Easiest way ever to install win7 on shift

I had many difficulties to install windows 7 to my shift, maybe because of my USB stick. And then every guide was a little bit complicated - too many instructions, too many steps, too easy to make a mistake and then go back to the beginning..
Didn't want to buy an external dvd-drive either..
Anyway, all this before I found this article.

In this method we install Windows 7 on a clean partition like the normal DVD boot method. Only change is we don’t use a DVD drive in this guide. Please follow the below instructions carefully and don’t skip any steps to make things quickly!
1. Download the Windows 7 ISO files from Microsoft. I hope you have already downloaded one.
2. Download and install Virtual Clone Drive from http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
3. Firstly, go to the directory where you have saved Windows 7 ISO file. Right-click on the ISO file, select Open with and then select “Mount files with Virtual Clone Drive” to mount your ISO file.
4. Go back to My Computer (or Just Computer) and then double-click on the Virtual Clone Drive icon to start Windows 7 installation process.
Yes, you are installing Windows 7 without a DVD or USB drive!
5. Next, follow the normal Windows 7 installation procedure to finish the installation. Windows may restart during the install process. Worry not, everything will go fine.

There already are some from microsoft availabale via the link in the personalize menu. Have you already downloaded those ?

Unfortunately those are aero themes, I'd like some NON-aero, to fit with both resolutions.

ok, now the short way to make a bootable USB Disk to install Vista/7
cmd
diskpart
list disk
select disk $ [where $ is the number of the USB Disk listed in the list disk command]
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick label="InstallUSB"
assign
exit
exit
Copy the content of your Installation Disk on USB and boot from it, just simple as that

do this method install the new windwos over the existing windows, or on a new partition in HDD.
As far as I know, no version of windows allows installing of a new windows except from booting.

I just tried it out and it installs it over the existing running windows, doesn´t matter if it was downgraded to xp, or already upgraded to 7, it will install a new and fresh copy of Win 7 in your local drive, regardless of the existing vista recovery partion, which can be used in any time... (I hope to get ride of it once Win 7 final version comes out...)
When the installation is complete, a folder called "old windows" saves all the files from the preivous running operating system, bt since it´s over 10 GB, I suggest you erase it..
Win 7 is fantastic!! I have my shift now running both Internet Explorer 8 and Opera, Office Pro 2007, Skype, Live Messenger, Eset Smart Security 4, Adobe Reader, and more.... as smooth as butter

Please someone could tell me if the differences are big using W7 instead Vista.
So, it's a great solution to move Shift to run on W7, or not ?

I upgraded my hard drive then changed to windows 7 with a clean install. It is amazing how much better my shift runs now that it is on W7. It is really worth it to upgrade.

i upgraded to windows 7 ultimate and changed the drivers compitibility mode to windows vista service pack 1 and they all run smoothly but except the wifi and bluetooth, also the shag control doesn't run
would you please advise?
i am planning to buy the windows 7 upgrade

Help -- Fried my Computer

So.... I have a crappy Sony VAIO laptop and I installed windows 8 release preview on it. It worked fine for about a day then I wanted Ubuntu back so I installed the windows version thinking I would dual boot. Yeah right. Now my computer will not go into anything but the windows recovery thing. If I go to "use a different OS" I have 2 windows 8s both on the same volume (volume 3). It won't automatic repair (says that it couldn't fix my computer and I'm missing SrtTrail.txt) and it will not refresh (says that it can't refresh and no changes were made). I created recovery media from a desktop computer with windows 8 release preview and my computer doesnt even recognize the flash drive in "reset your PC". I need help as I am an android developer and I NEED Ubuntu back. Thank you.

Get the ubuntu disk, pop it in, boot from CD, start new install, format the whole hard drive, wait for Ubuntu to install.

The problem with windows8 is it installs its on bootloader and once you delete windows 8 from that partition the bootloader gets confused and still thinks windows 8 is the primary os.
You want to download easyBCD to delete windows 8 from the boot menu this will allow you to select the os originally installed.

Official ubuntu 12.04 for nexus 7

Hey guys, Today Ubuntu was released for the nexus 7 for both 16GB and 8GB models, it obviously requires unlocked bootloader but it is working! heres a guide i pulled form Ubuntu Wiki.

What you will need:
Nexus 7 Tablet (8GB or 16GB)
Standard MicroUSB Cable (should come with the device)
Ubuntu Nexus 7 Desktop Installer installed on your development system
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or Later
Optional
Micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) - used for attaching keyboard, mouse, etc. Directions on how to get and use one of these are towards the bottom of this page.
Ubuntu Nexus 7 Desktop Installer
A simple one-click installer has been provided, and is available in a PPA.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-nexus7/ubuntu-nexus7-installer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-nexus7-installer
Usage instructions for the installer are provided below.
Unlocking the Nexus 7
The Nexus 7 ships with a locked bootloader. You must unlock it in order to flash different images to the device. Fortunately, this is a trivial process, and you only need to do it once.
Warning: Unlocking the bootloader erases all data and resets the device to factory defaults.
Reboot the Android device into the Android boot loader. To do this, hold the volume down button and press the power button. Continue holding the volume down and power buttons until you see the boot loader UI. The device now displays the boot loader GUI, which looks like this:
Verify fastboot lists the device:
$ sudo fastboot devices
1234567891234567 fastboot
Start the bootloader unlock process:
sudo fastboot oem unlock
You are prompted on screen to unlock the bootloader on the Android device screen. Follow the on-screen directions to continue. Your screen should now look like this:
Complete the process by rebooting:
sudo fastboot reboot-bootloader
Or simply press the power button.
Installing Ubuntu on Nexus 7
Once all setup has been completed, the installation can start. To install, ensure the Nexus 7 is in fastboot mode, plug it into your computer (and make sure NO OTHER DEVICES are plugged in).
Find the installer in the dash (search for 'nexus'):
This will provide a Graphical Interface for installing Ubuntu. This tool will download the latest image automatically, and flash it accordingly. The flashing step should take about 2 minutes. Once the flashing is complete, the device will reboot and finish the installation. This step can take 10-15 minutes.
Returning your Nexus 7 to Stock Android
Warning: Disconnect ALL other mobile devices connected from your computer or they might get erased too. This will erase ALL DATA on your Nexus 7.
In case anything happens while developing, the system image for Nexus 7 can be found here: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/nakasi-jro03d-factory-e102ba72.tgz
After downloading the above tarball, uncompress it with the following:
tar zxvf nakasi-jro03d-factory-e102ba72.tgz
Then, place your machine into fastboot mode and run the resulting script:
cd nakasi-jro03d/
sudo ./flash-all.sh
You may get the following warnings, which you can ignore, the restoration will continue anyway.
archive does not contain 'boot.sig'
archive does not contain 'recovery.sig'
archive does not contain 'system.sig'
Troubleshooting the Install
If you have problems installing the image, please use the following troubleshooting steps:
Detach the USB cable, restart the tablet back into fastboot mode, and re-attach the USB cable.
If problems persist, reboot your host PC.
If you still have issues, try a different USB cable.
If you have a 16G tablet, try using the 8G image.
If you still have issues after doing all this, return the image to stock using the directions above and re-try.
If none of that works, ask a question on Ask Ubuntu using the mobile tag, or ask for help in the #ubuntu-arm channel on freenode. If you believe it's a bug, file a bug against ubuntu-nexus7 in Launchpad.

Is there a way to get it working on Windows?

at the moment, a windows method is not avaliable to my knowledge, but when installing it, it downloads the images and i think you might be able to take the images from the install and run it though windows fastboot like normal, but again i have not tried. also performance is not bad, can be laggy at times but its fine to use. Cheers.

This has already been posted and you can just use fastboot to flash the userdata and boot img

This is a great step forward for linux however, Will this effect my CWM Installation?
I want to know if I can make a full ROM backup the current stock I have modded etc then restore it via CWM to remove ubuntu.

yes, at the moment it wiped my whole device and all, so make sure back everything up externaly first before doing this.

I use an RPM distribution, so I will wait a bit. But it is really interesting!!!!

Hi All,
I'm trying to get Ubuntu installed on my Touchpad... with lots of problems... (anyway, for now most are fixed...)
However, does anyone have a working link for TouchPadBuntuRootfs.tar.gz version: 12.04 LTS edition...??
- all links I found so far are dead!!
Ubuntu 12.10 Final = Screen Corruption, graphics messed up.
Ubuntu 13.04 Final = Does not install, and need to get rid of E17 and restore normal desktop

Took me awhile I had android on my tp so I ran acme uninstaller to do a fresh start because for some reason my WiFi is not working on android.
When I did that it messed up my whole TP then I had to follow directions to factory reset it took me about an hour so now I'm downloading the files to try to run Ubuntu

Thanks for the link, but I am after the specific 12.04 LTS edition of that file...
As I have tried 12.10 but that appears to have limited driver support, and both the graphics display drivers are messed up, plus it wont let me join WiFi... Says I do not have permission, even though I'm an Admin user...
And 13.04 version does not install via the method I mentioned in the other post. It says it's installed, but ends up in a Boot-Loop (only in Ubuntu, all other OS's are fine...).
So if anyone has a link to the 12.04 / LTS Edition that would be most welcomed, as all links to that file seem to be dead at the moment...??
Yeah, restoring a Touchpad can be scary times... My first go at that, and I thought my Tablet had proper died... as even WebOS Doctor didnt want to know it... But thankfully, its alive and well... And now I know how to fix that again easily, its not so scary now... lol

Yeah I got it to run pretty easily via smackme2. From clean install all you have to do is make a folder “sminstall" put the files in it should be
UImage,
the kexec which on Ubuntu 13.04 it comes with it already.
Moboot
You have to have the smackme2 in the folder that you have acmeinstaller in when you loaded android. I have windows so mine would be in
Program files/palm, in
Okay so let me run it down for you.
Download the files you need it should be 4 files total depending if your going to run the 12.04 which should be 4
UIMAGE SMACKME2
KEXEC.TAR(OR WHATEVER IT IS)
MOBOOT
UBUNTU
MAKE “SMINSTALL" FOLDER IN TOUCHPAD COPY KEXEC.TAR, MOBOOT, UBUNTU TO SMINSTALL FOLDER.
THAN YOU WANT TO PUT THE UIMAGE SMACKME2 IN THE PALM, INC FOLDER.
NOW TO GET THE PALM, INC FOLDER YOU'LL HAVE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE NOVACOM DRIVER. WHICH I ASSUME YOU ALREADY DO.
UNMOUNT YOUR TP RESTART IT AND PUT IT INTO RECOVER (WHEN RESTARTED HOLD UP VOLUME)
NEXT YOU WANT TO OPEN UP “FIND" OR “SEARCH" ON YOUR LAPTOP OR COMPUTER AND OPEN EITHER CMD OR COMMAND PROMPT.
NEXT AS FOLLOWS FOR COMMAND PROMPT.
CD /PROGRAM FILES/PALM, INC
novacom boot mem:// < uImage.SmackMe2
You can copy and paste that last one.
After that it should show the two penguins and start extracting.
It'll reboot the boot into kexec then toggle with volume button to Ubuntu and to select it press/hold the power button at the top.
I'm going to try to find Ubuntu 12.04 for you but its 1am here in California and I'm about to go to bed.

Kindle Fire HD Bircked Help

Ok I bricked my Kindle Fire HD 7.... Ive heard you needed to order a fastboot cable to fix it and I did.. Now I just need help to fix it as im not the best when it comes to this stuff. Again I have the fastboot cable and the tablet goes into fastboot mode but I dont know what to do... Could someone give me instructions on how to fix it?

Ok well on my tablet it shows the Fastboot logo... On the KFHD SRT Thing I selected the first option (Restore Factory Rooted With SuperSU)
And all it shows is < waiting for device >
Is there something else I need to do before this???

Make sure you are logged in as admin on your computer. Open a command prompt and type "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" without the quotations. Wait 10 seconds and tell me what the screen says.

Make sure your drivers are installed properly. Windows 8/7 64bit need to be put in test mode so your drivers will install right. Windows is not going to let you do this until you disable device driver signature enforcement.
Disable device driver signature enforcement in Windows 7 read on. Windows 8 has different steps.
Both must be done from the administrator profile to work right
Both of these are for Windows 7 X64 users.
Windows 7 X32 and earlier version users do not have this issue
A.*
1. Reboot and on start up press F8 a couple times.
2. Scroll down to "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement."*
Note: This must be done on every bootup you want to install something not MS signed.*
B. For a more permanent solution.*
1. First go and uninstall the driver (delete driver) you want to replace and then restart your computer.*
2. Now go to the start menu and type cmd.
3. Right click on "cmd" and open a command prompt with elevated privileges (run as administrator.)
4. Now type these in the command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one.
bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON
bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
4. Now install the driver you want.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Profit.
Note: If you do this right, you will see "Test Mode Windows 7 Build 7601" (or something comparable) in the lower right corner of your screen. This means that drivers not signed by MS can be installed without getting the Windows has installed the best driver already bit.*
If you opt to take your computer out of test mode, the drivers will more than likely be replaced by MS drivers next time. To exit test mode follow steps 1,2 and 3 in part B of my writeup and type these commands in the command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one.
bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions ENABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS*
bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING OFF
Now restart computer.

Please wait for at least 20 minutes. the process takes a long time
