[Q] Wifi sharing via wifi on Android - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I know the thread's title may sound ridiculous, but it's really not.
I'm looking for a way to share my mobile wifi connection (I'm currently using the latest HTC one device) via wifi.
Meaning, I'm connected to a wifi network from my Android device, and I want to share this connection with other laptop/pad/mobile devices via wifi.
So my device acts both as wifi client to a hot-spot infra, and also like a hotspot infra for other devices.
In the past, I did it successfully using my iphone and MyWi app.
I've spent quite some time goggling for a solution, but non of the threads/articles I've read really address this problem, as most of them refer to sharing the mobile data connection rather than the wifi connection.
this is the closest thread I've found (from 2010) and it refers to wifi sharing via USB and not wifi.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1276723
the reason I'm looking for such a way is that I have a iPass certificate on my mobile, which enables me to connect freely to iPass wifi hotspots around the world (popular at airports for example) and I want to use this connection with my laptop or my friends mobile devices.
can anyone shed some light on this subject?

I don't think it can be done. I'm it aware of any WiFi devices that can do this

pdanet? would share your phones connection to laptop via usb tho i think

I found exactly an app for my pc called virtualrouterplus . So when I fly and there is paid wifi, I connect on my pc then I share the wifi with my phone at no extra cost. thats what you want. and I set up a password just like a hotspot.

How have you been doing this? Is it via USB or are you able to use WIFI? If it's WIFI, please tell me how you managed it.

MyWi on iPhone
MyWi on iPhone does the job perfectly... I can use it to extend the range of my wifi router by twice! I was also really quite curious as to why this hasn't happened on android yet... Although I do remember someone had started working on something like this a few months ago.... Wish I'd bookmarked it now....

What is the recommended method of wireless tethering?
In the past I would flash a custom ROM that would allow me to tether my Tablet, laptop etc to my phone and use it as a hotpot.
I've noticed some of the apps available alert my Cell provider, and they send me an e-mail, text message, and Voice-mail to basically cut it out or they'll jack my data plan up another $50 per month.
Any help on this would be awesome.

I also want this option any help?

i ended up flashing a custom ROM that supported wireless tethering. Worked like a charm.
On my S2 I used AOKP
on My new HTC One I used Android Revolution HD

What do you mean by tethering?
Do you mean wifi to wifi or do you mean cellular to wifi?
I've been dying for a wifi to wifi solution on Android to not avail. It's my only regret selling an iDevic.

didnt you read the thread?
He had an iPass on his device and could share it through his phone to his laptop without having to pay extra for his laptop.
In my case, my school's wifi is 802.1x so devices like Chromecast or PS3/360 can't get on not because they don't want them on the network but because the Cisco security they have needs the hardware. So Wifi to wifi enables them to connect.
Another reason, also previously mentioned, would be to simply use your phone as an range extender. If your phone has good Wifi connection, but the devices on the other end of house do not, you just rebroadcast the signal for them.

4g to WiFi
Basically use ur phones as a WAP (wireless access point)
You can then access the internet with any device (in your case a laptop)

You quoted someone else but I'm guessing you're talking to me. And apparently I didn't read the original post as carefully as I thought I did. My laptop shares Wi-Fi over WiFi and I know it has three antennas for Wi-Fi and cellular but what is required hardware wise to do this on a cell phone?

Sorry for the mis quote.
I'm not sure about the hardware requirements which is what makes me think this is not a thing on Android phones, but is on an iPhone.
I know even older laptops can share WiFi and is how I'm currently making due. But its so annoying to have to lug my laptop around and make sure its charged in order to get to use my Vita/3DS or like Roku. It works for now, but I really wish my Note could do it like my iPhone did.
I'm thinking about just buying a iTouch and using that.

Tethering questions?

Although not new to android I am new to the idea of internet tethering from my android device.
In all honesty, I have never used it so I don't understand it, therefore I'm confused.
I have free internet included in my price plan. Will tethering go outside this and cause charges from my service provider?
Also atm I'm using CM 5.0.7 test 1 on my g1 which has tethering in the settings menu. Will this work for games consoles such as the wii?

Most providers have "soft caps" regarding data usage that seems above the normal use on your account. T-Mobile offers the "unlimited" data plan, but they also will provide you with much slower internet speeds if your account usage goes over a certain amount. This is why it is referred to as a soft cap.
As far as using if with your gaming console, my experience is that you are going to get 3G speeds while tethering (obviously) and while this is enough for light browsing on your laptop, I am sure its not enough for gaming or streaming. As far as the general "will it work" question, I doubt it because I think there are drivers required to be installed on the device you wish to tether.

When you enable wifi tethering on your android device I am about 90% sure that it is an adhoc connection. And unless something has changed recently in the wii software, it doesn't support adhoc unless perhaps your connecting to another wii device. I could be wrong though.

However, I find myself always stuck with one question.
Is it really worth it?
There's no way it can actually be fast enough to play a game decently.

I thought this was true but this question seems to come up a lot.. I have the ATTM version and thought maybe the others have this removed...
Goto Settings > wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot
You can use USB or Wifi... I actually have only used wifi
i use the tether option on my unlimited AT&T data plan and connect my ipod to it without paying the extra fee. In one month i used 8GBs of data.

the last time i tried to tether (about a month ago) my devices could connect to my adhoc network, but it seemed as though at&t was somehow detecting and blocking their traffic.

I'm not the best person to ask but there are ways to tell; user agents, deep packet inspection, the sheer volume of traffic.
That's why I was posting, to ask.

You can tether computers with bluetooth.

So, I was bored and sitting in class, when I decided I should add my D3 to my laptop as a bluetooth device (for file transfers down the road).
After I established a connection, I figured out you can tether through bluetooth.
Here's how (for Windows 7):
1) Press Start
2) Open "devices and printers"
3) Enable bluetooth on your phone
4) Click on "add a device" in the top-left of "devices and printers" on your computer
5) Establish a connection.
6) Find your D3 in the list of devices
7) Right click the phone's icon
8) Hover your mouse over "connect using" so that "access point" pops out to the right of the menu
9) "Click "access point"
10) INTERNET
just found this out too...
is there any way for verizon to figure out that youre doing this (other than the obvious 'if youre torrenting and pulling huge amounts of data they'll know')
I don't know if they can or not. I've pulled over 15gb of data this month (on my Incredible before I switched to D3 2 days ago) using the wireless tether app. I know they can't with that, so maybe this works the same way.

They offered unlimited packages then get indignant when someone uses more than a couple hundred megs.
They put the new tiers in place PURELY to make money. They know as people start using netflix and spotify/pandora they will use more and more data. They could have beefed up the network, or charged people so much money that people won't be able to use the features they bought on said phones.
They went with option B.
I didn't see this post before, I've been trying to get Wifi Tethering to work on my SIM Based (3G) Droid 3 on Telstra (in Australia).
I tried everything, new ROM, wifi tether hack, tether market apps but nada. It would connect to Wifi, but either NAT doesn't work, or something like that is stopping data from passing "through" the phone.
This morning I thought maybe I can get Bluetooth tether to work with my Asus Transformer (unrooted).
After pairing, and selecting "Internet Access" in the pairing options on the tablet everything works! Awesome. I was so close to sending this phone back.
All I need to do now is work out how to fix the CRAPPY battery life! (and figure out wifi tether when I have more time).
Cheers
If you want more battery life, get the official extended battery. It gets me through a heavy day of usage with ~20% to spare.

The technology has been around a while, its greedy carriers that have been blocking it. It makes no sense with metered data plans, x GB is still x GB whether consumed on the phone or on a tethered computer. We are surprised the Droid 3 and other Droid phones can bluetooth tether for free without root. Why would I pay for wifi tether when bluetooth is free. I'm not sure what the speed limit of bluetooth is but I get full 3G speeds.
Mine is extremely slow on my work laptop compared to when I use the mobile hotspot. Is this normal? It's a work laptop and they still force me to use windows XP could that have something to do with it?
Is this free without any rooting/hacking?

In my experience, no you would not get charged. I've used a couple of different wifi tethering apps in the past and it worked great! I'm now on Fusion ICS rom and ICS has the option built in to allow tethering. It works great as well. So as long as you're rooted and can install 3rd party apps, which it seems you are, then you should have no problems.

root: free tether: use 3g on same phone

Hi, Im interested in rooting my G note.
I rooted my HTC HD2 a long time ago and it was just alot better (custom roms). HOWEVER:
Im interested in this android tether application: Obviously you can tether you 3g you pay for monthly with the phones default settings. BUT
using root access, does this mean you can cancel your contract!, get a pay as you go contract, use the android tether to effectively steal the 3g data and then stream it to the same phone over wifi and browse for instance on Opera mini, mobile firefox, receive email over it?
or, is it the case that you can only tether to other devices such as ipod touch,,another wifi capable phone?
I can't really see the use in this otherwiseunless you carry around two phones all the time.
Can someone clear this up please because all the videos Ive watched they only prove it works on another device.
thanks very much, and I hope this works
by the way , I am based in the UK, have the standard european version and Im on a 3g network called 3. If this only works withother uk providers Id be happy to switch to orange/t-mobile , O2 etc

Forgive me as i dont really understand what you're looking for. Is there a link to the tethering app you're speaking of? Tethering apps are usually so you can use your phones 3g for your laptop/pc. If youre on 3, then youre unlimited bundle comes in handy. A friend of mine tethers his sgs2 t9 his laptop using unlimited 3g as his broadband connection and has done for some time now without being restricted.
I dont understand when you say "steal the 3g from a pay as you go phone" to your note? That seems pointless. Surely yiu could just stick the pay as you go sim into your note?
Also, there are a lot of tethering apps that dont require root access.

I thought one of the advantages of rooting your phone is to be able to not pay the monthly contract and use the tethering wifi from whichever network your on.

yeh I know this....so...
oh, so it is only when you have a data plan already, you get tethering for free. when rooted. Nothing special then. ''. ?
so you can't have no data plan and effectively steal free data? ? '',
oh wait: having said that i was thethering a few months ago and my bill was huge: so I dont get it for free..
so reverting my original question:: does this work on the 3 network in the uk? thx
also:
couldn't i just root like an old samsung galaxy, keep it in my left pocket, travel the world , lol and keep a galaxy note in the other pocket using the wifi from the old samsung?
Im a little confused too, couldn't you do this with no data plan, i.e pay as you go and when you connect to 'data 3g' they charge you as you go, but effectively just tether it to another phone for free? so basically you would just pay for calls and not internet?
Ok, what the guy is on about is thqt operators in us charge an extra bolt on for the priveledge of enabling tethering. O2 used to do it when tethering was first enabled on the iphone 3gs, it was 10 quid a month or something rediculous.
Im pretty sure that now its free to enable tethering in the uk. All it means is that you can pair your phone using existing data plan to your laptop or pc, and effectively use it as a mobile 3g modem.
So yes, tethering will work on any network or rom, you're just limited by your existing data plan as to how worthwhile it is. If you get a 3 all you can eat data plan, then its unlimited, but of course speeds are pretty crappy.
Im sure there is a way to hack an operators 3g networks and get data for free but would imagine thats a bit beyond xda's strict code of ethics
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I see, what I meant when I got charged alot was that I went over the 5GB limit.
If I was to tether for free, using the root access, would I basically 'eat up that data' whilst tethering to another device for free?
As you know, in the uk, the tethering access most commonly comes under the same data plan and isn't free in that regard.
Yes, tethering just uses your existing data plan. Try getting one of 3's all you can eats if possible, im sure theyd be willing to if you call them up.

To me it looks more like you have no idea about what rooting and tethering really is/does.... Since what you are asking is completely ridiculous...
You want to use your 3G data to send it over wifi, back to the same phone......
You can just cut out the tether part and use your 3G directly........
it's like getting into the car by entering into the trunk to get out by the back door to finally open the drivers door and sit in the drivers seat, instead of just open the drivers door right away like normal minded ppl would do.....
Guess we all start somewhere, i was confused as hell when i started out with smartphones.

it's like getting into the car by entering into the trunk to get out by the back door to finally open the drivers door and sit in the drivers seat, instead of just open the drivers door right away like normal minded ppl would do.....

just come back to this thread after a few hours: no its not because you would be getting it for free.
It is more like buying a drivers door and not actually owning a boot door or side door
surely?!
Don't you understand?? In the uk you can have a pay as you go contract and then pay extra for 3g when you use it, so instinct would suggest you could effetcivel climb into your car through the boot and into the drivers seat!!! to use the pay as you go 3g (for free) through tethering(eg the metaphorical boot ) and use the wifi receiver of the phone to use it!!! (eg the metaphorical drivers seat )
...
.. .
But anyway I understood from before that the phone can't receive that own signal. Although now Im questioning either the other persons understanding or your ignorance So what Im now saying is 'yes its useful'. But does it work in the uk where the tethering is just the same usage of the data plan eg 5GB????
Im sure I could ask 3 for unlimted but tbh the people at their contact centre are umbelievably annoying. Id prefer to use this way of tethering as it'd give me an excuse to put effort into rooting my device anyway
Strange logic indeed... Pretty sure the car would have blown up and you'd be in hospital!

strange humour. Has no one got a striaight answer to this.
Or can i assume everyone on this forum is mobile obsessed, and works for mobile phone network companies
Answer answered a few times.
I dont think you understand the principals of tethering or a normal data connection.

So, if i was to tether having rooted the phone, it would still cost me is that what your saying?
because I don't think that was said at all ?
Tether uses data from the phone. If you have no data plan, you cant tether full stop.
If you know of a way to hack 3's 3g network, please let me know, i'll transfer now.

i just found this, but, since you can have payg internet i see no reason why you couldn't tether .. Correct me if im wrong but it just seemed a naturally progressive assumption.

sorry i can't just take your word for it ,

ok I found this though http://technoratia.com/2011/12/30/three-uks-position-on-tethering-devices-to-your-phone/ three don't allow tethering on payg,,, (as its their policy)
suppose someone must do in the uk??? then it would work right? presuming the tethering is alos in the payg form and not monthly eg bolt on to a payg plan.
giffgaff allow tethering from payg but you wil lbe paying a hell of alot of money to tether on a non contract tarriff
you cannot tether if you do not have the creit on payg or a contract that gives you data each month
what exactly are you trying to achive ? internet on your laptop for free from a mobile connection and dropping a home broadband connection?
You cannot resend a tethered signal from a phone back to itself as the tethering itself uses the phone's WIFI module, and as such cannot connect to the WIFI hotspot since the phone has no additional WIFI modules. So what you're asking for is literally impossible under normal circumstances.
Also, am I right in understanding that what you're asking for is bordering on fraud/theft of services?

He is trying to enter a Tesco, and eat their M&M's without opening the bag....
And consequently not opening his wallet either
And he still doesn't understand rooting, dataplans or tethering, which isn't a bad thing, but he could just take our word for it, or read up on it.
