Ok so I decided to unlock my bootloader. Then before rooting I decided to re-lock the bootloader and leave it be. Might root after a while but I want to play with the device at stock for a bit first.
Anyway I seem to have lost some apps. I can't find calculator or torch/flashlight anywhere now. And they were definitely there before I dabbled at all.
Calculator shows under all apps but not in the app drawer and I can't access it through all apps. Torch has gone completely it seems. I'm not sure if any others are missing yet but they could be.
Has anyone else had this and know a fix? I was under the impression that it was only rooting that wiped the data partition?

It's unlocking the bootloader that wipes the data partition, not rooting.

Just a note. Managed to install the apps one by one via file explorer. No custom recovery or rooting needed.....

i am thinking of rooting my phone , for any reason if i want to factory default restore the phone is that restoring will disable the rooting or that rooting will be permanent ?

The only permanent thing you can do is unlock the bootloader.
Rooting, or any other change can usually be undone...

Root will be available after a factory reset, rooting apps mostly come along with unroot functionality.

Basically, once rooted, you can change the ROM on your phone to any compatible one you can find, including the original one...

I received the SGH-i957 for work and they told us not to add any weird apps. What I want to do is remove some the crappy AT&T apps to use less resources. I have rooted an EVO 4g and a HTC Arrive Windows Phone as well as my old HTC Touch Diamond. I have been reading the different threads and I am just curious what you guys think the best method is?

If your work said to not mess with apps then I wouldn't really root it.
If you don't care about that, then just follow the rooting thread. I personally like the kernel root method

I will go into more detail I guess. I want to backup how they gave it to me and run it custom, be it remove apps or a new rom. I am worried about some kind of privacy issues. With my HTC Evo 4g I could backup the original rom completely and then uninstall programs or install a new rom.

Flash twrp and make a nandroid backup then do your root process.

Yeah, I am definitely rooting it. It is ungodly slow with only a few programs on it and it keeps using at&t data even though I have removed all widgets and have very few apps installed. I know that know one wants to hear me say this but every time I use Android I dislike it more and more. I am sorry if I offend anyone.

Ok, I got permission from the boss to root and either clean up the stock rom, remove crap, or load a custom rom. So should I just follow the guide in this and if I have to run a custom rom use the on in this thread. Do I have to use the twrp and nandroid backup to make a backup? Or can I restore the stock rom buy using Method 2 after I follow the Method 1 in the root guide?

I have recently Restored my N1 from an ICS ROM and am back on Gingerbread 2.3.6.
I am wanting to remove some system apps but I cannot for the life of me find out how to root the N1.
Much googling has lead me to dead ends and dead links and I feel I am missing something really obvious that everyone else but me knows.
The guides I have found on rooting all appear to involve custom ROMs which I don't want at the moment.
The bootloader is still unlocked and I know at some point in the past I did have the device rooted on gingerbread but I can't remember how?

If I may be so bold... what would be the best app to use to actually remove the system apps?
I have used one in the past but found that when I removed anything it would shut off the nexus completely and not actually remove anything.
use titanium backup. it would be safe to hv a backup via a custom recovery, before removing system apps...

I'm trying to install an app but it won't work on a rooted device. Anyone know a good work around?
Unroot. There is no work around. Some apps don't allow root for security purposes.
Ps I've used two nandroids to work around one rooted and the other not.

You have to have unlocked your bootloader, and rooted (S-Off helps too) to remove system files (which the Sprint bloatware are). Your best bet is to use a custom ROM that has already removed them.

This is what I did:
1. Unlock Bootloader
2. Root
3. Open Sprint ID
4. Manage ID's
5. Delete the default Sprint one.
6. Freeze all Sprint apps
That seems to make that dumb app stay quiet. Also I'm stock rooted on the OTA.
