I've had the Xperia Z, and i'm not even remotely close to getting the battery life some people on here are getting.
I'm unrooted and followed the advice on here for better battery life, but still cannot get 4 hours of on screen time.
Anyways, over the weekend, i've noticed Google Maps suddenly taking up huge amounts of battery.
I've barely been using Maps or indeed barely using any app that uses location based services.
Even over night, my battery would drain 15% and Google Maps was clearly the culprit when looking at apps using the battery.
It was even stopping stamina mode from kicking in.
I disabled GPS.
that didn't fix my problem.
I tried to Force Stop Google Maps.
that didn't fix my problem.
For example, i could charge my battery to 100% to reset my battery stats, then do nothing else but immediately watch half an hour of a film, and incredibly Google Maps would magically be the app thats drained the battery the most, like double that of the screen or triple that of media server!
So last night, i reset my phone back to factory settings, reinstalled all my apps, but i haven't applied the Google Maps update.
so far so good. so far, it is behaving itself.
has anyone else had this problem?
I don't know whether i should update Maps or not.
its weird, for the first couple of weeks, it wasn't an issue, so i don't know why it suddenly became a problem, but it was massively draining my battery, even when i had done everything to disable it!
under the reviews in google play, if i filter reviews for just reviews by users with XZ, i can only see one other person complaining of the same problem.
i couldn't find anyone else posting about this issue when i googled it.
So anyone else have this problem, or know why it is/was happening?

It isn't the version of maps you are using that causes the issue. It is 'location settings'.
If you go into location settings in Maps, you will see that you can turn on and off things such as Location reporting, Report from this device, Enable location history etc.
Some of these are required to run Google Now to its full potential, however they cause quite a high level of partial wakelocks.
It is up to you whether you have them switched on (with some battery drain), or switched off (with no/little battery drain).
I also noticed a larger than normal battery drain since a couple of days. I can't remember if there was a gmaps update right before the drainage increase.
Just for the sake of repetition silly. This has nothing to do with the Maps version.
FYI - The last Maps update was on 12th March. Point proven therefore.

BUT like i said, i had turned all of these off, and MAPS was STILL draining my battery, despite location based services turned off, Maps forced stopped and not even using any location based app.
That is what i am querying. Why was this happening?

What I have noticed before once or twice however is that my location settings have changed without me doing it manually. This has happened to me twice when I have (un)installed Now.

i'm hoping its just a random quirk.
On friday, i noticed maps was using quite a bit of battery.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday however, it just went crazy.
I could lose 15% battery when my phone was asleep all due to Maps.
well, I reset my phone to factory settings 12 hours ago, and so far the problem has not repeated itself.
i've got GPS on, location based services on, and so far Maps isn't doing anything it shouldn't be doing.
I will definitely keep an eye on it and update this thread as and when.
I've had this phone 3 weeks, so i don't know why it suddenly became a problem on friday. The only thing i changed on friday was i installed new app Google Keep which almost certainly cannot be the culprit that i can see

So since the latest Google Play Services update, I have been suffering some serious battery drain issues. There are various mentions all around the internet and most point to the issue being 4.2.1, which, we aren't running.
I spent some time over the last few days trying to figure out what the issue is and have some observations. But, for some background, last few days I have been getting no more than 10 hours battery with no more than an hour or two screen time.
Google Play Services is listed as the biggest battery drainer with 49%, so I started looking into that.
First off, I noticed in battery stats that if Wifi is on, the device doesn't deep sleep, even though wifi is set to never on when sleeping, the wifi never turns off and the phone never deep sleeps.
First thing to try was turning off wifi, so, I turned off wifi, straight away, phone deep sleeps again.
Next I began messing with Google related things, first of all I "uninstall updates" on GPlayS, tested with Wifi on, great, no more battery drain, phone sleeps, BUT, phone keeps bugging me with notifications to update.
Next was to update, battery drain returns. So, disable Google Now in its own settings, battery drain remains when on Wifi, however, if I kill "Google Search" after disabling Google Now, the battery drain stops.

I shut it off it was draining my battery!
I had the same problem.

After that there will be no problems with battery drain.

I did a factory reset and have the problem.
So the amount of battery drain has lowered significantly, but it is still there. I attached a screenshot from before the change and a screenshot from after.

Update Google play Service to version 5.x
I'm not sure what's considered high android system but mine is at 29% and looks like it's taking a toll on my battery. When I check the battery usage it's the highest thing listed. How can I lower this or fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated! I love this phone!
same problem here ... android system is at 24% with 59 minutes of CPU usage while screen was about 20% with more than 2 hours of screen on time !?! Why system is killing the cpu so much ? ... TouchWiz !!! *SMH*
Give it a week or so to even out.
This could be any app that is pulling your location. Most pull through your location through google play services, part of the android system. Not defending touchwiz usage but most likely the fault lies elsewhere.

I dont think so my location its off and still takes 29%, maybe a kernel issue. I heard they did the update we just got cause battery draining issues. maybe not fixed 100%
I get the same thing and I made sure to turn off notifications and apps that "push" and set em all to manual. I use the same apps and settings on my S5, and LG G3 and would be able to get around 6 hour screen time and total of 17-20 hours per charge. AND on those devices, the screen is usually the highest % and the android system is not even near that %
Right now I'm getting almost about the same as my S5 battery life, maybe a bit shorter...
Same problem here, about 42% on a normal usage. I did not have this problem before, on stock Rom but since I switched to cynanogenmod, my phone can't make it through the day.
What's more, I'd like to know if any of you know an xposed module or an app which can automatically turn switches on/off when starting/closing an app. Like turning GPS on when starting Google Maps and turning it back off when closing the app, for instance.

I found this was related to location services and / or google now.
I found these worked for me:
1. Turning GPS location to GPS only (i.e. not using wifi). I believe this stops passive location tracking, which in turns stops the other services always running
2. Turning off location tracking / history. As above, no detailed location, no other fancy things running all the time.
3. Turning off Google Now.
I listed the above in the order I would do it. Using just item one, you still get most of Google Now's functionality.
End of the day, what I found was there was a lot of "smart" stuff going on in the background around your location, and this is what caused most of the CPU time. If you look at your wake locks, you will see it drop off dramatically once you do the above steps.
Some people have reported turning location services back on after a while didn't result in a spike in CPU time.
This isn't a Note 4 thing, more a Android / Google Now thing in my opinion,.

thanks for the advice and suggestions, but my s4 and s5 did not have the "android system" so high in usage. i've tried the turning off gps, then back on, and then restart phone thingy, but same results. i just hope sammy would address this issue as it seem pretty widespread.

Just to clarify,Ii suggest turning location to GPS only. And leaving it off.
Turn off location reporting and history also. Then see what results you get and go from there

I found I can have GPS on without any issues, as long as either Google Now or location tracking was off.

I am having the same issue in tandem with weak battery signal. Do I wait for Lollipop or do I just sell my N4 and get an S6?
Anyone using battery monitoring apps like BBS or GSam, can you share some of your stats here? I'm trying to figure out whether the seemingly massive amount of wakelocks I'm having is normal or not. The biggest problems seem to be coming from the kernel itself. BBS shows a lot of kernel wakelock time, and GSam consistently lists the kernel as the highest drain in its app sucker screen. Also, the Phone app seems to be waking the device a lot since upgrading to .5.51, which wasn't a problem on .3.374.
I've attached some screenshots that illustrate the problem. I'm already using ForceDoze and Greenify, which have been enabled via ADB, and I've restricted background activity and data for the vast majority of my apps. I'm really hoping there's something I can do about this given that it's impossible to use another kernel (LB and none available for this phone anyway). I've software repaired/clean flashed 3 times.
My battery drain is actually not bad at under 4%/hr (combined screen on/off) and about 1%/hour with the screen off overnight. Today I've logged over 4.5 hours SOT in a period of 17 hours and am sitting pretty at 36%. That's better than any phone I've ever used. But I worry that all the wakelocks are using my phone's CPU, raising its temperature, and might contribute to faster battery degradation.
Also, this is with bluetooth off and my Pebble not paired, but battery drain becomes substantially worse with that setup. My idle drain triples with my Pebble connected. I'm trying to troubleshoot one issue at a time and want to nail these wakelocks before moving onto the bluetooth issues.
If your battery stats looked like mine and especially if you figured out how to fix it, please share!
Given that Sony ended .5.51 deployment prematurely and is currently rolling out .8.49, I think you should update to .8.49 (or wait until your region gets the update if you don't have it yet) then recheck if your problem still persists.
Pouring time and resources into a version that Sony is no longer pushing isn't that great of an investment, especially since it's possible that it was fixed in .8.49.

Everything except the phone app using more battery was the same on .374. And I fixed that after force stopping the phone app and rebooting. I've been trying to troubleshoot this for weeks but just upgraded to .5.51 a couple of days ago. I will flash it when it comes out for Customized UK, but I don't think .5.51 is the root of the problem.
(Oh cool, Xperifirm actually shows .8.49 available for Customized UK now. Time for some flashing!)
Edit: I'm seeing the same degree of wakelocks so far on .8.49.
Update: The battery drain from "phone" is actually Android System. There's a bug in Oreo where sometimes Android System is showing as Phone/RCS in the battery stats. Doesn't explain why Android System is using so much battery though.

So I managed to get a lot of my battery drain figured out, but a few things are still bothering me.
1) Google Play Services and Android System and/or Phone (see my last post) are using the Significant Motion Sensor to wake my device constantly.
2) Sony's smart charger (com.sonymobile.smartcharger) is waking my device. I'm assuming this has something to do with Battery Care, which I find to be a useful feature. But why does it need to continue sending alarms to wake up our phones when not plugged in?
I've attached 2 screenshots from Better Battery Stats showing the first issue (Sensors/Play Services and Phone) and 1 showing the second (Alarms/Smart Charger). Note the "wakeup=true" and long times recorded for Significant Motion. This held true when I had my phone sitting face-down on a table for 6+ hours to do battery testing earlier.
Anyone else who uses battery monitoring apps: have you noticed any similar issues?

I'm with you on RCSService being main culpirt for me. No I don't think it's a bug, it actually does use lots of battery. I listen to 3+ hours of bluetooth music a day and when I saw that RCSService was using more power than my bluetooth, then I thought it was time to experiment. So I uninstalled Carrier Service and RCSService and suddenly my battery life jumped by 20%. There was something in the November update to these services that made them go nuts. Several people have noticed a jump in battery usage, but most people, myself included, thought it was down to the new firmware. Uninstalling these 'features' has made no difference to SMS for me, other than I don't get a read confirmation.
I don't know about smart charger, sorry.
Pretty sure the proximity sensor is always on and that must use some power, but I don't know what that would be called in BBS.

Thanks! I should clarify that when I say it's a bug, I believe something is using a lot of battery, but I don't know that it's necessarily Phone/RCS, because it shows up randomly as either that or just Android System. I think it might be something within Android System but being labeled as Phone or RCS. (Edit: Or the other way around; it could be 100% RCS and sometimes shows up as Android System because the phone is part of that umbrella.) I could be wrong but based my judgment on the links I posted above.
That being said, I disabled Carrier Services on your recommendation in the other thread because my carrier doesn't support VoLTE, VoWiFi, or RCS, I've never seen a "delivered" message, and I don't even use the Google Messages app anyway (I use Texra for SMS and keep Messages disabled). So like you, I don't need these services. And I do think there's been an improvement. Might be time to go through the rest of what you recommended via ADB. The only thing that concerns me about doing that is that I'll have to factory reset if I ever switch carriers and want those services, but I guess that's a small price to pay and an unlikely scenario anyway.
The smart charger thing is just weird. It shouldn't need to constantly check whether I'm charging since it kicks in when you plug in. Yesterday I disabled battery care during the day and re-enabled it at night to charge, and I had the best battery life since I've owned the phone: 4.5 hours of SOT over 18 hours off the charger with 30% remaining. I may have to look at idle drain with battery care disabled. I like the idea of battery care, but if it's draining my battery then it just defeats the purpose.
Regarding sensors, BBS has its own category for proximity sensor; this is a separate sensor for significant motion. Somehow Google Play Services and either Phone/RCS or Android System are using that particular sensor all the time. And not just listening to it, but causing lots of wakeups and doing so while the device is sitting on a table all night. I can only deduce that it's somehow seeing motion when there isn't any.

Do you have 'On Body Detection' enabled in smart lock? That would force the phone to affirm if it's moving/stationary regularly and quite often.

I never enabled that from the start, but just checked in case Google did something, and it's still off.
I also checked my app permissions, and the only ones with access to body sensors are Google Play Services and Tasker. None of my active Tasker profiles require the significant motion sensor. One of them does use the orientation sensor to turn the speakerphone on when it's face-up during a call, but I tried disabling that profile and the stats didn't change.
Maybe I have a messed-up accelerometer...do you know of a way to test that? (Edit: Found it in the Support app - my accelerometer, gyroscope, and proximity sensor are fine)
I think I might head to the Sony Mobile forums with the smart charger issue for that matter. It may be a bug that affects all phones with Qnovo features, or maybe they could at least give me an explanation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you just "reinstall" those services via the same adb commands? Where you typed uninstall, just replace with install?
Maybe, but I don't know where I would be installing them from...? Since I don't have a backup of the package. I uninstalled a bunch of stuff via adb before and it didn't return with a dirty reflash. I had to flash userdata. So that's all I'm going by.
I'm not sure of the actual technical mechanics, but I believe uninstalling system apps doesn't actually remove the package from the system image, so you can reinstall them at any time.
I think it's like taking down a sign on a store, the actual store is still there, just all references to it are no longer there, so to the OS it's not listed - "uninstalled".

I gave up. I still have a ton of wakelocks. GSAM shows a bunch of them even when my phone is supposedly dozing. My battery life is OK, not nearly as great as I hoped I'd have with this phone, but it gets me through the day so I've just been living with it. I have noticed better battery on the latest firmware (July patch) than June. I also got rid of the RCS stuff, which helped a bit. And finally I traced a lot of my drain to an app I was using called "hide running in background notification" which the last few firmwares can do natively.

Edit: I was sadly mistaken about better battery on the July patch. The battery is only better if I'm not on wifi. I posted in the wifi drain thread about it just now.

Since the purchase of my phone XZ1 Compact (G8441), I've been experiencing barely acceptable battery life. This is especially frustrating since I bought this phone having heard that it can last easily 2-3 days, but this is not the case for me (discharging about 4%h on average or 2.5%h with screen off on either wifi or mobile data, with various configurations outside/home/office, i.e. in practice never usable more than a day).
According to *#*#SERVICE#*#*, the battery life is still good (2704 mAh). The issue I am experiencing is most likely due to an unknown software and/or hardware failure leading to lots of wakelocks that prevent the phone from "sleeping"/"dozing" correctly.
I know that MANY users worldwide are experiencing this and Sony never gave an answer to this, according to e.g. the following threads:

In my case the items "NlpWakeLock" and "RILJ_ACK_WL" activate both up to thousands of times every hour. No relevant information could be found about this in the web lookups I've done, and I am not sure this is related to the issue I'm facing. I joined a log of today's better battery stats with a pathetic 1h20 of SOT and 65% discharge, a huge count of wakelocks except when I was listening to music, and an apparent faster discharge with the idle phone than when actually used.
The phone is running the latest downloadable Sony firmware 47.2.A.10.107.
Of course, factory reset was tried with no amelioration and I tried to contact directly Sony which have basically no willingness to help or investigate.
Anyone would have a clue about this?

Do you use Google Now (google assistant) - NlpWakeLock
If not, disable it and see what happens.
This little phone I have for battery life and for banking/authenticator/etc. Not for work. So I have disabled most things I do not need (adb uninstall) - so the battery is quite good on standby.

Looking at the bbs stats. The first thing I noticed is that your wifi is on all the time. Try turning it to only when awake and disable the wifi scanning in locatin settings.
RIL wakelocks are on because you have poor signal, it's the number of handhakes your phone does with the local cell tower and if you have bad signal, it gets higher.
Some providers offer home 4g boosters for your home or 'calls over wifi', either of these would reduce your battery usage.
My phone has been flawless (2-3 days on battery when I don't play games) but suddenly it started behaving like described in the original post.
It has 1 day life now and I haven't found the reason for this change. I have removed all recently installed apps, removed all unnecessary apps (including Facebook app), disabled running in background for some (like Messenger), there was no firmware update at that time. Still something is eating up the battery. SmartPanel tool shows that 58% of battery is Unaccounted (next is display and Google Services). I have not done the factory reset yet because I need fully configured phone right now.
After updating to 9.1.0.252 I noticed faster battery drain. Did any of you experience the same behavior? I'm thinking to go back to 9.0.1.

It might look like new but mine is already 2 years in use.

I noticed faster battery drain on my ltr-09 as well. All is fine now. I noticed when i first upgraded location was turning on alot almost like it was learning when to turn on. Then it levelled out. Example opening google now at first it always turned on my gps now it doesnt. When i was on 9.01 i left my phone on battery saving for gps. You cant on 9.1 and i have seen alot of apps that used to be good with battery saving location now going for full with gps. Big bttery drain. Those were the differences i found. What I believe solved my battery drain was actually my battery getting all screwed up. I had this happen when i would switch roms and my battery stats would get all messed up. I solved it before and solved it this time with my p10 by running the thing right dead. Then pluging it in overnight with it turned off (no fast charging) Then I did it again the next night drained to dead , plug in charge with off ( no supercharging) and my battery life is better again. Hope this helps. EDIT After a few days of testing i still felt the battery was better but battery life still wasnt right. I did a factory installed minimal apps. Battery life was good until play store updated carrier services. I uninstalled updates to carrier services, disabled auto update. Then i actually disabled carrier services completely. Battery seems good now. From what i read carrier services is for next gen texting. Saw online others were having issues with this update.

Wrong, batteries get older with time and charging cycles. Updates have nothing to do with it and if you notice a drain right after one - it has nothing to do with the condition of the battery, it's the update's fault.
updates are huawei's way to convince you to buy a new phone
first they borked the camera, now they are messing with battery
I managed to improve battery life a little bit by disabling apps running in background and disabling unnecessary location permissions for several apps like @bigshowjh said. Like @bigshowjh said I found apps resetting their permission or settings after update. Still the battery life is not like it was before updating with the same usage behavior.

I have ran a couple of days with very good battery life. 11.5 hrs with 62 percent left. Seems like it used to be with Oreo. Overview of all I did was as follows. Clear cache partition, factory reset . Uninstalled Google Chrome (used Firefox instead) set carrier service to factory in apps three dots advanced. Disabled automatic update of carrier services in play store, then in settings apps disabled carrier services completely. Went through and disabled network access to every app that doesn't need it. I don't use Facebook or Facebook Messenger apps. I use them through my browser. Oddly chome on pie is a battery killer as well. I'm very satisfied with proformance of my P10 again.
My GPS is pretty much always off (unless I really need it) and the battery level still goes down by 9% during the night. It used to be 3-4%.
I cannot find carrier service anywhere.
In my case I can't see power hungry apps in the stats, standby process uses the most energy.

Settings, apps, apps again, select three dots in upper right, select show system processes. You will find it there it's a little hidden lol.
Still no carrier services for Play Store.
