GO Dialler/Contacts annoyances. Best alternative? - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using Go Dialler/Contacts for well over a year, previously on my HTC desire and it had the same issue back then where it wouldn't register the cleared missed calls, so if you got a missed call, it would say 1 missed call, then you would check the missed call and the notification would go. Then if you got another missed call (and only 1) it would then say 2 missed calls, this would go on and on until you restarted the phone. On the desire I solved this by putting the app in system/app with root explorer.
Another annoyance is that when you dial or try to save a number, it automatically puts spaces between digits where country/area code are. I like to keep my numbers all in the same format, that means no spaces or anything, so just +XXXXXXXXXX
I use my phone for business so save a lot of numbers, this is going to be a pain to have to edit each number while saving a contact.
So just wondering, since go dialler/contacts hasn't been updated since nov '12, is there any newer and better alternatives that work the same way with the dialler predictions (and having latest dialled show up smartly when composing new message in GO SMS also - this is handy!) but which don't have the annoyances?
Any feedback appreciated!

I am new to the world of Android, having previously been a RIM and iOS user. However, since coming over to Android and seeing the open nature of the platform...loving it. Anyway, back to the matter in hand....Contacts+ works brilliantly, I would suggest giving it a look :good:

I use 'ExDialer & Contacts' app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5tb2Rvb2h1dC5kaWFsZXIiXQ..
Very simply themable dialler and contacts app.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know what this means?
"This is a trial version with 7 days trial period. When the trial period expired, you will be asked to buy PRO version. You can still keep trying if you haven't decided to buy"
So is it free to keep using or what? Do they keep bugging you to upgrade/pay?

I don't have experience of it,but I would guess you will get nags to upgrade, although with what frequency I couldn't say. I think that is one of the reasons I stuck with contacts+...it's free! That and the integration with FB, it's merge facility etc

Going to try out exdialer first I think, seems to have a lot of recommendations from what I've seen, first impressions are good anyway and it's solved the issue of the number having the spaced put automatically. I think the missed call issue might be in every dialler so I might have to put it in system app

Is free but every 7 days when you next open the dialler it will show a screen asking if you want to buy the full version.
Very easy to ignore if you don't want to pay for the full version.
Sent from my Motorola Razr I using Tapatalk 2

thanks, every 7 days, so 52 notifications a year, hmm, seems a bit much

It used to come up daily but i think the developer changed it to 7 days because too many people complained!

Thanks, I'll give it a trial anyway and see how it fares.

Try Dialer One, a very nice app.

Thanks, it actually turns out that ex dialler doesn't solve the issue with numbers being automatically formatted with spaces etc also, the add contact screen is a bit messy of exdialler, I find go contacts better in that regard, go may even be slightly faster?
Would anyone know how to get around the auto formatting at all? There's an option in exdialler not to use area codes or something which I thought would help but it doesn't.

I don't find a problem with the spaces in the numbers so can't help with that one!
Regarding the add contact, when I click on the + button to add a contact it takes me to my default Motorola add contact screen (which is also messy!) so I'm not sure there is anything I can do about that.
When you add a contact is it taking to you an ex dialler add contact screen?

Yes, I downloaded Ex Dialler and Contacts (I'm not sure if there's a simple "ex dialer" link without the contacts?) but now I can choose either ex dialer contacts or go contacts. Unless ex dialer is using the motorola contacts?

Have now tried dialer1 and contacts+.
Contacts+ is a bit overkill for me and not customisable to get rid of contact pictures, change font etc so it just looks too clunky for me.
I'm very happy with Dialer 1, but there's two things I miss from Go Contacts:
1) The ability to search part names, so say for example you had a contact saved with a long, easily forgetable name, something like josternberg and you could never remember it, but you knew part of his name was "stern", that if you type 78376 it would show up. Unfortunately at the moment it doesn't, but it does in other aps (Go Contacts/Dialer and Contacts+). This would be especially useful for anyone who has saved contacts without putting spaces between certain words. So imagine I had a few hundred android developers phone numbers and saved them as: androiddevappname, I could get to all dialer contacts by typing "342537" for dialer, even though it's surrounded by other characters.
2) Alphabet scrolling in the contact window. At the moment there's only a little green bar that can be scrolled down/up. In Go Contacts/Dialer, there was a permanent alphabet sidebar (small but capable) which you could hit any letter to get to that section of your contacts. I've over 1,000 contacts saved with a sequential first name code starting with VTA (for my business) and after saving a new contact, I used to be able to quickly to the letter "w" scroll up a step and check that the new contact I saved was there, two actions but without the alphabet bar it's going to take a bit of scrolling to get there.
Also waiting on the release of light theme

I am pretty sure you can enable smart dialing in dialerOne settings...

Thanks negus, yes dialer1 does have smart dialing, but will only work at the start of each name, so say if I had you saved in my phone as "xdaforum negus40", I'd be able to find you by numbering in N E G U S or X D A, but not by numbering in U S 4 0 or F O R U M. I sent the dialer 1 team an email which they replied to quickly saying they'll look into adding these functions

Phonebook App by Voxmobili Onmobile

Phonebook
Voxmobili - Onmobile
Contacts are among the most important data on your phone. Phonebook gives them the place they deserve on your G1 phone.
Phonebook comes with a new user interface, a landscape view, a dialer and an activity log which centralizes calls and messages.
Your contacts stay on your phone, they are not sent to any remote servers.
Check it out in the market it looks good
more updates will be coming
The only thing that I wish it had was the ability to view all display groups. All you have to choose from is all or contacts with numbers. I would like to have MyContacts in the list, but other than that it is a slick app.
I actually almost love Phonebook... but it's SO FREAKING SLOW. Omg. I love that you can show contact images in the list, but my jebus, it takes like 5 minutes for my contacts to finish listing, and the scrolling is horrid if you have a lot of contacts. (I guess my 60 contacts are a lot for this app...)
I have it installed though, just so I'll know if it (ever) gets an update.

The exact same reason I uninstalled it.
Yup...was really slow... BUT it seems like the new update has addressed the speed issue somewhat. I haven't used it much since the update, but it did crash once.
seems to work fine, is ther away to go straight into 'phonebook' by pressing the green button? or does that go to g1 phonebook no matter wat.
One thing that I didn't like was that it seemed like it didn't share information with the stock contact list. I recall adding photos and updating numbers and e-mail addresses in it and it wasn't synced with my gmail contacts. Screw that, that's a big reason why I have a freakin' google phone.
Can anyone confirm or refute this?
did u add/edit after you u installed phonebook? when i installed phonebook it automatically synced all my contacts/pictures/information to phonebook.
i still have no idea how to set it as the default phonebook.. help

Great App! Very slick interface but having the ability to sort through your various Google groups would be killer! I have over 1000 work contacts which gets in the way when I am trying to quickly look up a friend's number. I know it's free and I am VERY grateful , just thought I would give some constructive feedback! Thanks!
anybody how to make this the default so that when I press the call button PHONEBOOK APP pops up and not G1 phonebook?
the dev said thats not an option yet, once its more stable he will add the default app option
i have been using it for a while now....when it origionally launched it was very choppy and kept it installed so i knew when it was updated.....now the new version is awesome....cant wait for some grouping features and the ability to make this my default PB hurry hurry LOL
i think this phonebook app drains battery alot.
Not available in my market, either because I'm using an ADP1 phone or because I'm in the wrong region/country. To be honest this crap is starting to piss me off. Every passing week I find that more and more apps, including free ones, are unavailable to me for God knows what reason. Even Apple's walled garden approach is better than this seemingly arbitrary crap. *sigh*

I need Help Somebody know how erase the register of calls under the favorites dialer?

Hi from mexico, sorry for my english, the cuestion is
Somebody know how erase the register of calls under the favorites in the dialer? some like the logassist pro, please some helpme, some save my relasionship =P
This is such an annoying and useless feature.
The "frequently called" cant be erased manually. Not sure if theres any apps but very interested if there are. I absolutely hate how that page is filled with nonsense when it clearly says "favorites" yet decides on its own to add more than the ones I dub as favorites.
They're stored under application > manage applications > contact storage > clear data. Make sure you make a backup of all your contacts on Gmail as a precaution.
Thanks for the tip..but it still does not prevent this list form re-accumulating.
Id prefer a much more permanent solution.
Thnks
Thnks for the answer, but in mexico the 3g is very expensive, for the backup of my contacs ineed a wifi conection and no many places here have this conection, the problem here is erease just some frequent calls not alls, some body have a ansewr for this cuestion???
There is an app to save numbers to your sim. You could save the number to sim and delete from contacts, then refresh from sim, and bang, now you are sneaky again.
You should save your relationship by not calling people you shouldnt. Or lock your phone.

hah, yes. Prediction: It will end badly even if you manage to delete those numbers.
Yep, I ad this problem as well. I had numbers of certain people as my fav that I didnt want my gf to see. Nothing bad, just you know how women get.
Anyways the app I used is called "LogAssistPro "
It would allow you to choose and pick or all contacts to keep from showing up in the favorties.
Or you could use a 3rd party dialer app that doesnt use the fav tab? I now use SuperDial now so when you press my call button it brings that app and its easier to keep the history cleaner.

Kudos my friend. Log Assist Pro works like a charm.
For the goody two shoes who think this is all about hiding bad behavior....my G1 is a new number the previous owner must have signed up for EVERY service and owes money to every one so I get 4-5 calls a day from marketers and collectors. Grouping them all up under a
"teledouches" contact , directly to VM , and now Log assist has tremendously lessened my aggravation with that.
Gotta love Android.

Wow. Just found a new feature.

First of all, from HTC Kaiser to Samsung Vibrant to HTC HD 7 & I'm never going to look back!
OK now:
1. Go to an Email tile
2. Tap on the far left (next to the bolded name of the sender)
3. Voila - you have a slick option to select mail
Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere. Thought it might be useful
Yeah found it the other day by mistake but I didn't think it was any earth mover
Yeah, my phone actually pointed the feature out the other day - I was deleting several emails one at a time, and a little info bar appeared at the top to say you can click on the left to quick select.
Not an earth mover at all, but neat that it recognised what I was doing and was able to tell me how I could do it quicker!

That makes no sense, what is the point of keeping an email once you have read it? I check most of my emails on my desk top, the phone I use to track what is happening via emails for 4 different accounts when out with clients.
I dont need 100 emails sitting on my phone.
I am simply stating that every phone I have every used even old ones allowed you to do a select all feature for old sms phones.
HD2 has it, why was it not placed into WM7, just a small feature which is important but also missing as many important ones are.
but face book is there, wheeepy another face book driven phone, like we dont have enough of those.
Here's another one that you may (or may not) be aware of.
when typing press and hold on the actual text you have been typing. A cursor will appear allowing you to re-position anywhere within the text.
very handy for going back to make changes (like inserting a space between words, inserting words etc.

[Q] How to keep phone from 'forgetting' the area code when texting.

Alright. The screen broke on my first Captivate because I was clumsy/stupid. Put the claim in for insurance, got a new phone, set everything up. Nice shiny phone, what could go wrong? For one single contact, it 'forgets' the area code when I go to message them from contacts or reply to their messages. I have to type in their name and choose the number from the drop down list. Very annoying as this is the person I text the most. I've seen two other threads on this subject, but there was no mention of a cure. I've tried deleting and re-entering the contacts, to no avail. I tried using GO Sms, it has the same problems. I have stock 2.1, running LauncherPro -in case that matters.
I think I'm in the clear to bump this, as it has yet to be resolved and it has been a month. Please. anyone? I'm certain I'm not the only one to experience this problem.
I just started putting the area code into my contacts' phone numbers. I did it on my PC in Google's contacts app, though.
If only it was that easy. The area code is in the contact's phone number! I click reply to a text and it will often disappear! Thanks for trying though. I remember reading once that it was a bug in the actual contact management itself, but I thought the great people here would be able to come up with a solution.
Edit: Actually, I am adding this contact to google contacts as I type, maybe your suggestion will work after all! I'm no sure yet do to the sporadic nature of the bug.

I think these methods worked for many people. Use one:
1. Do a full factory reset.
2. Open messaging
click new message
Add offending contact to the send list
click to type in the send list and hit backspace until you have deleted the incorrect phone number.
then type in the correct phone number.
type a test message and hit send to fix the contact permanently.
3. Delete the contact. Ask the contact to call you. In the call log, long press and add to contact
Adding to Google Contacts didn't work after all. I am thinking of Flashing a custom ROM tonight once I decide on which.
Thanks for the help though! It is really annoying.

[REQUEST] Replace HTC Stock Phone Dialer

I desperately want to be able to replace my entire dialer for my HTC One. I am running ViperROM with the standard HTC Sense Phone Dialer. While i know there are many dialers in the google play I can use to Dial with, none of them are actually replacing the stock App because incoming calls and any dialed calls still open up the HTC Dialer. I realize this is not an easy task, because there are many different things that need to be replaced for this to happen. I will donate money for this app, something reasonable. I've always contributed to development that is deserved and will continue to do so. I assume this would be possible just with some work if devs could get the HTC Camera to work on the GE edition, maybe its the same idea of reverse engineering (I'm open to correction) In the following post, devs have managed to get the HTC Camera working on the GE version. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351965
**The reason I am wanting this is because I am used of my iPhone in which when I dialed a number, no matter if i used an area code or not It pointed to the persons contact (Aka global contact lookup). With the HTC Dialer, if I don't dial the number EXACTLY like it is stored then just shows up as a number in my outgoing and never shows the contact photo or the contact at all. Same thing for incoming calls if i do not have them stored with an Area Code. I have been told this may be something to with a patent dispute from apple and HTC, and HTC just never wanted to add it back. I know pretty much every other Manufacture that skins android this works fine with. Just not HTC.

It's easy for you to say that when you're used to it, but many of my close friends I know there numbers by memory and i find it extremely faster to just dial the numbers, and not just that when i store number i would not like to have it exactly like to comes in. This is the only phone i've owned in years that does this. It may seem like nothing to some people but me and a buddy both have this phone and both are used to dialing numbers from memory, which IMO is much faster.

As a matter of fact the HTC dialer searches by Name and Number at the same time so you should be covered with this dialer. still there are a whole bunch of dialers available at the Play Store. TouchPal is pretty good.

Sorry, but you obviously don't understand what i am saying. This is a known issue. And its not hard to reproduce. Find a phone number that is stored in your phone with an area code. Now dial that number without an area code. The contact will not show up when dialing out. Same thing if someone calls you and you do not have a number stored with area code. Vice versa. This is a known issue and has been talked about on different forums randomly. It is not hard to reproduce.

And you obviously skimmed over my entire post, i wrote you that i tried dialers in the playstore, in which all of them still use the system dialer when receiving or calling out, in turn DOES NOT do a global contact lookup unless the number is dialed exactly like it is stored.
The AOSP dialer would be great if possible

I know it has to be possible, for the fact that i am running this ROM just to see how hes done it, and hes implemented the AOSP dialer perfectly on a SENSE system with many other GE apps.

While I do appreciate your help, you're mistaken or don't quite understand fully. You do suffer this, EVERY HTC One ROM has this issue, i've talked to countless HTC Tech support its the same thing for everything. There are many forums about it. So you understand....
Store a contact with this the following:
337-555-5555
Name: Testing
...Now to test this open your normal HTC Dialer
and Dial 555-5555
---That contact will not show up
Hear thee hear thee. You can replace with AOSP dialer all you want. And it will look nice and all handy dandy and stuff. The second you hit call, you are back in the HTC dialer. And when you answer it will be HTC dialer.
You can delete the HTC dialer and it will not change.
You can delete the HTC phone app and replace with AOSP and then you are really screwed. Force closes galore.
The moral of the story is, if you want a full AOSP dialer on Sense, you're gonna have a bad day.
::Humor
Edit:Google edition. Not aosp.

I thank you don't trying to help, but please read the whole post and especially the entire comment right above yours. When you make a call you still use HTC dialer and it starts dialing, and receiving calls which don't match up with contacts after dialing or receive unless contacts are exactly the same. Read.

I did read. Did you even try using the app? I use it to dial out and it shows incoming calls. All of which match up.

That is your opinion but in my opinion it clearly states in everything I wrote what the issue was. And if they read the entire article they would not have posted some of those things. You may take that as rude, I just think anyone should read the entire post before commenting is all.

I did use the app, i've used many dialers, they will never actually replace the stock dialer after making a call that is built into the system, you can see this after you dial a number, it reverts back to HTC Dialer, Read the post tyler wrote above. I guess i am not explaining my self correctly.
Do the following:
Save a contact as followed:
Name: Testing
Number: 555-555-5555
Now do the following:
Open up any dialer of your preference. Dial 555-5555 Exactly like that. When you type that in you WILL SEE that correct contact.
Now as soon as you click the call button it will revert back to HTC Stock dialer, in which the contact does not match up without the exact number that it is stored as. You will only see "Dialing 555-5555" with no contact photo instead of "Dialing Testing" with a contact photo. Also, when you look at your call log you will see that correct contact, because you are using a thirdparty app, but when its ringing you will see HTC Dialer and if you do have the number saved EXACTLY like its stored then you will see the contact infromation. But if you have it stored as 555-555 and they call in with an area code which every phone number has...the contact will not show.
The only thing im asking here is if someone could replace the entire system dialer. While I appreciate people trying to offer ideas there is NOTHING that will fix this unless someone figures out how to effectively replace the system dialer completely, which as tyler wrote is very difficult. Using third party apps will not fix this issue.
This is also called global contact lookup, in which most apps can do this, which work fine before actually pressing Dial, then the system dialer takes over and if your number is not exact it will not show the contact.
