 GB like desire hd.
Mine arrived ... But I'm still at work ... aaaaah ...

how is the screen on the incredible s compared to the desire and the desire hd. i have a desire amoled but i purchased a hd and was not impressed with the colours ,it looked washed out.
if it matches the slcd of the 1st desire after they changed from amoled i would be happy to take the plunge.

The Atrix will be getting an upgrade in the third quarter it is on Moto's site.

True, but all manufacturers will do that. The Vivid has Sense on it.
I switched from the Atrix to the Vivid. I still have them both. For me, its all about HTC Sense and apps included.
Atrix Exchange/corporate email is horrible. Most phones EXCEPT the HTC Sense phones have horrible Exchange email. Sense also has a great agenda and calendar widget. It even has Task support with widget.
I had to buy $50 worth of apps and widgets on the Atrix to give me the convenience and productivity of the Vivid and Sense.
Battery life, screen size and CPU are trivial to me compared to functionality for business tasks.

I made the switch from the ATRIX to the Vivid with an early upgrade, meaning unlike many people in here I paid $350. I took a gamble and so far could not be happier. I honestly hated my ATRIX when it was on stock, it was not until I got on CM7 that I actually enjoyed the phone. Being on the vivid just feels more solid and flows very nicely. So far the only dislike for the phone is the lack of S-OFF that makes flashing roms more complicated then it should be.
That beign said all around I love the VIVID. Alternatively there was a recent AT&T article that stated the ATRIX was to receive ICS "in the coming months"
While this is not the light at the end of a tunnel, the last time AT&T said that the Vivid became the first (or one of the first) non Galaxy phones to get ICS. So you may consider holding out and seeing what comes in the next few months.
Honestly i had a Galaxy S II and i (LOVED) it. but i couldnt keep wating for ICS. I was flashing so much not because i wanted to see new things. it was because i was bored. So i took a gamble. I figure HTC is better with updates than samsung(truth) So i got the Vivid On Thursday. Friday a software updated came to my phone it downloaded it and ran it. Next thing i know i have ICS. I couldnt believe it. So with that being said. Get the phone i love it!!!

hopefully. A dev on rootzwiki tried to port a htc one rom to the vivid with sense 4.0 and he couldnt. He said that the new sense was incompatible with our rill aka our radio. Now htc might be able to change that but you never know.
Only time will tell...but being a 2011 phone we are more towards the bottom of the list...but near the top of the bottom of the list since this phone is only 2 months away from being a 2012 phone...

The One Line (X+, X(L), S, and V) will get it first. Then more than likely Desire X and the EVO 4G LTE, as those are the the only other 2012 HTC Androids with a Snapdragon S4. The only other 2012 devices, the Desire V and Desire C, are Snapdragon S1 and I doubt HTC is going to try to put JB on that (however if they do, that's a good sign for us). Then we hit the 2011 devices - The Explorer (another S1 device), then the Rezound, Vivid, Amaze, Sensation, EVO 3D, Sensation XE, all Snapdragon S3 devices, and in my opinion, the next worthy contenders for JB (the Rezound and Vivid being the most recently released). All other 2011 devices are S2 (Sensation XL, Incredible S, Desire S). Will we ever see an official carrier release? HIGHLY doubted. But if HTC really cares and they actually try - there should be some leaked RUUs to play with
(All Info from here - DEVICES PROCESSORS)
IRL - I bet they only give releases for S4 devices and say screw the rest of us.
There is a variant (very small market) of the One S (codename VilleC2), that is actually a Snapdragon S3. This is the device from which Rafy was trying to port Sense 4.0. Since then, they've also gotten a ICS 4.0.4/Sense 4.1 RUU (in football's thread) as well. I don't know what the actual problem was with Sense 4.0 not supporting our RIL, but if there are any porters out there who want to give 4.1 a shot, that's your best bet. And IF HTC gives them JB, again, a good place from which to start trying a port.
I think we have a good chance. Our device was the first AT&T device to get ics officially, maybe even the first snapdragon s3 device too. TBH the sensation without a doubt will get it, and the vivid follow shortly. The rezound is most likely never since verizon=noupdate4u
I am seriously not holding my breath for this.

If it were up to htc I'd say sure but it's not. AT&T has the final say in this. Originally htc had planned an ics update for the desire HD that was later canceled however the identical American model, the inspire 4G never even got a shot. AT&T wants you to buy a one x or one x+ so I don't see it happening

It would help greatly with cm10 development. I definitely want it. Jelly bean is a very nice update, and would speed up our phones greatly, as well as giving us a fast and stable Google now. And notifications are so much better.
Maybe the raider, velocity, or holiday might get it. Really or is unfair how carriers block these updates from us. Not giving me an update is just inconveniencing me, because I'm not going to spend money on their absurd no contract prices. And with the nexus 4 out there and me considering it heavily, they are just going to loose out on future upgrades and contracts from me.
I usually get $500 in Christmas cash every year, but still I hate spending most of it on a phone, so much other things I'd rather buy, not to mention I have credit card debt I'd like to take out. Here's hoping for a breakthrough in the next month, either an announcement for an update or a cracked ril opening the door for aosp/aokp/and cyanogenmod
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I wouldn't hold my breath, this phone bombed pretty heavily in a lot of markets. Here in Canada they were giving them away for free on contract by like, February.
We'll know whether we're getting it as soon as one a phone on AT&T gets updated to Jelly Bean. Our phone was the first phone on AT&T (and america) to receive an ICS update, and with it they announced every phone that would be getting an ICS update. So I imagine they'll follow suit with this update
No way At&t is making me a buy a phone without an sdcard slot and non removable battery, just for jellybean. The hox or hox+ ain't worth the money. I'd at least want to see sense 4 on our phone, even if it is ics.

Some people have a lot of music/movies/pics...and if they are an audiophile, or soon to be an audio phile they won't settle for anything under 320kbpseaning the average song is 10mb...so 100 songs is about 1 GB...6400 is all you can get with 64gbs...and that's if your only sticking with 320kbps, most audiophiles will go with flac which is an even bigger size...so your looking at just a couple thousand songs on 64gb, and then if you want to have a ROM or two handy, that's half a GB right there, what about some room for camera pics and videos...you'd probably want at least a gb free for that...apps? I think you get the point, for the average user 64gb is enough...but to those who will only use the highest quality music/video files cause they can hear/see the differnce between low quality ones...then 64gb isn't even close to enough....
I'm not an audiophile myself, but I'm close to being one, I have a nice pair of actual headphones, and if the music is under 320kbps I will not download or buy it...listen to an iTunes 128kbps version of a song, then listen to a 320kbps version and you'll understand why...the sound is a lot more full in 320kbps...I have a total of 46gbs on my infuse cause I have a 32gb SD card...not even close to enough, still missing quite a bit of my music, I only have 628mb free which I save for the occasion that I may need to download something...
Anyways...I guess you don't need more then 64gb, but that's one reason a lot of people would want more than 64gb, cause we are audio/video snobs lol
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk 2
I used to have a zune 32 gig and 16-20 was all the more I ever kept it full, if you need more than that your probably not listening to all your music anyway. Every mp3 I have encoded from the cd used lame alt preset standard, variable bit rate, gives you the highest quality at the lowest size, should be good enough for anybody really.
Also until recently, the largest sd you could get was 32,so typically 48 gigs was the max you could get anyway

[Q] Good time to buy a new phone?

I hate to make another good bye thread, but I think its time for me to upgrade. Our dev community is all but dead (besides for the CM10 JB Rom), and I think I just need a new phone.
Is it a good time to get a new phone? Im looking for a top of the line high end phone on AT&T. I was looking at the One X+ but the Tegra 3 chip seems like its a little old. Im also not a big fan of the LG Optimus. Im really liking the Droid DNA but the fact that there is 16gb non expendable storage and the off contract price is $600 (it comes unlocked so it works on AT&T) is kind of a deal breaker.
Should I Wait for CES and hope that more Snapdragon 4 Pro, 1080p phones will come? Or should I just get the One X+?
I would just buy a Nexus 4. I just did. It isn't here yet, but it is going to be aweeesome.
As soon as Google gets more, I'm buying a nexus 4 also! I'm still going to keep this phone as a backup/tethering device (I need LTE speeds to tether).

But then Im stuck with no lte, 16gb of storage, and its still $300. I would rather go with the one x+ then.
My question was really if it seems like there will be a new wave of android phones in the near future (CES.)

I guess I can overlook those things because I hate the bull **** of skins like sense and touch wiz. Also too, I can't stand the service providers bastardizing the software with their bloat.
But to better answer your question, CES always has new stuff rolling out, but it's really up to what you want. This ain't like the iPhone where there's only one phone a year to look forward to. There's always a new phone coming out with Android on it. Look at how fast the one X+ came out after the one X.... If there's not a phone right now that makes you want to run out and buy it, wait till that one comes around... Or until your current phone breaks!

Thats the problem, my Vivid is slow as anything and is getting awful battery life running desensed. With a new phone im either going to sacrifice LTE and storage or processor and ram.
There is stock based, miui or desensed roms it's not that bad

there all stockbased, or have a bit of the htc frameworks in them since htc takes googles code, f*cks it up, moves everything around, and then releases it

I ain't going to lie, I would rather have a phone with more storage or an sd, a removable battery, and lte, but I just don't trust carrier phones anymore so I bought a nexus 4 and I am patiently waiting for it to get here, but figured the sacrifices would be worth it to not have to deal with the hurdles modern phones have just to delete unwanted bloatware, and have wifi tethering with no bs monthly charge.
I really love the one X plus, but I am a bit afraid of it. Afraid it's this year's vivid, a filler phone with locked down hardware and piss poor support. Honestly with my impatience over the nexus 4, I played with all the carrier phones and the answer is a no brainer. Galaxy s3!
Galaxy S3 is as close to a no compromise phone as it gets. Sure its only been dual core, but it's a bad ass dual core, and it's got 2 gigs of ram, and it just got its jelly bean update, and development is off the chain, hell its practically the flagship for the cm team! Accessories are on the level of apple products.. In fact by all means it's the anti iphone.
It looks good, and if you can't deal with TouchWiz, you have most likely an overwhelming amount of options.
Only downsides to it is if your a screen perfectionist you'll probably hate the pentile 4.8 inch 720p AMOLED screen. I personally think it's gorgeous and I can't even tell the difference between pentile and non pentile anyway and I prefer amoled anyway for better brightness, deeper blacks, and better battery life.
My other gripe with it is the dated button layout. I do like physical buttons over the nexuses virtual buttons as the virtual buttons sacrifice screen real estate, but I prefer the new layout as menu is just useless after ics.

To summarize if you can't deal with the sacrifices that come with the Nexus 4, then the Galaxy S3 is the ONLY phone worth buying! Okay well the note 2 as well if you're into ridiculously stupid large phones, a personal preference thing, I don't care for it myself

Good time to buy a new phone?
I know you posted this awhile ago, but, if you were to get a new phone this week, you'd literally be getting a new phone the week the main CM10 ROM issue for Holiday (AT&T in-call microphone) is solved.
So, no, if you're thinking of getting a new phone this week, I'd wait. We're going to have a ton of roms pouring in over the next few weeks.
Want to kill the lag? Put wcx's stock rom on, and leave it be! Seriously, any mods will just add lag, deal with sense 3.6 and put that rom on and you'll be happier. Trust me it's worked for me

Or run any of the cm10 builds...
I like PACMan...

I bought a optimus. Best phone ever. No bull****. Fast. Fast. Fast. Can have up to 80 gig storage. Most powerful quad core. Most powerful GPU. Most ram (2gigs). Fast. But I still play with this phone still Cuz I really like it.

Not a bad choice, it's the same phone as the nexus 4 but with lte, and an sd slot, and of course LGs customized version of ics instead of raw android 4.2. I considered one but am worried about development on it

Nexus 4 Overlooked?

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Does anyone else feel as though our beloved device is taking a back seat to the GE edition s4 and HTC one? For so long I was proud to be a nexus owner due to the promise of prompt updates. Now it seems that the above two devices are getting 4.3 leaks while we stand by and wonder WTF. They are great phones but so is the n4. So why is Google making them the first to get updated instead of staying true to form with their own device? I love my n4 but am starting to feel cheated by Google at the same time.
Didn't know the One had a leak too.

Google isn't in the habit of allowing leaks; they're happily working away on firmware for our device while HTC/Samsung employees leak firmware for theirs.
But Samsung and HTC one Google Edition updates are handled by Google like our n4 not by Samsung or HTC.

Both companies would still have their hands on it however.

No, they're handled by Samsung/HTC http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...play-edition-one-or-s4-oems-will-handle-otas/
No I don't think that's correct because you cannot flash the GE 4.3 on a non-google edition Samsung s4 or HTC one so why would they have their hands on pure android? Remember that there is no touchwiz or HTC sense on the GE devices.

So they can test it on the phones they're manufacturing.
And some more reading, Russel Holly has an incredibly high (100%?) batting percentage.

So much facepalm in one thread. Amazing.
google has nothing ro do with the updates for the ge edition phones, all they do is sell them. these are pure android phones, that arent supported by aosp, and still use propriatary files/drivers from samsung/htc.

I dont see where your getting your sources from and why youre so jealous.
4.3 can be flashed on certain s4's so long as they have the right processor.
http://www.redmondpie.com/download-...alaxy-s4-gt-i9505-right-now-stock-leaked-rom/
Updates are handled by the OEMs just google gives them the sources early and they have to make it work on their device. Its comparatively little work as they dont need to theme it but their GE sales compared to their normal sales are much lower so the OEMs wont care so much about updating so who knows when they'll get outdated.
When the N4 released the tech world went wild about it. People just about acknowledged these other devices. Its nothing in comparison.
Google Edition not Nexus.
Updates by OEMs not google so its not the nexus experience.
I seem to remember the Google io unveiling of the GE gs4 and they said that it would receive prompt ota updates directly from Google like all nexus devices.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I'd read Jean-Bapiste Queru's comments in the thread I posted to Android Google group.
Oh no, not this again...
Never been the jealous type... I just have thoughts about the situation and wanted input from the community. Because every search I do for 4.3 returns results for gs4 or HTC one.

prompt updates yes, from global somewhat. global releases them, then goes to samsung/htc to add their proprietary stuff, then gets released to the public. if they were aosp supported devices(had open source drivers and such), then the hand off to samsung/htc wouldnt need to happen. since they are pure android, not sense or touch wiz, the updates for them will still be much faster than normally would be.
Those devices are shipping with 4.2[.2]. The leas are just that, leaks. And even when they get 4.3 the devices will be less optimal than the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus based on the features they would be able to use in stock Android and the features they would loose by not having their manufacturers' proprietary coloring layered on top the Android OS.
I overlooked the Nexus 4 the first time because it was made by LG. I haven't had the best of luck with LG phones in the past. So, I got an Xperia P. It had battery charging issues, but THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST SCREEN OF ANY DEVICE! Perfect & bright in direct sunlight. So then I tried a few more phones including an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.
I ended up selling all the other phones and going with the N4. So glad I did. I prefer the customizable Android platform more, the wireless charging, and the POWER. All this for 1/2 of what comparable phones cost.
Just bought a Nexus 7 for use as a DSLR remote since Google lied about the USB OTG on N4. That's the other thing I missed about the Xperia P. USB OTG worked perfectly out of the box.
No, not even once
