I run into this EVERYTIME I switch phones.. even between SONY phones, they make this so difficult.
Where am I supposed to store my MP3 files so the phone's sound picker can see these files for me to select as ring tones? Why must this be so painful? my Xperia Acro V was able to just see ALL sound files and lets me pick anything. The Z... no
please help me
Thank you
You can set them as ringtones from the Walkman player or then you can create a folder called 'ringtones' anywhere on the internal memory or SD card and copy them there. Reboot and the phone detects them.
Install ES file explorer. When you want to set your ringtone, the Z will ask what program to use. Select ES and no problem. Been using this method since my first android phone LOL

Hey everyone, I just bought a Galaxy S yesterday and I'm wondering if it's possible to use custom ringtones for notifications/calls?
Thanks in advance
Play the tune you want to use as a tone using stock player, push menu button > Set as > select from the list which action you wish to use the song for.

And if yo want your own notifications for ex. sms/email, make a folder in memory and call it "notifications" and put you mp3 tones in that folder they will appear in the settings
actually, the folder stucture on your internal memory is like this:
system/media/audio/ringtones
/alarms
/notifications
This way the sounds can be selected in the ringtones menu and don't show up in the media player.

To get acsess to "system" you must be rooted? because in not rooted phone you cant find this folders, or do I just make the folders in internal memory?
Edit: The phone must be rooted for this. I tried to make this folders in internal memory and the mp3.s dissapeard when u delete this tones in media player. Remember that every one dont have their phones rooted

You don't need access to the system folder on the internal memory, you just add these folders to your internal mass memory (the 6GB partition aka sdcard).
Iirc your phone does not have to be rooted.
Hello everyone, I just tried to add a .mp3 file to system/media/audio/ringtones but it didn't show up as a ringtone option under settings.
I also deleted a few .ogg from that same file but they still show up in settings>sounds>ringtones.
Can anyone confirm that his trick really works with Galaxy S?

That solved the problem doop! Thanks a lot! So the trick works but one has to rescan media.
I used Ringdroid myself, it allows you to even select a specific portion of a track to use in notifications\ringtones etc... Pretty good for a free app.
The only real and best way to use custom ringtones/alarms/notifications is to move them to internal memory in /system/media/* to have them always available, and its also faster.
and you need root for that.
If you store them on sdcard, when phone rings it will be slower doing it, and if the phone just booted up; sdcard is not ready yet, you wont hear startup sound. If you have sdcard mounted, all the sounds alarms notifications saved in sdcard WONT PLAY until you unmount the sdcard.
Yes Android is very LAME.
Are there any other app where I can choose ringtones in settings>sound>phone ringtone ? like the walkman app? and what kind of permissions do I have to set? I think the skin of the walkman app is outdated and incompatible with ICS themes. Thanks in advance
I can change the ringtones in PowerAmp. Try it. It's the Best music player so far...

PlayerPro is better. You can use it to change ringtone.
PlayerPro is better than PowerAMP because of its UI and frequent updates. Many people in Android Market says that too.

I was actually thinking of apps that would allow me to do to choose in settings>sound>phone ringtones (see attachment)
I like it because its a lot easier when I want songs in my SD as my ringtone but also when I want to use them as my alarm ringtone.
Thanks to everyone who replied.
RingDroid, simple to use.
Why go to the trouble of using a application to accomplish something Android can do by itself?
- Create a "Alarms", "Notifications" and "Ringtones" folder on your sdcard.
*Use Root Browser or Root Explorer or whatever filemanager you prefer.
- Copy your Alarm/Notification/Ringtone MP3 or OGG into the respective folder.
Once that's done the files you copied in there will show up in the list of Alarm/Notification/Ringtone sounds.
In case Android doesn't pick it up right away simply reboot.
No need to use an extra software to set a custom Alarm / Notification / Ringtone sound.
@B.Jay I wanted another app to do this because I want the option to choose from my 500+ songs in my SD card. I also don't want to add additional data in my internal memory than what's really necessary. But I guess I'm just stuck with the walkman app Thanks anyways.
With all due respect ...

I wrote SDCARD - in no way, shape or form I wrote something about cluttering up the internal memory.
Anyway, if you don't have a few Megabyte left on your SDCARD to create the folders and place your custom "sounds" there then it's your choice (seems I'm somewhat spoiled by the 32GB SD I have in my SGS S2).
Sorry I didn't notice about the SD card but then again that would still occupy space on my measly 8GB SD . Anyways, thanks again

tqvm, didn't know abt that.
I need some help with regard to the Sony Walkman app. It won't recognize a song (910 files copied to my phone, 909 songs available) and off course it's a big hassle to manually find the song.. Anyone know 1) a way to find the missing song, 2) why it's missing (read something about weird symbols in id-tags or something). Thanks in advance!

Where did u copied the songs? SD or main memory? If its SD card just take it out and insert again. If its a main memory make
sure the folder is visibile by non root file commander. You can also try to clear cache and data of walkman app in settings.

Maybe the song is in some other format that doesn't come under songs in the walkman app..perhaps it's recognising it as a ringtone or stuff..btw it's just one song lol...a number I could live with..

Yeah, i know... It just bugs me I guess.. You 'fixed' it I guess, by searching for the format, I found that the folder contained 909 songs, but iTunes contains 910 songs (used Synctunes). Will try to find the missing song in iTunes now. Thanks!

Spoke too soon: Windows explorer tells me there are 910 songs in the folder, but when I select 'sort by type', I have 903 mp3's and 6 mp4a's. So one's missing, but when I scroll through the folder when I sort it by name, I don't see anything extraordinary.. I know this is not really a Xperia Z problem, but I guess I'll just share it right here, in the hope someone knows a little more
Hi
Is there a way to set up the stock Album app so it only display Photos and Videos saved to the DCIM folder in the sdcard0? I looked everywhere in the device to see if there there was a setting to that end and did not see anything
I ask because the app shows every image/video format in the SD and is has become a little annoying especially in my case it end up showing album art for music in Walkman and movies I have save that I don't have interest in seeing in the Album...
Anybody with info will be greatly appreciated

No you can't,use another application from playstore.
Sent from my C6603 using xda premium
Use nomedia app from market.
Select any folder you dont want to seen in album/walkman etc. applications.
Nomedia will generate .nomedia file in every folder you select.
Clear data of Media Storage from Settings>Apps>All
That will erase all file index. Media storage will generate new file index in afew minutes, but this time will exclude your folders.
All generic album/player applications uses this index. So any of them will see your files.
Also you may rename any folder with single . dot.
For example. .mypics .myfiles
These folders will exclude from file index.
Dont forget, if you rename basic folders like .DCIM. system will generate new DCIM folder.

Hi,
Is there no my file app on the Z1? I can not find it.
Other questions - how do you make the Walkman app look for music in your sd card?

Mine came installed with file commander, but you can easily download 3rd party ones such as ES file explore from pay store.
As for the Walkman app, mine scanned my SD card fine, there doesn't appear to be a manual scan mode, so I'd suggest u un mount your sd card in store and re mount it see if that helps.

media scan
Or try rescan media from the play store free app (works for me)

Wait a bit, turn it off and on again and it will scan the content of your internal and external sd card automatically. But it may take some time.
As for file explorers, there are hundreds of them on the market
Thanks. I normally use astro for file handling, I was Just wondering if there wasn't any default. I tried rescan and turn off and on phone with no luck. If I pick a mp3 via astro it opens and play in Walkman, but walking only shows the preinstalled songs..

OK, someone already mentioned that file commander comes with the rom.
Just give the media scanner some time. It is a process that takes some time. Leave your phone with screen off for a bit and it should find it.
Also, make sure there is no .nomedia file where you have the media stored. I also keep mine in a folder called music on my external sd card.
Nothing seems to work with make the files show up in the play (Walkman) So I will try format the card and see if that helps. Btw I didn't have the file commander installed default.

Do you have a network locked handset, as mine is unlocked and unbranded so that could be why you don't have the app.
As for your music not being recognised by the Walkman app sounds pretty strange... before formatting the sd card you should try clearing the cache from the Walkman app, as to me it sounds like a software glitch.

hopefully you've sorted this now!
also if you just want your music files in the walkman app, just click on settings (top right) and then open settings and disable 'music unlimited' under service settings. Now the walkman app will only show your downloaded music and none of their streaming stuff
