camera improvement announced in custom rom , comparaison - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
i ve seen some ppl in the desc of their rom writing "camera improvement", but nothing much is said..and shows
is it possible to have picture comparaison, stock rom / custom rom? any feed back from users?
thx to mention what rom u used.
thxxx

so i guess the camera improvement announced is just some blabla, nobody seems to be able to show the difference with pure stock..

I've not seen any roms with camera improvements. Is doubt it anyway in the course of two weeks...
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

Providing a link to the ROM would help
And maybe quote the post that states camera improvement.
You could ask the developer in the thread too?
Or maybe just do the comparison yourself? Don't have the device? Oh well you can wait like the rest of us.

Rom wise I see no difference they wouldn't start messing with it yet?

for example revolution hd:
"Improved camera performance"
sometimes the jpeg encoding is mod to 100% that can be an improvement.
i ve asked already on this rom topic but the guy don t reply...

Pointless thread without telling us which rom. At least we can ask users to compare. zzzz

i just told you revolution HD

Yes, im afraid its all cut and pasted from his other rom threads if your talking about Revolution.
I dont think theres anything proprietary going on there, at least not yet in the case of camera tweaks (I was wondering too as it happens).
Would be better if it was explained what half these tweaks are sometimes, but I think in general, its a few nice things put there to differenciate between that and all the other `stock` roms, plus the usual cliches, i.e. zipalign, sqlite, kernel tweaks, blah blah woof woof.
Do update this if you get an answer..

If it's talking about jpeg compression then maybe it's possible. He could have just modified the media_profiles.xml on /system/etc/ and changed the compression number there.
Like this one
<ImageEncoding quality="100" />
<ImageEncoding quality="90" /> // This is the medium quality, u can set it to 100% to override if you wish
<ImageEncoding quality="80" /> // This is the low quality, u can set it to 100% to override if you wish
<ImageDecoding memCap="30000000" />

he must have changed all those highlighted in blue to 100
*note that the code I quoted didn't came from HTC One*

He's said in his thread it was just copy paste, no camera work was done.

well riyal, on my onex , i did that once, and camera wasn t working afterwards, dunno what went wrong

[Q] can't install apps

so i dropped my heroc the other day when getting it off the shelf so that i could create/port something for this phone, sense i was getting bored with my evo, and after i dropped it i picked it up and checked to make sure everything works but only thing that doesn't is installing apps
any suggestions for fixes besides replacing are welcome
also i'd like to know somethings people would like to see done on the hero:
any mod ports to the phone you'd like?
any rom ports you all would like to see?
would you like a new rom?
a new theme?
any app ideas?
anything? lol

If you really wanted to do something useful, you would get into improving our current driver situation. We have an open-source camera driver (which wraps the OEM camera driver) in the CyanogenMod tree, but it needs work, especially on the camcorder side (camcorder doesn't focus at present).
There's also still a lot of work needed on the GL side. We have the libgles_qcom.so file from previous ROM images, but it isn't 100% compatible with Gingerbread (missing textures in Quadrant, etc).
The YouTube player sometimes plays audio-only when viewing "HQ" videos. I suspect this is due to a missing video codec and/or related to the above GL issues. We need work done on various codecs.
There's plenty of work to be done in kernel space. The 2.6.35 kernel posted by s0be is significant progress, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Personally I would like to see more optimizations done on the kernel side because these will benefit all ROM images.
There are also various bugs in CyanogenMod that shouldn't be too difficult to fix, such as notification power widgets disappearing when changing themes. Check their issue tracker on Google Code to find some easy things to fix.
It would be awesome to see a fully-working 2.3.4 ROM image that was 100% AOSP and had completely working drivers. It would certainly make future development much easier and provide a nice base to build other ROM images from.
...oh, wait, that's right. You just want to "port" "tweaks"/themes/nonsense. Try fixing what we have right now before you give us more half-working junk.

[MOD][Concept] 720p video (May not work)

Hello there,
My Nexus S is arriving soon. As Nexus S doesn't have 720p video recording, I have an idea to turn our camcorder into 720p.
I tried this to my Wildfire before, and it really work, (480p for wildfire is just lag like hell)
But for Nexus S, I don't have the phone. You guys may try it out, it may not work.
Make a backup before you try it out.
1. Simply take something (e.g. pencil) and shoot it, remember the angle and position that you take the photo.
2. Go to photo gallery and check the file size (e.g. 1243kb).
3. Make a backup
4. Go to other phone's development zone (android phone with 720p and 5MP. e.g. desire s, galaxy s, wildfire s, etc) and download their rom.
5. By using a computer, open the ROM.zip with winrar, head to system/etc/ and extract media_profiles.xml.
6. Make a flashable zip together with the media_profiles.xml and flash it via recovery. [Copy and paste via root explorer may not work]
7. Reboot system and go to camera.
8. Take the things that you used just now and shoot it once again.
9. Go to gallery and check the file size. The file size will be different depending on the media_profile.xml from different ROM that you used. (e.g 2013kb)
10. Then go to camcorder and see whether you have 720p with high res setting.
11. If it doesnt work, try to flash it again.
If you still can't get 720p
1. Use root explorer, go to system/etc
2. Copy the media_profiles.xml into somewhere else that can reach when you turn on USB storage.
3. Copy it to computer and change the number of the resolution into 720p.
4. Turn it into zip and flash via recovery
5. Check the photo size and go to video see whether you have 720p.
Good luck guys.
Hope we can get 720p and I'm not responsible if anything goes wrong with your devices.
As I know, the problem to activate the 720p recording in NS is a little bit harder than change a value in a XML configuration file. Is something related to drivers and a camera harware restriction.
Anyway, we don't lose anything giving this a try.
Give it a try.. change the xml..

There is an hardware limitation. You can change the value, you will record a fake 720p o worse brake you camera. Are you sure this is secure?

Yes it is. The Nexus S is missing a chip within the phone to do 720p capabilities. This was because there wasn't enough room in the phone because of Super AMOLED + NFC or something of that sort.
http://www.gsmarena.com/nexus_s_in_italy_next_month_no_samoled_but_has_720p_video-news-2251.php The Italy version has 720p. There is also a thread about this when the phone first came out. They broke down the NS and the chip was missing.

@dario3040: I saw a picture of it. It's not present in I9020T. Only model is the Italy version of it (it could be in other parts of Europe too)
Edit: Supercurio: @dnaltews Is VIdeo Capture 480p choice due to WebM codec limitations on this SoC? software compressor Maybe?
Swetland: @supercurio clock rate limitation of the SoC. Galaxy uses an external image processing part as a work around. Not enough PCB space in N.S.

I said it does have the chip. the nexus a didn't have proper 720p a android developer at google had confirmed this. So no you read better because you aren't listening to me. If 720 p was such a big deal then maybe you should of gotten another phone.

The changes needed for 720p are more than just an xml file, it needs kernel changes/framework/camera/libcamera to name a few.

I'd say no as HTC removed the code for it in sense ICS and sense 4 jb, although sense 5 is a lot different that's why you don't see it in sense 3.6 or 4
I can't confirm that the code is gone but I don't know if it there
Possible I think on AOSP though if that gets up and running

AFAIK it wasnt possible on the One X since there wasnt any libs for that effect out for the Tegra 3 platform. With the One it should be more easy since it uses the same GPU as the Nexus 4 does, plus Qualcomm Chipset. I am no expert but in general, from my understanding, it should be alot easier to get AOSP and Nexus 4 features on the One than on the One X. Really looking forward to a possible CRT effect, loved it on my Nexus 4.

Crt "on" effect is made out of libsurfaceflinger.so, crt off is only made out of the 2 jars above...
A smali code is also requiered into the kernel , to make it fully working, it could be activated into it by default...
Crt in aosp are made and built from source... can't be added to jars from the ONE..
I already checked services.jar the lines missing can be added..

AOSP has it working just fine so maybe when it's a bit more stable i can use that as a dd, it's not the end of the world i was just curious, and damn HTC for making it difficult, no idea what they've gained from that. Or the BT stack not working with BT peripherals, can't see the logic in it.

Before the One hit the market there were plenty of people posting "no crt, not buying" which was why I felt the need to find a vid of it.
When I saw what they were crying about I quickly decided that we were well rid of them. Especially as the majority of them probably weren't old enough to have ever SEEN a CRT with that pronounced an effect.

This works better because it has all the lib files and everything for extra functionality. (I removed the link due to the powers that be, but google search HTC m9 camera port and you will find it.)
At the bottom of the comments someone provided a full patch for 4k video.
Does it have an HDR+ option?
Selinux needs to be permissive for some reason

If you are using lean kernel, there is an option available in lkconfig.
Otherwise, you would need to use the app SElinux Changer.
It was pulled from Google Play, but can be downloaded here on XDA:

Is it better than Camera FV-5?
there is any diference between zip file and apk files?

More features awaited!
Well, I've been using the HTC One M9 Camera App for about 4-5 days as my primary camera app and I'm quite happy. For instance, there are some awesome modes in it like Brokeh, Split Camera etc. But, Google Camera has better panorama. The HDR mode is needed as I compared the photos on my laptop... Google ones were better even when HDR+ mode wasn't even on! Having said that, HTC One M9 Camera is a beautiful addition to our phones as the Google Camera is still 2012 in my opinion!
Features awaited(in terms of importance):
1. HDR (most important)
2. Slow motion video
3. Faster focusing
Please hit the THANK YOU button if you think my review helped you. I will continue to post further info on this.
This is way better than the stock camera. The focus issue on the stock camera made me hate my camera, now with this I'm liking it. Thank you

I'm using my phone... And are you sure this has been available for 5.0.2? I know it's been available for 5.1.1 Lollipop for some time now...Because I'm pretty sure as of a month ago (that's around the last time I searched this topic) it wasn't working on 5.0.2 because people were getting Force Close errors on all the Camera 2.0 ports.. A couple of the devs even said 5.0.2 was impossible with this... but if you know of a recent 5.0.2 port that I don't know about, let me know.. It's not that I doubt you, I'd just like to see it for myself since I sunk a lot of time into getting this to work for our Lollipop version...Thanks!

The Z3v is different from the rest of the Xperia line, and I've tried the port that was given out on the cross device board and it really does no one any good when you can't even open the camera anymore.

telling a devloper to use the search button... you should know what your talking about before you post.
This is the only way to get camera 2.0 on the z3v. Or use the other ports and watch your camera not work anymore and force close.

Where can I find a list of improvements that will be had specifically to the z3V over the original camera software?
Also, can you please tell us what is different than the other downloadable installation file that's floating around here? They have the same timestamp and are the same size. I'm not doubting, just trying to understand.
Mr. Bradley, please, for the love of God, don't lock this thread down too.

There are no list of improvements specific to our device model, this is just the updated Sony camera app(s) ported from the Z5 to work on our devices. I wasn't aware there was another flashable camera port for the Z3v floating around here... Please link me to it. I assure you, you have nothing to risk by flashing this and that I am the original developer of this port... No one else by my knowledge should be circulating this file around for the Z3V or 5.0.2 in general. I'm making a flashable zip as we speak to revert back to the orginal camera should you not like the Camera 2.0's interface... I'm also working on an updated version of this port that will provide some camera improvements. When I'm done with both zips they will be posted in the OP along with some cleanup and screenshots. Thank you for your questions, it's great to ask questions... that's how we learn.. And its always good to know as much as possible before flashing anything to our phones. Should you have any more questions feel free to ask and I hope you enjoy the MOD.
Nope, not the same. When Mega DLs I end up with two of everything. Previous download zips were moved to my card and is the z5 2.0 at 10.5mb.
Will try this later and look for differences.

Would you mind linking me to this other zip you're referring to? Thank you
EDIT: Nevermind I can tell by the size of the file you must be referring to one of the other Camera 2.0 ports here on XDA. You can try flashing those at your own risk if you'd like, but I'd kindly like to warn you ahead of time, those do not work on Lollipop 5.0.2... The reason my port is larger in file size is because the framework ported from 5.1.1 as well as permission files to run Camera 2.0 are included. It is worth noting however, you can flash any other Camera 2.0 port AFTER flashing mine and they'll work since mine installs the correct framework and permissions that are necessary.
Zach,
Thanks for putting this together. I've installed it on rooted 5.02 and it's running well. Note that a couple boots were required after TWRP install and the user will get an overheat if trying to use the camera immediately but after the phone acclimates it is just fine.
I had downloaded the z5 zip not understanding that the z3V was the only one not on the list. I actually almost installed it until I read that it could brick the phone.
The UI seems a bit fiddly but I guess each has it's learning curve. I took random dim indoor shots, including some macros, before and after in the sensors native 4:3 aspect ratio at 20.7MP usingthe original and your ported 2.0, but using Camera FV-5. I didn't tripod the phone or run any real range, just point & shoot of 28 shots all the same objects from the same spot.
So far I have not noticed a significant difference and when the photos are zoomed in on they show the same muddled look from what appears to be the same overcorrective software (I'm sure Sony didn't change that). I've read that the z5 camera hardware is identical to the z3V.
I'll put her on a tripod this weekend and do some real testing.
The original camera zip will make flipping back and forth easier for comparison testing.
Thanks for making this happen!
Thank you so very much for your time and effort to get this working for our device
So how many of us have actually installed this ROM? Is it worth ditching the setup we have right now? I mean I don't really know how this could provide better performance if Sony hasn't updated any soft for our phones camera. I could understand manual modes might provide greater ability to change fine settings, but point and shoot quality and overall use ability is was I am concerned about.
First off, it's not a ROM, it's technically just a mod. Secondly, Sony supposedly did update the software, and because the camera hardware in our z3V phones are identical to those of the z5 which was released with this updated software, it will do the same thing and be perfectly installable without having to port it. -And it is, on nearly every single z model but ours because the z3V is a Verizon Sony step child.
The UI is MOSTLY what's new and improved, but lower light shots do seem to be rendered better by the software. The ISO limits haven't changed and I doubt that Sony did something to alter their interpolation software, but something does seem different.
Until I can easily switch back and forth without having to flash to an entire restore that's 12Gb (in other words, simply flash back to the original camera as a zip), I'm not going to bother with tripod testing. Once I can do that, I will take shots with a tripod in varying light using the old and new camera zips and examine the shots and exif data. It could simply be that in manual mode the software defaults to better settings. I'm guessing that it's the default values values in lower light situations that have been changed, if anything.
At first I didn't like the user interface just because I wasn't used to it. But now I find I'm actually using it more than I used the old one (I normally use FV-5). It is a one handed, portrait friendly UI.
I highly recommend this mod. Simply make a backup and install it. You can always revert back to the old one via your backup or you could wait for zachariahpope to release the original as an installable zip.
I found I minor bug. The front camera wants to stay on manual. If you switch to superior auto, the camera closes.

Strange. Mine doesn't crash when switching to superior auto with the front camera.
Edit: It does if I try to switch while using the front camera. If I switch to Superior Auto for the rear camera and then switch to front camera it is fine.
