nfc is on but unresponsive - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says nfc is on but dont seem to work? I have tried another phone to check to see if it was my ONE and the pair passed data fine.
Please if any one has an idea on what im doing wrong im willing to listen?
Reading the reviews linked here i see a lot of bias against this handset/ shame really as most of them either havent used a ONE or are talking out their arse.
The phone experience with the exception of this issue has had only one other issue the back button does not respond i have read about it here and wait to see what happens?
The overall experience has been very positive in my opinion?

Yes. Also, the NFC works only when the device is on and unlocked.

Means not on lock screen. So screen on and sense home screen on display.

Tried everything, thanks for the responses, but seems like after a factory reset all is well?

Mine doesn't work either. When I turn on my NFC, I don't even see that "N" logo on my menu bar like in this pic

Mine don't show that icon either but the NFC works now?

I have found that the NFC on the HTC one is not as responsive as other phones, (probably due to metal back).
I have found that this causes issues with certain NFC devices do not work.
so far it have found it works ok when using nfc to use android beam to another device BUT it is unable to read certain NFC devices, in Hong Kong we have Octopus nfc cards for public transport, they even released an app so you can check the balance on the card. I have tested and Xperia Z and Nexus 4 can read my card ok, but the HTC One cannot read the card, i can feel the small vibrations on the htc which shows it starts to detect the card but never manages to properly read it.

Adding ffc to nexus one, suggestions?

Well I have some extra time and money on my hands, and I was wondering if this would be possible in any way? If I got the same exact camera for the nexus one, is there any room or any way I could add it in? I was thinking of cramming it in there, and having both cameras connected to a switch/button I could have coming out the top of the phone? So I could make it where if the switch/button is pressed it would change which camera being used. I've looked at teardowns and I can't tell if this would be possible or not, nor do I even know if its technically possible or not because I don't know if the camera connections could be set up this way. Anyone tried this before?/Suggestions?/Discussion?

hi
i dont know how to help you but i am very sure, that there was a hardware mod where someone added a front facing camera to a phone that didn`t have one.
i think it was even featured on the xda frontpage and it might have been a samsung phone.
you might wanna look that one up and maybe it helps you
good luck with your Project!
Yeah, I remember seeing that on Engadget, it was a Galaxy S variant if I remember correctly.

Yeah I looked into that a little but this is a little bit of a different situation, considering those phones had an actual slot available for a ffc.

I could easily go without that lol but I guess I'm wondering more about being able to attach two nexus one cameras to a switch, what parts would I use and is it possible? I don't know anything about that

Battery and NFC

My first two days with the nexus 7 were amazing, but the battery wasn't that good as Google said.
Looking at the processes, there was a Wallet app that I did not used, that was draining the battery.
In settings - wireless & networks - more, I disconnect the NFC tick, and now the battery really works great.
I hope this helps someone.

Thanks for your tip, I will see how battery life is now

This seems to be a bug with Google Wallet on the Nexus 7. NFC itself uses very, very little power. You won't see any notable difference in battery life on a fully-functioning phone (without a malfunctioning Google Wallet) if you turn off NFC.
When I enabled NFC on my Galaxy Note I was afraid of seeing battery life issues, but I've seen zero additional battery drain in real life usage. As said above, app issues might be a different story, I don't have Wallet on my Note.
If you don't plan on using Wallet you can disable/freeze it.
This all said, the Nexus 7's NFC is weak, I have to TOUCH my MiFare 1k's for the N7 to read it, the Note can read the same tags from 2" away. Only reason it really matters is that I have a tag on the underside of my palm rest at work to force the Phone/Tablet into "work mode" (quieter profile basically) and the Note will read it as-is, N7 I have to flip the stupid pad over to read it.

Are you sure you're touching the tag to the Nexus 7's NFC 'sweet spot'? The antenna is right below the Nexus logo, as shown here:

This is wallet, not nfc.
NFC when running (screen on and device unlocked) accounts for less than 1% of drain. If you factor in all of the screen off time and the associated drain it will account for far less than 1% of overall power used.
Note that 1% is an actual number, not a guess. This was discussed at io and the power consumption measured by Google.

This is true.. I turn nfc on Only when iw ant to use it.. Which has been 3 times since i have had my device.. Anyone on a rooted device with wallet setup.. I would recommend you keep it off. There is no real reports of credit card info being stolen . But why take a chance. If you are root and use wallet/nfc app. Google will NOT help you with theft by nfc readers.

It would do a crook no good, as they can't get your info using a rfid scanner. To begin with, the nfc antenna is only active with the screen on and unlocked, save for a few custom roms that allow the user to select a different nfc polling option. Secondly, the wallet app's pin must be entered before the secure element can be accessed by it. Thirdly, the only "card" stored on the device is a virtual one that can't be used outside of wallet. Your actual payment card info is not stored on the device. Finally, for someone to actually intercept the info transmitted, they would have to pretty much brush up against the device in the area of the nfc antenna.
All that being said, there's no harm in being overly cautious, and a healthy bit of caution is unfortunately a necessity when your PII is involved.

Well carrying loads of cash around with you is less than secure all it takes is muscle. Debt /credit cards are easy hand it over to say a waiter they walk away with and ring it out and could use one of those 15 dollar card scanner.
Only difference is aside from cash if a case of fraud happens you can get your case back(can only speak of my experience with out any fraud proctection turned on or a fee paid)
Also food for thought my gmail is more protected than my banking account. If I gave you my gmail and password you would still not be able to log into my account without my phone with you. If you got my logon on for my bank well you could go on and request a new debit card without my knowledge atleast for a couple of days when an email comes through stating a card has been shipped.

I'm not having this issue with 4.2 on my N7, but I am having a similar issue on the N4. First day I used my new phone I noticed that the NFC accounted for 23% of my battery. Also I couldn't get past the initial loading screen for Google Wallet. I'm guessing it may be a bug in 4.2, and until a fix is made I'll have to leave the NFC option disabled.

Two Xperia V variants???

I bought a new Xperia V for my son and when I looked more carefully i noticed there are differences between them. The screen is different, one of them has two more sensors and the front camera is different as well. Both of them are made in China. Check this:

as i've checked, i'm pretty sure that both phone are original, not fake, i dont know why they are different, but i'ma show you some ways to test these phone (just to make sure).
1. turn on the bravia engine 2 in setting/display, open a sam picture using Album on both phone and see which is more beatiful (set full brightness)
you can change the view angle to see which phone displays better.
2. download the antutu benchmark on playstore (version 4), run it on the phone and see which phone will score higher, (they can only fake the phone, but they cant fake the real power of qualcomm snapdragon s4)
3. type *#*#7378423#*#* and have a check.

If that was so, then this would be the first product I know of produced for Chinese market and international market, where the Chinese variant had better properties. Drive a German make car in China and drive one in Germany, you will know in seconds what I mean.

Yea these are white from the factory. But colours may be user modded, that does not say anything.
The pics are lousy but from what I see, these two show subtle differences in housing design. They are not coming from the same factory. The screen quality seems is completely different. Anyway, don't buy from China if you don't like certain issues.
V has 3 different display vendors: Sony, Sharp and Toshiba. With at least Sharp there's no visible second sensor window in the glass.
Checking which display it is can be done if you have root access; check dmesg output after a reboot for strings containing “panel”.

[Q] Motorola Atrix HD Camera failed to initialize

I have looked and looked on this forum for a potential solution to this problem but to no avail, The only thing i found was for the Atrix 4G so i thought i would start my own thread.
The problem is my Atrix HD MB886 rear camera will not initilize, whenever i click on on the camera app, it stays black for a little while the says Camera failed to initialize.
I was a little curios so i have installed a L.E.D app and a ''Mirror'' app on the phone, the L.E.D works just fine and my front facing camera works just fine, however the rear one still has this problem, i bought the phone second hand from ebay and it had this problem, when i first got the phone it was not rooted, bootloader locks stock ROM etc, i have since rooted the phone, unlocked the bootloader and currently running AOSB 4.4 Kitkat custom ROM.
If anyone can shed some light on this situation or try to help that would be great....
Many thanks!

MODEL NUMBER - MB886

BASEBAND VERSION - MB886_BP_100740.071.65.04P
If you need any more information please ask
Have you done a full wipe or format of everything, manually fastbooted back to stock (not using RSD; doesn't matter what stock), and tried it then? If yes, then you might be crap outta luck and have a bad camera module. If it makes you feel any better, my headphone jack went out about a week after I unlocked my bootloader.....but that's what a Defy is for .
You're not misssing that much, the camera quality ranges from medicore to suck....maybe good with perfect lighting and nothing moving all that much....it does the job, but barley good enough.
Yeah I have done all that, when I bought the phone it was completely as if you had bought it direct from a store brand new no modifications etc, since then I have done the formats and wipes etc etc, what I'm now wondering is how easy it would be to change the camera module, is it soldered at all? Or just unclick the ribbons and swap it out, the main reason for the camera is I just moved to the USA and like to take pictures to send back to my family in England, it would be great if I could get this working some how

Complaints:
* The M8's screen is almost impossible to see when wearing polarized sunglasses. This problem is only when you hold the phone in portrait mode. In landscape mode it looks fine. This is a common problem with LCD screens, but there are steps HTC could have taken to eliminate it, such as using a 45 degree extinction angle, or using a compensating film.
* Button placement: I do not like M8's button placement. I find it hard to turn the phone on or off without inadvertently pressing one of the volume buttons. I greatly prefer M7's recessed volume rocker to M8's non-recessed rocker.
* THIS MAY BE FIXED WITH THE NEW RADIO FIRMWARE IN THE 1.54 UPDATE: My biggest complaint is the fact that the phone often takes over an hour to connect to LTE even when there is a STRONG signal.
My complaints:
1. The power button being on the top of such a large phone is pretty annoying. I came from the GS3, which had the lovely side power button. This is something that I will get used to though. It'd be nice if they made a gesture to lock the phone too.
2. Since the latest update, my mobile signal has been poor. Where I used to get LTE, I now get 3G only. My wifi signal is fantastic compared to the GS3, but the mobile internet is looking rough. If I don't see improvement, I may need to replace the phone to see if it can get better.
Everything else is just incredible. Even with these complaints, I freaking love this phone!

No you can't.
Only way that's possible is if you're on wifi (obviously).
Here are mine, which I'm sure others have mentioned.
1) Size; I actually prefer the size of the M7 over this. It's hard to reach the power button as someone mentioned and the phone is very hard to hold without a case because it's slippery. It almost feels like I'm holding a gigantic EVO LTE. The m7 felt right in my hands. I was surprised because most of the reviews mentioned that it was easier to hold than the m7 due to the curved back. Using it with one hand is pretty tough because I'm so afraid I'm going to drop it.
2) The Gun Metal Gray definitely scratches very easy. I have a small scratch on the back of my phone already and I'm not quite sure how I got it since I baby my phone like my own kid. i was actually going to wait out for the silver version, but with Bestbuy price matching Amazon in conjunction with their $50 instant credit for people who registered their numbers, I felt like I needed to jump on it for $100.
3) Loss of data randomly (never happened on my M7); I understand there is only one antenna and Spark phones rely on CSFB and that it will eventually be fixed.
No other complaints other than those 3. Love the SD Card, Boomsound Speakers, Camera (Yes I do) and the amazing battery life. I no longer have to worry about running out of juice for the entire day.

I'm very tempted to buy this phone on my upgrade but I know that I do not want to cover it up with a case. My hands are rather grippy on smooth surfaces so I find the gunmetal gray to have a perfect finish. What I want to know is how scuffable the finish is on this phone. I only ever keep it in an empty clean pocket or laying back-down on my desk which is usually clean. Will I have an issue with tiny scratches accumulating in the clearcoat?

I've gotten a couple light scratches and I baby my phone. Not sure how I got them. Never had a problem on the back of the m7.
Anyone else's earpiece crackle during a call or when listening to music? I've been through 2 of them that have been that way. Not sure if its supposed to be this way or what. It's not on the bottom speaker, just the top one.

My Observations
I got this phone as a precursor to replace my 5S, if the iPhone 6 doesn't have a 5" screen. I've only had it one day so far my observations are:
The phone takes a long time to load web pages and play youtube videos
The placement of the buttons is a bit awkward.
The Knock feature doesn't work all the time, nor do the swipe to unlock.
I must've gotten a factory defect, the screen is starting to come off in the upper right hand corner where the front camera sits. How that happened? I couldn't tell you.
I have the Sprint Spark Icon in the notification bar (Spark is in Orlando) but the switch between networks is sometimes slow.
Sometimes to get rid of notifications, I have to reboot the phone. Some icons will stay in the notification area even after the app is closed or I clear it.
Coming over from iOS, not being able to quick scroll to the top of a page is frustrating to say the least. The only place that works is in Blinkfeed, which is pretty cool, IMO, thus far.
Twitter apps for Android suck (can't knock the phone for that though.)
I hate the loud beep you get in your ear when ending a call if you're wearing a Bluetooth.

My only gripe is the stupid HTC in a space not used for anything else. If we are dropping capacitive buttons, give us more screen in that spot... not a space for logo.
