Hi,
when I bought my sgh-t679 it was declared as wcdma quad-band, but when I went home to Europe I discovered, that it obviously isn't. On the official Samsung page it says wcdma tei band, but Ican only choose between 850 and 1900mHz. Before installing CM10 it was possible to enter the service menu by typing:
* # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * #
and then in service Mode:
-> MAIN MENU -> [3] UMTS RF NV -> [1] RF NV READ and [2] RF NV WRITE,
There are 4 bands,
[1] WCDMA 2100
[2] WCDMA 1900
[3] WCDMA 900
[4] WCDMA 850
That means the phone is coded to get reception from these 4 bands, right?
Under [1] RF NV READ, information for all 4 bands can be accessed.
So is it somehow possible to enable 2100mHz on sgh-t679 or not?

Hi Everyone,
I recently puchased a Vibrant from Bell mobility, successfully unlocked it and was using it on Bell. In areas of poor connection whenever I used the data, the network would drop completely and I'd see the circle with the line through it where my network connection is. The voice bars will come back most of the time quite quickly, but data can stay offline for sometime then randomly pop back up.
I've found this happens the most when I'm in doors.
Has anyone else using an unlocked Bell Vibrant on Telus experience the same problems?
I've done hard resets, cleared out all programs, etc. I even went to Bell and returned the handset for a new one. I'm still experiencing the issue on this new handset with absolute no added programs on it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Have the same problem.
The workaround for it seems to be doing the 850 trick. Call quaility is a little worse, but, no dropped calls anymore.
I think it is a telus thing, the way the phone tries to find the reception.
Hey kintap, thanks for the quick response.
I'm not experiencing dropped calls (yet), but when I'm using the internet indoors all connections just drop off and I have to wait for the connections to come back.
It mostly happens when I'm using the browser.
Was your problem similar?
I'll try out the 850 trick.
@meandnotyou are you also in Edmonton/Calgary area?
Telus people on GTA / Vancouver area don't seem to have as much trouble as you guys over at Edmonton/Calgary
that's according to the feedback found in the forum
Hey AllGamer, I'm from Vancouver.
I've tried changing the 850 trick as mentioned and it seems to have been ok since then. I'll keep testing and let you guys know.
It's not just a Telus thing... I'm on Bell in Vancouver and have the same issue as well.
I'm also one of those who are experiencing the comatose problem too.
I believe it's mainly a software issue where the phone has trouble locking on the signals. (I haveny seen any users who unoffically updated to froyo reporting these problems, yet).
edit: deleted.

+1. same exact problem here. On Bell. Lose signal indoors @ home.. experiencing comatose problem, usually when there is no signal. 850 trick doesn't seem to work for me. Re-flashed to JH2, factory wipe. *#272*imei# trick, etc.. all started a week ago. was working perfectly for 1st month. seems to be getting worse/more frequent.
anyone want to buy my SGS?

Wow that sucks. I was gonna wipe my phone earlier too, but read that it doesn't help...
Have you tried getting a new SIM card from Bell? When you did the 850 trick, did you double just that it was just the 850 that was selected? You can try what I selected, after selecting just only the WCDMA 850, go into the combi band and select the GSM 850 band too, that way it has a "backup". Hope this helps you if you haven't tried it already

Hey Louie604. Thanks i'll try it now. I'm a noob to Android. did the 805 trick work for you? if that doesn't work, I'll try asking for a new SIM card. When I'm outdoors, signal is strong and I have no freezing problems - only when indoors and poor signal. in Van as well.

Yea, the 850 trick worked for me (improved battery life while idling too).
Currently I'm testing just the 1900 band to see if it still locks up on me, but I won't know till I get home. I'll be posting my results in the comatose topic

Also, I should mention, when you're setting the band, make sure you do it under the service mode, otherwise the settings don't save (from what I read).
This was the instructions I followed...
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] Band selection
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850
After doing the above steps, just go into the "Combi Band" and select the "GSM 850" also... just in case it ever needs to fall back
Louie604, thanks. ok I think I may have missed something. In step 7 above, I have WCDMA 850 (FDD V) option under [5] not [6]. there is no [6]. As well, after *#0011#, I see that I'm still under WCDMA 1900 band 2, even after following your steps above. I double checked my band selection settings and they were saved. Does this mean anything?

Sorry, yes it it under [5]. (I just copied and pasted it but never paid attention to the fine details )
That's strange tho. Perhaps try this:
1) Select [1] Automatic
2) Go Back and then go into [4] Combi Bands and check to see that all are selected EXCEPT for [7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[] (It doesn't select it for me and I assume the same for you since you're in Vancouver too)
3) Go back and select [2] WCDMA Band []
4) Select [5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*] (It should then say it's selected and when you go back, it should be the only one with the [*])
5) Go back out to the "Band Selection" menu and select [4] Combi Bands []
6) Select GSM 850 [] -- When you go back after selecting it, you should see in the list this:
Code:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900 [ ]
[3] DCS 1800 [ ]
[4] PCS 1900 [ ]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[ ]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[ ]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[ ]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
Once you see those, you may simple exit out and then check again. If anything you can turn on airplane mode and then back off or restart you phone and see if it's at the 850 band.
Hope this helps
Got it. Thanks.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give an update. Since I did the band change using the 850 trick (same day I made the original post), I haven't experienced any complete network drops or comatose issues.
I am now traveling though and finding the connection to be lacking. I imagine it's because I've hard set the band, so reverting while traveling to see if it has any effect.
I know I should search first before post but believe me, I'm not a guy who like to ask dummy questions without an extensive search before.
Also probably this goes in Accessories, but is a question and is a part not accessory, so, MODs.... where?
Ok... no looking deeply at specifications of i9000, cost me to have an expensive very useless GSM Galaxy, because 3G in my my country is 850MHz.
You can say something about Wifi, but who doesn't hate the obsolete EDGE?
I tried almost everything to mod the Modem or radio frequency and its simple: it is impossible without a hardware modification.
Well, I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8395614#post8395614
And the following:
started obsessing me (you know how you feel when you find a possibility to fix something than you already give up).
Finding the module that says GT-i9000T will fix my issue, and I dont care about warranty ( all my gadgets get warrant void after less than month).
This module should support 850MHz perfectly.
I google that end to end, cnn.cn gsm4world.us and like 3 or 4 more stores searching for the damn module, to replace it in my i9000.
Searched here in all Galaxy sections... nothing found.
But maybe someone else knows a complete store to get this part.
Or maybe someone knows where to find cheap dead phones to just take out the module part for my phone.
Compatibility? Nah... I think thats the only difference between i9000, i9000t and i9000m ("T" and "M" uses the same module)
I just need to flash a 850MHz enabled ROM (like ColdMOD's) and start having fun.
If someone here has a Bell i9000m or a i9000t for parts to offer I'm willing to buy it or just the part.
Or please can someone tell me a good store to search for it.
Thanks in advance.
[Also, if you think that I'm enough stupid and this replacement not gonna work, let me know why]
Cheers
No Ideas....?? Where can I possibly get this part?
this place http://www.globaldirectparts.com/ has a lot of replacement parts for the galaxy, but not the radio - maybe you can email them and ask if they could get one though? or where else to look?
I've been through that... I need to catch 1700/2100, so I thought about the t-mobile vibrant antenna... The thing is you don't just need to change the antenna and the.module, you also need to change.a.duplexor inside.the phone.... + at directparts you need to buy a minimum of 500 antennas and 5 modules... Personnally I gave.up I'll try to trade my phone for an european i9000 or a t-mobile vibrant on a classified ads website

Did you have any luck? I myself have been trying to figure out if i can modify my i9000 which is 900/2100mhz compatible to a i9000t/m which has the 850mhz instead of 900mhz.
After disassembling one which i need to replace the screen in, I've found that the antenna module sits in the rear housing, and makes contact only by the two right hand contacts on the board you have pictured.
I am curious as to weather the 850mhz models utilise the other contact on the left side of the board instead of one of the others and maybe some how this determines the frequency set of the rf module.
Its probably an unlikely solution, but if anyone can direct me to a picture or somewhere that sells antenna modules for the i9000t or i9000m it would be appeciated
thanks
I haven't test below steps myself, but it make sense to fix this issue.
Phone companies make Cell Phones for Europe as well as United States, but for sure, to not waste money in making different Chip Boards that can handle different kind of Frequencies, they just make the Same Identical Phone and just enable or disable some Functions.
In the United States, some carriers, in my case i have a contract with AT&T, use 3G only in the 850Mhz Band, but if you bought your Phone Unlocked and like me it came from Europe, the 850Mhz Band is disabled, so you just have to Enable the 850Mhz Band Frequency in order to be able to pick up the 3G Frequency of you Carrier here in the US.
Here is how you do it:
Open the Phone Screen and Type the following code:
* # * # 1 9 7 3 2 8 6 4 0 # * # *
The phone will automatically take you to a screen called:
SERVICE MODE
AND YOU WILL SEE THESE OPTIONS:
----------------------
[1] DEBUG SCREEN
[2] VERSION INFO
[3] UMTS RF NV
[4] GSM RF NV
[5] AUDIO
[6] COMMON
----------------------
all these options are written very very small so you will have to touch the screen very accurately to get the right one... so select them in the following order:
[1] Debug Screen
+
[8] Phone Control
+
[7] Network Control
+
[2] Band Selection
Once you Tap on "Band Selection" you will have a screen stating these 4 Options:
-------------------------
= BAND SELECTION =
[1] Automatic [*]
[2] WCDMA Band []
[3] GSM Band []
[4] Combi Bands []
-------------------------
The Asterisk ' * ' indicates what option has been chosen, in this case the selection is on "AUTOMATIC" which is correct: the Phone will pick the best Network to work, we just have to make sure that the Phone is searching in all the Possible Networks because by Default some of them are Disabled.
So Tap on:
[2] WCDMA Band []
and on the screen you will see appearing the following Options:
----------------------------------
= WCDMA BAND =
[1] WCDMA ALL []
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I) [*]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II) [*]
[4] WCDMA 900(FDD VIII) [*]
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V) []
-----------------------------------
In my case, since the Telephone comes from Europe, the 850 Band is not enabled and you can tell that by the fact that it doesn't have the ' * ' beside it.
JUST TAP ON
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[]
the phone in about a second will tell you that the Option has been Enabled.
~~~To Go Back DO NOT USE THE "LOOPED ARROW" Button~~~
=== PRESS THE "MENU" BUTTON
and select "BACK" ===
now on the screen you should see the Asterisk beside all the Frequencies, like this:
----------------------------------
= WCDMA BAND =
[1] WCDMA ALL []
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I) [*]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II) [*]
[4] WCDMA 900(FDD VIII) [*]
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V) [*]
----------------------------------
Now, just to make sure that we did everything right, let's press again the "MENU BUTTON" and select again "BACK" so we go back to the
" =BAND SELECTION= " Screen:
-------------------------
= BAND SELECTION =
[1] Automatic [*]
[2] WCDMA Band []
[3] GSM Band []
[4] Combi Bands []
-------------------------
This time, let's choose a different Option:
Tap On:
[4] Combi Bands []
and you will see a screen giving many more Bands Options like this:
----------------------------------
= COMBINATION BANDS =
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900 [*]
[3] DCS 1800 [*]
[4] PCS 1900 [*]
[5] WCDMA 2100(FDD I) [*]
[6] WCDMA 1900(FDD II) [*]
[7] WCDMA 900(FDD VIII) [*]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V) [*]
----------------------------------
Make sure that there is the ' * ' beside the "WCDMA 850 (FDD V)" if you don't see it, Tap on that Option so that it will be enabled.
And then go Back (remember you have to do that with the "MENU BUTTON" and not with the "LOOPED ARROW" Button) and make sure that all the Bands have been enabled.
If all the 8 Different Bands Options have the Asterisk beside it, you have successfully enabled all the 3G Bands available and now you will be able to access the 850Mhz 3G Network Spectrum.
ONCE YOU ARE DONE PRESS THE "MENU" BUTTON AND CHOOSE: " END "
This is it, for me it worked, now i am using my Samsung Galaxy S with AT&T 3G and for now, i didn't have any problem... i don't know if in the future AT&T will "'*****'" about this, but i really hope not.
European Diamonds support WCDMA on 2100 and 900.
But is there any way to use only 900?
I'd like to check if I'm 900mhz covered.
In phone options only alone 2100 or both (9&2.1) can be selected.
And if there is a option to turn off GSM 900 and left only 1800?
Im using a Motorola Droid 4 in Mexico with 4.1. After dialing *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Info> menu button > Select Radio Band im only getting USA band. Then i checked with ##PROGRAM > 06 Test mode ,in "Band" im getting US Cellular (800 mhz). Here in Mexico, Telcel works with 850 Mhz for 3g/UMTS.
My question :¿Is there a way to change bands in this phone? I DO have 3g enabled, dont know if 800/850 Mhz bands are similar, but my signal strenght is always in -90/-100 dBm.
¿How can i select a different band in this smartphone?
