[NOOB] Question about Stock ROMs and Bootloader - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all, I'm new at rom flashing for Sony, but I used to flash roms on my old Motorola Milestone,
The question is that if I flash a stock rom from another region, do I have to unlock bootloader? For example mine is Thai and I want to flash stock SO-02E rom. How about flashing SO-02E rom but maintaining C6602 Thai baseband?
I'm concerning about losing DRM keys.
Thanks in advance

No need to unlock it. Just use the Flashtool and that's it. BUT I would make sure you get the original ROM of your phone before you flash any stock ROMs. You will need your original ROM so you can flash it back just for warranty purposes.

By "the original ROM of your phone", do you mean latest Thai stock rom or exactly the rom in my device? In the latter case, what are reasons?
Another question, Are DRM keys unique to each device?
Thanks

Well if you have a unbranded XZ then it would not matter if you use the latest or the one in your phone now. BUT if you have a branded phone meaning it has the pre-installed software of the telco you are using then you will need the ROM that comes from the telco you are with.
For example I got my XZ from Telstra (in Australia). My phone has Telstra splashscreen and some Telstra apps pre-installed. Now if I flash the another ROM and something breaks on my phone (hardware) and I sent it back to Telstra for warranty repairs they MIGHT refuse to repair it under warranty because I used a different software.
This may not not be the case but it is safer to have the original ROM back in your phone before you send it away for repairs.

DRM: Keys are unique to each device
By unlocking the bootloader you will looose them permanently and special functions like Bravia Engine may not work withouth them.. i unlocked my previous phone XU and B.Engine wont work anymore i recomending having it locked if you only want to flash another official firmware ...unlocking is only needed if you want to install custom kernel

Thanks both you you. So, it I get it right, DRM keys are not stored in the firmware but the bootloader itself.

From what I can understand that is correct. Once you unlock bootloader your DRM keys are gone FOREVER! Even if you re-lock your bootloader you will never get it back. So unlock your bootloader only if you really have to and you understand that your DRM keys will be lost.

Flashing FTF
Nevermind, worked well once TA was checked in EXCLUDE list.

[Q] Flashing ROM + Bootloader Xperia T

Hey guys, I am fairly new to the android phones, (recently came from an iPhone) but I had heard so much about the freedoms with the Android os so I decided to switch.
I purchased the Sony Xperia T (LT30a) locked on the Bell mobility LTE network. I have really wanted to unlock the bootloader, so when I went in to check it said "Bootloader Unlock Allowed: NO". after some searching I read that it was my carrier preventing the bootloader from being unlocked, and that if I followed the following simple steps, it would change the message to :"Bootloader Unlock Allowed: YES". so here is what I did:
1. Flashed a Generic firmware to my phone (ICS it was a uk generic) which then changed my model number in "About phone" from LT30a to LT30p and removed all the bell branding.
2. Using an IMEI number, i was able to get an unlock code and unlocked the phones sim card to work on any network, and have tested and it does work.
the problem I am having is that even after doing this, the bootloader is still "locked" and can not be unlocked. I have taken a look at the methods for the test pin, but that involves removing the battery to view the motherboard, which sucks because this phone the battery is not removable. if anyone know a free or paid way to unlock the bootloader on the Xperia T LT30a or LT30p models, please let me know! thanks.
I dont know where you read that, but it is wrong and there is no way to change that message.
If it says no, then your bootloader can not be unlocked.
Its not Sony's fault, its not googles fault, its Bells fault for being a dev unfriendly provider.
Test point method will not work even if we could remove the battery, that loophole has been closed in 2012 devices.

You can only install stock based custom roms because you wony be able to flash a custom kernel with a locked bootloader. Therefore there is no hope for cyanogenmod, AOKP or MUIU
There are several in the Dev section to choose from, ranging from early ICS firmwares to the latest JB firmware.
I dont recommend Roms (Even my own) as choosing a rom should be a personal thing, but the I am currently on Timin8rs rooted and deodexed JB rom which you can flash.
You will need to root your phone in order to flash a recovery, then flash the .zip for the rom using that recovery.
Find all instructions for doing that in the All in one thread. Its the first thread in the Q&A section.
good luck and if you need extra help after reading up on what you need to do then ask. But remember to read up first!

thank you very much! hopefully sometime in the near future they come out with a way to fix this problem, and believe me, I do not blame sony at all for this
Sorry for the double post! But I just wanted to say, that if anyone needs help testing different roms and/or ways of unlocking a locked bootloader, I do have a sim unlocked xperia T and just wanted to throw this out, but if sony does not "perma lock" the bootloader, and if it is infact the carrier, then would this not prove that it is sonething in the firmware? I spoke with my sister who is a manager for a bell store here, acording to her, Bell is not authorized to open, or attempt to fix this phone, it is simply sent to sony for repairs.. Just makes me wonder because if Bell can not open the phone, then they must have used some sort of software.. I have always thought of software as "semi-permenant" that it can be reversed , and that its only a matter of figuring out how to reverse it?

Rooting does not void warranty, who told you that.. There is a difference between rooting and bootloader unlocking. To change your customization number, you need to root without bootloader unlock. By the way, after flashing the new firmware, every trace of the root will be erased, so nobody will ever know that you rooted your phone temporary.

In part A of my guide, you can find the links to the appropriate tools that allow you to root without unlocking your bootloader. You just have to connect your phone with USB debugging enabled and run the tool. The rest goes automatically. So no need to request an unlock key from Sony or anything

Many websites say 'rooting' when they actually mean 'bootloader unlocking'. On that website, they're talking about bricking your phone and custom ROMs. That means they mean 'bootloader unlocking', because custom ROMs are not possible with a locked bootloader. While it's possible to root your phone by unlocking the bootloader, that is not always required.
For many Xperia devices, we have software exploits that allow to root your phone without touching the TA partition or bootloader. This means that all traces of the root will be erased if you flash clean stock firmware and Sony will never know.
This is not the case when you unlock your bootloader. If you created a backup of your TA partition before unlocking the bootloader, you could always restore your phone to factory state, but Sony will still know that you requested a bootloader unlock key.
Like I already said, you only have to root your phone temporary to change your customization number, without unlocking your bootloader. After flashing the new firmware, all traces of the root will be gone, so this method is completely safe and will not void your warranty.
By the way, did you edit your original post? I see you're asking firmware version 10.3.A.0.423 now. This is currently only available for the 'Generic TW' customization for C6602. This can be used perfectly in Europe and USA however. It contains all languages. You can find an FTF here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337838 or change your customization number to 1270-5691 and update with Sony PC Companion.

[Q] Unlocking the bootloader

One year have passed since I bought a Xperia Z, and I want to unlock the bootloader to install Pacman ROM. My question is, if I unlock my bootloader, will I lose the warranty? I am living in Romania, an EU country, and I know that if the phone has any hardware related problems, modified software should not mean anything and the company which produced the phone is obliged to repair it for free. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't specify this anywhere. So, if I unlock the bootloader, my warranty will be void or not? Thanks in advance
Backup your TA partition first, then unlock. If you want to claim warranty, restore the TA backup (which will relocked the bootloader) and flash a stock ftf. You can then present your device to service centre in its original state

Yeah you are right but what will I do if let's say the battery doesn't work anymore or the micro usb port is faulty? I don't think I can relock the bootloader if this two things will not work. Also if I unlock the bootloader the camera quality will decrease like it does on z2/3, or there will be no differences?
I don't have any experience with EU warranty claims, but if it covers hardware damage regardless of software modifications, then you SHOULD be fine. Maybe other users can verify.....
Unlike Z1 and above, XZ camera doesn't lose quality if you unlock bootloader. Even BE2 is still functional on latest firmware. Obviously, if you flash AOSP based roms, you will get AOSP camera, which I find to be somewhat inferior to stock.

NO. You can't unlock your bootloader if 'unlock bootloader allowed = no'
Since you cannot unlock bootloader, therefore you cannot flash custom ROM on your phone.
Rooting phone do not always need bootloader to be unlocked. There will be some ways available to root your phone with LB.
Also there will be some ROMs available that can be flashed over LB. But they'll be based on stock and will not have more features rather than stock features.
You just need to search here on XDA
I suggest you not to flash any ROM on LB. You'll eventually get bootloops and maybe hard brick.

Nope! As much as I know, you cannot change status from 'no to yes' rather than changing your motherboard to do so. It'll cost you more than you buyed it.
It is related to TA Partition. And EVERY phone has its unique TA. So no one can change its status. Flashing other phones TA to your phone will brick your device.

In such case you need to roll back to your previous android version. I don't think you could unlock your bootloader. But if you are telling it was 'yes' before, then you should try.
No matter your phone works with every sim or not. TA Partition contains DRM keys as well as many other things related to network, warranty, services which get erased after unlocking bootloader.

Yes you can flash any stock ROM through flashtool. You just need to download appropriate firmware (.ftf)
Even you could update your phone through PC Companion. The latest version is 5.1.1 Available.

You mean bootscreen, right?
Just because of bootscreen are you going to change the entire ROM?
You could change bootscreen manually. Your phone just need to be rooted to do so. To root your phone use kingroot app. If your lucky enough, your phone will be rooted.
There are tons of bootscreens available. Just pick one and place it in /system/media (don't forget to backup old one) with -rw--r--r permissions and Bingo! You have changed your bootscreen.

Dude, your on latest android version. There isn't any exploit available to root ver 5.1.1
You either need to wait until anyone makes an exploit for your phone or you need downgrade your phone and root it.
There is a pre-rooted firmware available for lollipop But it works only if phone has 5.0.2 .
Unfortunately your phone has 5.1.1 that means you still need to downgrade your phone and flash pre-rooted 5.1.1
Also, your bootloader can't be unlocked. So you need to flash ROM accordingly. Don't ever flash ROM that are meant for unlocked bootloader.
Regards,
hitman-xda

As you're still using a stock based rom, open the dialer and type *#*#7378423#*#*
This will open the service menu, check under general service info (if I remember correctly). You'll find there whether or not your bootloader is unlocked.
Download flashtool by androxyde and the rom you want to flash (you'll find it here on the forum) and flash it via flashtool.
If your bootloader is unlocked, lock it with flashtool (though it won't make any difference as I'm pretty sure you didn't back up your DRM keys)
@St.Jimmy90
what if i provide him with my C6602 keys? can multiple devices be initiated with same keys?
I have rooted 5.1.1 / LB / C6602

by installing stock rom i meant to say android 5.1.1 firmware..
and in that service menu it says
bootloader unlocked allowed:yes..
so does it means i have alrady unlocked or it is locked and unlocking is allowed?

It means your bootloader is unlockable, but currently locked. You do still have your TA partition and DRM keys. To install stock 5.1.1 you can also use sony pc companion, it should be the easiest way. All your current data might be lost, though
