HTC One root that really works - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey everyone !!
firstly, apologies if this should be somewhere else or if ive repeated someone else's problem.
hope you can help. ive got an HTC One and im trying to root it because i want to install a custom rom. ive tried lots and lots of ways including rom manager, superuser, fastboot, superboot. TWRP, CWM and your all in one toolkit but everything fails.. i was wondering if i have a problem with the internal storage. i tried to transfer a jpeg to the phone using HTC sync manager. i left it to transfer and went to work. 8 hours later the progress bar hadnt moved. i tried to transfer a boot image and it keeps timing out. rom manager comes back with errors when i do anything. for example if i try to go into fix permissions i get "an error occured while attempting to run privileged commands" im beginning to think that rooting this mobile is an impossibility. please help !!!

You won't have S-Off unless you have it unlocked from the get go, ie a developers phone.
All you need to do is follow everything from this thread and youre good to go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2182792&highlight=how+to+root
The whole process should take about half an hour max as if you haven't made an account with HTC dev unlock then you will have to, they will send you a key once you send them the read out from your phone.
It's a really easy procedure to be honest.

hey dude
as i said the bootloader is already unlocked so i dont have to do all that again. the method u suggest is one of the many i already tried and it didnt work. its info is all wrong. it keeps referring to the SD card. The HTC one doesnt come with an SD card ??? it has internal storage.

Don't forget to erase cache after you flashed your recovery, this can cause many problems.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
If you don't erase cache, this could be your problem.
Possible solution :
Did you try this method? Don't use any All-in-One tool to do this, do take the time to do this manually via an SDK/ADB command window (see my signature if it is not installed on your computer)
Download the boot.img HERE made by Paul O'Brien and the CWM recovery by Flyhalf205 HERE place both files in your platform-tools of your SDK folder.
Reboot into Bootloader mode
Plug your USB cable and make certain that FASTBOOT USB is highligted
At the prompt type>fastboot flash boot boot.img
Success message
Again at the prompt type>fastboot erase cache
Success message
At the prompt type>fastboot reboot-bootloader
Your phone will reboot in Bootloader mode
At the prompt type>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Success message
Againt at the prompt type>fastboot erase cache
Success message
At the prompt type>fastboot reboot
Once rebooted check if you have the Superuser application in the app Drawer

Did you manage to get recovery installed ok?

[solved] Bricked? How to remove CWM ?

"I checked everywhere and I can't fine it. How to remove this horrible CWM ? Anything . I need anything! I tried to install 4EXT when CWM was still on and phone now seems to be bricked. It doesn't want to boot into the system or recovery. It just hangs on HTC white boot logo. Please help."
This should have been posted in the General section, not the Development section.
If you can boot the phone into HBOOT, then you can flash a new recovery image in FASTBOOT USB mode.
If you have more questions post in the GENERAL section after you have searched.
- Problem is, that when I try to flash anything it's loading it (I can see green uploading animation in HTC) but it isn't writing it (I can see quick red uploading animation) and nothing happens afterwards...
Could you recommend particular recovery image please ? I'm very tight on time.
hey ive had this happen to me before when i first started. the way i solved my problem was boot into fastboot and run the ruu it will restore everything to stock then run revolutionary to get s-off and flash cwm. then download 4ext recovery and in the app u can flash it straight over the top of cwm
heres the link to find your ruu

This will not work. This is how the OP just into the situation he is in. The RUU will not successfully install because he has the Revolutionary S-OFF HBOOT on his phone and the RUU is not able to overwrite with the HBOOT from the RUU.

I tried your RUU yesterday late night but it won't work. Only way I know to do it is to rename it to PG32IMG.zip and have it autoloaded by unlit. But it let's loaded (green loading animation) and than red loading animation which finishes but dissent make any changes I will try to find stock Rom (stock recovery?) With exe and try to flash it from console via windows. I would be happy if you could advise which file to flash as I travel and can access only wiz gprs on other phone which cost me dear and I can't really see anything I wouldn't mind to also format everything including memory where cwm or 4ext sits if its possible. I'm sorry to ask for that but will appreciate links if someone done it before due to those restrictions of searching through roaming oon company phone. Thanks guys.

When I connect this incredible s by USB and i go to fastboot it changes to fastboot usb. so it sees the phone. but windows system doesnt see it. when i run from console "adb" and "adb devices" it says nothing is nonnected. when I got RUU with .exe extension it tells me there is connection error 260 and I can't go beyond.
Does anyone have any ideas please ?

Have you installed the HTC drivers on your PC? If you have installed HTC Sync to get the HTC drivers installed, make sure that HTC Sync is not running in the background or System Tray.
Penguins method actually works, though he hasnt given in much detail. I know whats he saying exactly.

I had it enabled as well as fastboot disabled but now i don't even have a system. all i can do is to power into hboot. i cant get into recovery (that's where cwm and 4ext was sitting and it hangs everytime i try to access) nothing else. i had separate drivers for htc but i have installed and updated htc sync. will kill it everytime tries to run. i still cant get over this connection problem. RUU advised above have broken or payable links. the one i tried to install is from here: http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...igned_Raphael_52.58.25.30_1.11.25.01_Ship.exe
could someone be so kind and actually send me a link to the file that i need to insstall to finally got it moving?
i am at the moment so confused by searching thought topics i completely lost my point. please - be so kind and direct me to some downloadable link and to whatever i need to flash...
on another note - can I wipe everything somehow and than install from scratch ? (by everything i mean also the place where CWM is istting)

If that is the RUU you tried to install, no wonder you are having issues. That RUU is not for the IncS, so it is a wonder you can still even get into HBOOT.
Try this one:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/c0a...5AU_3805.06.03.03_M_release_199308_signed.exe
The problem seems to be coming from inability to connect/recognise my device in first place. I will try this suggested Rom today and let you know in few hours.
Logically thinking - what could go wrong with this phone ? I had CWM which I wanted to remove. I couldn't so I tried to install 4ext to overwrite it when I lost hope. this didn't work. Than I tried some "stock Rom" which came out to be dodgy and I'm in situation now. It's S-ON phone and all I can do is to get to hboot. But I am still cautious about this connercition error 260. I hope its because of wrong file I tried to use previously... But.... I will troy files suggested here. If that won't work - what will be next step ? Could I let's say try to download gingerbread and install it from .exe ? Would that fix it ?

How did you try to open it?
Copy it to your SD card and rename it PG32IMG.zip and the reboot into HBOOT and it should ask you to Update.

I tried to open zip to see what's inside. It didn't want to open zip file. I tried few times before to rename it to P32IMG and upload like that. My hboot detects it, loads it but nothing happens afterwards. I will try like that if the file is not corrupted. Did anyone checked it personally ? (this particular file)

phone softbricked, unflashable, cannot use fastboot or adb, even more issues.

so i need some serious advice. i had my phone rooted, and i screwed up and while attempting to fix the tiny storage size bug (it was 2 AM), i formatted EVERYTHING because i somehow managed to forget what the word 'format' means. so now; it is softbricked, the sdcard has no rom files on it to be flashed, i cant mount it anyway, i get an error saying 'missing UMS lunfile' when i try to mount the usb, adb wont detect my phone, fastboot just sits there, the RUU says it cant find any devices, i cant lock my phone's bootloader either. . my hboot is 1.28, i was using a custom version of ICS, and it was bought in australia a few days before the update. i rooted while running ICS.

okay, update :L
i still cannot use adb. i have howerver managed to get fastbot working, so i tried to flash a rom; no luck. so i locked my phone and ran the RUU. no stupid error message this time, because this time it was retarded: WRONG RUU VERSION, PLEASE USE THE CORRECT UTILITY.
see, im in australia, and there are only 2 ruu for the land down under. this is the second one ive tried, after th first one GAVE ME THE SAME ERROR
soi have some questions:
1) is it possible i have a european or otherwise overseas model?
2) this one is badly worded and confusing, so bear with me:
i dont have clockworkmod on account of locking again, but i think the inabilty to flash the phone may come from the inability to contact the sdcard. is there a command in fastboot that would set the partitions back up from scratch? if i can do that, i could then flash the adb drivers back on my phone, then use adb push to force the damn rom.zip onto my strorage then use clockworkmod to flash the rom? (all my grammar are belong to hulk)
i need a speedy reply as ive got my boss breathing down my neck about this (if i dont fix it they cant contact me if im not in the office or home)

Well, i don't really understand a thing, why people don't use recovery + S-OFF.
The best way to ensure your device works as it should and avoid future problems, is to have a custom recovery, and S-OFF, this avoids soft-bricking, and i never really understanded soft-brick term as long as you have fastboot...
You can always unlock your bootloader, and flash a recovery again, use XL Multi Tool.
Flash a recovery, flash a ROM, flash S-OFF, flash a new RUU, and as far as i know you don't need ro lock bootloader in order to flash a new RUU if you are S-OFF, so try it like this
Hope this helps

[Q] HTC One Bricked (bootloop)

Hello folks,
During update from Revolution HD 3.4 to 3.5 something went wrong and process stopped before it got finished. Now I ended up in bootloop, even recovery is not working. I've tried to use RUU but failed on CID verification as I'm having the phone from 3 IE. Is any chance to bring it back to life or i just got very expensive paper weight ?
Or if anyone can provide RUU for 3 IE I'm willing to pay for it.
Bad day, bad day...
Thank you for any advice.

What I have done.
1.) Unlocked, re-locked bootloader.. (i think this did the trick, full wipe ?)
2.) Wiped cache
3.) Re-flash clockworkmod
4.) Upload ROM using sideload.
Now the phone is back. I hope i will not break something again.
Hi, I am having the same issue with my phone as of right now. I tried re-locking bootloader and then unlocking again and also reflashing clockwork and I am still getting the bootloop and cannot access recovery (flashes for 0.1 secs and then disappears).

Hi Riyal,
I have fixed that issue with fastboot erase cache. Now, I am having a problem loading a ROM because it states in recovery that it "can't mount SD card"?
Figured it out, I just had to ADB push a stock rom and then re-wipe/re-flash

My HTC One device is actually suffering the same problem.
I bought my HTC One Sprint(Sim-Free Edition) in the US and got it to India.
But after I inserted my Indian Sim it said ''SIM LOCK ENABLED''.....I just got frustrated and
rooted the device and tried to install ''Android RevolutionHD (Odexed)'' Stock ROM with the help of TWRP.
But after I installed the stock rom, my device is just showing the HTC symbol and hanging there itself.
It Hangs there for around 6-7mins and reboots and the same happens again.
The only thing I can do is to get in to the bootloader and Power OFF the Device.
Any Help???? Please..... just having a costly paper weight since 2 weeks.
Please need help urgently....!!!

Reboot and your done

i was going through the same thing yesterday and i thought i had bricked my phone. what i did that finally worked, was unplugging the usb, restarting the computer, reinstalling htc drivers, then restarting the computer, then using a different usb port. i was finally able to sideload ARHD whereas before i could do fastboot commands, but it wasn't responding to the sideload, and wasn't able to mount the sdcard, so i thought i was screwed. :good:

Thanks for the tip, I was able to get back into AROMA but the original issue that got me to this point came up again. Aroma installer runs and during the install it kicks itself out and sends me back to recovery, so the installer doesn't complete. It gets to about 30% and craps out just after it writes system data and starts to install the .apk's. Screen goes black and it reboots itself and sends me to recovery.
thoughts?

[Q] HTC one bricked? stuck on HTC logo

Hi I was rooting my HTC one and was able to do so successfully. Then I tried to flash roms and it didn't work with TWRP so I tried clockwork. That's when everything went to hell. I was stuck in the bootloader loop and it just kept booting to that. Then I tried to follow this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258809
and I did method 1 but when I ran one of the commands I saw failed. Now my HTC One is just stuck on the screen with a silver HTC logo and I can't even turn it off. I would really appreciate any insights and advice. I tried doing it on my own but clearly I kept ****ing up and could really use some help.

This is a softbrick not a (hard)brick. this is fixable. Try putting it under a bright light and holding down pwr + vol dwn (dont ask just do it) and see if the soft buttons start blinking. if so, you should feel a buzz when it reboots, and then keep holding down vol dwn and that should put you into bootloader. from there you can get to fastboot (and maybe even recovery)

I've got to ask. A bright light? Is he doing surgery as well? What's the reason for the light?

for some reason multiple people have reported successful reboots under bright light in which previously (sometimes within minutes) earlier would not work in a dark environment. i have no idea why it works, but ive heard it work enough times, its worth adding it in.

It's thought this is a safety feature so that you can't accidentally long press power and restart in dark places like your pocket.
@rider5512 Sounds right to me. Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks Toxic!!- so I tried that and I'm back in the bootloader now! I guess the bright light made a difference as I messed up my phone last night. It didn't buzz but now I'm back in the bootloader. How should I go about fixing this now that I can access the bootloader and recovery? I really don't want to half ass this again lol.
It also says "TAMPERED" "RELOCKED" on the top as well.
I'm thinking of following the instructions for method 2 from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258809
Would this be correct or do I need to do anything else first?

Method 2 looks good.
Just remember that you will have to unlock your bootloader again. You will probably have to request a new token at htcdev.
Then flash recovery from toolkit and sideload and install new rom.

Great I'm just concerned at getting this to work again.
EDIT - So I am trying method 2 right now - I am trying to boot into recovery but it just brings me back to bootloader. I cannot access recovery so when I try sideloading the rom it doesn't work. It says "error device not found" in cmd prompt but I already installed the HTC drivers though. Any advice?
So that means I have to go through the whole process of unlocking the bootloader and rooting it. So can I just use this tool by Hasoon2000 instead of going through manually typing in cmd prompts in the future?
In regards to requesting the new token, can you clarify? Are you saying that since I activated the old token, it cannot be activated anymore and I need to contact HTC Dev directly?

You need to flash a new custom recovery again before you can boot into it and sideload. You won't be able to do that until you unlock your bootloader again.
You do have to do the whole process of unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom recovery from the toolkit.
You will need to get a new unlock token from htcdev (however you did it before, manually or with the toolkit) since you can only use the unlock token's once it seems. No biggie, just need to do the process again to get that new token you will need to unlock you bootloader before you will be able to do anything in recovery.

Thank you crushalot!
So I am following this guide.
http://htconeroot.com/htc-one-root/how-to-root-htc-one-windowsmaclinux/
I successfully unlocked the bootloader and now I need to flash the recovery. In Step 23, he copies the file "CWM-SuperSU-v1.30.zip" into the internal storage. Since I cannot access the internal storage of the phone, is this step necessary to flashing recovery? Can I just skip over to step 24 and run "fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.0.0-m7.img" ?
Edit - Okay so I used Hasoon's toolkit to flash the recovery and I think it worked. However, now I am trying to sideload the rom and having issues. I selected "ADB Sideload a ROM" and i manually went into recovery and TWRP (the toolkit can't send it into recovery for some reason). I selected "sideload a rom" on the HTC and then it shows you a bar that says "Swipe to sideload". I wasn't sure if I needed to do that or not but I tried running the toolkit and sideloading the rom and i got "error: closed" in command prompt.
in TWRP there are messages saying "unable to mount /data, recreate data/media folder, internal storage etc".

That is done in order to give root access to the currently installed rom. You are going to install a new rom, so you don't have to do that until you get the rom installed.
You are now the 3rd user I have run into that is having the issue where you can't mount anything in recovery and I'm not sure why. Some users report that re locking and unlocking the bootloader fixes this, but you just did that, so I'm not sure why this is happening.
Within the toolkit try the perm root option? Perhaps there is something I can't think of since I rooted mine, the day I got it awhile back.
"Rooting The Device To root your device, first make sure you have unlocked the bootloader and installed a custom recovery. Next, select the ‘Perm Root’ option (the last one) from the Extras section and follow the instructions to get root access in no time."
To any other advanced users who may be able to answer this:
Does the recovery need the installed rom to have the SU binaries before it can mount the system in recovery? Does recovery need to be granted SU though some other means before mounting?

Okay I just tried Perm room - nothing happened except it showed 776 KB/s. I remember a few days ago there was a system update from HTC and I updated it OTA - would that affect this at all?
Just to be clear, I run the program, go into recovery, go into adb sideload, then I select the rom on the PC. Then I swipe across the bar to mount the rom and then it fails to mount and I get "error closed" in command prompt.
I know it is a pain in the ass, and users not familiar with adb/fastboot commands and using the toolkit mess it up.
Flashing recovery in fastboot after you pointed to your adb/fastboot folder you need to do:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery name-of-your-recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
As you got it flashed successfully but you have problems sideliadung it with adb, get yourself a OTG cable and a USB storage stick, put the custom ROM.zip on there and then choose 'flash .zip from external storage' or s.thing like that. I don't know if that option is available in TWRP but it is in ClockworkMod.
Once you have booted successfully up into the ROM, go back into recovery and do a Nandroid back up, and keep it on that stick and on the internal storage if your One!
Good luck

Hmm so can I use the toolkit to do this? I don't have the actual recoveries of TWRP and CWM. If I have TWRP on this installed, can I flash Clockwork as well or do you have to choose one or the other?
I just want to clarify - are you saying that I should be doing this manually instead of using the toolkit to install CWM or TWRP? When I use the toolkit, does it erase the cache?
Btw, when I plug in my phone, it detects it as an F drive but I cannot access the actual internal storage. What does this mean? I have the drivers installed already.

Yes, every user that I encountered with this issue had done an OTA update. Not exactly sure why or how that is causing these issues.
Yes, your procedure for sideload is correct, however you are unable to flash anything or use recovery at all because when in recovery the internal storage won't mount, so it can't perform any actions.
Need to do some more reading for: unable to mount in recovery

I don't think the toolkit is the issue. The cache erase can also be done from the toolkit with the Erase Cache in the Commands section. Never hurts to try this, but the issue is not being able to mount storage in recovery. I think you could install either recovery and it wouldn't matter as they would both have the same issue. Generally, I prefer TWRP anyway.
You can't access the phones internal storage when connected via USB when the phone is in recovery or fastboot. So that is normal.

Hmmm okay so the other poster's suggestion was to get an OTG cable (a micro usb to USB cable right?) and connect the USB with the ROM directly the phone. Do you think this would be a big difference or no? I just don't know if the issue is the internal storage itself or the mode of pushing the ROM.
Otherwise, I'm pretty much scratching my head and have no idea what else I could do =/.
Just for anyone else who's having issues, I've tried using TWRP's install function with the OTG cable but it still doesn't mount. Just letting people know.
if you are noob to recover your phone you can try some services like this

[Q] HTC One (M7) Bricked???

Hello. I have the following problem. I friend of mine that I've sold him my old rooted Htc One tried to make 4.4. kitkat
He tried to install
Android_Revolution_HD-One-53.0zip
BUT I don't know how he managed to stuck his phone. The problem is when I am power on the phone it shows the white HTC screen with the red letters "this build is for development purpose only..." after a while reboots in TWRP v2.5.0.0
And that's it , I cannot do anything because my PC won't recognize it via USB cable.
Any suggestions?
(excuse me for my English, with love from Greece )
As long as it boots into Recovery its not bricked. Do you have the HTC Driver installed on your computer?
Android Revolution HD 53 requires min. TWRP 2.6.3.3. Your version is too old.

From recovery go to fastboot connect phone to pc.
It must be recognized.
Then flash boot.img which is in the Revolution.zip.
Then install the rom via recovery.
Remember for unlock and not s-off users the boot.img must be flashed befor flashing a rom.zip.

SAME problem (or pretty similar) here, trying to instal ARHD61.1... I don't know how did I screw up this so much...
My bootloader is TAMPERED, UNLOCKED, S-On. Recovery TRWP (2.7) launches but... many things don't work.
First thing I have to mention is that I didn't forget to enable debugging before all this started (and now I can't launch android to do it).
My HTC drivers should be up-to-date, as I installed yesterday HTC sync 3.00.52...
In bootloader, if I type "fastboot devices" I get "FA34HW903605 fastboot", and "fastboot reboot.bootloader" does what it is expected to do...
In recovery, "adb push" tells me "error: device not found".
Can someone help me? If you need more details, just ask. Thanks

Let me try and I'll tell you later. I also think it's a matter of drivers, so I was downloading and re-installing it... Thank you for your help
-------------------------------------------------- UPDATE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I followed your steps (LET ME THANK YOU FOR MAKING THAT GUIDE) and now the device is "My HTC" as you show.
Something has changed:
If I type "adb devices" (in PC) when phone is in fastboot, the listing is void (before I got "FA34HW903605 fastboot"), and if I do the same while phone is in recovery, I get the mentioned "FA34HW903605 recovery".
In Windows7 I don't see "My HTC" as a conventional USB storage or Memory of a Camera (should it be?)
I've managed to ADB PUSH a ROM (ARHD) in recovery, but now I get an error message: "Unable to mount '/data' " and "Unable to mount internal storage " then FAILED. Now I'll try flashing a new recovery...
WOW WOW WOW!! It was enough for me, sir
1st) Solve comunnication issues as shown in FAQ #2 here
2nd) Solve TWRP recovery mount issues by:
2.a) Installing any other (clockwork) in fastboot using One All In One Kit (eaaaasy)
2.b) Formatting cache, system, data partitions
2.c) Installing TWRP again using One All In One Kit (Android Revolution REQUIRES this recovery)
2.d) Sending the ROM ('adb push your_rom.zip /sdcard/wherever_you_want_it')
2.e) Installing it from TWRP recovery.
An that was all. THANKS A LOT nkk71; without your help I still would be here trying to figure out what's broken... Thanks.

no problem, glad to be of help
remember for most 4.4 ROMs, (for m7_u/ul) TWRP 2.6.3.3 (or higher) is recommended at the moment.
though you should be good by downloading it, then checking MD5 to make sure the download isnt corrupt (that site doesnt work with download managers), then:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
-> enter recovery and push the rom

It wont be so easy, I'm afraid. Even if comunication issues are solved, you won't be able to copy your ROM using windows file manager, opening the phone like a conventional drive...
You have to install "ADB" in your PC (search in HTC ONE subforums, there's a lot of info about ADB pusing (=copying) ROMS) and use it to copy your ROM. One advice: while "pushing" the ROM, be patient: it takes a long time. When your ROM is "pushed", just install it in recovery and... that's it!!
I think here you have a good starting point.
