Phone Suddenly Heats up during charging - LG Optimus 4X HD

My phone suddenly started heating up a lot today when I was charging and the screen went black. I couldn't reboot it either. It's never done this before... what's happening?

were you doing anything before or when you was charging (ie playing games)? did you do any flashing or modifications?
Is this heat problem repeatable just by charging your phone?
this could be a hardware issue with the battery.

YES!!!

THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO JUST A WEEK OR TWO AGO!!! Still don't know why though...

Sometimes mine randomly goes quite warm in my pocket, doesn't affect battery though so I don't care, in fact I work in a chilled warehouse so its nice! makes it feel like my phones alive lol
Sent from my rooted P880

No my phone is fine again now... I think I was on the waiting screen for The Simpsons Tapped Out game the entire time.. that could have been why.

It happened to me today without even charging or playing games then it hanged and since yesterday its get really hot while only browsing i thought reboot would solve it but it hanged once in message app, the only recent change is enabling google now

Tilt boots then powers off

This morning my Tilt started doing some odd stuff. It will boot to AT&T splash scree then 3G screen then powers down even if I have it on my dock station. Any ideas. I might reformat.
It also keeps rebooting...

I am having a similar issue tho im not sure its the same. I have a thread about it, my phone battery ran out and now it woult charge. Boots then dies even tho it says the battery is charging. Is it possible it is the same problem?
I think your best option is to perform a hard reset and see if it resolves the issue. If not, then try a different spl.
I have two batteries. The OEM works fine and my phone works as it should. Just recently when I have my replacement battery installed the phone has been acting the same as you are describing. I am convinced that the battery is bad.

idk if your talking about my case or the original posters. But on mine it was working fine and then just randomly it stopped charging. Is there anyway to check if the battery is bad or not.
& shouldnt you be able to boot the phone with just the power cable no battery? i cant....
I think its my battery. One minute it read 80% then dropped to 1%.
Try a contact clean

Might be worth cleaning the battery terminals and (carefully) clean the spring terminals on the phone as well using a cotton bud/q-tip with some contact cleaner or IPA on it. A sudden drop indicates a connection issue which may be due to fingerprint grease. Even a very worn battery will still take a matter of minutes to drop that amount so if it's happening very quickly it's possibly a dodgy connection. At low voltages such as those in the battery, it's especially important that all contacts are perfectly clean and thats not obvious to the eye.

Nope. Most phones won't boot without battery.

Diamond turns off after a while.

Hey.
My diamond is acting strangely. For example, right know it's on but later on today or during the night it will turn off. And each morning I have to take out the battery out for about one minute and then press the power on button to get it to start up. If I don't take the battery out and I press the power on button it doesn't start-up. It just remains off. Sometimes it just gets stuck at the start-up O2 screen. But after a few tries it starts up normally and works.
I don't want to have to do this each morning, like I've been doing for the last several days.. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks.
no but I've been having a similar problem lately, my diamond seems to shut itself off almost right after WM boots. I figured it might be a battery problem because it seemed to happen only when it was running off the battery or right after I disconnected it from the charger so I threw on nuePowerCPL to check battery levels, disabled the backlight power management and it's been up and running for 2 hours straight ... when I exit neuPowerCPL I get a voice command error that says voice command had a problem starting, please re-run the application and the phone freezes. Totally stumped about the powering off though. It may have something to do with the power management, I think it seemed to happen most when the screen tried to shut itself off, not always during that time though. I've reflashed telus(my provider) shipped rom a few times and tried a few other roms, reformatted my internal storage, hard reset etc. Any help would be appreciated if it saves me a few bucks on a battery.
quick bump, i'm completely stumped here. I booted into the latest android image from MrPippy and the phone doesn't restart when it's unplugged like in winmo without the battery monitor running(in winmo my phone will stay on till the battery is completely dead, showing good power levels, only if the battery meter is running, otherwise it restarts within a few minutes regardless of if I'm touching it or not.).
So it works normally with Android?
Then it's seems to be a problem with Windows.. Have you tried flashing another ROM?
Goodluck.
Also, an update on my situation. Thankfully it appears to be working normally now. At least if during the night I turn it off and take out the battery. There hasn't been any unexpected shutdowns since I left the battery out on Sunday night. Tonight I'm going to leave it on, to see if leaving the battery out all night actually helps, or it just is suddenly working properly.

Yeah, I've tried running a few different stock roms, a few off ppcgeeks/everythingdiamond etc, re-flashed spl once or twice, repartitioned/formatted sd card. Even tried leaving my battery out overnight. Was thinking in a frost-free freezer, in a bag of rice tonight ...
):
And how would that help? lol

If there's any moisture in the battery the rice will pull it out and the cold helps arrange the polarity in the battery ... You never used to put dead batteries in the freezer to bring them back to life when you were a kid?
Well, no. I've never heard about that before. >.<

Didn't work anyways. I just read another thread about a hard reset solving this but ... I've gone as far as completely repartitioning my internal storage + hard resets and that hasn't solved it. When I throw a multimeter on my battery the voltage is constant/consistent. At a total loss. As far as I can tell it seems like a blackhole in my battery between 0%-60%. Seems that once the battery drains itself to 60%, it's more like it's drained itself to 0%. When I plug the phone back in after it shuts itself off the battery is always reading 0% NOW, when I started troubleshooting this crap a few weeks ago it would power off any time (battery @ 94%) and I would power it back on to see windows reporting the same battery levels as when it shut off.
Update: I did a format w/mtty a day and a half ago and my phone hasn't restarted since (besides me restarting it, read ahead). The phone seems to be working fine for the most part but it seems the battery readings are never updated, it will sit w/an icon that says 94% in the taskbar all day, when I restart it it jumps down to 59% and stays there all day until another restart. Seems the only time I'm getting a reading from the battery is on first boot. Doesn't restart now though!
Good.
Unfortunately for my Diamond had a blank black screen when I turned the screen on this morning. ): After a couple of soft resets and after flashing another ROM it began working correctly. I'll see if it does the same tomorrow. :/

Which ROM had the problems? Which is the new one?
I have the same problems with EnergyROM (September 20 release). My current guess is WM6.5 not working properly with power controller of Diamond.
Could be. :/ The first time it gave me problems I had a WM 6.5 rom, and this time I had also flashed a WM 6.5 rom.. When it re-began to give me problems it had BOGYSOFTS V6 ROM, I don't know about the first time. Now that you point it out all the times it has given me problems I had a WM 6.5 rom, but maybe it's just coincidence..
Now it's not even turning on. If I press the Power On button and leave in it's pocket after a while it becomes somewhat hot... I don't know what's up. :S
This randomly started happening to me about 4 months ago. I was out at some clubs and whenever i checked my phone it was off! I thought it was a battery issue at first as thats what it seemed like.
I think I just hit the phone on the soft part of my leg pretty hard a few times. I havn't had any issues since.

Xperia Z battery behaving crazy, tough to charge it.

Hi everyone,
Since few days my Xperia Z battery is behaving crazily. It goes up and down. Sometimes when I disconnect the charger, like say at 60 percent, it suddenly goes up or goes down and when I again reconnect the charger it again goes back to 60 percent. Sometimes it doesn't charge only. Sometimes it starts charging, then all of a sudden it stops charging then starts by itself. :/
What's wrong with my device, I don't know. Need help.

Maybe you should try to charge it fully while it's off? Might not do anything but it might help You might just have a damaged/faulty battery.

Well, sometimes batteries just give out and start acting weird. How long have you had the phone? Sometimes as your battery ages, it just starts doing weird thing's. Wouldn't be a problem if we could change the battery

Give out within 7 months? Yeah, wouldn't have been a problem if we could change batteries. But that's the sad part of the story.
I am thinking of switching to Note 3 now. Charges fast, has a bigger battery, stays long. That's exactly what I need.
faster charging kills battery faster
Hi There, this may sound stupid but have you checked the lead/charger, is it an aftermarket one? I have also had similar probs but it was the conections. also try a system wipe and a full charge. and wait for the phone battery to fully flatten then repeat. always charge past 100 percent if you have installed a fresh rom or done a system wipe.

This is true, however sometimes the battery can indicate it is fully charged when it isn't, ( battery stats can be wrong ). I always leave my phone on charge when I sleep and have never had any probs my xperia t is now about 18 months old.
Thanks everyone. I guess I have somehow damaged the battery way too early. I used to use it while charging also. May be the reason of it's present Behaviour.
Right now I am not letting the battery go below 50% and have found out that it stays good, charges, no hiccups
But as soon as the battery goes below fifty it starts behaving too badly, takes time to start charging.

I'm so paranoid about using my phone while it's charging I avoid it as much as possible.
Since you've only had it for 7 month's or so, you should still have the manufactures warranty. You should send it in for service. I had a problem with my old ZL last year, and I ended up getting a new phone.

Fixed screen, at first green light on charge, now not booting and overheating charge

Hi today i got my nexus 6 back, after a smashed screen, i put it on charge and at first i had the green light in the speaker grill, then after a few minutes that light went out and nothing much happened when i tried to turn it on, i left it to charge for a while and when i went to check on the phone, it was getting quite hot (probably as hot as it would on heavy gaming).
Basically i don't know the issue here, im hoping it is a minor thing as at first something did happen, then the overheating with nothing happening. Do you reckon this is done for, or it is saveable?
Thanks

Personally, I'd return it because they messed something up during the repair.
I reckon so. Because i opened it up myself and a bit later on after i had a fiddle, i was able to boot it and get off photos, so clearly the only issue here is the screen. But now the screen at least looks fixed, the rest doesn't seem to want to do much.

MI 9 Heating Issue

Now the phone is dead.
chronology is,
i charged my phone while turned off because i think this heating issue is because of its software. i didn't let it fully charge because i touched my phone and it was very hot. so i turned the phone on to see the temp. it reached 70C (attachment below).
So i manage to unplug and turn off the phone. Look at the screenshot, its 30% battery right? Well i turned off the phone and put the phone on the floor to make it cool. After that i put the phone in my desk. i was curious so i touch my phone again and it still heating while turned off. i woke up at morning and check the phone, now its cold but the battery drained. So i guess the cpu maybe still running at high clock even tho i turned it off. So i tried to charge the phone, but there is no sign of life, no led notification, i tried 20s power button w and w/o vol button too.
I have no idea, i think i got a new broken device, because when i unbox it, the phone was out of battery (my first time unboxing with uncharged battery lol)
Sad to heart that...
I think you bought a faulty device. From heating up,the processor died.Contact the seller.

It can be a battery issue ... it's better for you to not use your device until you see a xiaomi customer shop. Your device can explode at any time ... It's a serious problem !!!
