I was looking at your and my favorite website for Chinese tablet accessory export, Ankaka. There, I found the following rather... interesting little tablet for sale, the HoneyTab H3:
MOD EDIT. REMOVED LINK
My first question is, "What the hell is this?"
In the land of generic crap knockoffs, it truly stands out, but not beyond its generic crap status. It does have a Tegra2 1GHz dual core processor and rather decent specs overall, until you get down to the part where it only has a measly 512 MB of internal memory. According to specifications, there is a "TF Card Slot," but no "SD Card Slot." I don't understand what this means, but it could signify that the card slot only supports micro SD cards that are only up to 4 GB capacity and not the newer micro SDHC cards that can hold up to 32 GB. If this is the case, the tablet is still garbage, even with all of the other impressive specs it carries.
It comes with a Honeycomb-based ROM that can't run the stupid tablet's own camera, and it only has a crippled version of Flash 10.2 that can only play video like YouTube in a full screen window.
Now I wouldn't buy it, as if I were willing to spend $415 plus shipping, I'd might as well go a bit higher and get a Galaxy 10.1. Really, I'm just curious as to how such a thing exists. Many generic knockoff tablets seem to be uniformly crappy, but this is rather nice looking except for a couple spots that make it completely not worth buying.
Hi,
My husband and I wanted a tablet but the cost for most of them was just too much for us, so we did some research and found that the NC could be made into a tablet right here on XDA. Then it all seemed just too complicated. Somewhere we read that there was a SD card that you could use to make it a tablet and still use the NC. Dual boot thing...We researched that and found these N2A cards. You put the card in the SD slot and you can boot into the NC or ANDROID to use the tablet. Comes with preinstalled applications and this way you don't void your NC warrant. Any problem just remove the SD card and you are back to just NC..
Then we didn't like the price of those new ones either so we searched and found REFURBISHED ones...
Using these now about two weeks and IN LOVE....7" is a great size for us and some of the better tablets are 10'' just too big...
Anyway hope this help somebody here looking for a great inexpensive way to the TABLET world.
Donna aka gramme
Congrats for getting NC to become a full fledged tablet I simply use CM7.2 Mirage Kang ROM, but it's nice you did it easy.
I hope you don't come into any problems with your refurbished SD card though. I always go new when I buy memory cards.
Good luck and have fun!

I think Gramme meant refurb'd nook color... not memory card
This is only for people who actually open to ideas, not for people who just want to ***** and moan.
I wanna buy the 8GB, for every day use it will be perfect for me, but for the odd case where I go on a long plane journey and don't want to take my tablet, I wondered if there is solution...and then I realised there was, and it's ultra compact.
USB on the Go is the saviour here. Pair this adapter with this tiny USB stick and you suddenly have 32GB extra space.
If your feeling more adventurous, you could go down this DIY route too, very cool and I might be trying this myself
But how is this implemented on the software side? Does stock android support this?
sure, usb host ist what you need

Yeap that's possible, but absent of miniSD card is a big deal breaker for me considering this is just only 8GB - and there's a nice article at http://www.androidpolice.com, why this is so cheap considering this is unlocked phone. It sounds like Google did sacrifice some specs make the cost down and more affordable.
I have Samsung Galaxy S III with 16GB, and plust 32GB sd card, I am already running out space since I save a lot of musics, and games on my sd card and since we all carry the phone with us (not like 10 inch tablet), it makes better sense to have bigger space on your phone.
so really 8GB quite deal breaker.
Don't think that I am *****ing and moanning about it, Nexus 4 specs quite amazing and looks premium quality, and what you said about USB stick would work just fine, but just wanted to share my 5 cent opinion here.
I think that this could work. Im also looking to buy the 8gb flavor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone will be happy with 8GB, I just didn't want people coming in here just to moan. It's down to cost, and if you need more space, that's cool.
16GB is enough for me, and if I need more space I'll use dropbox/google drive
Of course I would prefer microSD slot, but... I guess for 350$ which includes S4 Pro, 2GB RAM, 2100mAh battery, two cameras and its a nexus, we can't complain about anything!!

Yeah, the lack of storage and no sd card for me is also a deal breaker. It's such a shame because I'm really excited about the device. The price here in the UK is so low for what appears to be a high end device, it's amazing. In fact, I've never felt so conflicted about a device. I really want it, but I know it won't hit the mark, purely for lack of storage. With games like NOVA 3 taking up 3GB, plus my sat nav requiring almost 2GB, there won't be much space for other stuff. Data coverage where I live is pretty hit and miss so streaming media from the cloud still isn't a viable alternative for me yet which is a shame. Perhaps it will at least help to drive down the price of other handsets that have high end SoC?
I think the OP's suggestion is a very good one. This approach works well most of the time on a Galaxy Note, as long as it's just a flash drive or micro SD card that the phone can successfully power. I wonder if there would be a way to toggle something like 'directory bind' on and off so that you could put music/media/data files for games on a micro sd card, then just plug it in when you need, change the path of the internal SD card to the external one, then fire up a game. That would be a reasonable compromise from my perspective.
Such a shame, it's so cheap
I don't understand the people who want to buy the 8gb version. Its only a little bit more for the 16gb version.
.. and don't say its because you can't afford it.. because if this phone was the same price range as the galaxy nexus or any other high end smart phone you would still buy it.
Just pay that little bit extra and get double the space.
I have a USB-OTG cable and a USB microSD card reader so I would just buy another 16GB/32GB card and carry that around with me. It is easy to take out and plug in and easy to put away when not needed.
Hey guy's. My Girlfriend got a Galaxy Nexus and YES USB-OTG is part of the Chipset Configuration the GN comes with! The Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 Chipset supports OTG as well. In the pure Android-Roms the Nexus Devices are running the Firmware supports OTG by default. As I know it's included in the kernel... so no need to create a problem!!!
buy a OTG Adapter - 1,99€ on Amaz...
buy a USB Stick 32Gb. - 12,00€ even on Amaz..
buy a LG NEXUS 4 16GB - 349,00€
= 362,99€ complete!
so if you compare this the other "leading devices" you save up to 200€!!! so you see, no need to spend tears and cry.... Start smiling cause you got a few buck's left to buy some Christmas presents for the family!
I use Google Music and sync my photos to my 50GB dropbox account (thank you Samsung!). 16GB is more than I ever need. The only time I get close to using that much is if I'm dual booting 2 different roms.
I do this with my Nexus 7 and plan to continue doing it with the Nexus 4! Really useful when I want to stick a film or tv show on there and watch on the go.

Yes this would work. I personally have done it with my Gnexus and nexus 7. However, you have to be very careful with that thing sticking out of your phone. It could be very easy to knock the phone over or drop it or something and I would be concerned about hurting the stuff inside the phone.
good alternative... currently have the 16GB NS4G and was really excited when i saw the tweet about the N4 and N10 today... disappointed by no Verizon/Sprint compatibility tho... this definitely would've been my next phone if i could use it on these networks...
question about his alternative tho... is 32GB the limit it can read or can you go up to something like 64GB storage as well??

There's no limitation. You could plug in a 3TB external hard drive if you wanted.

lol no... but i have my hard drive b/c i'm using it to transfer files between people... i mostly just stream Pandora and don't play many games... the space isn't the issue for me really on this device... no cdma is ... but it's great to know there's essentially no limit to the sd/usb car we can add to this!
Why do you need so much space? I'm using an Xperia S right now, with 32GB and I've got over half of it free. 18GB free to be precise, but I haven't been deleting photos and such that I don't need, so they're at 1.3GB.
I am thinking of getting a 32 GB microSD card for my nexus 7. I am going to use http://dx.com/p/c310-otg-tf-card-re...er-for-samsung-i9100-i9300-i9220-n7100-174106 ( this otg sd card reader ) to expand my storage. I am going to use directory bind and play games through it.
The reader itself supports reading speeds up to 480mbps.
I have heard that class 10 micro sd cards may not be as fast as class 6 in certain scenarios, so I am now at a loss to which micro sd card I should purchase.
Just remember if you go the OTG route that you'll always have to have the card reader sticking out of the side of your Nexus 7 when playing those games. I have enough trouble with holding the tablet while trying to use both hands that the addition of the reader makes things worse for me. OTOH I don't mind it while reading books or comics, YMMV.
In addition, DirectoryBind stops working as of Android 4.2+ and never will work. FolderMount is a much better replacement and works from Android 2.3+

Well, being an avid mobile gamer stuck with an 8GB Nexus 7, expanding the storage on the nexus 7 is a necessity. The OTG route seems like the best method or should I say, only method. The soldering method isn't plausible since I can't solder for nuts lol.
I personally use android 4.1.2 so directory bind works fine. If I were to upgrade to android 4.2, I can't play any games with the atrocious performance,so even if fokdermount works, the gaming experience is not what one would prefer.
Personally I don't really mind the extra kibble,it's no different from gaming on the nexus 7 while charging .
Perhaps you could share your knowledge on the different speeds of micro sd cards
I would recommend getting a Sandisk Ultra microsd card. Most class 10 cards aren't anywhere close to class 10 speeds, but this one is the real deal.

Foldermount does not seem to work with my sentinal custom rom ( franco kernel) with android 4.2.2 . why is this so?
Wait for Toshiba Exceria cards to be launched later this year. "Worlds Fastest" is what they are saying.
Samsung SD cards seem like the fastest. They are like around $15 more expensive, but imo its worth it for their reliability and speed. Their class 10 is better than the speed of Sandisk class 10 from what I have read in the past.
Aren't there also people on YouTube who benchmark these things and post reviews on how accurate the information is? Never checked for things like SD cards but I've seen some for hard drives and plenty for android phones.
Was in the process of sourcing parts to follow up suggestions in other threads for making a small external micro SD card reader, and came across these. The memory is fixed at 8, 16, or 32 GB but the price is less than I've been paying for the micro SD cards!
http://www.scan.co.uk/search.aspx?q=otg
From prior experience with the supplier, although currently available pre-order only the actual items will be on the shelf soon. Certainly be getting a couple, and find a different project to play with.

Thanks for that link, I got the 16G version because of the direct plug into the device.. I've been wanting to try out F2FS and you gotta nuke the whole SD to do it, and I didn't really want to transfer it all over USB again. I think this will be much easier to deal with, and faster to transfer files back and forth from the device and get it back up again after formatting.
I'm planning to purchase either
the SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive, or
the Kingston DT microDuo, or
the Transcend JetFlash 380S.
They are very similar to each other. I wonder whether they differ on speed etc.
Any reviews based on experience with these or other dual USB drives are very much welcome.

Dunno, but the Kingston linked in my post works great for both USB and MicroUSB on my G2 and N7.

Love it. I now keep all of my TWRP backups and Titanium backups on it. Frees up gobs of space and makes it so easy (and fast!) to transfer files to and from my PC.

I'm glad I got the 32g for just a few bucks more, my N7's whole SD card and a few TWRP's from each device and it's about full Although I could nuke the SD card backup now and free up a bunch of space.
It's a nice device, but almost too small. I'm afraid to carry it anywhere, so I put it in my zip-up earbud case since I carry them with me everywhere.
If you don't want cables or bits that plug in there's another Kingston option 'wireless card reader'
