[Q] [ASKING] how to make a custom rom. - Samsung Galaxy Exhibit 4G

Hello guys, I've been researching creating a custom rom. I've used several methods, but alot of them arent working for this device. The latest one I used is Nero Yong's [Here], but it didnt work. I tried installing the .zip file to my phone, but it just returns to the cwm screen, without installing the rom. I have a .zip file of it I can upload, if necessary. Is there a newer, or better way to create a rom, on this device, Its possible the methods i've been trying arent compatible with the Galaxy Exhibit.
Thanks
Also: Please do not tell me to "use the search", or "there is plenty of tutorials on how to make a rom." or any other insulting and unwanted comments. I understand there are other guides, but as i've said, I'm having trouble. Thanks

[Q] Suggestions for rooting & installing rom

i'm sure this is somehow answered and i have searched and read about installing different roms, flashing, etc. but i'm wondering what would be the easiest route to installing a new rom.
my captivate is currently on 2.1 and rooted, with ext tools and ryan's oclf installed. should i just use odin and bring the whole thing back to stock and "start over"...do i need to uninstall the oclf & ext tools then just flash a rom...or is there another method that would be better.
i'm hoping to try out some cognition or cyanogen roms that bring the phone up to 2.2 or 2.3
any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance for any feedback

Before you do flash any custom ROMS, please make sure you read thoroughly the instructions on how to do the flash and follow them completely. Make sure you understand those instructions before you flash. If you don't, then ask. Better to do the homework up front before you make any changes or you will probably mess something up and possibly brick your phone. Believe me, I learned that lesson the hard way.
Good luck!!
Read up on everything beforehand. Updating to OEM 2.2 before trying a custom ROM will cause 3e verification errors. Flashing a Gingerbread ROM will cause bootloader issues if you decide to go back a to a 2.2 based ROM. GB ROMs are also very specific as far as installation steps. Know what you're doing and plan to do before you do it. It isn't hard until you brick your phone.
thanks for the replies and the link. i'm not afraid of reading, so i plan on making sure i understand what's involved before making any changes. if i have any questions, you can be sure i'll ask...
in the link rselvaggio provided, the download link to odin doesn't work...can i use any version of odin or was there something more included with that link?
nevermind, i backed into the url and that same file was in a different folder:
thevod.org/misc/temp_captivate/I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.rar
As Miami_Son said, read through the different rom threads and also watch the videos that are posted.
Learn to flash 2.2 or 2.2.1 roms through Clockworkmod first.
Good luck and happy flashing.

[Q] how to flash a custom rom (zip) ?

sorry i searched a lot but couldn' find help as info is sprayed out.
I want to flash a custom rom (zip). my device is rooted, have Odin mobile.
what to save/backup and how ?
what to wipe ? how to ?
then how to flash the rom ?
thx a lot, i'm a big noob on android, i'm from IOS
I am also a newcomer to custom ROMS and would like to try an alternative ROM/Kernel - but I would like to be able to do a complete backup so I could restore the phone to how it is at the moment - just in case!
I am now very confused as I don't really understand what the difference is between a ROM and a Kernel. Some posts say don't use ODIN whilst posts like the previous one seem to be using it. I have also read concerns about "Radio" versions and concerns about the "flash counter". I thought Nandroid was for backup/restore so what is the difference between it and CWM? What is "Busybox" and why do many posts mention it?
Multiple ROMS/Kernels seem to appear everyday and when I try to find a guide for Noobs like myself, they seem to have been posted some time ago and later events and software make me doubt that I could restore if I wanted to.
If I understand correctly, I could do a simple ROOT and then install CWM (ClockWorkMod) to make a complete backup - but I don't know if that is correct.
Then I read about critical memory areas that could be corrupted that contain encrypted phone data unique to my phone (IMEI number etc.) and that by rooting I could brick my phone!
It seems a shame that expert devs are doing things that some of us Noobs would like to try but they seem to forget that some of us are at the start of a steep learning curve when it comes to rooting and installing custom roms or Kernels.
Is there an up to date step by step guide for Noobs like me that explains things in simple language?
UPDATE Well I took the plunge after reading the AndroidNZ guide at http://www.androidnz.net/2011/11/at-your-own-risk-video-guide-for-new.html and the Chainfire thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19030747#post19030747 I have now rooted my Note, made a backup and installed the Titanium Backup app (pro) from the market. Hopefully all is now backed up for experimentation!

I'm a newbie at this area too. However, through some tough adaptation to this "expert" environment, my note is running custom ROM with custom kernel now. It's been tough, but it was fun

[Q] installation confusions

i've searched for days on trying to understand how to root the Vivid and still not sure if i've done it correctly.
devices i've rooted or think i've rooted b/c i installed custom ROMs:
- htc aria
- htc inspire
this is something completely different.
none of the threads seem to be clear and concise giving step by step instructions for installing custom ROMs. many abbreviations and skipped steps. i will attempt to be very detailed in what i've done thus far. i understand even the slightest detail is important when having inquiries on forums.
when attempting to root, used Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2
this assisted in unlocking boothloader (this term is still hazey to me)
now i'm thinking... because the bootloader is unlocked, i can get into recovery, which i can. for some reason, had a problem with completing step 6, so i dont know if i'm 'permanently' rooted or not.
with aria and inspire, i used this recovery section to install (note: is install and flash used interchangeably?) custom ROMs. however, i didnt manipulate any 'kernels' to do so (unless it was autoManipulated in the installation of the ROM. now this kernel thing is the reason why i'm writing this post.
i'm attempting to install holiraider_final_4g.zip (hasnt finished downloading yet).
this thread: [ROM][03/06/2012] HoliRaider FINAL - Sense 3.5 /APM/Beats/DSPAudio/Amaze/Bravia, gives files, but no instructs.
so my questions are
- if the bootloader is unlocked, and i can access recovery menu, am i rooted?
- is install and flash used interchangeably?
- to use the holiRaider ROM, must i install/flash the kernel shown in thread?
- if kernel is needed, when is it installed/flashed (in reference to the steps in installing/flashing ROM, ie: install ROM first, then kernel or vice-versa)?
- in lamens (noob, for dummies, etc) terms, what is CRT on/off?
- when is 'RestoreCRT_Animationfor_final.zip' installed/flashed (step by step)?
if more info is needed i'll be glad to give it.
also, i've read the 'everyone needs to read this' thread. dont know what happened, but i have no intention of disrespecting anyone who's assisting me.
thanks for any help.
I imagine someone will help more but to answer some of your questions:
You have to flash the kernel for the rom to run correctly or else you will boot loop.
The kernel is flashed first using a command prompt with your phone hooked up to the computer.
To check if you have root you should use titanium backup or another app that requires root. Just getting into cwm is not enough I don't believe.
I believe crt is an animation, either way not crucial for the rom.
Also, read this post for help with flashing the kernel/rom. Slapshot did a great guide.
Hope I helped somewhat.
i've installed titanium backup, it states i'm not rooted.
so now... that's the first thing i need to do before installing anything.
i've unlocked the bootloader and can access recovery menu. how do i go about permanently rooting vivid. the Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2 doesnt root my phone when using the 'permRoot' button.
any assistance is greatly appreciated.
is there a link to that thread of installing/flashing kernel by slapshot. i will need the information prior to installing/flashing the holiRaid ROM.
also, i remember going to chat room or something of the sort (mIRC i think) and got assistance w/ rooting my htc inspire by attn1. this guy was fantastic. is there anything like that for the htc vivid? he remotely took over my computer and rooted my inspire. it was beautiful.
basically i want bloatware gone. i also want to be able to move every app that has the option to move to SD to move to the SD (adobe flash player, nfs shift, adobe reader, etc...).

[Q] Help about android

Hello everyone, how are you? I am a newbie here and I use a galaxy s. For the first time I upgraded my rom from froyo to gingerbread. But still I have to know so many things about android roms, kernels and other basic things e.g. about changing roms, rooting, unrooting, backups etc. I have also some questions such as, what rom actually is? what is kernels and how do they work? How does android actually works? In a sentence, I want to know everything so that changing a rom or kernel will be a matter of time for me and following the procedures written in this forum will be very easy for me.
I know there are some very talented person here. If anyone of you please help me to go through this tutorial process, specially if you give me some materials regarding on this, that will be very much helpful for me and other guys like myself. Thanks in advance.

Let me try to help you even for a bit..
1) ROM is phones firmware like stock ROM are firmwares that are provided by samsung and custom ROMs are made by community and they are mostly android 4.0/4.1 vs 2.3 stock
2)kernel is heart of android OS it loads essential files during bootup to make android boot. (it is certain for device/android version)since you are a newbie dont get into kernels that much
3) "how android actually works?" well thats a bit hard to explain... Android runs on linux kernel its a set of framework files that run system apps from /system/app as i know (i may be wrong)
4) changing ROMs is quite easy:
first you have to root your device with a rooted kernel (since you on stock gingerbread) search a kernel for your firmware (you may use CF-root)
second is you have to have ClockWorkMod (CWM) revocery installed so you can flash custom ROMs (usualy you get it with CF-root kernel)
To flash a rom you should:
-Download it on your SD card (preferably internal one)
-reboot into recovery mode (Power off your device, after COMPLETE powerdown hold POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME(middle) keys and wait untill "Galaxy S I9000" pops up
-do (navigate with volume up\down keys and select by middle key)"Wipe data\factory reset" then do "Wipe cache partition" after that go to "Anvanced" and select "wipe dalvik cache" after that return to main menu (***GO back*** button at bottom) and go to "Install zip from SD card" > "Choose zip from SDcard" and pick your file and finally after that reboot and your rom flashed (WARNING flashing a rom wipes all your data)
-
-I just told you how you do it, but since you`re a newbie i recomend you learn more about all that stuff and only after that give it a try. I hope ive been some help, if you want anything else, ask here or PM me. Take care!

Xposed framework without custom recovery

Hi,
A couple of questions about this. Firstly is xposed framework safe to use on the Xperia e4? The warning message about bricking nerved me out a little bit as I can't find info about running it on this phone online.
Also, does anyone know if there is a custom recovery for the e4? Obviously I need to be able to make and recover a nandroid to use xposed safely. I did find one thing on google, but with there only being one mention of it and it not being on xda I'm not sure I trust it. Unfortunately theres not a lot of info available here about this particular phone as we don't have our own subforum.
Thanks
Edit: a lot of my initial questions have been answered, but I still need help, please see post 3
I found people here that are having luck running xposed on the e4 so that's great news, but looks like I am out of luck on custom recovery, so I'm excited to try xposed, but nervous about not being able to do a nandroid first.
I have changed thread title as any phone specific questions I had have been cleared up. But now really wanting to know what other people without custom recoveries have done. As without one I can't create or restore nandroid, or use the disabler zip. What have other people without custom recoveries done to make the process safer?
