[GUIDE] How to install Ubuntu to VM and More - Galaxy Ace S5830i General

This is a guide of easy installing Ubuntu on a second drive (not partitioning) or a pen drive which you can carry around your system.
First of all we need VmWare : VMware Workstation 9
Ubuntu CD: Ubuntu Download
First we download VmWare and Ubuntu CD (I used 12.10)…
After successful setup of VmWare create a new VM.
Using New VM Wizard we choose Custom (Advanced).
Hardware Compability --> Vmware 9.0
We select the Ubuntu CD to the Installer Disc Image File.

Select the number of cores you will spend for this VM
Select the Memory you will spend for this VM
Select the Network type you desire
Select I/O Controller Type
When in Select Disk screen Select Use a physical disk (for advanced users).
In Vista/7/8 Admin Rights needed for this operation
Select the Second Drive (separate disk or Usb stick) and select Use Entire Disk
ATTENTION: YOU WILL LOOSE ALL THE INFORMATION IN THIS PARTITION SO BE CAREFUL WHEN SELECTING. AND DON’T BLAME ME FOR LOOSING YOUR PRECIOUS DATA.
Just hit next
Select Customize Hardware. Remove Floppy and close. Hit Finish
When VM restarts it will repartition your drive removing old one and creating Ubuntu partitions
Wait for Ubuntu Setup to copy system Files
You can enter your system with the username and password you have selected while creating VM.
If no problem occurs you can now browse your favorite forum.
And if you install your Ubuntu to a Pen Drive, you can use it on any computer by selecting your pen drive as Primary Boot Drive from BIOS.

Multiboot Selection from Windows
There is a magic tool called EasyBCD which we can take control of the Windows Boot menu easily.
We can easily download a non commercial one from its site: EasyBCD Download
After setup, open the program. Select Add New Entry from left menu. And on the right panel select Linux/BSD.
Select:
Type: GRUB 2
Name: Whatever you want
Drive: Automatically locate and load
Click Add Entry. And all done now we have multi boot menu which can load windows or ubuntu on choice.
If you install Ubuntu on a Pen Drive or a removable drive, dont forget to plugin before starting your computer.

Reserved for something but cant remember now....

This would be better suited in another, more general forum, considering it's not related to Android devices.
I also don't think such an easy thing needs yet another guide (plenty of tutorials all over the Internet), but that's just my opinion. Good effort nevertheless.

Virus on my moms laptop.

Alright. She has some weird program on there called "System Tools 2011" and I don't know how it got there. Right when you boot up, a minute into it, it pops up the app and a wallpapers and blocks you from A LOT of things. You can't back up files to a USB, can't access Control Panel, etc... when I did get into the Control Panel, it won't allow me to uninstall the app because it doesn't show up and there is no way to uninstall it. Is there anything I can do to get rid of it? Any ideas? Let me know please. Thanks.

Download RKill and run it!!! search Google about RKill. And stop turning it off and on...that will damage your computer to the point of no return
I've removed that virus from two computers already but read above!!!
Nice to see you around little one
Or you can google the name and find the registry keys for said virus and remove them. DOne that at work manny times and saves the time of backup and format
I have had to literally roll back my computer to an earlier date to get rid of the annoying pop ups and remove viruses like that. And yes, I got them from torrents.
As an IT Tech for many years those Viruses are a pain to deal with. I use a paid AV Boot CD called Avast BART or you can try using TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit) Bootable CD AV's work best as they are seperate from the OS. Try TRK just google it and burn it to a disk. Best of luck!
Malwarebytes/Spybot/NOD32 cocktail also does a pretty decent job at getting rid of that crap. Just remember to turn off System Restore or your viruses will be back upon booting your computer.
MalwareBytes anti-malware is great but some viruses are so good that they will block any known anti-virus program from executing.
What are the Symptoms of System Tool 2011 Infection?
It will modify Windows Registry and add the following entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\System Tool 2011
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “5648541024″

The threat will drop the following malicious files:
%AppData%\[random]\
%AppData%\5648541024
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.bat
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.cfg
%AppData%\5648541024\5648541024.exe
%UserProfile%\Desktop\System Tool 2011.lnk
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\System Tool 2011.lnk
How to Remove System Tool 2011 Manually
1. Restart your computer in SafeMode
- Press F8 on keyboard as soon as you turn on the computer
- Select SafeMode to start the computer loading only minimal resources
2. Delete Windows registry entries the malware created. It is important to BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST.
- On Windows Start Menu, Click Start > Run
- Type in the field, regedit
- Find registry entries mentioned above and delete if necessary
3. Files related to System Tool 2011 must be deleted:

Integrate your Box.Net account into Windows Explorer

This was done on Windows XP. If you have Windows 7, there are further instructions at the bottom of this post.
I saw a post somewhere that gave me a tip on the web address to use, but I forgot where the post was, so unfortunately I can't give them credit. The process they spelled out didn't work, but I did get it working later.
This will integrate your Box.net account into Windows Explorer for easier access. Note that this does not mean that all the files saved there are also saved on your computer, it only gives explorer access to them.

Type your E-Mail and your Password
If you are using Windows 7, Thanks to str8upx for supplying the following instructions for you:
Windows Explorer Integration [Windows 7 Instructions]
[Hopefully this Should apply to any OS just find "add network location"]
Open Computer
Right Click - Add Network Location
Choose a Custom Network Location - Next
Enter: \\box.net\dav
User Name Enter: your box email address
Password Enter: your box password
Thats it. You now have Read/Write Access to all your Files & Folders in windows explorer
cool
maybe ill check this out when i get home
Windows Explorer
For read and write integration do this

Open Computer
Right Click - Add Network Location
Choose a Custom Network Location - Next
Enter: \\box.net\dav

i cant get this to work . is it down or what?
edit nm. idk what was up i rebooted my system now it works. weird.
I had trouble mapping a drive too, it just kept rejecting my username and password. I found that logging out of the box.net webpage and logging back in, it asked me to complete a captcher on the first login after changing my password. After doing that I was able to map the drive with no problems.
i have the same problem here in mapping network drive....
network path not found!
I keep getting an error message saying "The network path \\box.net\dav could not be found." Any suggestions?
you miss the Great WWW mate
Well BlaznAzyn, I think you miss the WWW in front of the link. so the right link is
\\ www . box . net \ dav

[Q] Any help with installing Ubuntu to an external HDD?

Hi all.
So I posted this a few days ago in the Ubuntu Forums, but go no reply, and am completely stuck as to what to do. XDA was the next place I thought of to go to for help, simply because the community has always been really helpful and supportive. Any insight or ideas whatsoever would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Liam.
First off, I apologise if this is in the wrong section of the forums, or if I'm otherwise breaking any rules. Please correct me if I am
So, I'll try to keep this as brief as I can.
I've been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 to my portable external HDD (USB-powered), and have run in to a few issues. The drive is ~931GB, (marketed as 1TB), and I've separated it into five partitions: a 750GB storage partition & a 60GB backup partition, a 110GB Ubuntu partition, a 10GB swap partition, and there's also about 1.5GB of unused, unformatted space.
I went about the installation from a LiveCD, and I seemingly successfully installed Ubuntu to the external HDD. Under the 'Something Else' option during the installation, I made sure to select my external HDD as the location to install GRUB (/dev/sdb), selected my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sdb3) as the location to install Ubuntu itself, and selected my swap partition as well (/dev/sdb4).
After, I tried booting off the external HDD, and was taken to the GRUB rescue menu:
error: unknown filesystem.
grub rescue > _
So, I booted back into my LiveCD and searched around for a bit, and on the way noticed that GRUB had been installed to /dev/sdb3 (my Ubuntu partition), under the folder /boot/grub. From what I understand, this is because GRUB automatically installs where ever Ubuntu does? Maybe not.
Anyway, after going through the Fixing a Broken System and Troubleshooting guides on the Ubuntu website (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Troubleshooting), I am still stuck with the same problem, and I'm clueless as to how to fix it.
I wouldn't call myself a Linux/Ubuntu newbie―I've been using it on and off for a few years now―but apart from knowing the basic way around a command line, my knowledge is very limited.
The only thing I can possibly think of is that the partitions need to be at the 'front' of the drive, if that even makes any sense? I've also attached a screenshot from GParted to illustrate the way my HDD is set out.

Thanks for your time, and sorry for the essay
Liam.
It's been a while since I had the time to play with Linux, but have you followed the instructions on the first page you posted and reinstalled GRUB to sdb (with no partition number)?
If you are still struggling then it may be worth your time heading over to the Mint forums http://forums.linuxmint.com/ and having a search there - they also tend to be more friendly and helpful than the Ubuntu guys.
Boot Live CD and try re-installing GRUB.
Re-installing is the easiest solution.

[How-To] Install Windows 8 Drivers to Establish ADB with NookColor

Hello mods, surely haven't done one of these before but there seems to be a big hole in our knowledgebase here and I thought I'd take a stab at filling it. If I somehow overlooked another solution for this, feel free to take this down and also smack me because I turned the web upside down trying to find the answer before putting it together.
All that being said....I've now done this on two Windows 8 machines so I feel confident that it works. All of the following was done on a fresh install of the Android SDK by installing Android Studio with all default options. Get Android Studio here. You'll need to install Java first if you haven't already, you can grab Java SE Development Kit 7u75 here.
1) The first step is to disable driver signature enforcement on Windows 8, which is the cause of all this devilry that makes it seemingly impossible to install the drivers and get ADB working with the NookColor. Follow the instructions on this link: Disabling Signed Driver Enforcement on Windows 8
2) Download and extract the attached adb_usb.zip file. Take the adb_usb.ini file inside and drop it in your.android directory. If my Windows username is cabbieBot, then I find it here: C:\Users\cabbieBot\.android

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Alternatively, you can just make this file yourself by opening up notepad, typing 0x2080 into it, clicking save, change dropdown from .txt to All Files, and save it as adb_usb.ini
3) Open Device Manager and plug in your NC. You will see NookColor under "Other Devices" with a yellow exclamation mark.
4) Download/extract the attached NookColorADBInstall.zip file.
5) Open Device Manager in Windows 8 You will see "NookColor" under "Other Devices" with the exclamation mark. Right-click on it and click "Update Driver". From here on out its all about just going through the right process of menus and dialogs.
6) Click whats in the red box: "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
7) Just leave it on "Show All Devices" and click Next.
8) IMPORTANT STEP! Click "Have Disk"
9) Click "Browse"
10) Navigate to where you extracted the NookColorADBInstall zip and you'll select the "usbdrivers" folder inside.
11) Without restarting Windows with the driver signature check we'd hit a dead-end here but we good. Click "Next".
12) Tell the dialog to eff off and click "Yes"
13) Click "Install this driver software anyway".
14) DING DING DING! If you have your NC hooked in, you should now see it prompting you to accept the computer's RSA certificate which means your computer and nook are gloriously flirting, so lets check it out to be sure.
15) Navigate to where ADB lives, which on a default installation will be at C:\Users\cabbieBot\AppData\Local\Android\sdk\platform-tools. Hold SHIFT and RIGHT-CLICK in the folder to select "Open Command Window Here"
type:
adb kill-server
then....
adb start-server
then...
adb devices
When you see your device's serial number pop up, you are certifiably done. I decided I wanted to learn to build CM from source and the trusty old NookColor is a handy device to play on. If you are worried about the driver signature check being disabled, just reboot your computer because it doesn't survive a reboot. Hope this is useful to someone else even though dear old Encore is downright ancient at this point.

Flashtool Issue W10

Hello guys ,Its possible to flash roms for the tablet with a computer using windows 10 because evertime that i tried to do it i got only a 14% at least
Obviously its a driver issue but there is any update or fix to this thanks :good:
Win 10 is not the best OS to use in order to flash ROMs at the moment..
Maybe try to use Virtual Machine with Win7 installed..

Better than with Windows:
Yes try with the UEFI method
There is no more risk to brick your X98 than with any other methods if you follow the instructions.
You do it from the same computer/tablet so no no cable and No other computers involved :cyclops:
Just DON'T forget at the end of the process/flashing to shutdown the tablet by pressing the Power button for 15 seconds
How Flash your BIOS via the UEFI shell:
You connect a USB hub to your tablet and connect a Keyboard to the hub and a USB key with the BIOS file + FPT.efi command and the fparts.txt on the USB Drive.
Important: To be recognized by the UEFI SHELL BIOS the USB must be formatted with GPT AND in Fat32, the more EZ is to use the RUFUS utility to format the USB drive. So don't forget to format the USB drive before copying the files
You power up the tablet and press "ESC" key to enter in the BIOS.
In the BIOS you go to the Boot selection and choose "UEFI Shell"
You will see a screen like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You press any key to have the SHELL prompt (There is not Startup.nsh on tablet it's a generic message in UEFI bios)
You are now in the UEFI shell, it's a little bit like the old DOS shell.
We now need to know where is the USB drive so you will type "map -r" (Without the quotes)
It will list all the devices available:
You try to find your USB drive, usually you will see "Removable Hardrive" in the name somewhere.
To be sure you have the good device you type at the prompt:
"ls FS1:" (Without the quotes) and press "enter"
It will list the files so if you see the BIOS file and the fpt.efi file you are at the right place if not try another device FS1 FS2 etc...
Once you are in the right device it's EZ:
First we will do a back-up of the BIOS, so Type:
"fpt.efi -D MyOriginalBios.bin" (Without the quotes) and press "enter"
It will do a backup of your bios named "MyOriginalBios.bin" saved on the USB drive.
Now we will Flash the BIOS so type:
"fpt.efi -f MyNewBios.bin" (Without the quotes) and replace MyNewBios with the name of the bios file) and press "enter"
The process will begin you wait few minutes till it end and you should receive a message that the process was successful.
IMPORTANT: At this point you shutdown the tablet by pressing the Power button for 15 seconds
That's it ! Enjoy ! :laugh:
N.B.: If you want to remove the Dual Boot menu
Link for Flash Programming Tool: https://mega.nz/#!o4YADKZJ!Q1q3J8wSC9npX1ofrGE3iAwYEMAodREv1v-PhrJIXKI
For the BIOS you can use any BIOS from 1.03 to 2.05
