this battery drainage seems to be a big problem with HTC one, is it really as bad as people/users are saying?
if the drain is that bad on the standby should i withhold getting HTC one? im out of the house for more than 14 hrs per day and a juiced up phone is what i need!
GS4 or ONE?
please advise

Actually the battery isn't a problem at all with the One! It is way above average for todays smartphones (not counting in the Note II)
You will generally get 6h of screen time with "xda-user" (most likely higher usage then the average consumer) which is amazing.
I leave the house at 7am and come home at around 10pm, that is 15 hours and the One has been holding up great!
I can't see the GS4 being any better. AMOLED + bigger screen = more power consumption (you need higher brightness etc.).. and in my eyes the One is the better phone over all too... so my advice is to get a One and you will be really really happy!
You may still want to invest 40$ in a portable external battery so you can charge your phone on the go .. just in case

Wait for GS4 Exynos OCTA performance tests to decide.
Maybe the OCTA will be more power-friendly.
Nevertheless, AMOLED 5'' screen of the GS4 seems to be better than the HTC One's . Even the brightness is not an issue anymore cause the new AMOLED is seen better on sunlight than the SLCD3! It suprised me cause the S3 was bad on sunlight. Source: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_vs_htc_one-review-913p3.php

Thank you, but was the incremental loss of battery while it's on standby?? I even gsmarena says that the standby time is pretty horrible..

Is that with wifi/data on, receiving all the notifications??
Screenshot for the battery drain please?
Thnx given
I still have my 2011 HTC Phone here with 1500mAh battery and I get like 0 to 1% battery drain overnight.
Although I know someone there who get results like this with HTC One so the device is not an issue. Just trying to say that SmokyM79 might have wakelock issues there.

Didn't manually turn any data off the one has sleep mode which turns off data after long periods of inactivity, I have that checked, as for wakelock I'm comfortable with 4%.

The One gets better battery life than the GS4. Rogue apps holding wakelocks won't help either way.
On the related subject of monitoring battery consumption, I have used battery monitor widget since I owned my first Android phone , a Desire HD, however it doesn't measure current correctly on my One.
Does anyone have a recomendation for an app that currently supports the HTC One ?

already replaced the battery before i got the new phone.
Dude same here. It's obvious the N1 is lacking in battery technology. What new phones are you considering?
that's definitely a dead battery, I've got my Nexus One since 2nd March and keep using it till now, still there is 92% of usable capacity.
Check the battery cal thread. We just finally hacked the nexus battery EEPROM chip and can tweak voltage etc. The changes got merged this week. So maybe some hope still...
well these things can definitely kill the battery extremely quickly if you use them a lot.
i personally don't have a problem with the battery life on mine on a normal work day because i only use it probably on average 5-10 min an hour for a 9 hour work day and by then i'm usually at 50-65% battery depending on how much i used my phone.
if you suspect that the phone is the problem and not the battery then try downloading currentwidget its a small widget that will tell you exactly how much power your phone is using in miliamps. it takes about 1 min for it to refresh so it does not work in real time but this is kind of nice because it allows you to see how much power its taking (or receiving if its on the charger) when its in idle
mine usually reads 3-5 mA when i unlock it so that is what its taking when its in sleep mode.
the most i've ever seen it take when draining the battery is about 465mA i would say that the average drain when i'm using it for browsing websites and using simple apps with the screen at half brightness is about 350-400ma or so
one thing is for sure though if you use an N1 heavily it can and will kill the battery in a matter of hours, if i play angry birds for example with my screen on half brightness after a few hours i'm at about 20-30% battery easily and the phone itself is very warm from the constant CPU use.
and btw the bad battery life is the combination of the AMOLED that takes massive power compared to an LCD and the 1st gen Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1ghz, battery life without the screen on and with minimal CPU use like streaming music for example or playing music with BT headphones i can go all day easily. it only drains like 5% an hour maybe a tad more but the difference is that the CPU is not working very hard and the screen is off completely.
AMOLED using more than LCD? What did you smoke mate? ^^
AMOLEDs have been made for low power consumption, especially for black colors...no way it uses more battery than my SLCD variant...

they can take less power with the proper screens yes, they are dynamic in their power consumption like plasma's are in that how much power they use is directly related to what they are displaying and what the brightness (or contrast in the case of plasma's) is set at.
LCD's are predictable and constant with their power drain.
AMOLED's are capable of consuming more power than LCD's of the same size if given the right display material (mostly white, mostly brightly lit content)
considering that most of the websites and even some apps i use on my nexus have white backgrounds it explains why my screen pulls so much power when i'm using it

There was a test done somewhere that showed that all the phones with AMOLED variants did the worst in battery life. Best battery? Droid x
true, white on white, amoled does use more battery...but meh...argh it killed my point xD
haha yeah you're right I guess Websites should have black background and green text, just like my terminal, gmail, etc. meh ^^

that sounds jsut like my phone. 5 to 10 minutes of use an hour and im at 60 percent. that cant be normal! angry birds for 10 minutes is like 8 percent battery loss. like i said i got a new battery for my old nexus one then noticed that the "issue" still existed so i got a new nexus one and my phone still dies rapidly. why is it that some nexus ones are better. i hear people say they get excellent battery life and to me on a brand new nexus one with a uv kernel my battery life is still horrible?
It's normal there is nothing wrong with your nexus one they suck battery if you use them heavily

I noticed a huge battery consuption in standby, about 38mA in stanby (on Desire was 5-8mA). I tried many different ways: disabeled mobile networks, hard resetted the device, but the result is the same. On the device 1.36.405.1 built is running.
Has anybody met the same problem?
Yeap, probably because sense is anoying, constant sync or something like that. And somehow I think they didn't optimized it very well.. probably wait for updates
And 1 or 2 mA is something I have never seen. How did u managed that?
I get between 30mA and 150mA in standby, rising to around 260mA when screen is on, peaking up to around 400mA occationly. I got these results from a free app called Battery Monitor. Would be interesting to see what others get, and anything that can help reduce the mA figures significantly ? I'm not overly impressed with the IS battery life so far.
there is a huge difference on stand-by battery consumption in htc official website..
with Incr. S you have 8mp cam, but with Desire S you got better battery...
The difference is huge.. :/
isnt is the desire S released with gingerbread and the Incredible S with froyo?
maybe thats the reason
However, battery lasts much longer than dhd, hd2, and even desire z! It's a fact, I have tested myself. It's all due that ugly bump at the back of the phone which covers new 1450ma battery which lasts me all day without charge.

cant really complaign about battery at all, since my old phone whas hardly making it for 18 hours, this phone would even reach 36hrs for sure, and i use wifi at home, bluetooth in the car, 3g all day, and play games as well
CurrentWidget use to measure power consumption.
In standby using 3G i got 38mA, when i switch to airplane mode increase to 142mA!!! How is this possible? What values you measured?
battery consumption
In my case, minimum 36mA and maximum 440mA, but battery life very good, two times better as by my HD2, also better as by my, already sold, Trophy. I am curios when Gingerbread will come Q2 this year, will be better or not?!
I think Incredible s battery life is pretty good for me.
Link is my inaccurately test.Standby for almost 192 hours or 7.4mA.
Better than Desire HD,Desire Z and Desire in my hand.

I just switched from iPhone 4s and 2 hours on would have only drain my battery maybe half that at most
so by your comments, iPhone 4S would be at 50% after 2 hours and your HTC is at 60% after 2 hours?
No I'm saying my 4s would be at 80percent easily

I have no problems making it last all day (Unplug it when i wake up, and charge it when going to bed. Don't need much sleep, so on average thats an 18 hour day). Most of the times I have around 40% left.
Yesterday I was on a Skype call for 2 hours (voice only) and it used about 25-30%. After that still lots of messages via viber which meant waking the device often and quite a lot of screen on time. Also played a game (Mini Motor Racing) for about 10 minutes, was on facebook from time to time. All this mostly on WiFi. Actually used the "regular phone function" twice for about half an hour total.
When I got home I had ~25% left.
My phone is rooted and has a custom rom on it: ARHD 9.4 with ElementalX Kernel. (slightly overclocked, cant remember exactly, but I think I mostly went with the default/recommended settings on the kernel)
What really improved my battery life was to stop using Battery Monitor Widget Pro, even if I love graphs and stats etc.
Right now I'm using GSAM Battery Monitor to keep an eye on apps misbehaving.
The phone seems to do a good job handling screen brightness. Sometimes I turn it all the way up using power toggles.
What can really bring down battery life is turning on Best WiFi performance in the advanced WiFi settings menu. So you might want to check if that's turned off. My WiFi / data is set to be always on.
Hope my little tips/experiences help you a bit. This phone is truly the best one (in the smartphone department) I've ever had when it comes to battery life. It even has my girlfriend wanting one and she's had every iPhone. Of course I take great pleasure in letting her know how awesome this phone is.

I have had the One since April 25

I've been a 32GB unlocked HTC One owner since day one. Battery life for me has been very mediocre, barely enough to make it through a work day with light to moderate usage. For some reason this phone drains so much on standby it's ridiculous. Last week I finally gave in and decided to root. I've found that standby still sucks but the screen uses less power so I can get more screen on time on average. I'm running InsertCoin with ElementalX kernel and for every hour of standby I lose ~3+ percent of battery! I'm not even using the phone! I have EVERY APP on my phone Greenified, Google Search, Gmail, and Play Music uninstalled, I have the phone undervolted and monitor everything with Wakelock Detector and GSAM. Nothing looks weird to me but for some reason my standby still sucks. I've literally crippled my phone and have all location services turned off and I still can't get good standby time. My iPhone 5 could last forever on standby, literally 3-5 hours without losing a single percent. I've been using Android for years and the only phone that got GOOD battery life was the Note 2. At this point I'm considering going back to it because I'm sick of micromanaging my phone and still not getting good results.
Is anyone else having similar issues? There are some people here getting 6+ hours on screen time with ridiculous numbers like 38 hours without a charge. I can't get anywhere near that even with the screen on the dimmest settings. I don't understand how there's so much variation in battery life. I don't play any games or watch movies on the phone, just simple social networking and music for 30 minutes a day.
The HTC one isn't the best phone when it comes to standby time but still,I find battery life to be pretty good, super easy to get through a work day. Maybe you have an app that is running in the background and draining your battery. Install betterbatterystats and try monitoring your apps. That's all I can think of. Also take a look at the battery stats thread and see if folks can help you there.

As you are well aware, there can be a myriad of causes. I just want to recount one example where I made a settings adjustment which cut my battery life by over half. I doubt very much this is the reason for your poor battery life but perhaps others may benefit.
About a month ago I purchased a brand new router. Being a tinkerer, I was fiddling with this and that on the router trying to optimize everything. I also played with the phone and amongst various settings I decided to turn on "best wifi performance". The One has the warning about "may consume more power", but I did not think much about it as I knew I had very good battery life and believed that a bit more power would probably not change matters that much.
Later on in the evening I saw that my battery life was horrendous and I started scratching my head as to why it had gone to hell in a hand basket. Finally, I recalled that I had adjusted "best wifi performance" and did a search on this and found a thread on another forum.
I turned it off, recharged my phone and followed battery life keenly. 24 hours later, I could see that my battery life had returned to normal (normal being between 4-6 hours of screen on time over the duration of a full charge).
Interested if the mods will lock this thread in that they may feel that this should fall under the battery stats thread.

Battery life of the One is pretty good for most people but there are some issues for some of us and lately some apps have updated and introduced even more bugs causing drain, I'll list some of the causes I found:
-msm_hsic_host wakelock bug on kernels pre- android 4.2.2
-location bug in google play store 4.1.6, fixed in 4.1.10
-whatsapp post juli 1st update (and the one before)
-htc usage reporting (on by default on s-off devices)
-reporting location setting on (in maps)
-some sim cards might not work to well which cause more frequents wake up (eg. in the netherlands vodafone sim cards with a serial number starting with 7 )
to properly debug you need wakelock detector and better battery stats (free here for xda users, search for it)
Edit:Just got an update for Whatsapp (and Facebook and Skype all at once), let's hope it fixes the battery drain.....
Maybe undervolted too much.

Although I have pretty good battery life when screen on (~5-6 hours), I have noticed the same drain as you when phone is in standby. The only huge wakelock that I have found is called 10113, AudioOut_4 or system*wakelock* mediaserver. I know that this process is for audio output but its draining like 20% of my battery when standby I was wondering if you have noticed this same wakelock on your phone?
I whatsapp and check Twitter news apps sometime a game.
And i can do easy 12 hours max 17 with this usage .

I was just thinking of the good battery performance I've been getting from the handset so far funnily enough.
I think it's been very good after only a couple of days with it.
Been using it moderately to heavy and it's held up pretty well. Over 13 hours now. Maybe it's certain apps u are using that's giving u problems with high drainage.

I got mine FIXED !
I was having similiar problem with my HTC One tends to overheat a lot resulting in poor battery life. I tried every known tricks to get better battery life still no hope. Went to HTC Care in my area and told about the issue they immediately took it for repair (the phone was only one week old). After like waiting three days I got my phone and back there was a paper which describes about the repair Its said in the problem description "Display Abnormally and Battery Calibration issue" I dont know what they meant with display abnormally they really got fixed my battery life. Before I used to get 6 to 7 hours of battery life now I m averaging a day or two with moderate to light use. I m satisfied ! :good:

I think you misunderstand what overheat means. The HTC One does NOT overheat. You feel the heat more cos of it's metal body, which is releasing the heat through the metal surface. It's directing heat AWAY from the internals, unlike the S4 which uses the same chip and keeps all the heat inside cos plastic is a terrible heat transfer medium.

I know that but mine was like 48 C at the peak when its hot which is very uncomfortable to hold that's why I said overheat. Anyway now its fixed and I don't have any complaints.

Also be sure to not use screen lock sounds or input sounds... the lock sound is the worst. I think it causes a wakelock bug that has been on Android since 4.0

Hi, For those who got nexus 6 somehow or who can just guess:
How much is battery going to be ?
Also when they say 8 hours of usage from 15mins charge, 8 hours of video? Or browsing? Or calling ? Or.... 8 hours of what usage ? How long does it take for it to fully charge? And how many percent does the battery get charged after 15mins?
This is just the most awesome thing its like its built for me , only problem is battery life ! (my nexus 4 batterylife is not good, but not unbelievable !) i always carry my nexus 4 charger with myself !(in my pocket)
+ , i hope my father will have some money till than :| or i should give up my espresso machine

Its got simmilar specs as the note 4, so you can expect simmilar performance.
Also, dont expect it to arrive anytime soon around the world.
phoneareana tweeted it lags behind the note , but link is broken.

Embargo+Not final software which is why they pulled the link.
Also, the title is very misleading, the difference in life is an hour apart between devices.

Even if it isn't the final software, it's still very surprising to me. I thought for sure it would beat the note out.

They've only said how many hours in how many minutes of charge. But if I had to guess, it's probably 25% in 15 minutes. And the 8 hours is most likely standby time.

One hour isn't bad, especially if the software is still being tweaked. Were you able to see the link at some point, or how do you know there is an hour difference between the devices?
Just found the link, even better, only about 50 minutes separate the two.

Awesome ! Thanks guys!
Just one last Question : do you think that quick charge can damage the battery(lifespan) ?
Thats still great!! Awesome ! Even if that isnt the final result(tweak ect) its great!
My nexus 4 battery is so small!!! I always keep the charger in my pocket! + a solar panel connected to a power bank(900mah) in trips

Yes, that's why i'm putting custom kernel on mine, and lower the current. Both batteries are amazing, and last long enough, only 50 mins difference, but Nexus 6 display is also bigger, so there is that.

As long as the battery lasts until the next nexus comes out. I'm OK. Surely this has been tested enough to get a year out of the battery. Time will tell. But it does tapper off after it has so much charge. I'm putting a little faith in battery technology. And maybe I could use custom kernel and then flash stock when I NEED a quick charge

Ahh, the good ol' battery life questions. Most stupid/ridiculous/irrelevant question anyone can ask because it is very much subjective. 4 hours SOT could only mean 2 for someone else, and maybe closer to 6 for others.
There are so many things that can influence how good or bad battery life is for each and every individual - some things can make a significant difference. Everything from the apps you use, those that are signal in the background, screen brightness, cell signal quality, are you using wifi, is your phone in airplane mode, do you play games and if so do they also require an internet connection.
Battery life questions and more than that, battery stats pictures drive me absolutely insane. Those that post them are clearly highlighting their lack of knowledge and general stupidity.

But i plan to keep my nexus 6 untill end of my days!
Btw! I was waiting for answers like: WI-FI: On,min brightness : 7hours of video playback!
I saw tests like this on gsmarena, all tests are at same setting so i can get idea of how long they last!

+ there is no repair stuff here! So when battery is gone so is my phone :/
Even if they open it, they likely break some parts or scratch it horribly! And make it greasy!

I sure hope it doesn't hurt the battery. I'm not an expert in that department. This is the bad part about a newer technology. Maybe that's why apple is always 3 years behind. Lol

The charging current itself shouldn't really impact the wear on the battery. The only increased wear would be due to the increased heat generated by faster charging.
That said, I think it's a good trade-off. My Nexus 5 charges to full in about 1h20m, and I'm able to deal with the lackluster battery life as a result.

You are wrong. They both affect battery life. There are current limits, and recommendations because of this.
Who here actually works for a battery company? We have no idea what they have done to maybe make this efficient.

Sure we do, they use 2A charge rate, instead of ~1.5/1.2
