This is a bit of a problem. Yesterday, i went from rooted OTA ICS to JB which i was able to restore the root. I used titanium backup to get all of my apps and data back after i had to do a factory reset for the JB install to take. Today, I went to place a phone call and when i hit the "Phone" app on my home screen, i get the message "App not installed". I get the same problem with opening contacts. I go into the app drawer and there is not a Phone or Contacts app. When i tried to go into system settings, i found that it was gone too.
I can still receive calls, and if i go through a text message and tap the call icon, it will place a call. i just have no way of accessing the dialer, my contacts or my system settings right now. When someone calls, the contacts name shows up as it should so the contacts data has to be there some where. Any ideas?

I will FREQUENTLY get a notification of a new text message, it will read the first few lines in the notification bar, and display in my text message widget, but when I go to my inbox there is no sign of that text message at all.
I've used handcent
I've booted handcent
Used stock
Used Message Widget by Till esser
And all sorts of ****.
Wiped/factory data reset
Took apps off my sd/cleared the partition
It's been happening for about two weeks or more and it's bull****.
Any advice?
com.android.mms a large number of sms messages are being send. select "ok" to continue of "cancel" to stop sending

I had the same problems, so I just switched back to stock sms.
this happened to me a while back, except mine would crash every time i open the messaging app. I simply did a factory reset, and it started working again.
This also happens to me now and then for no apparent reason, and then will stop and work correctly for a long period of time. I really have no ideas.
It happened to me when I was on JACxHeroSki v1.5 ROM and I also had an automatic task killer running in background. I uninstalled task killer and the problem went away.
As a complement, you could install Handcent and activate the "Auto retieve" and "Self check" options, that's how I'm working now and I haven't had any problems. Currently, I'm running the latest MghtyMax ROM and it completely solved that issue and other ones like the "3-ring" delay on incoming calls and the blinking LED.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: also (on Handcent) enable the "pop-up window" option when a text arrives. At least, it will give you the option to read and reply the message instantly if your texts are still getting lost. You could also install a "SMStoEmail" application, look for it on the Market.
Got a replacement N1 from HTC.
Like with the first replacement, the Google "Backup" to transfer installed apps and settings does not work at all.
How can I either FORCE the "back up my settings" feature to work or is there a (FREE) alternative backup program that I can use?
well i dont think there's a way for call log and sms messages unless you use titanium backup. but what i do is use sms backup app (free) and call track (free) which run as a service at all times in teh background. sms backup sends all your texts to your gmail account in real time, under its own label, and call track sends all your call log to your google calendar in real time.
this week i needed to refer to an old text message, so i open gmail, find the sms label, and there is my complete text history in individual threads by contact in an IM style conversation, shows received and my replies. its brilliant. its a permanent record of all your texts and calls ever made.
i find when bouncing between ROMs and whatnot, that the only thing you lose everytime is texts and call log. everything else gets reloaded, like all apps get redownloaded automatically, settings get saved, bookmarks get saved, etc. so using those 2 apps basically saves me from losing anything.
EDIT: if you still have your old nexus, just install those 2 apps, and you can do a backup of everything now. it will take a little while to upload it all, but then from here forward just let those apps run all the time and you never have to worry about it again.
Thanks - I have been using call tracker. will try sms backup.
So how do I backup all my other settings (eg exchange, wifi, ringtone, ...) and apps?
As I mentioned in the OP, I can enable and disable Google's back up my settings however I want ... it just doesn't seem to work!

Is there any way to force Backup SMS to use names instead of [email protected] in the to/from (which is rather stupid)
SMS Backup & Restore app, as it says.
Call log Backup & Restore, as it says.
APN Backup & Restore, as it says.
All those back up the data to SD card.
All the rest is covered either by Google backup (if you check the "backup everything" on the old phone and don't check it when you setup a new one), or by Titanium backup.

I don't understand. It does use the names for me. All my threads in gmail are sorted by caller name.

For me WiFi is backed up by Google's backup. Ring tones are on the memory card. I don't use exchange.
So I've had a friend's old Droid for a few months, and it's worked alright for the most part, but the other day it just decided to completely screw up.
As soon as I boot up these guys force close:
Amazon mp3 (multiple times)
google services framework
messaging
bluetooth share
gmail
google.process.
calendar storage
Other symptoms:
- I can make and receive calls, but neither I nor the other person can hear anything.
- I can't receive texts. Handscent lets me see the list of conversations, but if I try to view one it force closes. The stock messaging app instantly force closes.
- The phone won't recognize the SD card
- Trying to see the call log results in a force close for android.process.acore
- On the stock power management widget, the GPS button and the screen brightness button don't do anything. They highlight the borders like they're being pressed but the icon doesn't change... the rest of the buttons seem to work fine.
- I can change the screen brightness using the Quick Setting app, but as soon as I go to the home screen it goes back to full brightness.
- If I turn on wi-fi, it immediately turns back off again.
I've tried clearing the data and caches for Calendar, Calendar Storage, Contacts, Contacts storage, Gmail, and Google Services Framework multiple times, but it all seems to get reset upon rebooting, even if I turn off the auto-sync before I reboot, which also gets reset to on upon rebooting.
Android version 2.2.3
Baseband version C_01.43.01P
Kernel version
2.6.32.9-g68eeef5
[email protected] #1
Build number FRK76
Not rooted. I wouldn't mind starting over or maybe rooting, if only to get rid of the bloatware and get wireless tethering... I just want to save a bunch of texts I haven't backed up with Handscent. Oh, and that app will let me try to log in, but it says my login details are incorrect even though I can log in on their website.
Anyway, I'm beginning to think I have a trojan and some government is tracking me with undisableable GPS or my phone has been haunted.
Oh, and I might add, I didn't install any new apps or even change any settings before this started happening. Any thoughts?
I also listed which apps work or don't work, if that helps...
Doesn't work (Force closes):
AK notepad
Alarm clock xtreme free
Amazon mp3
browser
calendar
capital one
chargebar
digital clock widget
draw free (doesn't say force close, just closes)
dropbox
Facebook
Gmail
Goggles - took a while authenticating then force closed
Handscent - can see the message list but force closes on looking at one of them
messaging
play store - seems to force close after it accesses my credentials
Talk - doesn't ever sign in
Voice dialer - immediately says "please try again. You can also try restarting your phone."
Youtube - "There was a problem with the network response."
Works:
calculator
camera [[works but no sd card recognized]]
clock
car home
contacts
Easytether
Gallery
Gasbuddy
Gpad
Maps
Market
music [[works - doesn't seem to play anything though]]
news & weather [[works, but can't get any weather info]]
OI file manager
Quick settings
Stopwatch & Timer
Tweetdeck - I can tweet from it, force closes sometimes though. (Didn't before)
Voice recorder
Also, all the data for contact storage, calendar etc. reappears after I reboot the phone, even when my number has been programmed onto a different phone.
Reflash
Did you try reflashing your droid?
No, and I'm confident that would fix it, but that would erase the texts that I want to save.
Look for com.zegoggles.smssync in the Market, it backs up messages and call logs using your Google account. Once you're done, reflash (CM6 works great in Droid and Milestone), then reinstall the app and restore your messages. Good luck!
It's been almost a week since the stock Messages app started acting up.
If I try to open the app by tapping the icon, it will start, briefly show the messages and close itselt with an error prompt that allows me to close it or send an error report. If I receive an SMS and tap the notification, the app opens and shows the message, I can reply and it works fine this way.
Restarting the phone sometimes solves this right away but it appears at random times. I don't text that much via SMS (mainly WhatsApp and Skype) but it's annoying to not be able to open the app to send an SMS on the rare occasions I need to.
I have an unlocked US model, I'm not rooted or anything. Using stock with Nova Launcher Prime and a couple icon packs.
Has anyone experienced this problem with the Messages app?
I'm currently waiting for the 4.2.2 update to show on the phone. I hope this is fixed in this update.
If the update doesn't fix it, I will try Textra or SMS Now. I've read good things bout them but I really didn't need an extra messaging app since I received or need to send 1-3 SMS a day.
Having a 3rd-party SMS apps will interfere with the stock Contacts and Dialer apps in some way?

First thing I would do is go into settings > apps >all. Go to messages then force stop. Reset defaults and delete data.. That should reset anything you may have changed on error. If that doesn't work do a factory reset. If that doesn't work then I would say your launcher has a conflict
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I already deleted its cached data and reset default options. Could be Nova Prime Launcher having a conflict with Messages, but the strange thing is that it started to happen long after installing Nova.
I'm waiting for the 4.2.2 update. When it shows I will update and do a factory reset.
Thanks
I have recently purchased a GT0I9505 and have rooted it, but have not installed any custom ROMs. I am using GO SMS Pro and when I get a new message I get the notification, but when I open the app and try to open the message, the whole thread is blank, including old messages (I have transferred my old messages across from my S2 using Titanium Backup).
I have tried deleting the app data and cache from the Application menu in 'settings', but this does nothing, and doesn't even delete my message threads. I have even uninstalled GO SMS Pro and installed another app, but this doesn't even work properly, so I don't think it's a GO problem. An interesting note is that when I uninstall GO SMS Pro and reinstall it using the Play Store, my messages all come back up (in list view only).
If I receive a text I get the popup, so I can read the message, but then when I open it up in the app, the whole thread is just blank. Can someone help, or even tell me where I can find the stored SMS messages on my phone so I can delete the file. I have tried everything but cannot delete a single text message!
Try restoring your backup of GO SMS Pro without data in TiBu.
