Something lurking on power on - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I first power up the device I can see the the dialogue window apps gve you when one is asking for permissions as it installs. It is then covered up by the nook 'desktop'
is there any way I can identify / force this process to the front so I can see what it is ? its 2.0.6 rooted with cwm.
thanks

I'm not sure what it is, but if you flashed the location services zip, it could be that dialog box asking for permission to use location services. But my experience is that only tries once and, if not acted on, does not come up again.

I know adblock plus is for Firefox, but be careful if it is asking for permission to write to /system.

Missing Android Market for Rooted Nook Color

I rooted my nook color and it works perfect, but i noticed when i unzipped the gapps file using clockwork nothing loaded. I was wondering if there is a way to get the android market without having to root all over again?. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
Same Problem!
Gods I HATE that my first post is a ... " ME TOO! " but what can you do?
I just got the NC yesterday, and of course rooted it right away with CM7 using huskermania's videos. Every worked fine EXCEPT no google apps! Removed the hacks ( thought I did it wrong ) did it again....no luck!
Are the current zip files bad? ( Ive tried both gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip and gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip )
any suggections ?
Tom
I've got the same issue, followed eyeballers instructions and used gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip.
Besides the missing market icon, everything seems to work fine.
EDIT: Found a fix for the issue on my nook; Went to https[://]market[.]android[.]com, tried to install something. I was prompted to accept the license agreement and set up my Google account with market.
Then I was asked which Google apps to install (youtube, google search, gmail, etc.), ticked what I wanted and confirmed.
Now I have the market icon available, also some more icons in the menu. As the WiFi was pretty unstable (Restaurant during lunch break) not all of the apps were downloaded, but so far it seems to work.
Thank you for the quick response. I tried going to the market and install, but when it ask where to download app the drop down menu does not give me the option of my nook color. Did i miss a step somewhere?

I rooted my nook color as well, using the same instructions. I don't have the Android Market either. Did the instructions above work? I've tried going to the android market place and set up an account, but Im getting a msg that there are no android accounts associated with my account...please help!

Updated Nook App (v 2.7) Doesn't Run under CM7

I just updated my NOOK app and it does not run. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the same result. Anyone else gotten the updated nook app that came out today running under CM7?
EDIT: Never mind. I cleared Data and then it was able to run. . . It does require a complete reload of all of your books due to a new architecture. . . so bear that in mind. . .
Hopefully this addresses the general crappy performance the old nook app had under cm7. I swear every other app I use works flawlessly. The old nook app constantly forced closes, is very insensitive to touches, and just plain old sucks. Eventually when you got it to load a book it is pretty stable but will still lose your spot every so often.
It drove me to set up dual boot stock/cm7. I am booting back to CM7 now to test the new version out!

agreed, not really impressed with the nook app, it does work though (newest update). irritates the hell out of me when it loses my place, i've found that the bookmark feature seems to work if I can remember to use it lol.
The only reason I use the Nook app is to show off to my little niece about the page-flip feature, that's all.
I read .epub using either Cool Reader or Aldiko while using Adobe Reader for .pdf.
How did you install the the 2.7 update? While the nook app shows up in the Market, there is no option to install or update. When I go to the web based Market interface, it claims that the nook app is not compatible with my CM7 Nook Color. I've tried the usual fixes like editing the build.prop file for screen density (160/161) and also to make the device/manufacturer appear to be HTC. No luck. I found a 2.6 apk that works fine, but have yet to find a 2.7 apk outside the Market. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Uninstall the market update and you can search it and it will have a download button.
I wish the nook app supported the "read to me" books that I bought and now can't use unless I put stock back on my nook. I'd like to also be able to read them on my phone or another tablet.

I am running into the same issue with Phiremod'd 6.3 and the B&N android app.
However in my case, once uninstalled (original was corrupt and would not work), returning to the Android Marketplace and selecting the app does not bring up a download button. Gives me all the info about the application, but no app download or uninstall.
Any thoughts as to why this is happening? If it were windows, I'd say there was a registry setting left that was making the system think the app was still installed...

I have a quick question: is it possible to lock the old market down so it doesn't auto-upgrade. Every now and then, out of the blue, I fire up the market only to find that the app has updated. I can then stop the Market and uninstall updates. But it's a pain in the a$$ to do that over and over and over...
Uninstall the market updater app. (I used Titanium Backup for that.)

nook hidden settings

I have a nook color and had some problems with it updating to the newest bn software so I had to go through a lot of different procedures to get it back to the rooted version and now I am having problems getting the hidden settings app to download and work. I have tried to put the app by brianf21 on my nook but it wont work. When I download it I can't get it to open and run. I have searched some threads and found nothing so far. Any ideas on how to access my hidden settings? Are there other apps that will let me do this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

No... when you go into the nook tools one of the check boxes on the top is missing text... that is the Allow non market apps.

Really sorry to keep asking, but I am not able to see "missing text" in the tools. I have looked in the nook tools and in the apps under tools and I haven't seen anything that says "missing text"? Am I looking in the wrong place or is it possible that I am unable to see that based off what I did to root my nook? I had some problems with my nook auto updating on its own and had to go through a bunch of different steps to reroot it. I'm not sure if I installed everything I need to or if there is something I am missing?
Again thanks for all your help and I understand that it is probably a really easy fix, I just can't seem to find what I need to get it working.

I don't see any missing text in my tools?
So when I turn on my nook do I need to go "nook color settings"? Is there something special I need to go into on the settings? When I do this there is nothing out of the ordinary. I am not using CyanoBoot. Should I be? It seems like something is missing from my nook that is not allowing me to access the hidden settings that I need to stop it from auto updating. The instructions that everyone has told me so far seem very simple but I am just not finding anything in my tools that is missing text, which leads me to believe I don't have something downloaded that I should or maybe I am in the wrong thing on my nook.
I was looking at the app that brianf21 created and I have been unable to install this on my nook. Is that what I am missing to be able to access the hidden settings? I have tried to install this app and it won't allow me to. It fails when I try to download it onto my nook. On screen shots of the app brianf21 created I see "unknown sources" in the app settings but I don't have this available. Is this what I am lacking? And if so how do I install this app? I tried through app installed and a package installer and both failed.
Lets start over... tell us exactly what you have done so far as pertained to "rooting", since you originally state you "had to go through a lot of different procedures to get it back to the rooted version"... Knowing what you have really done will help us tremendously in trying to provide you some help.
Originally out of the box I had a nook color with 1.4.2 firmware and I looked online for how to root it and found some different threads on how to do this. On my sd card I downloaded the clockworkmod and manual nooter 5.02.19. When I did this I ended up with a rooted nook. I didn't do anything else after installing these on my nook until a few weeks ago when my nook auto updated and I ended up with 1.4.3 firmware.
After the update I was unable to access my android apps unless I shut the nook down and started it back up, this would give me access to my android apps for 30 sec to a min before going back to the barnes and noble screen, so I looked online in xda threads to see what I needed to do. I posted a thread on xda stating my situation and got a few different leads on what to do. The first thing I tired to do was just reroot my nook with the original files, which didn't work. After I tried that I started looking at threads on fixing partitions. I downloaded emmc-repair-partition-1-4-5-6-7-8.zip and emmc-format-partitions-5-6-7-8.zip. After I put those on I had to do emmc-repair-partition-2.zip. Next I put on nookcolor-1-4-1-signed.zip and then reverted to 1.4.1 firmware. After that I used the same clockwork and manual nooter as I did the first time. Now I am rooted again but am unable to get the brianf21 hidden settings app to install. I want to prevent my nook from updating again to avoid any of this again.
I hope this helps solve my problem. There were a couple other reformat zips that I tried on my nook before the emmc repair ones, but they didn't seem to have any effect at all.
Thanks for all the help thus far it is really encouraging.
You went through a lot of extra steps... all you really needed to do was re-manual noter 5.02.19 after it updated... Anyway... after you manual nooter it... in the nook color tweaks app (i think that's what its called in mn) on the app installations there will be a checkbox on top that will not have any text describing it... that is the checkbox for allowing non market apps.

I downloaded the hidden tweaks app but I don't see any checkbox that is unchecked. In the tweeks there are settings for audio, boot, cpu, display, usb, 2 places to donate, and finally nook tweaks 1.4.3. I was trying to access the nook tweaks but when I click on it nothing happens. Am I missing something?

You did not install a program called nook color tools as part of your rooting? That is where the settings are.
It is part of the package in manual nooter 5.02.19. The brianf21 app you see in the market is called hidden settings and is for the Nook Tablet.
You can get the Nook Color Tools app here.
Edit: After re-reading your original post, I see you are not looking to allow non-market apps, you are looking to stop the OTA updates. I don't think there is any setting in any nook color apps to do that. That brianf21 app has it, but that is for the Nook Tablet. I think you have to manually edit the settings database with root explorer/sql editing software. Search nook color forums for how to do that.

I do have the nook color tools on my nook. When I go into "color tools" what am I looking for? There are roughly 30 different settings in color tools, I have looked through many of them and not been able to locate anything that looks like missing text.
I have the nook color, not the tablet so does that mean the brianf21 app won't work for me? You are right that I am trying to stop OTA, but I thought that I needed the brianf21 app to do that. So are you saying that I don't need the brianf21 app? And there is another way for me to stop the OTA?
Thanks.

This has been such a long, confusing thread people lost sight of the fact that you were looking for blocking OTA. Almost all of the advice about missing text, etc was for allowing non-market apps.
As I said in my edited post above, The brianf21 app is for Nook TABLET and will not run on Nook COLOR. The Tablet is a completely different device and apps built for it will not work on the Color. And there is no Nook Color app to block OTA for you. Also as I said earlier, you must use the root explorer/ sql editor method to do it.
All I had to do was a simple search on Nook Color XDA for block OTA. Search is your friend. See the post here.
I don't see anything in the OP about blocking OTA... said he got OTA'd and re-rooted... and was having issues getting hidden settings app to dl and install... the advice given to that end was to provide assistance in getting (any non market) app to download and install... as that is what it appeared to me he was trying to achieve.
Maybe I'm just misreading it... I am DIZZY after all
You're right Dizzy, not about being dizzy, LOL, but about him not really revealing what he was looking for until several posts into this mess. He said he wanted to prevent the update from happening again and I knew brianf21's app had that setting. I guess I just read between the lines. Hopefully he is on track now.

[Q] Anyone know how to back out of screens without a back arrow?

I cant seem to find a way to back out of screens that don't have back arrow. Most apps/screens have a back arrow that I can ack out of of to return to where I was. However, not all screens have this and I don't know how to back out of them. On my Nook Tablet, I could swipe from right to left on the lower screen to back out of these windows but this gesture doesn't appear to work on my new Nook HD+.
One example is in File Explorer ES. When I load File Explorer, go to App Manager and then pull up a particular app, it's details screen comes up. From there, I have no idea how to back out of that screen. I can press the Home button and get back to Home and go to other apps but, if I try to go back to File Explorer, it's still stuck on that same screen, and I'm assuming it will be until I find some way to back out of it.
I've searched online and haven't had any luck finding any help with this one.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

It doesn't. But if you ever have that problem and you have backed up your device with my cwm (you have, haven't you?), then you can temporarily turn off the device while it is bootlooping and insert the CWM card and let it boot to that. Then you can restore, fixing the problem. I did not say in my thread, but it is a good idea to periodically back up the device before you make major changes so you don't have redo a lot of stuff after you restore.
I think I will add this advice to my thread.

That would be a cool app if it worked properly. It hides the bar nicely, but does not let you bring it back without a reboot. At least on my rooted stock HD.

The same problem for me.
It seems trivial but not being able to exit nook apps such as "reader" is keeping me from using them. I currently use coolreader for that very reason. I acually think the default font and formatting is superior in the nook reader.

Not connecting to the net now with 2.10

I have a rooted stock with GAPPS+Extras+Locations. It worked perfectly. The biggest reason I rooted is because I got the error when I would connect to the internet where it required me to agree to terms, put in a username or just confirm anything. So, I would switch the the Android Launcher, use the browser and connect to the internet without a problem.
Now, due to the update 2.10? It removed the original nook browser, which I used in the other launcher and now nothing will connect me to the net. How can I fix this? The specific error is called: 405
The original nook browser is still there, you just need to activate it in your profile. Tap your name at the top of the screen and select edit profile, then manage content, then apps. Then put a check mark in browser.
