[Q] Can I wifi tether from stock rom & kernel? - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Simple as that, we're far away ahead in time (March 2013). Can I finally wifi tether from X8 stock rom and kernel to another phone? Barnacle did not work.
Thanks!

I put much effort into trying to find a solution to this, but there is none. The wifi tether apps, if supported by your ROM, can only work in ad hoc mode, meaning it can only be found by devices that support scanning and connecting to the ad hoc devices. These are typically laptops, and I think just a dozen mobile models actually do support this (and most of them are newer models).
The rest of the group only support searching for devices in infrastructure mode, like your home router. So until there is a way to convert the wifi tether mode to infrastructure instead of ad hoc, or perhaps make other mobile phones search for ad hoc devices, there won't be a wifi tether phone to phone. This may sound simple enough but perhaps there are some technical limitations to the issue which cannot be easily addressed. I'm not a developer so I cannot say.
Barnacle would allow a laptop to connect to your mobile phone's connection, so at the very least it's something that can be useful (it actually was for me a couple of times).
Phone to phone tethering is, as far as I know, not possible at the moment. If someone has information that confirms otherwise, then I stand reprimanded.

Thanks for your answer! It's a pity. But you say it is not possible to do phone to phone tethering only in stock ROM or in every other ROM?
Is there a ROM/kernel for X8 capable of phone to phone tethering?

It wasn't possible for me to unlock my bootloader, so I didn't investigate this any further. I can only tell you with certainty that stock kernel definitely doesn't support phone to phone tethering regardless of the ROM. However, given the limited information available about the issue, I think it is safe to assume Xperia X8 simply isn't capable of such a tether. Only ad hoc mode is possible. Some ROMs have it preinstalled, with some of the others you would have to download an app to allow it, but it's ad hoc mode still.
Don't waste hours on this like I did. Instead take your girlfriend or your friends out for a snack. Trust me, you'll have a much better time.
Cheers

Haha, exactly how I feel. From time to time I spend endless hours trying to solve android issues. That's sad.

Can you help a noob get an N1 to connect to ad hoc

I'm completely new to this and cannot find anything anywhere which gives me the confidence to root my brand new N1.
I need the N1 to connect to an ad hoc network. For a couple of reasons, I cannot use a router, it has to be ad-hoc. In fact, I can't believe that Google have disabled ad-hoc facility, if I had known I wouldn't have bought it! It makes no sense!
Anyway, I have installed the android sdk and drivers, no problem, my pc recognises the phone ok.
I don't know what to do next. There seems to be several options, but none specific to my phone.
One was to use Superboot, but there isn't one specific to my build number which is EPF21B, the firmware version is 2.1-update 1.
Another option is to follow the cyanogen instructions, but will this work on my phone?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? A link to good, easy to understand instructions and the necessary downloads?
Like I said, a router is not possible - this is what everyone recommends on the other forums I have posted on, but it won't work.
Thanks for taking the time, kewl.....
Can't be done, as far as i'm aware
I've got to say that I am staggered that Google has actually BLOCKED this facility, it makes no sense to me.
I have been waiting for this phone to become available for months, and now it is here I find that gooogle have deliberately crippled it, it's virtually useless to me!
Luckily, I have a 7 day cooling off period and I am going to return the phone and go back to my slow, clumsy and buggy Nokia, but at least it works.
Thanks guys!

don't you have a pc with Windows 7? you could try a software called virtual rooter or connectify, to use your pc as a access point to your phone. only ti use at home or work and only if you're looking to a way to give internet access to your phone. that's what I'm doing when i at home where i don't have wifi access. using a virtual machine running a windows 7 OS with a external wifi drive plug in to it (because my real pc runs vista). that did the trick for me
AHA im not alone!! I have the exact same UK version of the Nexus one as you. Ive also had the same problems.. its not htat you cant do it its just the phone is only a week old and none of the modders have modded the new version yet. Paul the guy from modaco is making me a epf21b fastboot i think they just have to change a few things for all the usual root goodies to become available to us UK n1ers
basically ill be sending him a copy of my epf21b today then he can make a fastboot for it then we can do all the goodies...
ill update this thread when i get some progress

No, you can't connect to ADHOC networks on the Nexus. Even with root i'm pretty sure it can't be done.
I was able to connect to my gf iPhone mywi internet tethering and use her connection. My n1 couldn't get a high-speed connection so I turn on her iPhone ad-hoc network and was able to connect
I have a rooted cm phone with the wifi tether app and the barnacle apparently as well. Hope that helps

[Q] usb 3g stick - is it poissible

I'm using tnt lite 3.1.4, also had vegan, but none could do anything with my 3g sticks. Following different forums, I see most devices can (at least some specific sticks). Has anyone managed to set up a 3G conection? Is there a how to I could follow? What chipset the stick had?
Thanks,
T.
I tried a sprint usb aircard.. no go..
The only way I have been able to get a 3G connection is to wirelessly tether to my DroidX work phone...
1) Install Z4root on the droid and run it to root the phone
2) Install wifi tether on the droid and set up a wep key and ssid
3) Turn on the wifi tether
4) The table sees this wifi "router" or connection, I set the wep key on that connection, the two units negotiate an IP, and zap, it has 3G through the droid
Not sure if this is helpful, but that is what I had to do in my own situation.
if it's in the kernel, it should seriously work, but someone has to build it. there's absolutely no reason for this not to work if someone builds it -- it has conceptually worked in linux for years.

I can build the kernel but I believe we need to add some stuff in initrc for the usb to connect to serial (like ttyUSB). Once I get another Gtab, I'll look into this.

exactly man, thanks for stepping up! this will be ultimately useful on many different devices with usb host features, and shouldn't be ridiculously difficult to get going, and gain some real cred with the tablet community, especially now as we're the first with this new tegra2 platform, with over 20-30 new devices coming soon. i'm unsure of how many are wifi-only, but the ability to merely jack in with a 3g/4g usb modem would be ultimately useful to many, and will save a ton of money for folks.

Thanks for that. I also use teether from my NexusOne, but I have to give it up as I got to move to BlackBerry - so I need a different solution... (what a step backwards :-(

The stick is probably seen in the kernel. The other parts, Networkmanager, dialier, ppp are not on the tab. They would have to be recompiled for the arm processor and I'm not sure what other work is needed.
Thanks Clemsyn. Using your latest kernel with Vegan B5.1. I bought a Novatel USB727 (Verizon) stick off ebay (built in Linux support) just to try this out. Would gladly test if needed.
I would also be happy to test with ATT and Verizon 3G USB modems...
Update:
Built a kernel with 3g USB support, used my friend's Verizon Mifi, plugged it in the Gtab and it turns on, Dmesg shows it is detected as Novatel wireless and shows it's serial info. That's about it, can't browse and use it. Any ideas?
I'll try my usb modem using the ubuntu load. It should have the other networking parts to dial and connect.
In the ubuntu load, networkmanager is not supported yet so usb modems are still on hold.
Yes please, we need this. I have a sprint card from work and would love to ditch the laptop when travelling. Clemsyn, I could send you a copy of sprint smart view 3g manager if you think it would help.

I am able to use 3G easily using MyWi app from Cydia on my iPhone. This Gtablet works great on 3G! And since I always have my phone on me, I always have a 3G network on my Gtablet! iPhones basically suck, but this is probably the only good thing I've been able to use it for! Same here. I've been using Wireless Tether on my rooted Droid X with an unlimited 3G data plan for several weeks and it is pretty sweet. And like you said, since I have my phone with me all the time anyway, this seemed like an obvious solution.
I would be interested in the progress of this usb effort since my carrier now offers 4G modems.
Does anyone have any idea if the gtablet will tether to the blackberry

[Request] Wifi router app for WP7 on HD2

That's for USB tethering, the OP and others in this thread are asking for WIFI tethering.
Bump. Need this badly... miss this feature that was readily available on my HD2...
PLEASE!!!
Giving this another bump, because I don't feel like dishing out more money to pay for a wifi plan with verizon when I can just tether with my phone. I would greatly appreciate this app back. =]
We should all start a bounty for all the things missing in WM7 on our HD2. I know They'll get it done (They have lives lol) but if there's money involved everyone will be motivated to work harder. I will start: 30USD from me if they can can get the following:
Custom Background
WiFi Tether
Copy/Paste (When it's released of course)
And anything else anyone wants to add. The bounty would be split evenly with who ever fills our needs
Wifi Teathering + Cut and Paste
I'll match that $30. I am about to set up an android dual boot situation just so I can get wifi teathering. I'd rather not if I don't have to.
Okay sotheres 60 sofar. Anyone willing to make a bounty thread for this and place a list with the people willing to donate, how much and a llink to their profiles.we really need these thinhs done
I want to start learning the code this summer so I can start developing apps that are needed such as this. I need the same functionality from my hd2 wp7 and can't find it anywhere either. Does anyone know what language WP7 is wrote in?

may not be a great solution, but has anyone tried the USB teathering method, then setting up an adhoc wifi network on the computer and sharing the dial up connection created in usb teathering?

But then you would need your laptop, your phone, AND your iPad/Galaxy/whatever out and that sort of defeats the purpose of wanting the wifi router built in to your phone.
I'll add my $30 to the bounty. I'm back in 6.5 on my HD2 because I use my wifi router quite a bit.

[Q] 3g modem on nook

Hello, I wonder if its possible to put in a 3g modem and use mobile broadband on the nook ?
Please excuse me for bad my bad English
Hardware modification is a lot of work. In most cases it's not even possible.
You are better off tethering to your phone or a hotspot if wifi isn't available...
In my opinion.

Where do you propose to insert the USB 3G device? Maybe once Bluetooth is working there will be a device to add 3g via Bluetooth. But there is not, as far as I know, 3G hardware available on the NC board... yet.

I'll make it simpler than the others...
Sorry, no.
Sadly the nook doesn't really have the capacity to add 3G hardware. Some tablets do have full sized USB ports that can physically connect to a USB 3G modem, but there is no built in driver support on those tablets either. Your only real option currently is wifi tether to a 3G phone.
Just in case any of these replies are missing information you need:
1. No, you can't add 3g to the Nook, in fact this is why i love it as a tablet - no extra data plan to pay for
2. BUT you can easily use the nook's wifi to connect to a portable hotspot
3. You could if you wanted buy a portable hotspot (e.g. Mifi, or overdrive), but these come with expensive data plans
4. You can use your regular cellphone. This requires rooting on an android device, and I do not know if this is possible on other platforms. Anyway, I reccommend "wireless tether" as the app to use simply because it can be set up to only communicate with MAC addresses that it approves (it's great being in an airport and seeing all the internet leaches being bounced off your phone's hotspot).
5. If you are super lucky, your phone will operate as an 'infrastructure network', and you can stop reading right now! ;-) However, more than likely, your phone will operate as an "adhoc" network, not an "infrastructure" network. This requires some tweaking of your nook on 2.1 ROMS (there's several threads on this), but is built into 2.2 (which is a major reason to move to Froyo).
6. The ad-hoc fix is a bit buggy, and whatever B&N changed in 1.1 makes this much worse. Again there's several threads describing this. In 1.01 the solution as to use an app to shut down and restart the wifi as the screen shut down or tuned off. BUT THIS DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM IN 1.1 AND IF ANYTHING MAKES IT MORE ANNOYING.
7. Basically there is some issue in 1.1 where when the nook wakes, the wifi is on but it may not reconnect to a network until you tell it to. This happens occasionally for the stock wifi, but happens continuously with the ad-hoc fix. The best workaround i have found is to have an app called "wifi buddy" in my dock - then when the machine wakes up if it can't see the network, i just launch wifi buddy and it connects immediately.
Hope that helps

I am using PDAnet on the iPhone. It's free and also offers the option to broadcast a WiFi hotspot. Other iPhones and my laptop see the hotspot but the Nook does not. Has anyone tried that yet?
Found the answer!
Ad-hoc fix for tethering
I found a great guide to use PDAnet (free version) for tethering the NC with my iPhone 3Gs. Hooray for this awesome forum!
If you could somehow get the SoC from the Droid X in there... it might be remotely possible. But the time and effort required would make this a purely "did it to say I did" type of hack.

Or, while waiting a year for that to happen, buy a NC that will do 90% of what that one will do now for half that price.

[Q] Extending Wifi

First of all I'd like to apologize if this question has been answered.
I did do some searching around but didn't quite trust my finds since they we're on different phones/forums/etc.
My question is:
Is there any possible way to use my phone as a Wifi Extender or something similar?
I am trying to find a way to use my phone as a temporary "mimic router" for use on a different device.
My problem is the device I want to connect only accepts WEP, but I don't want to mess with my current router settings just for 1 or 2 devices.
Can my T-Mo Moto X be used as an extender.

Why not just use wireless tether? I think that should be sufficient. also I'm sure you know but making your phone tether or an access point kills the battery. You should just bite the bullet.. upgrade those wifi settings!! lol

I see. hmmmm.... well a quick google search just showed me some potential solutions for you. maybe give those a read and maybe you'll have your answer
p.s. some android phone can USB tether a wireless network they're connected too when a SIM card is removed or if you place a non working SIM card in.
Hope you get those devices connected!
