I recently upgraded my i897 with Slim 4.2.2 build 3 from 4.1. Before this, I was using stock Gingerbread. With the slim roms my individual ringtones have never worked. I wiped the cache and Davlik before I upgraded the rom. Not sure what is going on but it always plays the default ringtone. Thanks in advance for your help!
I think it is the same problem with media scanner/storage app that surfaced in cm10.1 nightlies in mid March.
If you open up the settings/sound dialog immediately after boot, then try to select a ringtone, you will only see the stock ringtones that are stored in the system/media/ringtones folder. about five minutes later, when media scan has completed, the tones from your internal sd will be available.
any assignments made to tones located on sdcards (vfat) won't survive a reboot.
my workaround has been to copy my custom mp3 tones to /system/media/ringtones and chmod 644 to make sure they are readable by all apps.
before I use cwm to flash an update, I add the custom tones to the zip file under the system/media/ringtones folder and they are included in the new rom. my ringtone choices, including assigned tones to contacts, are preserved.

Thank you! I will try it!
Ok, I tried it. I plugged the phone into my computer by USB and copied all the mp3 into the system/media/ringtones folder. Now for the chmod part....I unplugged my phone and thought it would be simple to figure out how to do it through Root Explorer and I was wrong. How do I chmod? Do you think it would be simpler to compress the mp3s into a zip files and flash 4.2.2. again? Thanks for your help!

the correct app name is Xplore. see play store link in next post with screenshot.
I use an app called xplorer, from google play, with the root settings enabled, both to copy and to change permissions. there are other file manager apps that do the same. if you long press the file in xplorer, a menu opens and change permissions is at the bottom of the list. behind the screen, xplorer takes care of remounting the system as writable, writing the revised permissions, then remounting system again as read only.
in the dialog for permissions, you want to make sure that all the boxes in the read column are checked. the dialog box will show 644 below the boxes, and you click okay.
xplorer also supports adding the files to a zip file.

oops. it is called xplore, no r on the end.

I downloaded Xplore and when I long press on the file, at the bottom of the list is "hex viewer". What am I doing wrong? And thank you in advance for your help!
You need to set X-Plore for root mode in the settings or 'configuration'.
also, it won't show permissions if the file is still on your internal or external sd card, due to vfat partition on the sd cards.
you need to move or copy the files to system/media/ringtones first, then change permissions. that is a linux ext4 partition that supports permissions.
if you are adding them to an existing update.zip then don't worry about permissions - it should get set as part of the update scripts in the zip.

Sorry if the instructions were unclear.
You will have to make the /system/ folder Read/Write before you can make any changes, then change it back to Read Only again when you are finished.
In Root Explorer, look at the upper right-hand corner and you will see a grey button with "Mount R/W", click the button and it will change to "Mount R/O". Now it will allow you to make changes...
Using Root Explorer, navigate to your system/media/ folder and copy bootanimation.zip there. Then move to system/media/video/. Backup or delete the current shutdown folder, then copy the new shutdown folder there...
When you are done copying the files into the /system/ folder, click the "Mount R/O" button and you're done.

Let me know what you think if you like it or not. Also if you need it faster or slower let me know. it seems as tho each rom needs a bit of a tweak for it.
If you don't know how to install it then look at this thread for instructions they should be very similar depending on your rom Other boot Animation

This isn't flashable as i have no idea how to make them flashable through recovery. But it takes about 2 minutes to replace your current boot animation using root explorer or a similar app. If you need help look at the bottom link on my post or Private message me and i'll be happy to walk you through it.
I actually followed all steps. I keep getting the last bootanim that i flashed yesterday. I been breaking my head alllllll day.. ill pm u in a lil.. i can't get anything to load in root explorer over my last flashed anim....

Okay well I'll put the instructions here again just in case anyone else needs them (plus i'll flush it out a bit)
This is again for 480x800 resolution
Installation:
1. get es file explorer or root explorer
2. mount the drive as writable
(with root explorer its just a matter of hitting the button on the top that says "Mount R/W"// with es file explorer you have to go into the menu/settings/root options and check "Root Explorer" and then "Mount File System")
3. take the zip you download here and place it on the root of your sdcard
(I would suggest first looking at your current boot animation and checking the name depending on your rom it may be "bootanimation.zip" or "VZW_bootanimation.zip" or some other variation. You boot animation should be located either in system/customize/resources or system/media or sometimes again a variation. Whatever it is named write it down EXACTLY and rename the bootanimation.zip you downloaded here to match it. Then place it on the SD Card)
4. unmount the drive from your computer
5. go to system/customize/resource (or where your boot animation is stored read above for other possibility) and rename the current VZW_bootanimation.zip to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak to save it just in case (again these files may be names something else like stated above).
6. move the bootanimation.zip you downloaded to the same place as your current bootanimation.zip.bak file ( at this point your old file should have a .bak at the end)
7. restart and enjoy the new boot animation.
I never tried this was. Will report back thank you

If you have root explorer you should be able to just paste it right in. All you need to do is mount the sd as R/W. To do this just click on the R/W button at the top right hand side of root explorer. After pasting it I think you need to change the permission of the zip file as well to let the system access it. You can also do this with root explore.
I'm new on XDA so please press the THANKS button if I was any help. I need at least one thanks to look a bit respectable in this forum.

your answer is correct sir! (its not necessary to change zips permission, they should be fine allready)
@topanyel, remember to NOT COMPRESS your zip folder with the bootanimation in it, else it will not work.

Ok I have read quite a few threads and havent found this issue just yet...
I am followed directions on how to create custom boot animations and did so, I have made a simple metal gear solid boot animation containing 19 frames my issue is when I go to system/media to look for the "Bootanimation.zip" it isnt there...
then I used the search tool on my phone app to find it and ended up in system/bin and the file has no specs... -_- see for yourself I backed up my files and opened the backup on my PC for a screen shot of my folder.

bootanimation.zip not in stock firmware at all. You need a custom kernel that supports bootanimation.zip then if there is one present it will supersede the stock animation.

Understood thanks, would Cyanogen mod be considered a custom kernel? I can try installing that then try again. or is there another method of changing the boot animation that would be considered more simple? eventually I will be installing CM7 anyway.
BTW I am running Gingerbread 2.3.5 and just recently I flashed corn and got cwm as well... as you might already know.
I am reading directions now and will be installing soon, I will get back to this when I am successful.
After reaching step 6 on http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
I googled the issue tried installing the driver and that didn't work :/ I'm stuck on step 6 now.
I tried starting heimdall-frontend and received an error MSVCR100.dll is missing...
Corn is a custom kernel...if you apply root in recovery you should be able to use a root file explorer and paste your zip in /system/media to get to work.

OK so I am sure that I've done everything correctly to root the phone thanks to many helpful people in this forum, but I still cannot find that damn .zip file to replace!
Its killing me because I am so ready to put my edited PNG files in there and test my work out, then share it with everyone
At this very moment my phone is in recovery mode but I will check root explorer once more and take some screen shots. Everything is in QMG under /System/Media and as for /System/Bin there are no file types, I'm so confused
As i said earlier, if You are on a stock firmware there is no bootanimation.zip those qmg files ARE the stock boot animation, just drop your zip in /system/media (make sure you tap the "mount r/w" button on the top right of root explorer before pasting or it won't be able to write there) the kernel should detect the presence of the newly placed zip and play that on boot instead of the stock S.

That was all your quote about donations made me laugh, and the help was much appreciated, I made a small donation but better than nothing
Once again, not affiliated with this app, just found it to be working flawlessly on our poor little HTC Vivids. This is the proclaimed Android 4.3 Camera that's on the Google Play Edition phones. Originally found here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340858
How I got it to work-
1. Move Gallery2.apk out of system/app/ (I backed it up in another folder just in case)
2. Install the Googleeditioncamera.apk from your preferred mirror here
3. Take pictures!

Side notes- Some advanced options are not included in this stock app- Shutter sound cannot be disabled, and you cannot change the camera to save to external storage, the options just arent there.. So if this is important to you, think twice about installing the apk. I've been using the camera on Vibrate mode and it's been silent for me, FYI.
If you find this useful, please hit the thanks button here and in the original thread linked above. Thanks!
How did you move Gallery2.apk out of the app folder? I tried using a file management app and it just gets stuck at 50%. I've also tried straight up deleting it and that doesn't work either. I am unable to access the root phone file through USB.
Thank you.

Alright - I used ES Flie Explorer to move the file to another location as backup, but Gallery2.apk is still there and cannot be deleted. /system is also Readable and Writeable.
EDIT: I went into the terminal and did the following commands;
su
chmod 777 system/app
but received "Unable to chmod system/app: Read-only file system"
