[Q] [SOLVED] IMEI / EFS problem - Any suggestions? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

[SOLVED]
Took it a phone shop, got charged £20 IMEI is back to factory default!
Really happy!
Hi there!
I quite stuck on what to do.
My mum had her i9000 for a while, with no problems on darkyrom 10.2.2.
Suddenly yesterday she was prompted for an "update for virgin mobile" she had no choice but to accept. Apparently it didn't do anything (ie update, reboot etc)
However what she realised is that she couldn't make calls etc.
I've got the phone with me now, and basically the IMEI number doesn't match up under *#06# - the number is a random number although not blank nor 0000 only.
Things I've tried:
-Flashed many stock roms (incl repart + PIT 4 file ones)
-Factory reset
-Flashed without SIM & EXT SD
-Tried deleting the EMPTY EFS folder
Any ideas?
I'm thinking that it needs to be sent back to samsung (even out of warranty)
EDIT:
I should note that the phone is completely factory unlocked - she is on Virgin Mobile network (SIM)
Cheers

hey man!
I've tried flashing froyo and I just put my sim in there and it still doesn't work.
I'm now wondering if it really is factory unlocked?
So I'm flashing a VOD firmware on it (as mum did have vodaphone in the past) - to see if that works, might even try "unlocking" as well.
Might as well give that a try to be honest.
Anu sent me to a dev on here - no reply from the dev yet.
Normally the "flash back to an old stock rom" method SHOULD work...but it isn't.
That's the odd thing really.
Reason I'm thinking it was locked is simple - because with SOME firmwares I flashed - I got this password screen (attached)
EDIT:
Nop - password error is something else:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016288
That booots, but doesn't solve the imei problem

Already tried that bro - didn't work
Going to try that thing listed in the video now
EDIT2:
Video guide didn't work either - also tried looking into the XDA thread.
Still no cluk - only option is via samsung.
It HAS an IMEI but a completely wrong one.
Long story short - I can use 3G and emergency calls, but cannot use texts/calls, which is a shame and very odd why it did it on its own - if it were flashed I would have understood...but nothing was touched.
This is truly a one in a kind.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857054
just seen this chris might help might not if you have allready sorted it disregard

BIG UPDATE:
Put mum's sim into her i9000 again - and it came up with the same pop-up.
Now the odd thing - did the SAME thing when we put it into her NEW (on stock rom) NOTE 2.
This time I hit cancel.
What are VIRGIN MOBILE TRYING TO DO!?
They are going to get a call tomorrow from me.
Note 2: is still safe - and we hit cancel
S1: was already "updated" and thus IMEI is completely lost.

Weird turn of events - or fortunate to some extent:
Beforehand: Texts, calls and Mobile data wouldn't work properly.
I flashed a VOD firmware on it - and out of the blue - the phone now works as it should HOWEVER the IMEI number it has vs the one printed is still incorrect - I am thinking of buying/getting a VOD SIM card and putting it in there - might that fix it?
Anyone have any ideas?
So baffled as to how the phone is working without a proper IMEI number, but yet can send/receive texts, calls, data

[SOLVED]
Took it a phone shop, got charged £20 IMEI is back to factory default!
Really happy with the outcome.
Tried EVERYTHING known to me to get the IMEI back, but it didn't work.
Long story short - back up your EFS folder - always.

[Q] Network lock Q?

Ok so I installed the leaked froyo a while back, totally wiped out my nvdata file, no backup either. Need to warranty replace my cappy so I used Helroz's galaxy s unlock to relock the phone. Now it keeps asking me to "Enter Network Lock Control Key" and I have no idea what that is now. I do have my old unlock and unfreeze codes from when I unlocked on 2.1 with dagentooboys sgs unlock app but they don't work, because I assume they are not valid since i don't have the original nvdata file.. When I unlocked it, i used the no sim method, and believe I changed the mcc code 22610 if that helps..
Any ideas on how to get this thing locked back so it recognizes my AT&T SIM??
Thanks in advance.
Bump! Really? Nobody?

and also ... since its going for warranty... **if it doesnt turn on or work**... who cares...
Yeah just odin flash back to stock and everything should be back to normal including being network lock

[GUIDE] Unbricking SamsungGalaxyMini

credits to those who found this out in other units
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i have found a solution for this problem
by reading other units solutions (even if it's posted everywhere, i just want to share this)
this thing will solve the:
E: can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
and others
unbricking steps:
- remove sim card, and sdcard
- remove battery for even less than 30-20 seconds
- hold volume down, home key and power button simultaneously and put the battery, it will go directly to Download Menu
- open ODIN and DO NOT USE ONE PACKAGE, set the files, i used XXKPI with the 4 files, CSC, APBOOT, MODEM and CODE. dont use the ONE PACKAGE in this kind of flashing. i tested it but nothing happen so i used the other option.
- flash it, wait and done! back to normal.
i thought i should bring this up to the samsung center for the warranty
though i tried other options and experimenting
whew
thanks be to GOD.
Maybe post all the 4 files for all of us?
Luckily, I don't have my device bricked... yet.
yes, u should post a few of screens

One packages contains all the needed files at a single tar or md5 file while using separate packages you use different tar for PHONE, PDA, CSC, BOOT in Odin... There is not much difference these file are also included in the one package zip file.

[Q] Lost IMEI, EFS Folders, etc.

Hey guys.
I know there are a lot of threads out there on this, but there is also a fair amount of conflicting information. Also, one thread I found seems to suggest the Captivate may work differently than other phones. That particular thread (listed below) seems to suggest the IMEI is directly tied to the model #, and editing the NV_DATA.BIN will fix the IMEI, even though it doesn't generally work on other devices)
My IMEI has turned into a generic one (quite some time ago, and I have no idea exactly when). I do not have a backup of the EFS folder. My phone works just fine, and I know for a fact I'm never returning it under warranty.
Is there any reason for me to care about this? Can my phone suddenly stop working one day because of this?
If I SHOULD be concerned, some threads suggest it's lost forever... some say flashing back to stock fixes it, and others have more complicated methods.
One promising method I've found involves a few simple edits to the NV_DATA.BIN file, but the thread is specific to the ATT version. I have the Rogers I896. This is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162&highlight=rogers
Again, if I should be concerned, are there any fellow Rogers users that would be willing to share the following Hex lines from the NV_DATA.BIN so I can try the method in that thread?
The lines are:
00188000
00188008
00188010
00188018
00188020
Thanks for any insight.

Imei captivate changed
HAHA! Earlier today I was reminded of your exact situ and how a dev a tool had wiped my original imei and replaced it (and numerous other users) with a "anonymous" IMEI... I remember that I originally freaked out a bit..oh my what if this and that..otr I want the phone unlocked et all.
Then the nerdy fixit kicked in and I recovered the original IMEI.
Today I was looking at the new captivate GO-PHONE and reading about the RIDICULOUS ABSOLUTELY INSANE WTH OVER THE TOP data plan they INSIST a smartphone MUST have.. off contract the data plans are NUTZ... and BOOP!
I was thinking 'if i could just jumble my imei around a bit.. then they would think i was using a DUMBPHONE and i could have all the precious UNLIMITED DATA... that i certainly deserve!! ahahah!! ...and have over paid for the past 9 years!!'
The day that I called in to have my phone totally unlocked the CSR asked me to punch a few buttons on my screen and read her the string.. She told me that the code i read to her was NOT from an AT&t phone and she didnt know how to unlock it.
FORTUNATELLY... Skyrocket just went on sale for a penny. So I will be signing another 2 year agreement instead of going off the grid with SIP VOIP DATA ANON shenanigans.. but figured you..or anyone else for that matter had not yet seen the light that shined down on me today so I wanted to have ya thinking 'on the bright side'

you can easily find IMEI numbers at the sides of box in which your phone came.
when u get those IMEI numbers.
open engineer mode in your phone. if you dont know how to access it, just download this app called MTK Engineering Mode from here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.themonsterit.EngineerStarter&hl=en
open this app, tap on MTK Settings.
then goto CDS Information
then to set IMEI of 'Phone 1' tap on it, Here you can see a command line with “AT+”.
Now just add this command to it EGMR=1,7,”IMEI NO” And press “send at command” button. [ if you want to change the the phone 2 IMEI AT+EGMR=1,10,”NEW IMEI NO”]
restart your phone.
n u are all set.
you can check your IMEI by just dialing *#06#
HIT THANKS IF WORKED

Phones IMEI changed without even touching it

I have this problem - my G800F changed it's IMEI to 350695200123951. When that happened I had not touched it (no root, no nothing) at evening I still was able to make calls, but later that night it showed 'not registered on network'. I have tried factory reset, reinstalling the firmware using Kies, then I used odin, tried to make EFS backup and restore, but so far I haven't had any success. So I thought that some of you brilliant minds could help me, maybe there is a way to change the IMEI in efs backup file? The only strange thing that happened to my phone couple of days before this happened is that some random number from Ukraine called me, but for obvious reasons I did not answer it nor did I call it back. So now I'm stuck using my fathers old HTC Wildfire S, I really hope that you could help me, because I want my phone back.
SOS
Sorry no answer from me but exactly the same thing with my S5 mini g800F last week (end Sept), with exactly the same false IMEI, and I think I have now tried everything. No luck. Not the Ukraine phone call though!
Cannot get into "engineermode" which may have been a way to fix this. I loaded a new firmware, still nothing. ANY help will be appreciated but please nothing that asks me to add a "secret code" as the phone does not respond to those. I'm not an expert but got desperate enough to try my hand at a terminal emulator, it did not work. Stopped short of using SDK as the download is huge. Firmware now loaded is android 4.4.2 build number KOT49H.G800FXXU1AOG2. Heeeeelp anybody! The vendor is of no use either, just mumbling "this is a very strange thing, where did you get the phone....." (bought from the guy asking!!)

Just couple of days ago got my phone back from warranty and they fixed it (thought they wouldn't since it was rooted), so I would suggest doing the same thing. At the warranty center I had to explain my problem for about 30 minutes, because they believed that phone couldn't change its IMEI. Also you could try other service centers, because some of them said that they could fix this problem for about 30-50 EUR. I believe the only thing that could help otherwise is something like the z3x box, but it would be more expensive as it costs 100+ USD.
If you download the original stock firmware you can flash the IMEI number back to the phone
:S
No solution has been under warranty , the pochaine time to think about backup your EMEI
Yes yes
there is a backup somewhere between all my external hard drives, memory sticks, cloud servers... And i can't find it, too long ago and too many passwords!! But, no use telling me now to make a "pochaine" backup. I will try the reflash to older version suggestion, and see whether that gives me access to the required features. If not, it is the mountain to climb, of getting to the samsung "support" to tinker with the phone. Glad you you are sorted sunciks. A person from xda did contact me, so lets see if that bears fruit.

You are going to have to be patient with an old person here. Making a backup of the current situation? Will it not just copy the existing false IMEI and replace on restore? Please be specific, step by step, as you would for a kid. Regards

Nope it shouldn't. The IMEI number is installed with the firmware. So if you back it up and factory reset, it should fix it.

If factory reseting doesn't work, then I suggest flashing the firmware manually.
BUP
OK I have tried this before, but just tried again. Does not work or I'm not doing it correctly.
What's the model number?
Reflash

Meaning tried to backup and factory reset. Now in process of manual flashing (via Kies). Previously found that Kies would download for an hour and then say "unexpected error...." so have not used it in more than two years. Anyway here we go again.
Model is SD-G800F [samsung galaxy s5 mini]

No, I mean downloading the firmware upgrade. It will download the new files but not install. This was long ago. Right now I get to tools to upgrade and initialise and get the message "does not support initializing" I give up!
No don't give up, just download the firmware and flash it with ODIN. If you need my to explain that, leave me an email and I'll send you the instructions.

What you propose was the second thing I did. The first was doing a factory reset with the older version of the firmware (what the phone came out with). Neither steps worked. The firmware I flashed was (Build number) KOT49H.G800FXXU1AOG2. Which btw Kies indicates as the latest version.
Don't use kies

The only reason I need an email from you is because XDA won't let me post links. The instructions I'm providing contain links so you can fix your problem.

Kies does not work anyway
Can do (email) but not on this open forum. Use the private messages
Added edit in wrong place but, given the phone to samsung tech. Will post the outcome somewhere next week
