[Q] Blocking Mode Killing Battery Life? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having problems with my Note 2 for a while now, in particular my battery would drain about 30% at night when I'm not using my handset, apart from it automatically checking emails occasionally. During the day, battery life is much as I'd expect. I get through 30%, but with reasonable usage.
I think I've pinned it down to the Blocking Mode. When I don't use it at night, battery usage is less than half of previous usage. One other person has confirmed a similar experience over a short period. I'm running Baseband N7100XXDLK7 (but this also happened in the previous ROM too). I'll repeat this for a few more nights, but I'd appreciate it if anyone else could try blocking mode and see if this is repeatable. (I had disable incoming calls, notifications and LED indicator on).
Oh, and any ideas how to cure it? (apart from not using Blocking Mode?)
Many thanks

R: [Q] Blocking Mode Killing Battery Life?
Did you check, using cpu spy, if your cpu is able to go in sleepmode while screen is off? If it doesn't, then maybe there is some app that make your note awake and working when it shouldn't...

Cheers. I'll give it a go to see if there's any more clues.

[Q] Battery Issues / Questions

I read through quite a few of the battery issue threads but would still appreciate specifc advice on the issue I am having with mine.
I already couple times did the stats wipe as per the tweak guide on OT site but do not seem to have any benefit from doing it.
I am encountering the following issues:
Charging
Charging is very finiky. If i am charging in operation or while turned of the tab will seem to stop charging at certain levels of charge between 70% and 95%. If it happens while charging turned off I need to disconnect and reconnect in order to coninue charging, sometimes a few times.
If it happens when in operation similar will happen but also when the charge is reported at 100% I tun off the tab only to find out that the charge level reported by the off battery icon is not 100%. On different occasions it displlayed anywhere from 80 to 95% (estimated). Dont remember ever seeing it at 100%.
Discharging
If I turn on flight mode overnight I will get almost no discharge all night 0%-1% which seems very cool but my normal use is really wireless thethering. I just started not even 10 minutes ago from 100% charge and already at down to 90%. Just playing a game or browsing or reading the forum using the XDA app can completely discharge the battery in less than 2-3 hours. All of this in spite of the fact that I am on Jupiter, UC and UV heavily. I also manualy been stopping running services like skype and yahoo messenger.
I am afraid this could be a a battery hardware issue but would appreciate a confirmation or a suggestion of what else I can try before restocking and going to the service center to get the battery replaced.
Maybe you could advise which system apps I can freeze with Titanium and still be able to maintain wireless tethering and phone functions. Maybe an advice on a task killer and what I can and can't kill to keep the mentioned functionality.
While writing this post I lost 8% charge!!!
Dont get any task killers they kill system process then the system has restart them which kill battery. Have you tried wiping batterystat.bin when below 10% and charging to 100% while powered off.

Or try backing up data and restocking and installing the WIPE version of
Jupiter or of kratos.

thanks mate, I always restock and do the wipe version. currently on Jupiter and will soon be moving over to Kratos. Reading good stuff about it.

The only way I would install a task killer would be if I could get someone to tell me which tasks to ignore so I wouldnt get this issue. No have not tried the below 10% wipe but will do so since you mentioned it. In the Kratos thread somebody mentioned to let it completely discharge and then without connecting to boot into CWM and let it further discharge. Aparently a system full discharge is not a full discharge and there is another couple hours juice left in the battery to keep the CWM going. Would this be a good idea?
Thanks to the helpers and to all you readers I think I found the issue. It seems to be a hardware problem but not with the Tab. The problem was with the charger.
I accidentally came across a car charger, bought it, used it to partially top up a couple times in the car and right away the Tab seemed a bit different. So I went back and bought a mains charger plugged it in last night and for the first time in quite a while it charged to 100% and it happened within expected time. Put it on charge at 1.30am and it was at 100% at 5.30am when I woke up.
Dont think it will effect the drain much but it is definitely giving me more juice to start with.
Oops!
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
After running Kratos for quite a while with my new chargers and recalibrating by the book I am getting the expected level of battery juice. The tab charges efficiently to100% every time.
Drain is still an issue for me though. If i set airplane mode overnight (8hours) it will loose 1% charge but 9%-10% without airplane mode. On standby and in use the drain is consistant and fast. Not even UC and agressive UV helps.
I did a lot of app freezing and it realy doesn't make a major difference. Normaly I have only 4 services running. Settings, Google Services, AnySoftKeyboard and Google Maps.
I don't think I had the same drain on Hermes even though i didnt UC, UV and had at least a dozen services running. Think my battery life was better while others were complaining about wifi reconnection issues. ASAP I will try going back to Hermes to either confirm the issue with Jupiter/Kratos or to just accept this as normal and shut up.

I finaly narrowed down the battery issue.
When on wi-fi i will get up to 3 days of battery life but only up to 16 hours on 3G.
It has been suggested to change the modem. I am curently on JPZ. My GT-P1000 was originaly purchased in Saudi and currently, until my next contract who knows where in the world, using it in Croatia.
A suggestion on the most battery efficient modem that works globaly would be appreciated.

FYI - Kratos Overcome ROM has(or had, there's a new one out today and it might fix this?) a bug with wifi where that if you leave the network and then reenter it without manually turning off then on the wifi, it will constantly reconnect(or something) and burn battery like mad.
For now I just flip the wifi off/on again when i connect to a new wifi since i didn't want to leave Overcome. Hopefully the new one fixes it.

and by leave/reenter network, i mean physically walking outside the network range until it disconnects, not disconnect/reconnect through the tab settings.
It may only happen moving from one network to another (i go from home wifi to work wifi to home wifi each day).
Mate thanks for the reply but think you misunderstood. I dont have an issue with wifi. My issue is with 3G/mobile network over SIM card. That one burns the battery.

So to understand what you are saying explicitly.
At home I connect to WIFI -- XXZ.. Its already a remembered network. I drive away from home and come to office here WIFI is YYZ (Already remembered network). So it automatically connects. THIS CAUSES the batt drain????
If yes, I am extremely happy. Coz I dont turn off WIFI it connects at home n office automatically. Please corroborate!
Al

I think that is normal standard consumption. 3G is known battery hog and you cannot compare its runtime vs. wifi. Is 3G on all the time, or maybe you attempted to use interval disconnectors (ie. battery saver apps) like JuiceDefender, Green Power, the likes?
Thanks jtdc!
I move around the world a lot and rarely set up wifi so most of the time I am full time on 3G. I dont use any power saving tools like you mentioned. Insted I use Titanium to freeze any apps that unnecessarily show up in running services.
I only noticed the differwnce with wifi due to an exteded visit with a relative who has wifi in his house. It wont be long and I will again be full time on 3G and would realy like to extend the battery life by minimum 4 hours. Are you aware if there is a known difference in power consumption between different modems or if any of the tools you mentioned can deliver this kind of savings purely by managing the 3G operation?
Sent off the Blue Marble using GT-P1000 on Overcome 7, v4 via XDA App
if any difference of modems that would be minimal to negligible. what always comes as the factor is the strength of signal and of course the tab which always scans for it whenever you're on the move. what you experience is typical, and in best case good because 16 hours on 3G always on? your battery and tab must have been setup really well.
if you can bear with interval disconnector apps like i mentioned, it would increase your runtime. for instance you can have the app connect every 15 minutes to 3G then be online for at least a minute to have all your internet dependent apps sync (email, messages, news, etc) and have traffic threshold detection in case in a minute some transfer still ongoing, then maybe 2 minutes is long enough. then for the next 15 mins 3G is off, then it will repeat the cycle. in that manner there's quite a lot of power to be saved and will definitely extend your runtime.
if really no other choice, i suppose you need to buy an external battery solution, the likes of energizer xpal, so you won't have to worry about battery life.
Great, thanks, that solution is acceptable for apps that require data services. Can you recomend an app to use for setting it up.
I expect it would prevent me from using inbound calls via Skype but how would using such an app impact incoming sms service and voce calls? Would they come through and would voice call quality be impacted.
Sent off the Blue Marble using GT-P1000 on Overcome 7 v4 via XDA App
"Green Power" in android market does the job and its free, that takes care of data connections (wifi or 3G) and will not tinker with the GSM radio, therefore sms and voice calls are untouched. The other app "Juice Defender" you can customize even to turn off the GSM radio, even downlclock the cpu, etc. which will result more savings but is a paid app.
Let us know how that helped to increase your runtime

[Q] battery issues - 3 charges most days

Hi everyone,
I brought this wonderful phone (or atleast i thought wonderful) couple of weeks ago ( delivered on release date)
Now i expected the battery to be good as its 2300 mah but it the phone doesnt seem to last no way near as long as other claim i had an s3 before this htc one, 9 times outta 10 i only had to charge it once a day and never activated power saver mode,
On the htc one i constantly have power saver turn on and it just doesnt seem to be doing anything , i havnt changed my usage of my phone, if anything ive used it less,
For example the s3 lasted my full 8 hour shift with nothing running expcept the tunein radio app, the htc one only seems to last 4-5 hours with everything closed except the tune in radio app. Ive not changed networks so low signal shouldnt be causing the drain as there isnt a difference in signal levels,
So is there anything else i can do to stop bettery draining. Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc all turned off, screen on auto brightness ,
Sent from my htc one with just 26% battery left and i havnt even rrached 4 hours of my shift yet, left house at 9:45 with 100%
You probably have an app preventing the phone from sleeping. There are loads of tutorials on how to check for partial wake locks to fix this.

Definitely sounds like you have an app which is preventing the phone from sleeping and you should be getting a pretty easy 1 day out the battery at the very least in moderate use.

How have you TuneIn setup.
As general when you press pause rather than stop, itt continues to record that station and is always active. Iif you go into the app settings and turn off 'autostop recording' which should be defaulted to 8 hours - turn this to never and try again to see if it improves. I've seen TuneIn eat battery life on other devices where ths happens (people thinkits stopped when its just paused and recording away in the background...
That's possible ^^^^, however if he was just to hit exit on the app it should stop the services. That and really want to be sure, swype it away in the multitasking section.
Can try Betterbatterystats in the play store as a lot of people rave about that.
Also make sure Google Now is disabled. It sucks battery life like no other. Awesome tool, however to much drain on the battery.

Guaranteed that you have horrible wakelock issues. Rogue apps, bad settings, and anything in between could be the cause.
I can go to bed with the phone fully charged and, 8 hours later, wake it up to see it's still at 100% (mobile data, GPS, WiFi left active.)
Once I'm bored of constantly picking it up and playing with it (i.e. get back to standard usage patterns) I get the feeling it will likely run to 3 or more days between charges. Won't be this month though

Well there are various reasons for this..Maybe an app that drains much battery not leaving cpu to sleep. You can download better battery stats and see the wakelocks and the cpu states that your cpu runs on.. You may also need a battery calibration. It will not increase the battery capacity of course but it will eliminate the faulty battery stats bin that tells the system the battery percentage. You may have for example 25% battery left and your device may show 2% or even close.
I assume that you do not have wifi always on, screen on for hours or using mobile data..The consumption of battery is huge.

Download Better Battery Stats, leave it for a day and then upload a screenshot of your wakelocks. My battery is easily lasting the day (ended at 11pm at 76% yesterday)
Same-ish problem.
Hey i'm having a similar problem,
I bought the HTC One (silver, 32Gb) A couple of days ago and the battery isn't even lasting a day with what I'd say as Medium/light usage. I do leave Mobile data on so i can get Skype/Facebook/line calls ect instantly, but i assumed that's normal.
I just left my phone alone for an hour with the screen off and it lost 4%, could this be a battery defect?
Are you telling me to get over a days usage, i have to leave mobile data turned off and only turn it on when i want to use Skype ect?
I saw a post above that one guys gets 3 days of usage with Mobile date, Wifi, etc all turned on. Is this the norm, or does he have a super hero battery?
I see the general consensus is to download "Better Battery Stats" and send pics of wakelocks, but Is there comparable app for free that will do the trick, as i don't have money currently on my English account.
Thanks to all those taking time out of their own lives to help others.

[Q] Wi-Fi on during sleep

Hi,
I changed the setting to turn off Wi-Fi when the tablet is in sleep mode. However, when I check my battery usage, it indicates that Wi-Fi is on almost 100% of the time.
Can I do anything to fix this?
Try better battery stats available here at XDA. Although it's designed to help you find out what's using your battery, the info the app produces will show you what programs are running the most. Odds are one of those uses wifi and that's what's keeping it on during sleep. Just remember that you'll need to be on battery and not plugged in or docked to gather the app usage info.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent Purple Tapatalk 2
Definitely an app keeping wi-fi awake. I have mine set to never turn off during sleep and I only lose 3-4% overnight. Wakelock Detector is another app that can identify which apps are keeping wi-fi active.
Thanks, I'll try to see if these apps can diagnose the problem.

Battery Drain?

When I got the phone my battery was pretty phenomenal (comparatively speaking). But it seems since I took the update that Sprint pushed out a few weeks ago, the battery can't make it more than a few hours with light/moderate use. Its really horrid to be honest. Hoping the eventual 4.2.2 OTA will fix this. But in the meantime I wanted to know if anyone else was having this issue and possibly help identify the source of the problem. (By the way I am not rooted)

Well, in fairness for the last week or so I've been charging the phone and leaving it in my room. The screenshot was after like a day and a half in which a hardly used it and had WiFi on.

With your usage, that would give you a day. I'm happy with 11 hours.
But with no internet connection and hardly any use. It concerns me because usually it would drop 5 maybe 10%. It was great on sleep.

OK, now that I think about it, you're right. I remember getting more than 2 days on standby with absolutely no use (on wifi).
A day with that kind of usage is really not that good. It's weird because your stats don't show anything odd. I'd like to see some moderate to heavy usage stats though. The kind you say gives you 5 hours. That would help more.
Here you go. About 50% gone in about an hour of use (on WiFi) mostly on YouTube/Twitter or music with regular use of ATK.

I'm having a serious battery drain issue with my Sprint One also, though I don't remember exactly when it started - it might very well have been that OTA update.
My battery drains when the phone is asleep. The phone will be dead in just over 24 hours from 100%, with less than one hour of screen usage. The integrated "usage" monitor shows that WiFi consumes this power , whether or not WiFi is in use. I have a paid task manager app that can track stats over time, and according to it, the processor appears to be running at ~15% constantly when the screen is off. I've tried disabling WiFi and having the phone sleep on just the cell network, to no avail. I first thought that perhaps the poor service at my house was causing it. However, I watched the battery drain at exactly the same rate when in an area with perfect coverage.
Here's the weird part - I tried airplane mode'ing my phone. Airplane mode doesn't seem to stop it. In fact, airplane mode seemed to accelerate the drain! I find it simply unacceptable that my phone will die like this with almost no usage.
I feel that the problem is not a rogue third-party app I have installed. I've used the "disable" option on Facebook, Twitter, and I've removed several other suspected apps. It makes no difference. I even suspected my task manager app; I tried removing it and looking at the integrated one, and there was no difference.

Check to make sure never auto turn on Wi-Fi is checked in Wi-Fi advanced settings. I was going to suggest poor reception since that kills my battery, but you mentioned trying airplane mode.
With screen off and nothing running, it's not surprising that Wi-Fi is the main battery drain. But it is too fast in my opinion too.

[Q] Is my battery broken?

Hey I have just bought HTC One 2 days ago. Compared to my old Sensation XE battery life completly sucks. I usually use phone without battery saver, on auto brightness and with Wi-Fi/3g turned on only on demand. Today 8 hours after unplugging phone from the charger I only have 26%. Screen was turned on for 2 hours and 45 minutes only and Wi-Fi worked for 3 hours and 46 mins. I might also say that I did not charge my One before usage to 100% as HTC advised. Was that very crucial? Do you think that phone might be broken or I should just give him time to settle baterry better.
That's sounds like what I get. I turn off mobile data when using WiFi and vice versa. I always use power saver unless I'm 3D gaming. Which is only on the weekends.
I've had mine for 3 months now.
I've seen people get 7:00 screen time on stock unrooted.
I think my battery's broken too. I can barely reach 3 hours of screen time. With 2 hours I get like 11 maybe 12 hours of on time. Something's wrong with our phones...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I get pretty horrible drain too. I charged it to nearly full around 7:30 last night. I took about 2 minutes of video, sent one text, and checked my email 3 times. After that I went to sleep and the phone sat idle. At 6:30 this morning, I'm down to 9%.

Wow, that's real bad.. When my phone is off during night maybe 7% is gone. Then again I'm rooted and use greenify aswell as battery doctor if that has any affect.
On screen time seems like my battery drains pretty fast too though. After 2 hours of music and surfing and watching videos I guess atleast 40% would be gone.
My battery life became horrible, too. My phones loses 4% per unused hour. No App seems to be responsible for that drain. Flightmode or powersaving mode ain't making a difference. I hope we'll find a solution for our drain.

@Racingmatt your power management services is on for quite a bit. do you have alarms.? i would bet that you either that maps location enabled or something of the sort. cause you also have NLPcollector on for around 40 minutes which is a bit much. also i would turn off GPS if your not actively using it.
@Rachorid how are you setting up your wifi? is it set to always be on? or set to turn off when screen off? you have alot of wifi wake. might be due to that. i know when i'm at home my wifi actively pings all devices connected which will force wake up my phone. yea its a bit annoying but i live with it. otherwise i just keep my phone plugged in.
if you both can get some SS of alarms i can give you a better idea. and when you SS the alarms make sure to click on the ones with the most wake lock so i can see the secondary screen that shows what the actual wakelock command is happening.

Here are the latest stats. As you can see many Google wakes.. removing Maps/Now/GMail/turning of Location (a few days ago) had no impact on my drain. The 2nd app on Partial Wakelocks was used actively.
I also disabled Wifi for about 2 hours.. no impact, too. Flightmode also had no impact (a few days ago).

The reason I didnt give you a alarm ss is because I didn't have any alarms when I went to the alarms section. I also had all locations services including GPS enabled but I just now disabled GPS but left network location enabled I'll give you a screenshot later so you can see the differences
I know exactly how you feel that's what happened to me,u was expecting so much from the battery and it turned out to be the worst..give ya some advice...3g drains the **** out of the battery ,so always jeep it off and turn it on only when you wanna use it...that way the battery will be acceptable... Also flashing a custom Rom would help...o recommend arhd

I had awesome battery life a month ago with Wifi always on, auto. brightness and every app on hourly sync. (I have my phone since 7th of march) Sometimes I didn't lost a percent over night (8 hours) and I just don't know what it could be because I didn't install another app and no app seems to be responsible for that stanby drain. My on-screen battery life is still good. It also doesn't matter which ROM or kernel I'm using.
Here is my latest stats after 12 hours with 5 minutes of GPS use (turned off when not using)and network location on all the time with 3g/4g on all the time(turns off after a period of inactivity) . I can't give you a alarm stat because I'm not rooted.
Lithium-Ion batteries used in today's smartphones need atleast 10 cycles to show optimum power
so hold on until 2 weeks then you will get the full performance
i get 2 days of battery on my HTC One (since i dont have internet on my Simcard)
its 2G connection and auto Brightness and switched bloatwares off
i use Android Revolution HD 12.2
